The Israel Defense Forces’ attempt to smear medic Razan al-Najjar, the 21-year-old killed last week, backfired when a video it shared on social media was swiftly debunked.

The IDF shared an edited video of Najjar on both its English and Arabic spokesperson Twitter accounts on Thursday.

“Hamas’ use of human shields must stop.” it wrote in English. “Razan al-Najjar is not the angel of mercy that Hamas propaganda attempts to portray,” the Arabic spokesman Avichay Edraee’s tweet reads. The Arabic version of the video begins with an image of Najjar with angel wings and a halo. The video, which has an ominous soundtrack, claims Najjar was “incited by Hamas,” and it shows footage of Najjar throwing a gas canister.

Another clip shows an interview with Najjar – which has been carefully edited to exclude half of her sentence. “I am Razan al-Najjar. I am here on the frontlines and I act as a human shield,” the English subtitles read. The video then cuts to text reading, “Hamas uses paramedics as human shields,” before encouraging people to share.

Debunking

However, the video turned out to be made from a heavily edited original. The first scene, which reportedly shows Najjar throwing the gas canister, clearly shows her throw it away from the people she is standing with, and nowhere near the fence. The canister falls in the grass mere meters away from the woman. She is wearing a surgical mask at the time, although it has not been confirmed that Najjar is even the woman in the video.

The next clip featured in the video, the interview with Najjar, is also not as it seems. The IDF decided to cut mid-way through the interview with Al Mayadeen, so viewers have no idea what the second half of her sentence is. The full sentence was: “I am Razan al-Najjar. I am here on the frontlines and I act as a rescuing human shield to protect the and save the wounded at the frontlines.”

Najjar was shot in the chest while she was wearing her medical uniform last Friday. A preliminary probe by the Israeli army found soldiers did not mean to fire at Najjar, and that she was not a target.

However, two weeks ago, the IDF shot 19 medical personnel in Gaza in a single day, including Moussa Abu Hassanein, who was fatally shot in the chest. Canadian doctor Tarek Loubani was among the medics who were shot that day, and he maintains they were targeted by Israeli forces.

In her interview with Al Mayadeen, Najjar also said, “With all my strength and determination and whatever risks I will continue my career and I will save all the injured, so that they return and defend our land.” Her words suggest that she had no intention of dying as a human shield.”

Israel often accuses Palestinians of partaking in ‘Pallywood,’ which they claim are fake videos and images designed to gain attention from Western media. However, Israel has been caught doing the same thing it accuses the Palestinians of, only in their case, it is an effort to minimize their crimes against Palestinians. Israel has also been found to use Palestinians as humanshields themselves.

The memorial tablet was placed on the building where the politician lived during his last years. Several dozen people attended the ceremony where the politician’s son, Anton, put the tablet on the apartment block’s wall. He also thanked “all those, who made it happen.”

The socialite-turned-politician, Ksenia Sobchak, who positions herself as a candidate “against all” in the forthcoming presidential election, earlier announced that the plaque would be installed on Friday. She was also the one who asked the Moscow mayor’s office to install the plaque in memory of the slain politician, according to a tweet by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The Moscow authorities approved the move on Wednesday, after receiving consent from the apartment block’s residents. Ksenia Sobchak was at the opening ceremony.

Nemtsov, a former governor and deputy prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin, became an opposition figure in the early 2000s. On February 27, 2015, he was killed in a drive-by shooting on a bridge near the Kremlin. The investigation put five people in prison for the murder, who were said to have shot Nemtsov out of revenge for anti-Islam statements he made after the terrorist attack on the French satirical outlet Charlie Hebdo in January 2015.

Telltale, a US video game company, appears to have used an image of the Russian ambassador slain in Turkey in its new Batman game. Twitter and video game websites noticed the similarities and slammed the developers for using the image.

The now controversial episode of ‘Batman: The Enemy Within,’ a point-and-click graphic adventure video game, was released October 3. It was published by California-based Telltale Games, an independent developer and publisher of video games.

The episode has to be purchased in order to watch it online on the Telltale website. However, MKIceAndFire, a verified user with nearly a million followers, uploaded it on YouTube.

The nearly two-hour-long episode features Batman watching security cameras, which show a body lying on the floor in the aftermath of a Gotham robbery. The image of the body on the floor bears a striking resemblance to images of slain Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov.

Karlov was shot dead as he was speaking at the opening of an exhibition called ‘Russia in the Eyes of Turks’ at an art gallery in Ankara in December 2016. The gunman was identified as 22-year-old Mevlut Altintas, a member of Ankara’s riot police.

