  • In a recent interview with The Wrap, Sarah Michelle Gellar said she’s not interested in appearing in a forthcoming “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot.
  • Gellar, who played the titular role Buffy Summers, said that she has moved on from the role and will not appear in an on-screen or be involved in any other capacity.
  • “I don’t know anything about it, honestly. I think that it’s a great story and I’m glad that it will get retold and hope that people will watch it,” she said. “But, you know, I’ve told my story with it.”
  • The reboot, will take place 15 years after the original series’ finale in 2003 and center around a new slayer.
  • Gellar will be focusing on other projects, like her Super Bowl ad, which will air on Sunday.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is currently starring in her first Super Bowl ad.

From the sound of things, she is not on the verge of starring in the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot. When asked about potentially appearing on the series, Gellar responded, saying: “I don’t know anything about it, honestly. I think that it’s a great story and I’m glad that it will get retold and hope that people will watch it. But, you know, I’ve told my story with it.”

Book Excerpt: Meet the New ‘Slayer’ from the ‘Buffy’ Universe https://briefnews.eu/book-excerpt-meet-the-new-slayer-from-the-buffy-universe/ https://briefnews.eu/book-excerpt-meet-the-new-slayer-from-the-buffy-universe/#respond Thu, 03 Jan 2019 02:25:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/book-excerpt-meet-the-new-slayer-from-the-buffy-universe/ Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains one of our forever faves, a whip-smart, wickedly funny, and proudly empowering series that, unlike a lot of your favorite ‘90s pop culture, still holds up. So we’re just fine with the expansion of the “Buffy universe” in the form of both new television ventures and new books — such as Slayer, Kiersten White’s new novel (out next Tuesday in hardback and ebook from Simon Pulse), which introduces us to new slayer Nina. And, per the press release, “Thanks to Buffy, the famous (and infamous) Slayer that Nina’s father died protecting, Nina is not only the newest Chosen One—she’s the last Slayer, ever. Period.”

We’re proud to present this exclusive excerpt from Slayer:

FROM CHAPTER FOUR OF ‘SLAYER’

We had three mothers, each with a distinct time period.

The first: dream mother.

In my memory, she smells like snickerdoodles.

She sang to us. Read books with pictures of happy things instead of scaly demons. Laughed. I think she laughed, anyway. Whenever I try to picture it, I can’t quite manage to match up sound with image. It’s like watching a silent movie. And the end of the movie is my dad, with his graying mustache and his kind eyes, kneeling to give each of us a hug.

Mom says something to him—what does she say?—then kisses him. We wave as he walks out the door. Mom looks proud and sad all at once and shoos us into the kitchen for cookies.

My dad never came back, and that mom—snickerdoodle mom—was gone too. In a way, Buffy took both of them from me. I never met the Slayer. I don’t even know if she knew we existed. But when my dad died for her, dream mother died too.

The second: ghost mother.

After that night we were attacked in the cemetery, Mom was always there, but . . . she wasn’t. We moved constantly. I can’t remember her working or doing anything.

There were no cookies. There was only the two of us and our mother, hovering. Haunting and haunted. Standing by the window with the curtains drawn, peering out the crack where they didn’t quite meet. We had lost our father, and we lost our mother too. She was a shell of herself. We looked to her for comfort and found only fear. So Artemis and I whispered, played quieter. Hid our stakes in less obvious places so she’d stop taking them away. Figured out how to care for each other so we wouldn’t disrupt her vigil. It wasn’t ideal, but it was okay.

And then everything burned down.

The third: not mother.

After the fire, she stopped being our mother and started being a Watcher. I didn’t realize how odd it was that we had been raised apart from them until we rejoined them in London and I saw how Watcher society functioned. We didn’t even live together as a family anymore. Artemis and I went to the dorms, and my mother had her own apartment in the Council’s wing.

It felt like she was rejecting me again. But maybe part of her decision to switch from being a mother to being a Watcher was so that she didn’t have to face me. We never once talked about why she picked Artemis first. I sometimes thought about forcing it, but in the end, I preferred not knowing. It couldn’t be any worse than what her actual explanation would be for why she left me behind.

