BBC Breakfast returned with Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt presenting live from the studio in Media City.

Joining them on a live video link was Sir Keir Starmer MP, who spoke passionately about the meeting being held today which will see several opposition party leaders gather to come up with a plan to stop a No Deal Brexit.

During the conversation, Minchin wanted to find out why their were strong views against Boris Johnson’s proposal and it wasn’t long before Starmer hit out at the Prime Minister.

Stayt kicked off the discussion with: “Our top story today; later today Jeremy Corbyn will meet with other opposition party leaders as he looks to secure support for his plan to block a No Deal Brexit.”

“Well Shadow Secretary [Sir] Keir Starmer joins us now from westminster. What do you want out of this meeting today?” Minchin probed.

“The purpose of the meeting is to bring opposition leaders together and try to agree a plan into next week,” the guest replied.

“I think it’s really important we act swiftly because Prime Minister Johnson is taking us on this reckless route to a No Deal Brexit, which will have really important ramifications for our country and we have to stop him in that.

“And therefore the purpose of the meeting is to have a pretty frank and open discussion; to say to Boris Johnson as soon as we get back, ‘this parliament is not prepared to support a No Deal Brexit.’”

Minchin questioned: “What is the plan then? A vote of confidence? What is it? “

“As you may have seen this Prime Minister has apparently been taking advice on whether he can just shut down Parliament from 9 September through to the middle of October,” Stamer explained.

“That’s the signs of a Prime Minister who isn’t confident he’s going to get a deal and [someone who] doesn’t think he would win in a clash with parliament, so we’ve got to act quickly.”

Thos watching at home then saw Minchin continue with: “What are you trying to do? To get Brexit, delay Brexit, stop Brexit? What is it?”

“It is to stop a No Deal Brexit,” Starmer stated confidently. “We’re on this reckless course that Johnson has put us on.

“He’s not putting an alternative deal before us. He’s pursuing a course which is likely to end up as  No Deal Brexit, Parliament has never accepted that.

“Boris Johnson thinks he can just knock Parliament out of the way…there’s going to be this confrontation next week.

“We [opposition leaders] are going to take on a united front to take Johnson on in this reckless approach that he’s got.”

Later on in the show, leader of the Liberal Democrats party Jo Swinton MP joined from Westminster, where she spoke about what she wants from today’s meeting.

“I want us to be able to have confidence that we can stop the catastrophe of a No Deal Brexit,” she told Minchin.

“Brexit can be stopped! We do not need to settle for this damaging path for our country. I welcome the opportunity to talk with others on the opposition benches who are concerned about No Deal as well.”

'Paul Pogba is a myth… I would sell him in a heartbeat' – Man Utd star SLATED https://briefnews.eu/paul-pogba-is-a-myth-i-would-sell-him-in-a-heartbeat-man-utd-star-slated/ https://briefnews.eu/paul-pogba-is-a-myth-i-would-sell-him-in-a-heartbeat-man-utd-star-slated/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 11:11:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paul-pogba-is-a-myth-i-would-sell-him-in-a-heartbeat-man-utd-star-slated/

The Frenchman returned to Old Trafford this season buoyed from his World Cup triumph, but has once again proved underwhelming.

With a modest three goals and three assists, Pogba has been a passenger in some games this season, drawing criticism from fans and – more poignantly – his manager.

Pogba was stripped of his vice-captaincy duties after stoking rumours linking him away from Manchester, as well as criticising his team’s tactics after their 1-1 draw to Wolves in September.

The 25-year-old has, as per his time at Old Trafford, shown glimpses of brilliance, but the midfielder is not currently flavour of the month after his abysmal display against Southampton last weekend.

Jose Mourinho’s iron fist approach towards his struggling star has been scrutinised, but former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan subscribes to the United boss’ viewpoint.

“If I’m Ed Woodward and my champion was Mourinho I’d want to do something quite extreme to support him,” the outspoken Jordan told talkSPORT.

