RELATED STORIES

The following contains spoilers from both The Mandalorian Episode 7 (which Disney+ released on Dec. 18) and the newly released motion picture Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Some who watched The Mandalorian‘s penultimate Season 1 episode this week may have raised an eyebrow when the Child (aka “Baby Yoda”) employed the Force in a new and exciting way — “new,” at least, for those who have only consumed live-action Star Wars fare.

And interestingly, the same use of the Force turned up in the brand-new Star Wars film — Episode IX, The Rise of Skywalker.

On The Mandalorian, whilst camping out before approaching the town on Navarro, Mando & Co. were attacked by a flock of pterosaurs. Mando, Cara Dune and Greef Cargan’s hired guns did their best to fend off the reptilian menances, but not before Greef was gravely wounded. Greef reckoned himself a goner as the talons’ poison began coursing through his veins, until the Child sidled on up and casually laid one of his itty bitty hands on the wound. After accepting that the odd creature was not trying to eat him, Greef looked on in wonder as his wound closed up and healed. The Child, in turn, plopped down on the ground following the good deed, apparently spent by the process.

While using the Force to heal is new to live-action Star Wars properties, it has been employed in a few of the EU/”Extended Universe” novels that in recent years were admittedly deemed to no longer be any kind of canon. (I myself once dabbled in the novels — e.g. Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, Heir to the Empire — during that lonnnnng stretch between the first and second trilogies, hungry for any Star Wars content.) Force healing also apparently is a thing in some Star Wars video games, though I’m still struggling to fly a TIE fighter in Battlefront II.

Mandalorian Force HealingCut to Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters earlier this week. (Again, massive spoilers ahead! I have spoken!) Mandalorian viewers may have felt a bit “in the know” compared to those who haven’t kept up with the streaming series, when the Force was used in the same way — first, in the caverns of Pasaana, where Rey healed a grisly wound on a giant subterranean serpent and thus earned its fealty. Later, about two-third of the way into the film, Rey again used the healing power to close up the lightsaber hole she herself had just put into Kylo Ren, upon realizing that the “Ben” in him had been nudged forth, with remote help from his mother Leia.

Last but not least, for the real kicker, it appeared that Ben returned the favor in the movie’s final act, when his embrace of a lifeless Rey brought her back to life — though at the cost of any life force left in him, in the wake a brutal battle with the Knights of Ren and his tumble into a deep chasm.

If you’re a Mandalorian viewer who also has made your way to the Cineplex, were you pleased to see the Child and Rey both use the Force in this new-ish way? Did you possibly suspect it?

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Star Wars 9 ‘leaks’: Rey scene with ANAKIN Skywalker ‘like a horror movie’? Latest rumour https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-like-a-horror-movie-latest-rumour/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-like-a-horror-movie-latest-rumour/#respond Tue, 09 Apr 2019 06:02:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-like-a-horror-movie-latest-rumour/

Star Wars 9 is out in December and is widely expected to finally announce its title – and potentially drop a first teaser trailer – this Friday. Very little is currently known for sure about the film’s plot, but it has been theorised by fans that Anakin Skywalker could return as a fitting way to bookend the so-called Skywalker Saga, which spans all three trilogies. Now, this latest purported leak spills more details as to how that could happen.

Star Wars YouTuber Mike Zeroh, who has almost 160,000 subscribers, has a mixed track record with accuracy – and has already made multiple claims about how Anakin will appear or be alluded to in the next film.

So for the time being, it’s best to take this latest suggestion with the usual pinch of salt – though it certainly sounds intriguing.

In a new video, he talks of a scene that finds Rey “inside of the Lost City within the Jedi location – where it’s described that Rey begins to hear a voice that is of Anakin Skywalker.

“It’s said that Rey is inside a cave full of ancient runes.

“There is a black-cloaked figure with a hood over its head, with one blue glowing eye – said to be the hybrid Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker.

“It’s described that Rey hears a mixture of both the Jedi and the Sith Code.”

Zeroh goes on to talk of shots of Rey “heading down a set of stairs… following Anakin to the Sith location within the Lost City”, before his Force Ghost disappears.

“It almost sounds as if this is going to be a horror element within a Star Wars movie, similar to Rey going to the basement of Maz Kanata’s castle [in The Force Awakens],” Zeroh added.

The YouTuber never at any point gives any information about the positioning of his sources.

