First Winter Is A Short Dread-Inducing Slice Of First-Person Horror https://briefnews.eu/first-winter-is-a-short-dread-inducing-slice-of-first-person-horror/ https://briefnews.eu/first-winter-is-a-short-dread-inducing-slice-of-first-person-horror/#respond Wed, 09 May 2018 09:10:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/first-winter-is-a-short-dread-inducing-slice-of-first-person-horror/ ss_6ce6240fbd06d2c22a870049d2a948fc1cdcbd84.jpg

Dan Sanderson’s Pacific was a very short, but quite effective piece of uneasy tension, with its shifting halls and minimalist storytelling. First Winter is a remake of that project, now with more detailed but no less unnerving environments and a more intricate narrative.

The set-up for First Winter is already one steeped in paranoia and surreality, revolving around a mysterious Soviet submarine and a threat of nuclear catastrophe. But as you explore the dim, damp, rust-coated halls, sinister happenings begin to seep into the environments, as reality seems to unhinge in terrifying ways. The grimy pixelated aesthetic only adds to the horror, giving First Winter‘s world an indistinct not-quite-right atmosphere. First Winter won’t last you that long, less than an hour – in fact, the developer recommends playing it in a single sitting – but there are multiple endings to experience.

You can buy First Winter for $ 3.99 on Steam, Itch.io, and Gamejolt.

Slice And Slash To Solve Combat Puzzles In Ori Hunter https://briefnews.eu/slice-and-slash-to-solve-combat-puzzles-in-ori-hunter/ https://briefnews.eu/slice-and-slash-to-solve-combat-puzzles-in-ori-hunter/#respond Wed, 02 May 2018 05:24:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/slice-and-slash-to-solve-combat-puzzles-in-ori-hunter/ ori.png

Crafted for Ludum 41, Ori Hunter is a small but clever puzzler, where you must manage limited slices to annihilate rooms of demons as a futuristic ninja.

As the high-tech sword-wielder, you must clear each screen in five slashes, with the last blade-tipped dash leaving you at the level’s exit elevator. These challenges start out simply, letting you bisect several enemies in a single well-placed slash, but then Ori Hunter begins introducing new enemy types: the alert-raising Agent, the armored Tank, and the teleporting Boss.

Those enemies force you to consider the timing of your slice sequence and pushes you to figure out how to make each slash count. With some enemies requiring multiple slashes, or not able to be approached from a certain direction, you’ll need to think moves ahead, place each slash target precisely, and consider where your attack will place you on the screen.

Ori Hunter is short, but this puzzler makes the most of its sci-fi pixel art style and simple central mechanic. You can play the game on your browser through Itch,io and find the game’s Ludum Dare page here.

Miami Slice: Ford Starts Self-Driving Pizza Delivery, and More, in South Florida https://briefnews.eu/miami-slice-ford-starts-self-driving-pizza-delivery-and-more-in-south-florida/ https://briefnews.eu/miami-slice-ford-starts-self-driving-pizza-delivery-and-more-in-south-florida/#respond Wed, 28 Feb 2018 03:33:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/miami-slice-ford-starts-self-driving-pizza-delivery-and-more-in-south-florida/ Ford Autonomous Vehicle Testing in Miami

–

Throughout its years-long push to develop autonomous vehicles, Ford has tested its self-driving technology along city streets in Pittsburgh, during blinding snowstorms in Michigan, and through blistering temperatures in Arizona. When it comes to testing the business models that Ford thinks self-driving cars will support, rather than the underlying technology itself, company executives knew they needed a new venue. Ford has chosen Miami to serve as that proving ground, company officials said Tuesday.

–

Earlier this month, Ford started testing self-driving delivery services in the city, an extension of its ongoing partnership with Domino’s Pizza. Further tests will soon begin with Postmates, a logistics and delivery company. Far from one-off ventures, these Miami tests signal Ford’s intent to commit to the city over the long term. The testing will serve as a prelude to the launch of self-driving services, which the company projects will come to market in 2021, starting with Miami as the first U.S. city for commercial operations. Already Ford has started building a maintenance depot in the Wynwood section of Miami that will serve as a dispatch center and hub of operations.

–

Ford isn’t saying how many self-driving vehicles it will run in the city, but Sherif Marakby, the company’s vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification, said he expects “month over month” growth in the fleet. For starters, there will be two separate fleets operating. One, run by Argo AI, a Pittsburgh startup in which Ford has invested $ 1 billion, will map Miami’s roads; the other, run by Ford, will make deliveries for the company’s user-experience testing.

–

Ford Pilots Self-Driving Vehicle Services in Miami

–

For now, Ford is focused on making commercial deliveries with self-driving vehicles. But ride-sharing services underpinned by autonomous vehicles appear to be in the company’s plans.

–

“We’re starting with commercial deliveries because it’s a natural progression for our Domino’s and Postmates partnerships, and we’ll be announcing more in the upcoming months,” Marakby said. “But we announced a partnership last year with Lyft. So you’ll hear more from us. Our strategy is covering both—moving people and goods.”

