While the notch has become an unfortunate trend in the smartphone market, Vivo and Oppo have shown the world how a proper all-screen design should be done — by stuffing the front cameras into a motorized pop-up module. About two months later, Honor caught up by showing off a vague Magic 2 teaser, in which you could make out what appeared to be a pop-up camera as well. But thanks to the help of six lucky Chinese celebrities, today we finally see the phone in action ahead of its October 31st launch, and as it turns out, we’re actually looking at a different all-screen implementation here.
First of all, we can now confirm that the Honor Magic 2 is indeed a slider phone, as shown in the videos shared by the presumably well-paid celebrities. To reveal the front cameras at the top (I see at least two there), simply slide the screen downwards with your thumb; and vice versa. According to singer Jiacheng Wu, the sliding mechanism felt “very good” (but of course he would say that) — so good that fellow celebrity Enqi Zhong sang along to a beat consisting of the slider’s clicking noises (ugh). Honor’s very own TikTok channel even created a beat by clicking the phone and knocking it on the table. Enjoy.
And then there’s the back of the phone which wasn’t shown before. As seen in Zhong’s video and also Zanilia Zhao’s photo above, this “debut premium edition” Magic 2 features a red-to-purple gradient mirror finish, along with a triple camera laid out similarly to the one on Huawei’s P20 Pro. But just in case you can’t tell the two phones apart without flipping them over, Honor moved the LED flash from the bottom to the top.
Another photo from Zhao also highlights Honor’s very own voice assistant, Yoyo, though it’s most likely limited to Chinese-speaking users. Apart from that, there’s no word on the device’s other features nor specs, but given that the Magic series is meant to show off Honor’s latest smartphone tricks, it’s reasonable to expect flagship specs here.

Honor’s upcoming slider phone won’t be the last of its kind. Xiaomi’s Mix 3 — due to be launched in Beijing this Thursday — also appears to have the same notch-free sliding screen design. In fact, it was the Magic 2’s IFA teaser that prompted Xiaomi president Lin Bin to immediately unveil his similar-looking device, which is a very unusual move for this company. The exec even wrote “sorry, they look alike.” Hey, at least Xiaomi hasn’t been making silly videos with its new phone (yet).

With pricing and sales activity varying greatly between regions in March, the market overall has become more complex of late with a mixed picture emerging that is very different to previous environments, and indeed far harder to predict in terms of changes in the short and medium term.
The latest RICS report indicates that there is still a lack of sellers, a trend that was first reported last year and has continued since.
In many areas outside of London and its commuter belt, there just isn’t enough property available for buyers to choose from, therefore leading to a corresponding drop in sales numbers, with the overall turnover of homes remaining relatively steady.
In London and the South East, however, where buyer activity remains significantly lower than normal, the report suggests that 47 per cent of Surveyors have seen price falls as a result, with the difficult market reflected by 55 per cent of Surveyors also indicating that they have noted a rise in the number of properties in and around the Capital being withdrawn from sale.
Other areas of the UK which experienced a slip in property values in March were the North East and, surprisingly, East Anglia which previously had seen significant rises, perhaps indicating that this particular region has ‘topped out’ in terms of pricing levels that local buyers can withstand.
Conversely Wales, Northern Ireland and the East Midlands all saw activity and prices rises last month due to strong levels of buyer demand.
Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist commented on the report, “The latest RICS results provide little encouragement that the drop in housing market activity is likely to be reversed anytime soon.
“Apart from the implications this has for the market itself, it also has the potential to impact the wider economy contributing to a softer trend in household spending.
“This could make Bank of England deliberations around a May hike in interest rates, which is pretty much odds-on at the moment, a little more finely balanced than would otherwise be the case.”
Simon continued: “The downshift in sales for the time being continues to be more visible in London and the South East with many other parts of the country continuing to show rather greater resilience.
“Feedback on expectations regarding transactions suggest this divergence will persist over the coming months.”
Another interesting observation from the report was that a quarter of Surveyors felt that the Government’s flagship Help To Buy scheme is actually having a negative impact on the market, with a logjam caused due to incentives offered by new homes builders and developers.
As Brian Murphy, Head of Lending for Mortgage Advice Bureau explained: “First Time Buyers are normally seen as the lifeblood of the market, underpinning buyers and sellers further up the chain.
“It therefore stands to reason that if these buyers are instead purchasing new build, the organic demand isn’t there for existing stock, therefore potentially contributing towards the market stagnating at second stepper level, and further up the price brackets.”
Looking ahead, the report suggests that the market will remain broadly positive across the UK overall, and that the number of properties sold is likely to pick up this time next year.
As Brian concluded: “It’s interesting to note that 17 per cent of respondents believe that we’ll see a pick up in sales activity in twelve months’ time, which will be after our scheduled departure date from Europe, and appears to reflect sentiment that a lot of would-be movers are holding on until after Brexit before making any major decisions.”
Whether or not at that point we’ll see demand, activity and values return to previous levels in the currently stalling London and South East markets, however, remains to be seen.