I hadn’t died that night, but sometimes, when I was with my mother, it felt like I had. Like I was as missing from her world as my dad was.

Fox is Itching for a ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival, But Not Without Joss Whedon https://briefnews.eu/fox-is-itching-for-a-buffy-the-vampire-slayer-revival-but-not-without-joss-whedon/ https://briefnews.eu/fox-is-itching-for-a-buffy-the-vampire-slayer-revival-but-not-without-joss-whedon/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 18:40:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fox-is-itching-for-a-buffy-the-vampire-slayer-revival-but-not-without-joss-whedon/ buffy the vampire slayer revival

Buffy the Vampire Slayer knows a thing or two about letting things stay six feet under. But in the age of a million revivals and reboots, even the slayer of the undead could end up resurrected.

A Fox executive says that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival has been “frequently” discussed at the Fox Television Group. But thankfully, the revival would never move forward without the blessing of creator Joss Whedon.

Fox TV group chair Gary Newman says that the group has been eyeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer as its next potential reboot, according to Variety. “I think if you look in our library, Buffy is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back,” Newman said at the at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem.

But almost immediately, Newman acknowledged that he “wouldn’t get out of the building alive” if he announced a Buffy revival:

“It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.”

Hear that Joss? If the apocalypse comes and you want to return to Buffy, beep Fox.

A revival of Whedon’s landmark ’90s supernatural series has been bandied about since the show went off the air in 2003. There was even talk of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie reboot eight years ago.

And Whedon’s reaction to a revival has swung from straight-up rejection (“I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death.  But, you know, AFTER,” Whedon told E! Online in 2010) to reluctant acceptance. When show celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, Whedon told EW:

“Everything sort of finds its way back somewhere. I’ve been trying deliberately to move forward and do something a little bit different. But yeah, the great thing is everybody looks great, and the other great thing is the show is about growing up. If we did it with these guys, they’d be the age they basically are. They’d probably play a little younger because they can do that. But yeah, you’d see somebody going through their life at a different stage.

If a revival does happen, it does call into question what happens to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, which continued the show’s story after the season 7 finale. Will they be erased from existence? Or will they influence the stories for the revival a la the Star Wars Expanded Universe? I hope the latter, because some of those stories are bonkers.

The Case Against a Revival

Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as the titular Buffy in the seminal ’90s horror/teen soap about a young girl who is fated to slay vampires and demons. Buffy the Vampire Slayer took what could have been a gimmick (“high school is hell”) and turned it into one of the best TV shows in history.

It was a groundbreaking series that earned a devoted following over its seven seasons — including myself. It’s still inspiring to rewatch Buffy today and see how far ahead of the curve it was for complex, strong female characters and emotionally-driven storytelling. You can see everything from Jessica Jones to Teen Wolf taking its cues from Buffy.

That’s why Fox should leave Buffy as is. There are some things that a revival could improve on — the show’s lack of diversity for one — but Buffy the Vampire Slayer left a lasting legacy that can only be tarnished by a revival.

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Actress Amber Benson to Star in ‘The Nightmare Gallery’ https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-actress-amber-benson-to-star-in-the-nightmare-gallery/ https://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-actress-amber-benson-to-star-in-the-nightmare-gallery/#respond Sat, 03 Jun 2017 08:45:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-actress-amber-benson-to-star-in-the-nightmare-gallery/ Amber Benson

Tara may have been ripped tragically from the world and from us Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, but Amber Benson is still acting in projects that recall the sweet, vulnerable witch who stole Willow’s, and our, hearts.

The 40-year-old actress’ new horror drama The Nightmare Gallery, feels like a nod to her roots, with a starring role as an gay anthropology professor who investigates the mysterious, supernatural disappearance of one of her students. Maybe if Tara had lived, this would be the kind of adventures she would have.