–

Searching for a home in the Sun Belt seems like a no-brainer—the Florida climate will help avoid the weather problems that still plague the sensors on which autonomous systems rely. But the enthusiasm of city officials, the variety of businesses that could utilize delivery services around the clock, and the geographic layout of the city and its suburbs all helped put Miami and surrounding Dade County at the top of Ford’s list.

–

Ford started self-driving pizza deliveries with Domino’s Pizza last fall in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in an ongoing pilot project that has helped both companies learn how customers interact with autonomous vehicles. Miami will help bolster those understandings, as the companies determine how those interactions might change when customers live in high-rise apartments in congested urban environments.

–

–

On the customer-facing end, they’ll study a range of issues, such as the willingness of customers to come meet a vehicle from those apartments, how customers use dual-language voice-recognition systems, and teaching vehicles to stop in the best place for dropping off goods in urban streets without illegally double parking. On the business side, Ford wants to figure out how to ensure that its fleet is used as often as possible rather than only at busy travel times.

–

“The fact that there’s a diverse set of businesses is a plus, because one of the keys for utilization is not only running at peak hours—we don’t like that,” Marakby said. “We want to run across most of the day, meaning we do want to have the availability for cars to move goods and people at times when it’s not peak.”

–

Miami is the fifth most congested city in the United States, according to the annual Global Traffic Scorecard compiled by Inrix, a specialist in real-time traffic analytics. Commuters in Dade County spend an average of 64 hours stuck in traffic every year, so Ford’s desire to conduct around-the-clock operations is simpatico with the city’s goal of reducing peak-travel-time congestion.

–

Ford Autonomous Vehicle Testing in Miami

–

As Ford studies how businesses use these services and the broader traffic environment, there’s still one key component missing from its plans to launch commercial services by 2021: it needs a car. Ford has previously stated that it is developing an all-new self-driving hybrid vehicle that will be tailored for deliveries and the ride-hailing environment. It has not revealed any timetable for showcasing this vehicle, but with commercial operations only three years away, Ford says its development is well underway.

–

–

Ford will need to move quickly to incorporate any findings from its Miami pilot projects into the initial user-experience designs. Marakby acknowledged that the window is shrinking but said there is still time. “It depends on what we’re trying to incorporate,” he said. “We’re not just looking at the vehicle. We’re well underway on the development of that vehicle, but a lot of things we’re expecting to learn about, like the software interface and how people access their delivery with a screen or authenticate themselves—it’s not too late for some things. But it might be for others.”

Coco denies Wright siblings slice of history https://briefnews.eu/coco-denies-wright-siblings-slice-of-history/ https://briefnews.eu/coco-denies-wright-siblings-slice-of-history/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 00:08:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coco-denies-wright-siblings-slice-of-history/ HAWAIIAN Coco Ho has claimed the honour of being the first person to beat world champion Tyler Wright in 2018 while thwarting a piece of Australian surfing history.

Wright and brother Mikey were on track to became the first brother and sister in history to win matching titles at Surfest at Newcastle before Ho decided to spoil the party.

IRON COMEBACK: From surgery to surf

MOTIVATION:What has Steph Gilmore fired up?

While Mikey did his bit by defeating Hawaiian Baron Manila 18.30 to 16.17 in the men’s decider, his sister fell just short in a closely fought women’s finale.

Ho, who competes on the world tour alongside the Australian, just edged Wright 11.50 to 11.34 to win the women’s crown.

She is the first woman to take a heat off Wright since the Australian won her second world title in Maui in December.

“She almost got it on that last wave. It was close,” said Mikey, who now heads south to compete at the Sydney Pro at Manly from Monday.

“It would have been pretty nice to do.”

Despite the loss, Wright said she was happy with her only competition outing before the 2018 world tour opener on the Gold Coast in March.

“It’s been a pretty successful competition,” Wright said.

‘Publicly hang & slice him to death’: S. Korean MPs want North’s delegate killed https://briefnews.eu/publicly-hang-slice-him-to-death-s-korean-mps-want-norths-delegate-killed/ https://briefnews.eu/publicly-hang-slice-him-to-death-s-korean-mps-want-norths-delegate-killed/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2018 17:21:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/publicly-hang-slice-him-to-death-s-korean-mps-want-norths-delegate-killed/

More than 70 South Korean lawmakers are calling for the leader of the North’s Olympic delegation to be publicly hanged and “sliced to death.” The demands came at a protest outside the presidential Blue House in Seoul Friday.

North Korean General Kim Yong Chol will lead an eight-member delegation that will attend the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Olympics Sunday to kick off a three-day visit. The former spymaster is widely believed to have coordinated a series of attacks against the South, including the torpedo attack which sank the Republic of Korea Navy Pohang-class corvette, killing 46 crew. Pyongyang has repeatedly denied responsibility for the incident.

“Kim Yong Chol is a diabolical war criminal who attacked the South… He deserves death by hanging in the street,” the party’s parliamentary floor leader Kim Sung-tae said in a statement, as cited by AFP. “Even if the heavens split in two, we cannot allow such a heinous criminal – who must be sliced to death – to be invited to the Olympics closing ceremony.”