Generally speaking, it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slowly. But after spending a whole day driving Lamborghinis on a frozen lake about two hours northeast of Montreal, Quebec, we’ve had to rethink that. Indeed, driving a Lamborghini Huracán or an Aventador on a frozen lake in Canada or anywhere, honestly, will have you rethinking a lot of things—your financial goals, your aversion to cold, your life choices, the basic tenets of physics—but one thing seems truer than ever as you watch $ 4.5 million worth of angry-looking carbon-fiber and aluminum beasts charging around a curvy path carved into the snow, their bright Skittles-color paints contrasting strikingly against the snowy white backdrop: Rich folks really do have more fun.
–
We were there to participate in Lamborghini’s Winter Accademia, a two-day ice driving program which the company has hosted in certain global markets annually since 2012 that highlights the winter-friendliness of Lamborghini’s all-wheel-drive supercars—an understandably incredulous notion to the uninitiated. And here you thought the upcoming Urus was going to be the “winter Lamborghini.”
–
–
Heretofore held in Aspen, Colorado, the North American Winter Accademia was moved this year to this remote, privately owned Canadian property located about 75 miles from Porsche’s Camp4 Canada winter driving school on which we reported last year. Conveniently, the property features a luxurious timber-construction boutique hotel and a large lake called Lake Sacacomie that we were told while driving out on it (in an Audi Q7 with four cornfed men aboard) was covered by a three-foot-thick layer of solid ice—sufficient to hold us and the Lamborghinis and, apparently, the Q7.
–
The Winter Accademia complements the Track Accademia weekend programs that Lamborghini holds at actual racetracks during summer months, when a fishing boat might be bobbing in the waves in the exact place where I enjoyed a cup or two of hot cocoa on a cushy leather couch inside a tent as large as two Winnebagos. This year, Lamborghini brought its 572-hp Huracán coupe, the 730-hp Aventador S coupe, and the new 639-hp Huracán Performante that recently rocketed us from zero to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and cornered at 1.11 g’s during its first C/D road test. But that was on dry pavement.
–
–
The lake might as well have been solid rock—very slippery but very solid rock—on which a well-groomed two-plus-mile pathway of varying width was plowed through the two-to-three-foot layer of snow that had accumulated on it since it froze over. The surface got slightly bumpy in places, but it was still ice—as hard, as slick, and as tricky to traverse as any patch of ice you’ve ever stumbled across before, only this patch was the size of a lake.
–
Climbing in and out of these frozen-lake-hugging supercars is tricky when there’s nothing but ice outside the car; we doubt Nancy Kerrigan herself could do so gracefully. How were we going to keep supercars with up to 730 horsepower going the right direction on a surface we could hardly walk across? Well, we couldn’t have if not for two things: special studded tires and expert guidance from Lamborghini’s professional Squadra Corse instructors, who rode shotgun at all times during our multiple 15-minute sessions.
–
–
Driving out to the first exercise, intended to teach participants to hold aggressive drift angles all the way around the aptly named Power Circle 360, we had no trouble driving the Huracán coupe normally. Once on the circle, we could initiate a drift by stabbing the brakes to transfer the weight forward while simultaneously dialing in opposite lock as the rear end quite quickly swung around. Within a second or two, we were back on the gas and straightening the wheel once again, maintaining the drift with all four wheels clawing in the same direction yet continuing to rotate around the circle. It took a few tries, but by the end even your Los Angeles-based author, who had never driven sideways in something so powerful and expensive before—at least not intentionally—felt he could have drifted around that circle all day long.
–
Then came a tail-wagging slalom course and sweeping pendulum-turn exercises in something even more powerful and expensive—and, as it turns out, even more fun while sideways—the $ 425K Aventador S. The slalom was relatively easy and got us acclimated to the Aventador’s larger-than-life character before we attempted to learn the pendulum turn, a.k.a. the Scandinavian Flick, in this much wider, much more powerful, much heavier car. What could possibly go wrong? Well, it took a bit longer to master, and fortunately, the course designers provided a much wider berth and more accommodating path for the flagship Lambo. But eventually we were flicking the big bull with relative ease, and it was time to move into the much lighter, quicker-reacting, track-focused $ 279K Huracán Performante for a few rather clumsy laps of the main track, which put to the test pretty much everything we’d done theretofore. We made it through a few laps without stuffing it into a snowbank, but there were a few close grazes. More practice required.
–
–
After gourmet vittles off the ice at a nearby clubhouse, we were back in the Huracán coupes, learning to swing the tail right, then left, then right again on an hourglass-shaped figure-eight course. Nailed it.
–
For anyone wondering what happens in the event that a driver loses control and plows into a snowbank, apparently Lamborghini has thought of this, too, so the answer is not much. As it turns out, snowbanks are softer than those made of dirt and rock. We witnessed a few vehicles stuff a couple of wheels or the entire nose into the snow, sometimes requiring a tow vehicle—a large Ram pickup—to chug out to the marooned car and give it a tug. But no cars seemed any the worse for it, and the only damage was to the drivers’ egos.
–
As we became more comfortable with the maneuvers, we were better able to discern how the icy surface amplifies certain innate handling attributes of the cars—particularly the quickness and the hypercommunicative nature of the steering, the effects of weight transfer from rear to front and side to side, and the rear-wheel bias of the all-wheel-drive systems available on all Lamborghinis. I imagine that exploring these limits would be possible in dry weather on asphalt, although the speeds—and the consequences for getting it wrong—would be much, much higher. This was a great place to hone one’s inner gyroscope, and these were great cars to do it in.
–
–
Our car-control skills had developed by the time we were back on the track in the Performantes again. We executed powerslides that would make Bo and Luke Duke proud and Scandinavian Flicks that set us charging out of corners like a hero. Our speed topped 70 mph on some of the straighter sections, and if 70 mph doesn’t sound fast to you, you haven’t driven a Lamborghini on ice.