Amber Benson will star in Seraph Films’ upcoming feature film, The Nightmare Gallery, directed by Gene Blalock — who is also a co-founder of Seraph Films. The project is a co-production with AWOL Studios.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Nightmare Gallery below:

The story follows Amber Benson as an anthropology professor as she investigates the sudden, suspicious disappearance of her star pupil. A mysterious collection of occult artifacts leads her on a nightmarish, Da Vinci Code-esque journey toward an unspeakable truth that will threaten her career, her marriage, and her sanity. Three-time Tony nominated actor Kevin Chamberlin (Road to Perdition, Jessie) is attached in a co-starring role as a psychiatrist who assists in the professor’s investigation.

I said earlier I’d love this movie as the continuing adventures of Tara (and presumably Willow as her unseen wife) in a hypothetical situation in which she survives Buffy the Vampire Slayer and lives happily solving supernatural mysteries, though I’d probably take it without the “unspeakable truth” threatening her career, marriage, and sanity. The Nightmare Gallery itself sounds like an intriguing mystery horror movie with pleasing LGBT aspects — something rarely seen in genre movies outside of token stock characters.

In a press release, director Blalock stressed the importance of the LGBT elements, and keeping a gay character as fleshed out and complex as possible:

“One of the driving forces behind this film is the realization that very few movies, particularly in the horror genre, feature LGBTQ characters and treat them like normal people, rather than caricatures. So while the anthropology professor is married to another woman, her sexual orientation doesn’t tokenize her or diminish the nuance of her characterization. Our intention with this film is to craft an outstanding horror film in its own right, but also one that would promote the idea that genre films can be about someone other than straight, white men and women.”

The Nightmare Gallery is slated to begin production this summer, with a screenplay by Jhan Harp and Rob Stith. Jhan Harp is producing with Charles Hilliard, of AWOL Studios, is an executive producer as well as Chad Carpenter, Paloma Bilson, and Phil Goldberg from Seraph.

No case against Kentucky ‘drone slayer,’ judge says https://briefnews.eu/no-case-against-kentucky-drone-slayer-judge-says/ https://briefnews.eu/no-case-against-kentucky-drone-slayer-judge-says/#respond Fri, 24 Mar 2017 17:08:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-case-against-kentucky-drone-slayer-judge-says/

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit against a Kentucky man who shot down a drone flying over his property and dubbed himself a “drone slayer.” The key issue in the case remains unresolved, however, and may move to a higher court venue.

William Merideth shot down a drone that he said was flying over his property in 2015, and later sold T-shirts with the phrase “drone slayer” printed on them. David Boggs, who piloted the drone, sued Merideth in federal court in Louisville for $ 1,500 in damages and asked for a decision on whether his activities qualified as trespassing.

US District Judge Thomas B. Russell dismissed the case this week, ruling that his federal court was not a proper venue for it, according to Ars Technica. Boggs had asked for damages under Kentucky state law, the judge said.

Boggs’ attorney, James Mackler, had argued that the drone was regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and that the incident was relevant to federal law. The judge disagreed, saying that the FAA “has not sought to enforce any such regulations in this case,” and that they would be “ancillary” to Boggs’ claim to damages.

“We respect the judge’s ruling and have to have a conversation with our client about an appeal,” Mackler told Ars Technica, noting his client was “disappointed” by the decision.

“This remains an extraordinarily important issue for the commercial and hobby issue,” Mackler added. “We desperately need clarification from this issue and that has to come from the federal level. Drones are continuing to be shot down.”

Mackler and Boggs have not yet decided if they will file an appeal. They could ask Russell to reconsider the ruling, or take it up to the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

US laws and regulations have struggled to catch up with the recent proliferation of commercial and hobbyist drones. Current FAA regulations restrict commercial and hobby drones to altitudes below 400ft (122 meters) and require them to be in the operator’s line of sight.

The current precedent for asserting property rights over one’s airspace relies on the 1946 Supreme Court case United States v. Causby, which allowed a farmer in North Carolina to claim rights up to 83ft (25 meters) in the air.