Kim Yong Chol, the former head of the North’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, has also been accused of involvement in the shelling of Yeonpyeong island in the Republic of Korea in 2010, which killed four people. Unification Ministry spokesman Baek said the sinking of the Cheonan was “certainly the North’s work” but added that “there are limits to pinpointing those who were directly responsible.” Yong-chol, 72, was the chief military negotiator during previous inter-Korean talks, between 2006 and 2008.

However, despite the efforts to scupper the peace talks, the visit will likely go ahead for the greater good, given the amount of progress towards detente between the two nations that has been made in recent months. Unification ministry spokesman Baek Tae-hyun emphasized the “chances for improving inter-Korean ties” adding that “a peace settlement might be improved.”

“We expect the high-level delegation’s participation in the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to help advance the process of settling peace on the Korean Peninsula including the improvement of inter-Korean relations and denuclearization,” the Unification Ministry, a South Korean government agency, said in a statement as cited by The New York Times. “Against this backdrop, from this standpoint, we will accept the visit of North Korea’s high-level delegation to the South.”

North Korea has toned down its abrasive rhetoric ahead of and during the Olympic games while engaging in a charm offensive over which the mainstream media has fawned in recent weeks. Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, sat mere feet away from US Vice President Mike Pence at the games but the two didn’t exchange a single word despite prior reports that the US was willing to talk. Kim Yo-jong also invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to a summit meeting in the North on behalf of her brother Kim Jong-Un.

How JUST one slice of wholemeal toast a day could control diabetes symptoms https://briefnews.eu/how-just-one-slice-of-wholemeal-toast-a-day-could-control-diabetes-symptoms-2/ https://briefnews.eu/how-just-one-slice-of-wholemeal-toast-a-day-could-control-diabetes-symptoms-2/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 10:11:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-just-one-slice-of-wholemeal-toast-a-day-could-control-diabetes-symptoms-2/

Diabetes patients can’t process carbohydrates effectively, a dietician has said.

Carbs are broken down into small units of glucose when digested, which raises blood sugar.

The pancreas should produce insulin to help the blood sugar enter cells, providing the body with energy.

But, in diabetics, the pancreas fails to produce the correct amount of insulin, which can cause severe harm.

“Many studies support low-carb diets for the treatment of diabetes,” said Registered Dietitian, and Certified Diabetes Educator, Franziska Spritzler.

“In fact, prior to the discovery of insulin in 1921, very-low-carb diets were considered standard treatment for people with diabetes.

“What’s more, low-carb diets seem to work well in the long term, as long as patients adhere to the diet.

“The optimal amount of carbs may also vary by individual, since everyone has a unique response to carbs. To figure out your ideal amount, you may want to measure your blood glucose with a meter before a meal, and again one to two hours after eating,” Spritzler wrote on medical website Healthline.

Eating just 20 grams of carbs a day could provide “dramatic improvements in blood sugar levels”, some studies have claimed.

Two slices of wholewheat bread equates roughly to 200 calories, 44 g carbs, 0 g fat, 6 g protein.

Other research revealed that 70 to 90 grams of total carbohydrates daily would reduce diabetes symptoms.

It’s important to remember that the less carbs eaten, the less blood sugar will rise, Spritzler urged.

A healthy, low-carb diet should include nutrient-dense, high-fibre source of carbohydrates. That includes vegetables, berries, nuts and seeds.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, where the body mistakenly attacks the pancreatic cells responsible for making insulin.

In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas loses its ability to produce insulin, said Spritzler.

Symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, passing more urine than normal, and feeling very tired.

Unexplained weight loss, episodes of thrush and blurred vision could all be signs of diabetes.

Slice Of Life Tasks Players With Surviving As A Fawn Separated From Family https://briefnews.eu/slice-of-life-tasks-players-with-surviving-as-a-fawn-separated-from-family/ https://briefnews.eu/slice-of-life-tasks-players-with-surviving-as-a-fawn-separated-from-family/#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 03:18:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/slice-of-life-tasks-players-with-surviving-as-a-fawn-separated-from-family/ sliceOfLife_header.jpg

There’s a lot to consider if you’re ever alone in the woods with no idea where you are (and dealing with active volcanoes). Which direction do you go in? What do you eat? Where can you sleep? Is it safe? These questions are all answered from the viewpoint of a fawn who has to survive alone in the woods while searching for its family in Slice of Life.

Survival-adventure style game Slice of Life puts players in control of a fawn that becomes separated from its parents. Your goal is to survive alone and learn how to cope with the dangers of the forest. As a fawn with very limited defenses, you’ll be pressed to find safe spots for rest while you’re trying to reunite with your family. Dealing with hunger and thirst is also a priority since you’ll have to find sources of food and water to keep yourself in healthy shape!

Slice of Life
presents these challenges in a beautifully rendered stage for players to enjoy. The environments are smoothly crafted, and help perpetuate a feeling of innocence in the fawn (when players aren’t dealing with rivers of magma). While the forest may be full of dangers, players will still be able to appreciate its beauty while playing.