For those who want to try it, Accademia courses are classifed as intermediate level within Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse driving and racing programs, above the beginner program, called Esperienza, that is open to prospective and first-time customers but below the Pilota program, which targets prospective racers. As such, both the Winter and Track Accademia programs are offered only to current Lamborghini owners who have already completed an Esperienza event and are willing to shell out $ 9500 for the two-day program. That sum doesn’t include airfare but, this year, included a morning of dog sledding on the departure day. Spouses were welcome but couldn’t drive unless they were also registered as participants. With only a couple dozen total attendees each year, the Winter Accademia is both exclusive and popular enough to have a waiting list. And after completing it ourselves, we can understand why.

Though no longer a part of the Italdesign company, the Giugiaro family of designers are still creating cars at their new studio GFG Style. The latest car from the group is called the Sibylla, and it was designed for a Chinese energy company called Envision that builds wind turbines and creates energy management systems. Though the combination is unusual, the car is awesome.
We should explain the name before going much further, though. According to GFG, the name comes from a mythical Latin character that could provide answers and predict the future. This is evident in the car, because it features Envision’s operating system for managing electricity. The idea is that this car would be able to act as a battery either storing or providing electricity to nearby buildings as needed. The name was also chosen because Giorgetto Giugiaro‘s mother, Maria Sibilla, shared the name.
It may not be a name that rolls off the tongue, but that hardly matters because the car is gorgeous. It has a space-age round canopy unhindered by pillars, accentuated by a low, wedge-like nose. Because of the large one-piece windshield, GFG had to devise an unusual way to climb in. The whole glass dome slides forward when the front doors are opened. Based on GFG’s description, it seems that the occupants can keep the windshield in a slightly forward position, too, if a targa-style experience is desired. The rear doors have a flashy opening system, as well, this time in the form of a gull-wing design. Inside, there are just four seats. The front passengers have access to an expansive infotainment display filling the arched dashboard. The driver gets an airplane-style steering wheel with touch pads. The rear passengers have fully reclining seats and individual infotainment systems.
Only one part of the car is a bit predictable, and it’s the powertrain. It uses two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back for all-wheel-drive. Exact specs weren’t revealed, but in describing the electrical networking capability, there is reference to a hypothetical 75kWh battery. If it used such a battery, it would probably have a similar range to the entry-level Tesla Model S 75D, which can go about 260 miles on a charge.
The Sibyla will be on display at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. We don’t expect it to become a production car, but we wouldn’t mind if it did.

