Glen Schofield, cocreator of several Call of Duty games, said he was leaving Sledgehammer Games, which he started in 2009 with Michael Condrey.Read More
]]>
Sledgehammer Games have announced something that is likely going to see player progression slowdown on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The studio’s chief operating officer, Michael condrey, just announced something rather unusual on Reddit.
According to the development team, Double XP has been active in-game since launch.
The new Call of Duty WW2 update was revealed after the studio announced its first bonus XP weekend.
However, it was noticed that leveling wasn’t really that different and it became clear something wasn’t right.
Soon after, Condrey released this statement on Reddit: “We launched with 2XP active, unintentionally.
“Everyone was getting 2XP since 11/3 and up until we made the playlist change late Thursday night, which effectively launched 3XP.
“Come Monday, when we turn off the XP bonus, it will effectively revert to what we should have had at launch (aka 1XP).
“So early players, you got a huge head start. PS. Positive intent is the spirit of life.”
So it’s great news if you’ve been grinding multiplayer from the start and not so good news if you’ve only just picked up the game.
As mentioned above, every player will see a drastic drop in leveling when the current bonus XP event ends on Monday.
The feedback from players has been swift, with many raising concerns on the difficulty of playing through a lower level of XP allowance.
“The last 3 or 4 levels have been taking a long time even with this so called “3xp”,” one fan wrote.
“If the XP rate is 1/3 of this then there’s no way I’ll keep trying to grind it out. It’d feel like spinning wheels in the mud.”
Sledgehammer recently launched a new update for PS4 and Xbox One and are hoping to launch the PC version in the next 48hrs.
There’s also new testing being done with bringing back dedicated server through the weekend, although the game will remain on P2P while this continues.
The PS4, Xbox One and PC shooter has been getting positive reviews from critics, and Call of Duty WW2 is going down a treat with fans also.
In the first three days since release Call of Duty WW2 has sold TWICE as many units as last year’s entry, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.
Activision revealed that Call of Duty WW2 sold around £379 million in its first three days on sale across the globe.
Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, said: “We challenged our players to get their squads back together and they answered the call, with the highest number of players we’ve ever seen on current gen consoles and PC.
“Call of Duty: WWII returns the franchise to its roots and the results are incredible, selling twice as many units in its opening weekend as last year, and setting the day one record for full-game downloads on PlayStation 4.
“Our $ 500 million opening weekend was not only bigger than Thor: Ragnarok’s, it was bigger than the opening weekends of both Thor and Wonder Woman combined.
“And we’re committed to supporting the community with continuous improvements and new content.”
Call of Duty WW2 has been out for over a week now, and sees Sledgehammer Games return to the series’ roots with a World War 2 setting.

The impressive sales figures for Call of Duty’s return to a WW2 setting could mean Activision decides to explore this era and real-world environment more.
In recent years Call of Duty has moved away from the grounded, real-life settings it made it’s name with to go for a futuristic, sci-fi feel instead.
The huge success of Call of Duty WW2 may mean Activision will stick to World War 2 settings for future COD games.
Or, alternatively, they could revisit other eras – like the original Black Ops which was set during the Cold War.
The news comes as Call of Duty WW2 fans were hit by another server outage.
Call of Duty WW2 players reported the game down again after the recent update 1.05 was rolled out.
Down Detector received reports from hundreds of fans that Call of Duty WW2 was offline in the early hours of today.
Sledgehammer Games have acknowledged the server issues and said they are working to restore dedicated server support.
In their most recent tweet, they posted: “STATUS UPDATE: We’re currently working to restore dedicated servers, and testing to avoid further interruptions.
“We’ll update as soon as possible.”
It comes after Call of Duty WW2 on its first weekend after release was down for thousands of players who tried to play it online.
The new update 1.05 is expected to fix a number of issues Call of Duty WW2 fans have experienced since launch.
A statement from Sledgehammer Games posted to Reddit with the patch notes read: “We’ve heard the community loud and clear over social channels, and we’re working around the clock to ensure a better experience for all players,” a message from the Sledgehammer reads on Reddit.
“We’ve been tracking issues as they arise on our end and have pushed an update to address some of your top concerns.”
A lot of these new changes are COD multiplayer fixes, which should help to bring more stability to the overall experience.