“I’d publicly get right behind him and put a stick right up Pogba’s backside in terms of straightening him out, so he knew where I stood.

“Frankly whoever wanted to sign Pogba in the first place… I’d send them home in a cab!

“I would sell Pogba in a heartbeat.”

Jordan was the Eagles chairman for 10 years before leaving the role in 2010, and has dealt with his fair share of divisive players.

“I think he is a malaise and has far too much to say for himself.

“And most of it has no relevance,” the 51-year-old businessman added.

“His performances on the pitch are far and away beneath what one expects of a player who is reported to be of the quality he is.

“The World Cup success with France was [N’Golo] Kante, [Antoine] Griezmann and [Kylian] Mbappe excelling in their individual roles.

“I think there was a lot of noise and rubbish coming from Pogba inside the dressing room – I think he’s all myth.”

Manchester United predicted line-up vs Fulham

Roberto Osuna slated to be activated by Astros on Sunday https://briefnews.eu/roberto-osuna-slated-to-be-activated-by-astros-on-sunday/ https://briefnews.eu/roberto-osuna-slated-to-be-activated-by-astros-on-sunday/#respond Sun, 05 Aug 2018 03:39:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roberto-osuna-slated-to-be-activated-by-astros-on-sunday/

Astros manager A.J. Hinch met privately with the team's owner and general manager on Saturday, a day ahead of reliever Roberto Osuna being activated following a 75-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

Hinch discussed the matter with owner Jim Crane and GM Jeff Luhnow, but declined to go into details. The manager said Osuna will join the club on Sunday and be activated for the series finale at Dodger Stadium.

Osuna was arrested in Toronto in May and charged with assaulting his girlfriend. No details have been made public and the matter is pending in court.

MLB handed him the second-longest suspension since its domestic violence policy was enacted three years ago and Osuna did not appeal.

The Astros acquired the right-handed reliever from the Blue Jays at the trade deadline this week. The move raised eyebrows in the clubhouse and around baseball since Houston had previously stated its no-tolerance policy regarding domestic violence.

'A lot has to happen'

The team released minor leaguer Danry Vasquez last spring after surveillance video surfaced showing him assaulting a woman.

Astros starters Justin Verlander and Lance McCullers Jr. were outspoken about their disgust on Twitter at that time.

"A lot has to happen tomorrow," Hinch said, "and as a team, family and group we'll navigate it together."

Osuna was not at Dodger Stadium on Saturday. He pitched one scoreless inning for Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday, allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Hinch's first order of business will be to talk with Osuna.

"I certainly want to get to know him and his background. I've never met him, never shook his hand," the manager said. "I know a little bit of his track record. We'll get into anything that he wants to. I'm his manager now so I think it's important to get to know him and learn what makes him be the player that he can be."

Increased scrutiny

The 23-year-old right-hander is the youngest pitcher to ever record 100 saves and he can throw 95 mph.

The World Series champion Astros are known for being a close-knit team that banded together to help Houston after last year's devastating floods triggered by Hurricane Harvey.

"That's not going to change," Hinch said.

The effect Osuna's presence has on the team will be closely scrutinized.

"We are going to handle it as a group as best we can," Hinch said. "We simply don't know and we aren't going to draw any conclusions at this point. We're going to welcome him on our team and begin the process of getting to know him."

Downton Abbey FILM slated for summer 2018 https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-film-slated-for-summer-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-film-slated-for-summer-2018/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 00:35:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-film-slated-for-summer-2018/

But they have not yet been able to sign up all of the cast from the TV series for the £25million silver screen version in summer 2018.

Dame Maggie Smith has said that she does not want to return.

Show creator Julian Fellowes is delighted at the film confirmation.

He wants to stick to the script he penned over a year ago and he does not want to change the plot because actors are unavailable.

But the success has made a headache for executives.

Fellowes said: “Trying to get everyone in one place, it’s like herding cats.”

