New figures released on Monday expose the scale of illegal cannabis farming in the British capital, where police said they had found 314 farms since 2016 — the equivalent of one every two days — according to Scotland Yard data obtained by the London Evening Standard.

One policeman, Detective Superintendent Lee Hill, told the Standard that there was a “human, emotional” toll in finding cannabis farms because there are so often children being exploited on them in dangerous situations. In particular, he said Vietnamese boys and teenagers are often asked to watch over properties in case rival gangs approach or a police raid is planned. “I’ve recovered children who are being exploited. They are there to protect the properties,” Hill said.

While the farms were found in every single borough of London, the highest concentration was found in Croydon in south London, with 30 factories found there in total. Hill said that the number was so high in Croydon for a number of reasons, including the fact that the borough was London’s largest and that it had high levels of gang activity and violence.

“I think we can make links to gang activity. Some of the recoveries are within gang territory areas. A lot of it does comes down to organized criminality,” he said. Hill said that historically the farms were found in industrial estates, but that it was becoming more common to find them in attics and residential properties.

Jakub Sobik, a spokesman for Anti-Slavery International, told Reuters the figures were “extremely worrying” and that it meant “potentially thousands of children and young people are being trafficked from Vietnam and exploited by ruthless criminal gangs”.

Last year, Chloe Setter, the head of advocacy at anti-child trafficking organization ECPAT UK, said that not enough people who use cannabis were aware of the levels of exploitation in cannabis supply chains and that they should consider it in future. Setter also said that vulnerable young people were “treated as criminals” instead of victims of “modern slavery” which “re-traumatizes” them and makes it more difficult to gain their trust.

Earlier this year, the British government faced criticism when it refused to offer asylum to a Vietnamese orphan who had been trafficked into the country to work in the cannabis industry.

More than 2,000 victims of suspected child trafficking were referred to authorities in Britain last year — a 66 percent increase on the year before — with most facing sexual exploitation, forced labour or some form of domestic servitude.

‘Satan’s Slaves’ Review: The Scariest Film Of 2018 You Haven’t Heard Of Yet [What The Fest?! 2018] https://briefnews.eu/satans-slaves-review-the-scariest-film-of-2018-you-havent-heard-of-yet-what-the-fest-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/satans-slaves-review-the-scariest-film-of-2018-you-havent-heard-of-yet-what-the-fest-2018/#respond Mon, 02 Apr 2018 01:13:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/satans-slaves-review-the-scariest-film-of-2018-you-havent-heard-of-yet-what-the-fest-2018/ Satan's Slaves Review

Satan’s Slaves reminds me of Babak Anvari’s Under The Shadow – two piss-yourself-scary stories so deeply rooted in overseas culture and indigenous circumstance. Joko Anwar’s Indonesian monstrosity does not mess around, readers. Within minutes you’ll be hit with the first of many paranormal punches that land like Manny Pacquiao on a speed bag, one after the other with impressive stamina. Scares are executed via a madman’s blueprint, birthed from beyond the grave and traced from your gnarliest nightmares. I do not scare easy, but you better believe this impossibly proficient downpour of demonization turned me into Jumpy McScreamsALot. Carved by tools that have been sharpened, dipped in acid and blessed by Satan for good measure. Take no prisoners terror, make no mistake.

A Quiet Place and Hereditary have already been dubbed 2018’s scariest films to beat, but you can add Satan’s Slaves to that list now – the most horrifying film of 2018 you haven’t heard of yet.

Plotting centers around Rini’s (Tara Basro) maybe-or-maybe-not doomed family on the outskirts of Jakarta. Mother (Ayu Laksmi) is bedridden by a mystery disease that makes her look vaguely like a ghost. Father’s (Bront Palarae) monetary situation barely covers monthly bills. Rini and brother Tony (Endy Arfian) keep little brothers Bondi (Nasar Annuz) and Ian (M. Adhiyat) in line – Ian a mute who only communicates through sign language. Day and night Mother rings her beckoning bell whenever aid is required, but it’s not without a constant creep factor that begins to rule over Rini’s family. Is her once successful musician Mother medically sick, or are malevolent puppeteers trying to destroy this otherwise struggling family unit? Spoiler alert – it’s probably the latter.