Sledgehammer have also provided a few buffs and nerfs to their weapons collections, which can be found below:
BUFFs –
Walther Toggle Action Shotgun – Damage increased at extremely close range
Bren LMG – Increased damage per shot
LMG Bipod – Sped up ADS time when in bipod stance
NERFs –
BAR Rifle – decreased fire rate and widened hip fire spread
STG44 Rifle – widened hip fire spread
FG42 Rifle – increased recoil and widened hip fire spread
Machine Pistol – decreased damage ranges
SNIPER CLASS – Fixed a bug with all Sniper Rifles zooming to exact center when aiming down the sights.
Nazi Zombies has also seen some bug fixes, including a Zombie Map Exploit Fix, removing the ability to clip into a zombie spawn closet using revive mechanic in Laboratory.
Multiplayer combat in Call of Duty games has never been that social. You shoot the other players, or perhaps insult them in voice chat, and move on to the next game. But with Call of Duty: WWII, developer Sledgehammer Games designed the experience to be more social and memorable.
Publisher Activision and Sledgehammer showcased the Headquarters hub of WWII this week to show what it means. The Headquarters hub enables 48 players to gather in a group that spans more than just a single clan. It’s a group that can share achievements, videos, leaderboards, and compete with each other in one-on-one sessions to see who is the best at a particular skill. Even when you played in clans before, there were very few ways to communicate in the game.
Michael Condrey, co-CEO of Sledgehammer Games in San Mateo, California, believes that the hub will lead to better engagement and closer ties that will keep players in a more fulfilling Call of Duty experience. And he believes there’s no better time for that because Call of Duty is returning to World War II combat for the first time since 2008.
I caught up with Condrey at the Call of Duty booth at Gamescom, the huge event for gamers that drew hundreds of thousands to Cologne, Germany. I played the latest multiplayer map, Gibraltar, and talked with Condrey about Headquarters.
Here’s an edited transcript of our interview.
Above: Michael Condrey, co-CEO of Sledgehammer Games, at Gamescom 2017.
Michael Condrey: Gibraltar’s history is really remarkable. Super fascinating. I really enjoyed my time there. The multiplayer takes you to a few other places. You saw one in the reveal trailer, a battle on the USS Texas in the English Channel. That’s unique. There are a couple of others we haven’t talked about yet.
Gibraltar’s fascinating. The English and the Spanish fought over Gibraltar for decades. At one point, Churchill decided he was going to fortify it, a huge endeavor to fortify the Rock. Using 1940s technology, they bored through the Rock of Gibraltar, 55 kilometers of tunnels. There was so much rock taken out of these siege tunnels that they built the airport right at the base of it. They built hospitals, barracks, kitchens, garages. It’s Swiss cheese now, full of holes, all because that strategic anchor was so important. They have a British naval base there now. It’s a big refueling center now for access to the Mediterranean. And a lot of it’s been preserved as a memorial.
GamesBeat: Did it ever see any action?
Condrey: It was bombed, and there were some naval battles, but nothing on land. It’s unique, though, because on the top of Gibraltar, they had these giant guns with a 12-mile range. North Africa is only seven miles away. They could shoot five miles into Africa. It was a huge power play to control shipping into the Mediterranean. There was a huge investment there. Gibraltar is new to the beta. We also have another map that we can’t talk about now.
GamesBeat: It’s a very tight map. It seems like it has very small areas.
Condrey: We’d call it a medium-sized map. It’s bigger than the Pointe du Hoc map, for sure. It’s good for objective gameplay like Hardpoint. It has the side flanking routes and some elevation change, which is cool. I like the elevation change, because it gives you this feeling of different ways to approach threats and threat lanes.
You’re playing with divisions now, part of the player progression, so you can see what it’s like to pick your division and your basic training.
GamesBeat: Can you swap that on the fly, or are you committing to one division?
Condrey: There are five divisions. You progress on every one of them. As you progress, you have the ability to unlock different divisions. I have a series of unlock tokens, and I can use those to create a new division or unlock basic training. Our soldier really has two fundamental choices now: what division do you want to be in and what single basic training you want to take. Unlike before, in Pick 10, which had lots of choices — we found that those two choices still allow players to craft their own play style.
I’ll unlock a new one here. It tells you what you get. The infantry there get the bayonet on the rifles. Airborne gets the suppressors. Each division has a unique skill. Let’s do expeditionary. I get a unique skin, a uniform, and I get the shotgun with incendiary shells, which do damage over time. I can add one basic training — take two primaries, or reload faster.
GamesBeat: What does “forage” there mean?