The similarity was noticed by video game news websites, which criticized the exploitation of the image of the assassinated Russian diplomat.

Eurogamer video game website said it contacted Telltale “and asked if the photo will be removed.”

“Telltale’s use of this image is frankly one of the most disgusting ways of cutting corners I’ve ever seen during game development, as well as showing a blatant disrespect for Karlov and his family,” Attack of the Fanboy (AOTF) website, which publishes video game-related content, said.  

Twitter’s gaming community also reacted with anger to the disturbing image.

Telltale Games is famous for releasing several franchises, including: Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

“The coalition bombed schools and civilians. That’s why our children do not go to schools now. Many civilians were hurt, as it [coalition] hit both schools and hospitals,” Abu Amdjad told Alkhateb, who worked with RT Arabic last week.

The man was among many other civilians who had been forced to flee Raqqa. In their home town, not a single government building was left unscathed from the coalition airstrikes, people told the reporter, saying that the US-led coalition bombed every building, claiming that IS terrorists were hiding there.

Alkhateb reported from the Syrian city of Hama.

A fourth grader told the journalist that the coalition forces bombed his school and “deprived us of the opportunity to study.”

“There were refugees from Aleppo and other areas inside the school during the raids. Many of them died as a result of these airstrikes,” the boy said.

People from small villages in the Raqqa region also shared their suffering with Alkhateb, claiming the coalition strikes had destroyed their homes, water supplies and “burnt down hundreds of hectares of land.” Locals lost all their crops, they lamented.

Another Raqqa resident said the coalition used white phosphorus in several districts. In June, Amnesty International warned the US-led coalition against the use of white phosphorus near civilians which is against international law.

“It is obvious that all the sides who are responsible for deploying aviation, including the international coalition, all those who give orders, should very well think of the consequences of their actions. For the civilians not to be killed or forced to flee, and all the civilian infrastructure not to be destroyed,” Alkhateb said in his last report for RT Arabic.

On Sunday, the journalist was killed in a rocket attack by IS militants in Homs province. He died while filming a report on the Syrian Army’s operations against IS terrorists. His cameraman, Muutaz Yaqoub, was injured in the shelling. Several Syrian soldiers were also killed and injured in the attack.

The same day, at least six civilians were reportedly killed and 10 others injured in the US-led international coalition bombing of the city of Abu Kamal in the Syrian governorate of Deir ez-Zor, Syria’s SANA news agency reported. Women and children are reportedly among the dead, SANA said citing local sources, also claiming that the airstrikes caused serious damage to civilian infrastructure.

Last week, while demanding that the American-led coalition strikes stop, Damascus told the UN that it wants the US and its allies to pay for the destruction of Syrian infrastructure and to bear legal responsibility for “illegitimately” bombing civilian targets.

The ongoing US-led anti-terrorist airstrikes “continue to claim the lives of hundreds of innocent Syrian civilians,” the Permanent Mission of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations said in letters addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council.

A memorial for a murdered Muslim teen was set on fire at Washington’s Dupont Circle and a man was detained shortly afterward. Nabra Hassanen, 17, was killed with a baseball bat Sunday in what police controversially described as a “road rage” incident.

John Solomon, 24, of South Carolina, was arrested just after 10:00am Wednesday, US Park Police spokeswoman Sergeant Anna Rose said.

“At this time, the incident does not appear to be motivated by bias,” she said, according to the New York Daily News.

Solomon was reportedly setting several objects on fire at the park. DC Fire said they responded to the call at 8:30am and discovered what remained of Hassanen’s remembrance.

The memorial was set up at a fountain in Dupont Circle, which is on the northwest side, according to The Hill.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, was arrested and charged with Hassanen’s murder.

The killing is reportedly a result of road rage after Torres had an encounter with Hassanan and other teens on the street as they were headed to a prayer session, police said.

Torres purportedly used a metal baseball bat to kill Hassanen, according to police and witnesses.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had on June 19 issued a detainer for Torres, a citizen of El Salvador, and who is in the US illegally, according to the Daily Caller.

Torres has a girlfriend and a 4-year-old son and works in construction, according to the Washington Post.

The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office issued statements on Monday, saying the case was not being treated as a hate crime, but that the investigation is ongoing.

It’s also been confirmed that Hassanen was assaulted twice. An investigation is underway to determine if one of the cases was sexual assault, according to WTTG.

Vigils have popped up across the country, including New York, Boston and San Francisco. A memorial service is also scheduled for Wednesday in Reston, Virginia,  following her funeral, according to WTTG.