Satan’s Slaves doesn’t hesitate to establish itself as immersive past-bedtime nightmare fuel. Anwar knows how to scare you – expected or not – through simple but sadistic thriller motions (the View-Master, hair comb, double-dream, etc). An ominous Haunted Mansion portrait that oversees on particularly “HELL NAW” stretch of hallway or the ding-a-ling of a servant’s bell (but wait, where’s Mother?). Saturated water cellar seclusion or wide-open graveyard views from a child’s bedroom. Expect nothing short of a middle finger to failed genre laziness that populates so much of today’s mainstream horror cinema. Dreadful atmospheres capitalize on ravenous tones that in-turn unleash a tempest’s fury of fangs-out fearfulness.

Translation: I hope you don’t scare easily, and if you do, record your in-movie reactions because it’ll be YouTube gold.

“But Matt, is Satan’s Slaves just a string of above/average jump scares?” Ha! Anwar’s command of simplistic traumas is surgical and downright ruthless. The macabre awareness of James Wan meets the wild absurdity of Ben Wheatley or Can Evrenol, as to not spoil specific movie references. Twists and turns shift from blanketed apparition spooks to Rosemary’s Baby inspirations to goofball side characters and gruesome realities. A veritable piñata filled with gooey gut-punches and unbearable imagery. But you know what the best part is? It’s all sustained so sensationally well – 100-plus minutes of pure laugh-in-your-face audience torment.

Satan's Slaves Review

Performances are key in this ceremonious crucible of character breakdowns, just as much as Indonesian culture grounds jolts in ritual chants and umbrella-holding watchers. With a family that spans numerous generations living in the same isolated home, Satan’s Slaves’ plays the creepy kid game enough to delay parenthood desires for a solid decade. To honor the intricacies in each actor’s journey would spoil certain twists and secrets, so that won’t be happening – but don’t expect a subtitled affair where credits roll without anyone paying attention. Anwar has every opportunity to let this midnight massacring of safety become the cookie-cutter Insidious rip so many filmmakers seem content in creating, but he never succumbs to them. The result is full commitment from the cast and an unbelievable vision that’s unfiltered in its satanic assault.

Cinematographer Ical Tanjung guides sightlines into perfect screams that go along with Anwar’s long, broody gazes. Such sequences can sometimes be a dangerous gamble – fixed lenses without tension – but Tanjung’s framing unlocks frequent situational panic attacks. Poor children left staring at a door that slowly creeks open, witchy undead hands reaching through a shadowed sliver of an opening. Deathly designs are responsible for jaw-slacked, white-eyed visitors who refuse to stay buried not only as a means of torment, but to tease power struggles from beyond the living realm. Linear haunt-and-ditch events are extrapolated by surprise guests (of the living persuasion), magazine exposés and more history lessons than Rini wants to understand. And just when you think it’s over? Anwar pays off every blood-red herring with one mangled and malformed snarling behemoth of a third act. Always evolving, growing nastier by the scene.

There’s a reason why Pengabdi Setan, aka Satan’s Slaves, is the best-selling Indonesian film of 2017 (as of November, assuming the record stood). You can even reference Joko Anwar’s debilitating family curse in debates about stellar remakes – his a reimagining of Sisworo Gautama Putra’s 1980 film of the same name. Every death-dealing aspect syncs so systematically well in this housebound horror story from the twang of screeching string instrumentation, urban legend undertones and downright insatiable thirsts for genre purity. Believe me, I wouldn’t churn such festival hype if it wasn’t warranted – Satan’s Slaves a full-service haunter with its finger on the pulse of fear incarnate.

Thou shall not turn people into robot slaves: Priest & govt adviser writes ‘10 Commandments of AI’ https://briefnews.eu/thou-shall-not-turn-people-into-robot-slaves-priest-govt-adviser-writes-10-commandments-of-ai/ https://briefnews.eu/thou-shall-not-turn-people-into-robot-slaves-priest-govt-adviser-writes-10-commandments-of-ai/#respond Mon, 05 Mar 2018 13:06:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thou-shall-not-turn-people-into-robot-slaves-priest-govt-adviser-writes-10-commandments-of-ai/ Ten commandments to protect humans from potential abuses from Artificial Intelligence have been issued by a Church of England Bishop. The Rt Rev the Lord Bishop of Oxford sits on the House of Lords select committee on AI.