Condrey: I can pick up more ammunition from downed enemies. Each of these is a skill you can unlock as you progress, and you choose one. Your division plus your basic training skill defines your soldier. I can go in and customize. I’ll unlock different unique uniforms. This is unique to the expeditionary force, so if you see him you know where he’s from. Obviously you can go in and personalize your weapons. You can choose from a number of score streaks. Right now the beta only allows you to progress to level 20, so this is just a slice of all the new options.
GamesBeat: You’re mixed in with everybody else, right? You’re not grouped with other people in the same division.
Condrey: That’s right. It’s just Allied versus Axis. Within each side, it’ll be a makeup of different divisions. It’s great for something like our new War mode, where you’re going to want to have some guys with smoke grenades that are fast, and some mountain division guys with big LMGs. It allows you to craft a team of different people if you party up.
GamesBeat: How many maps are you expecting to launch with?
Condrey: In line with other Call of Duty games — and this doesn’t include the War maps or Headquarters — we’ll have at least 10 multiplayer maps, Zombies, campaign. It’s pretty robust.
We showed Headquarters to everybody as part of the presentation before we started. You know the concept of Headquarters, right? This has been going for six years, since the beginning of Advanced Warfare, trying to bring your character to life and really personalize yourself and bring you to the war. Now we want to give you place that’s not just the war. It’s a social place you can be rewarded. This is a piece we’re going to unveil tomorrow.
You and I, over the years, have probably had about the same kill/death ratio, game to game. Something like that allows you to really hone in on — I’m not one that gets a lot of kill streaks and things like that, but with that you’re able to practice so that when you do get it, it’s a lot more effective. There are lots of things like that that you can do to improve.
Above: War zone map in Call of Duty: WWII.
GamesBeat: Usually when I get it it’s a surprise, and then I think, “Hey, wait, I don’t know how to do this.”
Condrey: Most people have that experience, right? Even Brian and I, we’re pretty good, but every new year you get a score streak and you think, “What is this? How am I supposed to use it?” Then you’ve wasted it. But you can go in and practice things like the turret gunner, one of the really high-end ones, similar to the chopper gunner in Black Ops II.
The cool thing for us is, we know that a whole bunch of players just want to be social and do things that aren’t gun-on-gun action. You can hang out and be social. You can party up. You can customize your guys. You can go play Zombies from Headquarters.

As you’ve probably heard, the House of Representatives recently passed a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare (also known as the Affordable Care Act) with the American Health Care Act (AHCA).
The ACHA could take away protections that Obamacare had in place for Americans with preexisting conditions, which could make health care less affordable for those who need it most. On Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver had strong words about the bill.
“Yes, they took a bad thing, and managed to make it even worse,” Oliver said on his HBO show. “It’s like watching Mariah Carey’s ‘Glitter’ and saying, ‘You know what this needs? Jar Jar Binks.'”
The host also mocked one congressman who asked a reporter to explain part of the bill, which he had not read in full.
“Okay. I can explain that to you right now,” Oliver said. “This bill could cause many of your constituents to get thrown into an individual marketplace they cannot afford, and when they realize that, they are going to be furious with you. Essentially: You f—ed up.”
Oliver closed the segment by encouraging viewers to take action.
“It is dangerous to assume that this bill will die on its own. Your Senators are incredibly important right now and they’re going to recess soon, so you need to let them know how you feel about this,” he said. “Call your Senators. Call. Your. Senators.”

Making games is a huge group effort, and oftentimes the people that make up those groups don’t agree on what to do next. One notable example comes from gaming’s biggest franchise: Call of Duty studio Sledgehammer Games had to work through convincing many staffers to do the second World War instead of a sequel to Advance Warfare.
In a conversation at the GamesBeat Summit today in Berkeley, California, (watch it live), Sledgehammer Games founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey explained what happens when a significant portion of the staff wants to make one game and rest else wants to do something else. The game-making partners said that as part of their management philosophy, it’s crucial that a team show passion for the work of three years — or more — building the next Call of Duty. And after a fair bit of voting and arm-twisting, the team decided to go with Call of Duty: WWII over a sequel to the critically acclaimed Advance Warfare.
“At Sledgehammer Games, we believe that developers have to have passion for what they’re doing,” said Condrey. “You want them to be invested in the vision and the game itself to get the best out of them.”
To ensure that everyone is on board, Sledgehammer has adopted something of a parliamentary procedure where the heads propose an idea, and then the team votes on whether or not to adopt it.
“Every game we’ve done of Call of Duty for Activision, we’ve taken it to a team vote,” said Schofield. “ou don’t always get a majority the first time, so you talk through the issues and the opportunities, and you address each.”