Hayden Christensen’s return is undoubtedly something that fans are keen to see, but will it happen? We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.

In the meantime, it’s been claimed that JJ Abrams will not adjust the reveal about Rey’s parents that writer-director Rian Johnson dropped in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars 9 is out on December 19.

Star Wars 9: New leak hints at Anakin Skywalker? 'Controversial MacGuffin REVEALED' https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-new-leak-hints-at-anakin-skywalker-controversial-macguffin-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-new-leak-hints-at-anakin-skywalker-controversial-macguffin-revealed/#respond Tue, 26 Mar 2019 11:10:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-new-leak-hints-at-anakin-skywalker-controversial-macguffin-revealed/

This new alleged leak, which stems from the Making Star Wars podcast Now This Is Podcasting, ties up all of those things – and also adds weight to the theory that Anakin Skywalker will be crucial in some way.

The long and short of it is that C-3PO’s wiped memories are the MacGuffin – at least to begin with.

Although the hosts stipulate that what they’ve heard has not been verified, they say: “I can’t remember if I’m supposed to talk about it – oh well, let’s do it anyway.

“One of the things going around that might answer some of the questions, maybe, is that 3PO’s memories might be a part of things.

“We were hearing that it sounded like the MacGuffin, if you will, is going to be starting off as one thing and becomes another.

“One of the things going around was that 3PO’s memories were part of it.

“Maybe they go to the Tantive IV (starship, as seen in A New Hope), dig out the fragments of 3PO’s memory from when they did the wipe using technology from50 years after, and then that leads them to something else.

“If that was the case, it would imply it is an Anakin-centric artefact, or Jedi Order.”

Rumours that Anakin Skywalker will make some kind of appearance, or at least be heavily referenced, have been bubbling under for quite some time now.

Hayden Christensen was recently announced to be appearing at Star Wars Celebration in April, which escalated excitement further – though its worth noting that he previously appeared at the event back in 2017, despite not appearing in The Last Jedi.

SWC is also when the title and teaser trailer of the new film are expected – but not confirmed – to be released.

Star Wars: Episode 9 is out on December 19, 2019.

Star Wars 9 leaks: Shock Rey scene ‘with ANAKIN Skywalker’? Rumoured Force Ghost moment https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-shock-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-rumoured-force-ghost-moment/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-shock-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-rumoured-force-ghost-moment/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 21:45:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leaks-shock-rey-scene-with-anakin-skywalker-rumoured-force-ghost-moment/

Alleged details have emerged online suggesting there will be a very brief nod to the lead character of the prequel trilogy in the upcoming film. Star Wars 9 is due out at the end of the year and, throughout the filming process, a barrage of so-called leaks have emerged on the internet – all of which need to be taken with a pinch of salt pending any official info from Lucasfilm. Is this new scene legitimate?

Details come courtesy of prolific YouTuber Mike Zeroh, who has 152,000 subscribers and posts large volumes of videos claiming to be Star Wars leaks.

Zeroh’s track record is decidedly hit-and-miss when it comes to scoops that prove to be the real deal – so is this one that will come to fruition? Best to treat it as pure speculation for the time being.

He describes a scene between “R2-D2, Rey and Anakin Skywalker”, in which “Rey is meditating on a large boulder with her legs crossed and her eyes closed.

“It’s described as a dark environment with a camp fire going on in the background.”

He adds: “The next [shot] goes over Rey, surrounded by pieces of Anakin’s lightsaber floating around her – two pieces of the blue crystal.

“Rey hears voices of Anakin Skywalker – faint words and whispers from the character.

“Another [shot] goes over the front of Rey with a mysterious hooded figure behind her.

“By the time Rey turns around, the figure has vanished.

“A shadow of Anakin’s apparition, it’s described that Rey and Anakin have a strange connection.”

Most of the rumours concerning Anakin’s return have come via fan speculation online, and concrete evidence has been decidedly sparse.

But with Episode 9 set to be the concluding part of the sequel trilogy – and in fact the entire nine-part Skywalker saga – could JJ Abrams be planning on paying special homage to one of its most iconic characters?

We’ll get our answers when Star Wars 9 hits cinemas in December 2019.

In the meantime, the wait continues for a teaser trailer and the film’s official title.