While AI is often hailed as the future of economic development, there are many who are more wary of the technology’s advance. Right Rev Steven Croft set out his ‘commandments’ to address such concerns at a policy debate in London last week.

Bishop Croft had become worried after hearing evidence of the technology’s power while sitting on the Lords committee on AI, previously warning that “every development in Artificial Intelligence raises new questions about what it means to be human.”

Speaking at the event ‘Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: Innovation, Funding and Policy Priorities’, the Bishop created his own Decalogue for AI. Croft’s commandments focused on data protection, ethics, criminal subversion and restrictions on AI’s power “to destroy.”

The commandments contain general advice such as “AI should be designed for all, and benefit humanity” as well as more political dictums; “The application of AI should be to reduce inequality of wealth, health, and opportunity” and AI should not “subvert the values of our democracy.”

Rather than be a driver of economic gain, the bishop believes AI should be “…directed toward the most urgent problems facing humanity.” The list contains an inevitable reference to a robot revolution, warning: “The autonomous power to hurt or destroy should never be vested in artificial intelligence.”

Uber partners with anti-human trafficking organizations to help drivers report suspected sex slaves https://briefnews.eu/uber-partners-with-anti-human-trafficking-organizations-to-help-drivers-report-suspected-sex-slaves/ https://briefnews.eu/uber-partners-with-anti-human-trafficking-organizations-to-help-drivers-report-suspected-sex-slaves/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 14:38:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uber-partners-with-anti-human-trafficking-organizations-to-help-drivers-report-suspected-sex-slaves/

Uber is teaming up with a number of anti-human trafficking organizations to help drivers spot sexual slavery victims, or those who are being held captive or forced into labor against their will.

To mark Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the ride-hailing giant is working with the Polaris Project, a nonprofit that works to combat modern-day slavery, with a view toward promoting resources and a hotline for reporting suspicious activity. Indeed, all U.S. drivers will receive in-app messages with the hotline number, in addition to information on how to spot possible human trafficking.

Additionally, Uber said that it has partnered with Thorn, an organization that focuses on the use of technology to prevent child pornography and the spread of sexual slavery through the internet. The organization was founded by Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher and has worked with the likes of Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter to help thwart sexual abuse online.

While Uber isn’t a name that’s synonymous with good deeds, the company has been proactive in helping find missing children by opening its drivers’ app to AMBER alerts, and it has also partnered with other anti-trafficking organizations, such as ECPAT-USA. Indeed, in 2016, Uber signed the ECPAT Code, which is a set of guidelines focused on helping tourism-related companies prevent child sex tourism and trafficking.

With hundreds of thousands of drivers across the U.S., Uber is in a strong position to disseminate information to people on the ground — those who may have direct access to human trafficking outfits. Back in 2016, an Uber driver actually helped save a 16-year-old sex slave after eavesdropping on a conversation in his car, so it’s clear that Uber drivers may be uniquely positioned to help.

“Both research and experience operating the National Human Trafficking Hotline has shown us that ride sharing services like Uber have a significant role to play in disrupting human trafficking and helping survivors to find freedom,” noted Polaris CEO Bradley Miles. “Ensuring that drivers who recognize the signs of human trafficking know that the hotline is available and can help is an important step toward turning awareness into action and making a real difference in people’s lives.”

Uber’s latest push is aimed only at U.S. drivers, however the company said that it plans to introduce similar initiatives in other countries.

Young Marx and The Slaves Of Solitude review: Vivid portraits and an eye for period detail https://briefnews.eu/young-marx-and-the-slaves-of-solitude-review-vivid-portraits-and-an-eye-for-period-detail/ https://briefnews.eu/young-marx-and-the-slaves-of-solitude-review-vivid-portraits-and-an-eye-for-period-detail/#respond Sun, 05 Nov 2017 02:28:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/young-marx-and-the-slaves-of-solitude-review-vivid-portraits-and-an-eye-for-period-detail/

According to Richard Bean and Clive Coleman, the joint authors of Young Marx, it does so within the same play.