Schofield insinuated that they did feel some creative pressure to continue building the world the team set up with Advance Warfare. That futuristic military shooter has many passionate fans, and the Sledgehammer cofounder noted that it was nominated for a number of awards.
“We were really proud of that game,” he said. “And [we had to ask ourselves]: Did we want to do a sequel, or did we want to return to the roots of the franchise? And we wanted that to be a studio decision.”
But while the studio as a whole came into the decision-making process in a big way, Condrey noted that he and Schofield can have an effect on the rest of the staff.
“If the two of us our aligned, we can be really passionate,” he said. “And that passion will get to the studio. And it’s really important that they see that we’re behind the idea.”
In this case, that idea was going back to World War II. And now, Call of Duty: WWII is due out this November.

Having had to rely on leaks and sources up and till today, fans finally found out that Call of Duty 2017 would indeed be based on the World War 2 era.
And with the new images supplied, we also know that it will not be a World at War sequel.
While we still don’t know if Call of Duty WW2 is set to land on the Nintendo Switch, as well as PS4, PC and Xbox One platforms, we do know when we’ll find out.
The official Call of Duty WW2 reveal livestream has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 26, at 6pm BST.
Call of Duty: WW2 will bring the series back to World War II after nearly ten years, with Sledgehammer Games the team working on the development for the Call of Duty 2017 title
And in a new message posted on Twitter, chief operating and development officer of Sledgehammer Games, Michael Condrey, teased more about the Call of Duty WW2 release date.
“The last hour at the studio has been amazing to finally share with fans what we’re bringing, coming November,” he said.
“It’s been a long time coming and we’ve been on research for the last two and half years, traveling all over Europe and the world, to research World War 2 to get this game right for fans.”
It’s almost a given that Call of Duty 2017 was set to arrive in November, however, it’s always good to know just in case.
The livestream will have all the big details of the new PS4 and Xbox One title and give fans a “a first look at Call of Duty: WWII” and “intel on the studio’s vision for the game.”
There was no confirmation today on which platforms the new game will be launched, so there’s still a chance something will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
While the Nintendo Switch isn’t as powerful as either the PS4 or Xbox One, Activision have released lower-specced versions of their titles in the past.
Both Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3 were available on Xbox 360 and PS3, although Infinite Warfare did skip last-gen platforms.
It follows a recent online leak, with an image of an alleged promotional poster for Call of Duty: WWII.
If the promotional poster is to be believed, then the Call of Duty WW2 release date has been set for November 3.
With November 3 falling on a Friday, the release date is plausible, especially based on previous Call of Duty games.
However, there is also the big chance that this might have been mocked up and made to look like the final product, while using some decent guesswork to get the launch date down.
It looks like Call of Duty 2017 may have a WW2 setting on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
The FamilyVideoGamers YouTube channel (which you can check out this link) claims to have been sent leaked promotional material that shows a WWII setting for the upcoming COD.
This includes a promotional poster featuring the D-Day landings, as well as various steelbook cases for the game.
The FamilyVideoGamers video goes into more details about the images, which were sent by an anonymous source that is said to have a history of successful leaks in the past.
Some users on Reddit have claimed that one of the stills is from Saving Private Ryan, but there’s currently no proof of that. Still, it’s worth taking with a pinch of salt until Activision”s official announcement.
It would certainly make sense after the lukewarm reaction to last year’s game, especially compared to the WWI set Battlefield 1.
You can check out screengrabs of some of the leaked images below…
Sledgehammer Games is making this year’s instalment of the Call of Duty shooter series.
Based on an old Sledgehammer Twitter post, it was previously suggested that the new Call of Duty would be set in London during one of the great world wars, which ties in to these new leaks.
Published on New Year’s Day, the snippet features an old engine – possibly a steam engine – that judders into life, before the dials turn to ‘2017’.
Just as those numbers align, you’ll then hear an old-timey chime, which many believe to be the sound of London’s Big Ben.
Sledgehammer Games boss Glen Schofield has also posted a few teasers about the upcoming reveal for Call of Duty 2017.
Stating that his hands were tied when it came to giving out big details, Schofield told fans on Twitter: “There’s nothing I can say about the game except there are boots and ground and I guess some roots. I hope I can talk soon or I may implode.
“Wait until we reveal. You’re gonna go nuts. Our best yet dude! Man, I’m so psyched to show it…someday.”
He also hinted that the reveal date has been set, although he wasn’t in a position to share more, adding: “I don’t know. I just make the game. Actually I was in a meeting and just when they said the date, I sneezed. Didn’t hear it.”