Big names such as Elizabeth McGovern (Countess of Grantham), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates) and Hugh Bonneville (Earl of Grantham) have seen their careers soar thanks to the award-winning show.

The cast insist they want to return to the Abbey, which ended on ITV on Christmas Day 2015.

An insider said: “For months some of the cast have been dancing around a return, which made this year a no go.

“But now they are pushing ahead. They have a few people locked in and others verbally agreed, so they are going for it now. Rounding up the actors has been tough with so many seeing their careers explode on both sides of the pond, but they are determined to work it all out.”

Last month some of the cast admitted that there were issues with the movie schedule but added that it was “still a possibility”.

Allen Leech (Tom Branson) said: “There’s a great willingness among all of us to do it.”

Fellowes is still holding out hope Dame Maggie (Dowager Countess of Grantham) will return.

She has complained of the fame that the series has brought her and she feels that a Downton movie would be “squeezing the story dry”.

Executive producer Gareth Neame insisted that the film should feature Dame Maggie.

He said: “I think it would be a real loss without her and I’d hope very much that she’d want to be in the movie with everyone else.”

Neame added that there have been strings of rumours about her leaving the show from the beginning, which were unfounded. He has said that even if the Downton Abbey film is a hit, there will be no return to television.

He added: “There is any number of ways the show could spin off, but it is not going to happen within this lifetime of the show and not by us.”

Highclere Castle, near Newbury, Berkshire, where the original series was filmed, will be closed to visitors from May 30 to July 7 to allow exterior and interior filming.

More than 4,000MW of coal power slated for retirement in Texas. But why? https://briefnews.eu/more-than-4000mw-of-coal-power-slated-for-retirement-in-texas-but-why/ https://briefnews.eu/more-than-4000mw-of-coal-power-slated-for-retirement-in-texas-but-why/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 09:40:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/more-than-4000mw-of-coal-power-slated-for-retirement-in-texas-but-why/

Late last week, power company Vistra Energy announced that it would close two of its Texas coal plants by early 2018. In a press release, the company blamed “Sustained low wholesale power prices, an oversupplied renewable generation market, and low natural gas prices, along with other factors.”

Just the week before, Vistra subsidiary Luminant had announced another Texas plant closure, according to Reuters. The three Texas coal plants reflect more than 4GW of capacity. The plants are only the latest in a string of announced retirements from power companies that find their coal units offline more and more often due to low electricity prices.

But these closures came at a surprising time: the Trump administration has been pushing some of the most aggressive policies aimed at helping out coal plants that we’ve seen yet. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) moved to roll back the Clean Power Plan just last week, and, in late September, the Department of Energy proposed a rule that would increase compensation for facilities that can store 90 days of fuel onsite (i.e., coal and nuclear energy). Industry watchers expected the proposed lifelines would forestall exits from coal generation.

Star Wars Episode 9 fears as director’s new film is SLATED by critics – 'deliriously bad' https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-episode-9-fears-as-directors-new-film-is-slated-by-critics-deliriously-bad/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-episode-9-fears-as-directors-new-film-is-slated-by-critics-deliriously-bad/#respond Sat, 17 Jun 2017 14:23:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-episode-9-fears-as-directors-new-film-is-slated-by-critics-deliriously-bad/

Starring Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay, it’s a drama about how a small boy, played by Jaeden Lieberher, comes up with a plan to rescue his next-door-neighbour Christina (Maddie Ziegler).

On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an eyebrow-raising score of just 25%.

Vox called it “deliriously bad”, while The Telegraph questioned whether it could be “the worst film of the year”.

Time Out said: “The whole thing is boring and phony, with just a couple of lines of dialogue that feel sharp.”

AV Club wrote: “What Trevorrow and screenwriter Gregg Hurwitz have created is just a feature-length put-on that flirts queasily with fascism.”

New York Times called it a “tedious mess” while Washington Post said it “falls apart in a heap of loose pages, each one taken from a different script”.