Young Marx is set in 1850, a fallow period in Marx’s life, two years after the publication of the Communist Manifesto and 17 years before the first volume of Das Kapital.

He and his family are living in Soho, subsidised in part by his wealthy associate Friedrich Engels and, in part, by pawning his aristocratic wife’s family silver.

Bean and Coleman play fast and loose with history: forgivably amalgamating Marx’s children and claiming that he was the father of his housekeeper’s illegitimate son (which has never been proven); less forgivably making Marx take part in a duel of honour with a fellow communist, August von Willich, when the challenge was political and Marx refused to fight.

At its best the play offers a vivid portrait of Marx’s chaotic family life at a time when he was destitute, drunk and disillusioned.

Its tone, however, is confused: neither Marx and Engels’ impassioned speeches on the fate of the poor and Parisian revolutionaries, nor the tragic death of Marx’s infant son, sit comfortably alongside farcical scenes of fisticuffs in the reading room of the British Museum and of Marx hiding from bailiffs in a cupboard.

Nicholas Hytner’s lively production on Mark Thompson’s atmospheric set does its best to yoke together these disparate elements.

Rory Kinnear manages to make even the grossly insensitive Marx sympathetic.

Nancy Carroll is excellent as ever as his long-suffering wife.

Oliver Chris is the picture of forbearance as the endlessly supportive Engels, and there is strong support from Laura Elphinstone and Eben Figueiredo.

Young Marx is the first production at the splendid new Bridge Theatre, which aims to shift London’s theatrical hub from the West End to the East.

Marx might not have approved of its location among gleaming tower blocks, but I was greatly taken by its elegance, spaciousness, and comfortable seats.

We are on more familiar territory, both dramatically and topographically, with Nicholas Wright’s eloquent and sensitive adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s unjustly neglected novel, The Slaves Of Solitude.

John Schlesinger’s Yanks meets Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables as two exotic foreigners, an American GI and a German refugee, cause consternation among the residents of a genteel boarding house in wartime Henley-on-Thames.

In particular, they ruffle the cosy existence of prim-and-proper Enid Roach, a publisher’s reader, whose sole experience of love has been an adulterous affair with her boss.

Fenella Woolgar beautifully delineates Enid’s longing to be more than she is and fear that she has left it too late.

Daon Broni and Lucy Cohu excel as the GI and the refugee and there are delightful comic vignettes from Clive Francis, Gwen Taylor, Amanda Walker and Richard Tate.

They play four elderly lodgers whose lives are as faded and frayed as the furniture in Tim Hatley’s richly evocative set.

Jonathan Kent directs with an impeccable eye for emotional truth and period detail.

Ben Carson clarifies remarks on slaves as immigrants, calls them ‘two entirely different experiences’ https://briefnews.eu/ben-carson-clarifies-remarks-on-slaves-as-immigrants-calls-them-two-entirely-different-experiences/ https://briefnews.eu/ben-carson-clarifies-remarks-on-slaves-as-immigrants-calls-them-two-entirely-different-experiences/#respond Tue, 07 Mar 2017 06:28:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ben-carson-clarifies-remarks-on-slaves-as-immigrants-calls-them-two-entirely-different-experiences/ Ben CarsonChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Ben Carson clarified statements he made on Monday in which he seemed to describe African slaves as immigrants.

In a statement issued Monday night on his Facebook page, Carson said: “The slave narrative and immigrant narrative are two entirely different experiences. Slaves were ripped from their families and their homes and forced against their will after being sold into slavery by slave traders.”

During a speech earlier Monday, the newly minted Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary appeared to refer to slaves as “immigrants” in an address to department employees on Monday that often veered off-topic.

The original speech transcription read:

“There were immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder, for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”

Carson’s original comments were widely rebuked. Some critics accused him of trying to dismiss the undisputed history of slavery in America.