Pre-‘Force Awakens’ Luke Skywalker Art Reveals ‘The Last Jedi’ Story Was Always Going to Happen https://briefnews.eu/pre-force-awakens-luke-skywalker-art-reveals-the-last-jedi-story-was-always-going-to-happen/ https://briefnews.eu/pre-force-awakens-luke-skywalker-art-reveals-the-last-jedi-story-was-always-going-to-happen/#respond Tue, 27 Nov 2018 20:48:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pre-force-awakens-luke-skywalker-art-reveals-the-last-jedi-story-was-always-going-to-happen/ force awakens concept art

Not to open up a can of worms, but one of the major complaints regarding Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the way the film handled Luke Skywalker’s story arc. Several fans were outraged that Luke would be hiding out on an island, ignoring his friends. The blame fell squarely on Rian Johnson, with many accusing him of not understanding Luke as a character. But here’s a twist: newly surfaced concept art created before both The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens proves that this was the direction Luke’s story was heading all along. In fact, it might have even had a darker twist.

Artist Christian Alzmann took to Instagram to share some very early Force Awakens art. We’re talking really early – before the film was even called The Force Awakens. This was created in 2013, a year after George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney. Disney was ramping up to relaunch the series based on some of Lucas’ ideas, but they still hadn’t hired J.J. Abrams, and they definitely hadn’t hired Rian Johnson at this point.

This is worth noting, because in Alzmann’s description of the image, he writes:

My first image I made for Star Wars : The Force Awakens. This was January of 2013. Luke was being described as a Col. Kurtz type hiding from the world in a cave. I couldn’t believe I was getting to make this image and I got a George “Fabulouso” on it to boot.

This flat-out confirms that George Lucas’ early treatment for more films involved Luke hiding out in cave. Eventually, Lucas’ ideas were scrapped, but it’s highly likely Rian Johnson heard about them at some point and incorporated them into The Last Jedi. Another interesting tidbit here: Alzmann says that early descriptions of Luke had him as a “Col. Kurtz type.” Kurtz is one of the main characters in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, and if you’ve seen the movie you know that Kurtz is insane. He’s gone crazy – so crazy that the military sends a man to track him down and kill him. That’s a hell of a lot darker than what ended up in The Last Jedi, where Luke isn’t evil or crazy – he just wants to be left alone.

Beyond all this, the art provides us of how Luke could’ve looked had this path been taken. The topknot on his head is a nice touch, calling back to Star Wars‘ samurai movie influences. And he also bears more than a passing resemblance to his old mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The bottom line here, though, is this: if you flat-out hate the storyline about Luke abandoning his friends and family and hiding out somewhere, don’t blame Rian Johnson.

Star Wars 9 LEAK? ‘Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker lightsaber duel flashback’ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-darth-vader-and-luke-skywalker-lightsaber-duel-flashback/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-darth-vader-and-luke-skywalker-lightsaber-duel-flashback/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 00:15:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-darth-vader-and-luke-skywalker-lightsaber-duel-flashback/

The sequel to The Last Jedi is currently shooting, but very little is known of how the last episode of the entire Skywalker saga will go.

Nevertheless alleged leaks and rumours keep sprouting up and the latest concerns a Darth Vader cameo during a flashback duel with Luke Skywalker.

theorist Mike Zeroh – who claims he has sources – give details, but the following should be taken with a grain of salt since it’s all unconfirmed.

In his video, he says the scene sees: “Specifically both Kylo Ren and Rey walking on a catwalk inside the interior of some cave.”

He continued: “In front of them are two figures in a lightsaber duel.

“It’s Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

“However this is no duel seen in the films.

“We see Darth Vader’s red lightsaber clashing with Luke’s blue one.”

Zeroh added: “However Luke is in his ceremonial outfit, as seen at the end of Star Wars A New Hope.”

“This to me sounds like it comes directly from the comic book called Vader Down.”

Star Wars fans may be familiar with the comic, which includes a brief lightsaber duel between the father and son.

However it takes place between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

Star Wars 9 leak: Luke Skywalker TWO new scenes revealed after Last Jedi backlash https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-luke-skywalker-two-new-scenes-revealed-after-last-jedi-backlash/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-luke-skywalker-two-new-scenes-revealed-after-last-jedi-backlash/#respond Mon, 06 Aug 2018 05:15:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-leak-luke-skywalker-two-new-scenes-revealed-after-last-jedi-backlash/

Fans want more Luke Skywalker.

Whether they are happy with Episode 8 or part of the vocal backlash furious with Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy’s vision, everybody wants to see Luke back in the final movie.

It is, after all, the grand climax to the Skywalker saga, which has spanned five decades at the cinema, nine movies and numerous books, comicbooks and animated television episodes.

So it is good news that Hamill will be back in his Jedi robes for new scenes.

After Hamill posted pictures of a new clean-shaven look many feared he had moved on from the franchise after his character’s controversial death.

However, according to the latest reports, he will be back filming at Pinewood in September, which gives plenty of time for facial hair.

But what will he be filming? New leaks describe two sets and that Hamill will be shooting with two of the next generation Star Wars leads, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver.

Will he be a Force ghost or will it be flashbacks?

Star Wars commentator Mike Zeroh said: “All three cast members will be filming this September. The shoot will last three days at Pinewood. The set will have many green screens. Which could tell us this is how they will make Mark Hamill into Force Ghost.

“There are two sets being constructed right now. This may well indicate that Luke will appear as a Force ghost to Kylo Ren and Rey separately. This could mean that he is filming with Adam Driver on one set and with Daisy Ridley on the other set.”

But what are the actual scenes?

Previous Star Wars 9  disembarking from a spaceship with their son. This almost certainly sounds like the moment Ben Solo was left in Luke’s care at his Jedi academy.

Will Hamill and Driver be filming further scenes showing how the Luke and Ben relationship was destroyed? Or will Luke be shown as a ghost trying to turn Kylo back from the Dark Side?

Similarly, the Daisy Ridley scenes could be flashbacks to Luke training Rey, which seems rather redundant. Or it could be Luke’s ghost trying to help his young almost-apprentice master her owers ad face her destiny.

Star Wars 9: BIG hint at Luke Skywalker return? Mark Hamill to film NEW scenes? https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-big-hint-at-luke-skywalker-return-mark-hamill-to-film-new-scenes/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-big-hint-at-luke-skywalker-return-mark-hamill-to-film-new-scenes/#respond Fri, 06 Jul 2018 11:09:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-big-hint-at-luke-skywalker-return-mark-hamill-to-film-new-scenes/

Hamill played the character in five Star Wars movies; the original trilogy, The Force Awakens (albeit briefly) and The Last Jedi.

However he appeared to die peacefully at the end of the latter, with many assuming he would not be seen again.

But with Force Ghosts an established part of the franchise, could he still make an appearance?

Hamill took to Instagram and Twitter with a countdown image, declaring there to be 532 days until Episode 9 is out.

He captioned it: “Who’s counting? #9WillBeFineAllInGoodTime.”

John Boyega posted the same image to his own Instagram feed, sparking speculation among fans that some announcements could be imminent.

One person posted on a Reddit discussion on the topic: “I mean, this is pretty much confirmation Mark’s involved, right? There was no real doubt, especially with JJ [Abrams], but it’s nice to know that people aren’t gonna be let down.”

Another said: “He had his beard at the Solo premier. He hates the beard and only keeps it for filming.”

Asked recently by Collider if Luke will be seen one final time, Hamill seemed coy.

“I don’t know,” he maintained. “I’m the last to know.”

But hinting that a “surprise” is possible, he said: “I like it that way… I like surprises….

“When I know something, I’ll let you know.”

The actor had also recently hinted that his enthusiasm for Star Wars appearances has waned since the death of Carrie Fisher and departure of Harrison Ford.

“It [Fisher’s death] really has tarnished my ability to enjoy it to its fullest,” he told ABC News.

“You were asking earlier, ‘are you gonna be back’… I don’t care anymore on that level. Because Han Solo is gone, Luke is gone.

“You just can’t get the band back together the way you wanted it to be, and it shouldn’t be that way. It is what it is.”

Star Wars: Episode 9 is out on December 20, 2019.

Star Wars 9: Luke Skywalker is ALIVE? Mark Hamill hints at RETURN in trilogy finale https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-luke-skywalker-is-alive-mark-hamill-hints-at-return-in-trilogy-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-luke-skywalker-is-alive-mark-hamill-hints-at-return-in-trilogy-finale/#respond Sat, 17 Mar 2018 09:37:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-luke-skywalker-is-alive-mark-hamill-hints-at-return-in-trilogy-finale/

The current trilogy will wrap up with the concluding instalment in 2019, with production beginning over the summer.

Skywalker was seen peacefully dying at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi last year, but now Hamill has quipped on Twitter that he could return after all – although it seems he was only kidding.

Responding to an article about Sebastian Stan being his pick for a young Skywalker, should a spin-off ever be made, he wrote: “Who says I’m not a fan of Sebastian? I want someone to cast us as father & son!”

When someone replied: “but didn’t they just kill luke skywalker?”, he joked: “Only JJ knows for sure.”

JJ Abrams, of course, is the director who will helm Episode 9, having taken over the reigns from Colin Trevorrow – who departed the project last year.

Yesterday it was alleged that Trevorrow could have wanted Skywalker to stay alive, whereas Abrams and Rian Johnson were keen for him to be sidelined; making way for new character such as Finn, Rey, Poe and Kylo Ren to shine.

Little is known about the next movie, but last week Daisy Ridley (Rey) was quoted as hinting that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is still not completely beyond redemption.

Speaking in a Facebook Live video for the official Star Wars page, she disagreed that her character’s hopeful nature is to her detriment.

“I don’t think so, because I think he [Kylo] is redeemable,” she insisted. “There is a moment where is redeemable.”

Referring to the shock death of Snoke (Andy Serkis), she went on: “He does the right thing for a moment even though the right thing is a terrible thing in the grand scheme of things – to kill another person.

“He does the right thing just then in order to help her – and I’m not saying what he does is right, but he does think what he’s doing is the right thing. He’s not like, ‘oh, I’m so evil.’”

Mystery Solved: Here’s Why Luke Skywalker Changed Clothes in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ https://briefnews.eu/mystery-solved-heres-why-luke-skywalker-changed-clothes-in-star-wars-the-last-jedi/ https://briefnews.eu/mystery-solved-heres-why-luke-skywalker-changed-clothes-in-star-wars-the-last-jedi/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 20:32:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mystery-solved-heres-why-luke-skywalker-changed-clothes-in-star-wars-the-last-jedi/ The Last Jedi costume change

When writer/director Rian Johnson began writing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he was handed a pretty serious cliffhanger to resolve: Rey standing on an Ahch-To cliffside, offering a beige-and-white-clad Luke Skywalker his father’s lightsaber. The Last Jedi‘s opening scene picks up where The Force Awakens‘ left off, and after unceremoniously tossing the saber over his shoulder, Skywalker immediately changes out of his light colored robes and into darker garb.

Luke’s darker robes better represent the character’s internal struggle, but now we know there’s an actual story reason for his new look. Read on to discover the reason behind Skywalker’s The Last Jedi costume change.

Why Did Luke Skywalker Change Clothes?

I must admit, I barely registered that one of the first things Luke does after Rey meets him is change his clothes. I guess I was just so caught up in the story that I didn’t give it a second thought. But now that I think about it, I suppose it is a little odd – so what gives?

ScreenRant explains that the reasoning can be found in author Jason Fry‘s novelization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It turns out that Luke’s lighter robes are part of the ceremonial attire associated with the burning of the ancient Jedi tree. That means that just before Rey arrived, Luke was considering setting the tree ablaze – but as we saw later in the movie (when he was wearing those lighter robes again), he was so conflicted about what that would mean that he couldn’t bring himself to do it.

What’s With the Hesitation?

Skywalker spends most of the movie railing against the old ways of the Jedi, but when the time comes to set the ancient tree on fire, he hesitates. Why? According to the novelization, Luke reflects back on his decades traveling the galaxy collecting Jedi artifacts, all of which are inside the tree: burning it down means not only symbolically destroying the religion to which he subscribed, it’s also literally setting his entire legacy on fire. I haven’t read the novelization myself yet, but ScreenRant says it’s clear that Luke “had actually made a few failed attempts to burn the Jedi library” – including one that’s interrupted when Rey arrives.

In all likelihood, Johnson just wanted Luke to be wearing a costume that better reflected the character’s inner turmoil than what J.J. Abrams left him in. And as we saw elsewhere in the film – most notably with the destruction of Kylo Ren’s mask – it’s clear Johnson had no scruples about jumping right in and immediately telling the story he wanted to tell. That’s what he was hired to do, after all. But it’s always amusing to learn about the canonical explanations for some of these seemingly small issues that occasionally pop up in Star Wars movies.