Vulture raged: “It does not suffice to call The Book of Henry bad; it’s nonfunctional, so poorly conceived from the ground up as to slip out of the grasp of the usual standards one applies to narrative film.”

Safe to say, then, it’s not a hit.

Trevorrow’s next project is the final instalment of the current Star Wars saga, and there’s now concern over its quality.

“HI I AM NERVOUS ABOUT COLIN TREVORROW BEING IN CHARGE OF STAR WARS 9,” one person tweeted.

“I have a conspiracy theory Colin Trevorrow purposely made a horrendous movie with The Book of Henry just so he could get out of Star Wars,” someone else said.

However, reacting to the firestorm, another Twitter user said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if Colin Trevorrow just quits Star Wars cause you assholes won’t give him a break.”

Episode IX is set to film next January ahead of release in May 2019.

Before that, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi is out on December 14 of this year.

The foursome stormed the stage in an array of silver bodysuits to perform their popular single Shout Out To My Ex.

They certainly oozed confidence as they danced around the stage while belting out the hit.

Unfortunately, many slated the opening number, with one likening it to girls singing in a karaoke booth.

Taking to Twitter, one person tuning in at home wrote: “Don’t get the Little Mix hype. They’re literally just shouting?”

While another added: “@LittleMix @BRITs Yikes girls! Ik you can do better than this.”(sic)

“Little Mix sound like four girls who have got drunk in Tiger Tiger and stumbled into a karaoke booth #screaming #BRITs2017,” a third slammed.

Someone else continued: “They should have added the shouting in the actual single #BRITs2017 #LittleMixBRITs.”

However, the girls did get some support from their fans, with one tweeting: “@BRITs @LittleMix queens slay the brits #BRITVOTELITTLEMIX.”

Their performance came after Little Mix member e.

The silky number was not held in place tightly enough and as she flaunted her toned pins, it fell to the side and she flashed everything.

Her modesty was barely covered by a strategically placed pad as she chose to forgo underwear for the awards ceremony.

She was joined on the red carpet by her bandmates, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy Nelson and Perrie Edwards, who all opted for quirky gowns.

The Voice UK 2017: Will.i.am slated for his 'SCRIPTED' button blunder https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-uk-2017-will-i-am-slated-for-his-scripted-button-blunder/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-uk-2017-will-i-am-slated-for-his-scripted-button-blunder/#respond Sat, 04 Feb 2017 21:44:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-voice-uk-2017-will-i-am-slated-for-his-scripted-button-blunder/

Lawrence Hill from Hertfordshire was auditioning for the ITV talent competition when the incident happened.

The 25-year-old singer was coming towards the end of his performance when Will started to rub the ink off from his button.

Turning around by surprise, Will looked shocked, but fans are suspicious that the whole scenario was scripted.

Awkwardly explaining why he had turned around, Will said: “Check this out, sometimes magical things happen. Before you went on I drew a face. I realised there was a smudge on it.

“I pushed down on the button harder than I should… but he is pretty dope though! I believe in destiny. But destiny is also a destination. I was really cleaning off the button.”

Lawrence added: “Energies that we can’t control are in control at the moment,” before Jennifer Hudson said: “I don’t know about that, but your coach is crazy.”

“I’ve never felt so insulted yet happy at the same time in my entire life! I’m going to prove to him that I deserve a place on that team,” said Lawrence.

One viewer tweeted: “Sorry are we supposed to believe this bulls**t… it’s so scripted #TheVoice #TheVoiceUK.”

“#TheVoice Pretending to press the button by accident – one of the worst scripted ‘ideas’ ever seen on this show #shameful,” posted another.

A third added: “Scripted or not scripted that was CRUEL #THEVOICE.”

Tom Jones tweeted: “Smooth comeback @iamwill ! You deserve your place in the show fair and square @lawrencehmusic, well done. #TheVoiceUK.”