Near the Arctic Circle, Sweden — A snarl rips in the distance; it’s morning and the sound must mean the engineers have arrived. Pulling back the hotel room’s blackout curtain—a necessity for summer months here when the sun, like a toddler, protests ever going to bed—reveals a soft Arctic light washing over desolate stretches of frozen earth and deep forest. But there’s no sign of the car we’re here to meet, the long-awaited next generation of Aston Martin’s best-selling sports car, the 2019 Vantage. We’ve been promised a ride after breakfast and a technical briefing. READ MORE ››

China is reversing course and loosening some financial restrictions after the yuan’s appreciation in 2017.
The People’s Bank of China will remove an October 2015 measure that made it more expensive for onshore banks to use currency forwards, as well as a January 2016 reserve requirement on foreign banks’ yuan deposits, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Lingling Wei.
The yuan weakened against the US dollar by about 0.6% on Monday after the news crossed the wires.
Both measures were originally introduced to soften depreciation pressures on the yuan. They followed the PBoC’s August 2015 devaluation of the yuan, which spooked investors. At the time, there were concerns that the currency might continue to dip further.
This year, however, the onshore yuan has appreciated by over 6% against the dollar as the US currency has continued on its downward trajectory. The dollar index has fallen by about 11% against a basket of currencies since US President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
But in recent weeks, the yuan has appreciated by more than the dollar’s corresponding weakening, Tao Wang, economist at UBS, pointed out in a note to clients last week.
Some analysts have suggested that the central bank’s decision to remove the earlier measures reflects worries that the strengthening yuan could hurt exports. (If the yuan strengthens against another currency, then China’s goods and services become more expensive for people using the other currency, and they might end up buying less of those Chinese goods and services.)
And in fact, Pan Haisong, who runs Shanghai Taijing International Freight Co., an international shipping company, told the WSJ that some of his exporter clients have reduced orders because of the stronger yuan.
Capital Economics
But not everyone is convinced that a stronger yuan is the central bank’s biggest concern. Mark Williams, chief Asia economist at Capital Economics, argued that the yuan’s recent gains against the dollar have been mostly offset by losses against other currencies, and that this is why policymakers made their move.
He illustrated that argument via a chart, which shows that the yuan has appreciated against a broad trade-weighted basket of currencies by far less than it has appreciated against the US dollar.
He also argued that the bank isn’t necessarily aiming for a weaker yuan, but for more uncertainty.
“We don’t believe that officials at the People’s Bank are so acutely sensitive to the level of the exchange rate that they are now worried about renminbi strength — it has barely moved in trade-weighted terms,” said he said in a note to clients.
“But now that depreciation pressure has abated, policymakers will want to introduce more uncertainty about the outlook to prevent the re-emergence of a view that the currency will only move one way.”

Bank stocks are sliding as heavy buying at the long end of the Treasury curve has the flattened the 2-10-year spread to 78.5 basis points, near its flattest level since the end of 2007.
The benchmark 10-year yield is down 9.6 bps to 2.07% and at its lowest levels since the week following President Donald Trump’s election victory. The 5-year yield is lower by 5 bps at 1.28%
A flatter yield curve hurts bank profitability, allowing them to make less on the spread between what they borrow in the short-term and what they lend over the long-term.
Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase are among the biggest laggards in the Dow Jones industrial average, trading down 3.2% and 2.5%, respectively.
But the damage isn’t limited to just those names. The financial sector as a whole is feeling the heat. Here’s a look at the scoreboard as of 1 p.m. ET:
