You may have invested in a paper or digital planner to keep track of everything, or a journal to note down your thoughts and ideas. You may have Post It notes on your desk or attached to your fridge or used an online project management tool such as Asana or Trello.

The thing is, we know what we want to do and resolve to do it but then life gets in the way and our initial excitement and commitment falls down.

In this article, I will help you focus on what matters despite the constant changes in life by knowing how to bullet journal.

How starting to journal changed my life

Now, I love using a planner and a journal and making notes of all my thoughts, ideas, goals and dreams. I’ve written about the power of taking notes and how to make it a habit.

Actually writing things down gives me a lot more focus and clarity. It increases self-awareness and allows me to truly reflect on everything that’s happening both internally and externally.

It has become an important habit in my life. I have found I’m more grateful because I capture what matters, remember things more clearly and have become quite creative in how I lay out the most important things.

The habit of updating my journal daily has become the catalyst for creating a successful life and kick starting my morning routine.

I start with exercise, whether that’s yoga or a run, then wind down by writing in my journal, capturing my thoughts or simply laying out my plans for the day.

Have you noticed in your own life how introducing one new positive habit can change other things in your life, for the better?

For me, that is journaling, and it has changed me on the inside as well as made me far more organised and productive. I am far more creative and organised because of my journaling.

Why does it seem difficult to take up journaling?

Journaling takes commitment. For many people, they have tried journaling several times and it hasn’t worked for them.

They may do it for a week and then get bored and try something else.

One of the problems people experience is that they’re trying to use too many tools to manage and plan their life.

You may be using a calendar to lay out your appointments, important dates and sometimes your daily tasks.

In addition, you may use a daily, weekly or monthly planner to lay out your goals, action plans and work and personal tasks. This may be through a digital app or paper planner.

You may have a vision board to map out your dreams, goals and aspirations.

You may also use Post It notes to remember important things that could be put up at both work and in your home.

With information captured on a variety of different devices sometimes, it can be difficult to really organize your life effectively.

To-Do lists can get lost and Post It notes can easily get thrown in the bin.

Discovering the bullet journal

Recently, I started looking for something that could capture everything in one place. My research led me to the bullet journal.

If you search Instagram or Pinterest or put in a google search for bullet journal you will be met with an abundance of neatly designed notebook pages designed to map out and organise your life or creatively designed ‘spreads’ full of colour coded notes and pictures that capture everything from life goals to inspirational quotes to your ‘Year At A Glance.’

What I’ve learned is that bullet journals can be an amazing productivity tool and life manager if you make it your own and learn to use it in a way that fits into your life.

Why bullet journal is good for you

Essentially, it is just a simple notebook that allows you to include a huge variety of current and future planning techniques.

According to Founder Ryder Carroll it is a system to help you “Track the past, organize the present and plan for the future.”

“The Bullet Journal is a customisable and forgiving organisational system. It can be your to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, and diary, but most likely, it will be all of the above. It will teach you to do more with less.” – Ryder Carroll

The bullet journal is great for people who:

  • Want to get more organised
  • Like pen and paper to-do lists, planners and journals
  • Have lots of thoughts and tasks floating around but not written down
  • Love goal setting and tracking results and habits
  • Love planners
  • Are struggling to keep up with the habits of journaling or updating their planners
  • Want to plan their life more effectively
  • Want a place of self-expression and self-awareness

The notebook you choose for your bullet journal can be simple, with blank, lined or a dot grid pages.

You can use it to create yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly or daily calendars and to-do lists.

It can be used as a diary, vision board, brainstorming notepad or whatever you choose to use it for.

You can build out pages to create collections of the things that are important to you – inspiring quotes, bucket list, life goals, books to read, self-expression, personal and career wins as well as a place to express gratitude.

It is also a place you can use to keep track of everything that’s happening with you right now as well as goals for the future.

The key thing about the bullet journal is that it is a place to make your own – to capture what matters in a way that fits the way your brain and creative side works.

How to set up your bullet journal

Here’s a simple guide for setting up your bullet journal:

Lay out your index

This should ideally be on Page 2 of your bullet journal. This is where all of your plans and collections get organised and refer back to the specific page number.

For example, September may be on Page 6. Only Index the things that are important to you and that you want to refer back to.

I will have an Index that Includes plans per month, big goals, weekly schedules, gratitude log, inspiring quotes etc.

I show the start and end page number for each item, but adapt it to what works for you.

The key

It’s suggested that you keep a key at the front or back of your bullet journal to track what all the symbols mean.

There is far more information on symbols to use in your bullet journal in the video I link to below.

The future log

This is essentially how you lay out priorities, events and appointment for the months ahead.

This can be 12 months ahead or 6 months ahead. I personally prefer to go 6 months ahead and have this across two pages, 3 months on each page.

I will usually have 8-10 items per month listed here.

Monthly log

The monthly log keeps track of all your current priorities, events and appointments across the month.

The aim here is simplicity and to write succinct notes. Some people will write the date and day down the left hand side of the page for every day in the month.

Others will create boxes for each day to fill in and complete. Once you decide on which works for you, add in the actual event, task or project.

The aim here is to start the next month at the end of the existing month, rather than at the start of the month. As the month unfolds you can update and add to it.

Daily log

You can fill your day with all of the tasks, events, appointments and other notes, listed under the day’s date.

For many, this is where the bullet journal is exciting as you can use the method of rapid logging and use the symbols (from the key).

Once a task is complete, it gets crossed off with a simple x.

17 Tips to start using bullet journal

Now we’ve touched on a brief overview of how the bullet journal works, let’s just into 17 tips that you can use to get up and running with your own bullet journal today.

1. Define your purpose

Be crystal clear on your objective for using the bullet journal. The core aim of the journal is to increase productivity but is that your main reason for using it?

Is it to bring together all of your notes, ideas and to-do’s in one place? Do you want to bring together your personal and business goals in one place and track your progress? Do you want to be more mindful about your day? Do better at remembering things?

If you know what is motivating, you then you have a better chance of really making it work for you.

2. Start at the source

The video below is from bullet journal founder Ryder Carroll runs through the conventions of how the bullet journal works. Spend a bit of time watching the video to know more about it:

You can also visit the Bullet Journal website as they do a great job of breaking everything down.

3. Keep it simple to start with

You can buy a simple notebook or invest in something like a Moleskin or Leuchtturm 1917 A5 Dotted Notebook.

Many people start with a simple pen or pencil to get going, while others invest a little bit upfront and buy things like artist pens, midliners and fineliner pens and washi tape.

Now you have your notebook, the next step is to number each of the individual pages.

Whatever feels comfortable at the beginning, go with.

4. Join a bullet journal group or community

When you’re just getting started, it’s a great idea to find a friend, family member or colleague to start the journey with you.

You can learn together, help each other out, hold each other accountable to keep going and inspire each other.

There are also some great Bullet Journal groups to join to where you can seek out help and inspiration.

Bullet Journal Junkies and Bullet Journal Society are both large groups and there is also Boho Berry’s Tribe Facebook Group.

5. Customize to your needs

Be clear why you are using the bullet journal and customize it to suit the outcomes you’re looking for.

You can divide up months, weeks and days exactly how you want them based on your objectives.

If you have specific things you want to keep in one place e.g. a vision board or bucket list, you can carve out space for that.

If you want to track specific habits such as how many hours you’re sleeping per night or when you’re exercising you can track that as well.

You can spend as much or as little as you want on the planner. You can keep it simple or be a bit more creative and use coloured gel pens, highlighters or washi tape to suit your style.

When you’re starting out you can keep it really simple with a basic notebook and pen or pencil.

6. Create spreads that are important to you

There are specific things – Index, Keys, Future Logs, Monthlies, Weeklies, Dailies, Collections etc. that will make up a lot of the pages of your bullet journal.

However, the key is to create something that fits around what is most important to you.

If you have a head full of ideas and you need somewhere to get them down on paper create an ‘Ideas’ page or have that page sit next to your daily page.

7. Review quarterly

When I coach private clients, we always set 90 day goals and then review performance on an ongoing basis.

One of the keys here is that the goal stays but the path to achieving the goal can be fluid.

The same is true of your bullet journal. Sit down every quarter and review what’s working – what things do you love to do and what things aren’t going so well.

Think about how you can expand the great and remove the bad to keep momentum and fascination with your bullet journal growing.

8. Plan in advance

As with everything planning in advance will save you time in the long run and will reduce the chance of overwhelm, especially when you are starting out.

Plan your weekly or daily spreads in advance (I personally do my weekly on Sunday night). You will then have a clear picture of your upcoming week but still have time to add things in during the week.

9. Set up your layouts

There are two main layouts that almost everyone will use.

These are the monthly spreads, which give you a clear overview of the month ahead. This is very calendar style with each day in big blocks next to each other. You may, as you progress, choose to doodle and colour theme these months.

The next one is the weekly spread, where you lay out your week, typically on two pages and complete as you would a diary.

You may be more comfortable with horizontal layouts but it can be fun to experiment with vertical listing of each day of the month.

The key thing is what you are recording. It’s not style over substance.

10. Try new things (And stop what doesn’t work)

You may start out using the traditional Ryder Carroll method or follow a method being used by one of your friends at the beginning.

The key here is to find your own style, one that works for you. If things aren’t clicking, then stop and find something that does.

This may become a mix of traditional planning mixed with more creative collections and trackers.

Some people enjoy listing out the days of the month 1-31 down the side of a page whilst others prefer something different.

Find the best organisation and planning system to suit you.

11. Start with one collection

The bullet journal, at its core, is a productivity system so it’s essential to begin future planning and life management with monthly spreads, weekly spreads, habit trackers and dailies.

It is also a place to house your big ideas, a place for self-discovery and self-awareness and a home to your dreams and goals.

A collection is simply a gathering together of things that are important to you under a simple heading.

This could be a bucket list of places to visit, a gratitude log, a list of books to read or podcasts to listen to, inspirational quotes, exercise regime, goals and dreams.

Start with one. Have fun with it and go from there.

12. Create a habit tracker

Having a habit tracker forces you to be honest with yourself and can inspire you to reach specific goals you may have.

Many bullet journallers credit tracking with helping to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

You can track whatever is important to you right now. So, on a spread, list out all the habits you want to track on the left hand side.

This could be related to sleep, exercise, running, blogging, meditation, journaling, whatever you want.

At the top list all of the days in the month 1-31. Then for each individual day, against each habit, colour in whether you ‘completed’ that habit.

At the end of the month you can see how you are tracking against the habits you wanted to improve. If you have missed a few against say getting 8 hours of sleep per night, look at ways that can improve next month.

13. Create a habit

To ensure that the excitement of starting your bullet journal doesn’t wear off after a week or so, commit to working on jour journal for a specific amount of time every day.

If tasks that you’ve entered haven’t been marked as complete or your collections aren’t updated regularly you’ll get bored quickly.

It’s also important to set your weekly pages up in advance so you are ahead of the curve.

If you develop a daily habit and enjoy the experience of updating your bullet journal, you will develop your own personal rhythm that will help you organise your time more effectively.

14. Don’t compare

Instagram and Pinterest are full of amazing images of other people’s journals so it’s important to remember that your journal is unique to you.

You will develop your own style along the way so don’t compare yourself to others. Motivation may drop and you may begin to ‘copy’ the style of others.

The important thing to refer back to is why you wanted a bullet journal in the first place. If the aim is to be able to plan more effectively, be more organized and productive, then that’s all that matters if it works for you.

Seeing other planners and procrastinating will stop you from simply just getting started.

15. Don’t overdo it

Start small and build from there. Ease into using your bullet journal and get to know what works for you.

Overloading yourself at the beginning with lots of collections, daily trackers and fully illustrated vision boards may lead you to abandon the bullet journal completely.

16. Give it time (And don’t be a perfectionist)

If you’re not used to using a planner or a journal, give yourself a good month to really get into it.

Don’t stress about your artistic abilities. It should be functional over beautiful every time.

If you’re worried about making mistakes at the beginning, you can simply use a pencil or an erasable pen.

17. Include fun stuff as well

To keep motivated and inspired, use the bullet journal holistically to cover both work and home life.

Include things like memories, motivations, goals, exercise, gratitude and dreams will balance out the daily, weekly and monthly work plans.

One of the great things about the bullet journal is that it should encompass your whole life and give you important events and achievements to look back on.

Fuel costs SKYROCKET: May saw worst monthly rise in average price of petrol in 18 years https://briefnews.eu/fuel-costs-skyrocket-may-saw-worst-monthly-rise-in-average-price-of-petrol-in-18-years/ https://briefnews.eu/fuel-costs-skyrocket-may-saw-worst-monthly-rise-in-average-price-of-petrol-in-18-years/#respond Tue, 05 Jun 2018 15:12:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fuel-costs-skyrocket-may-saw-worst-monthly-rise-in-average-price-of-petrol-in-18-years/

Fuel prices in the UK have hit the worst mostly rise in at least 18 years, reveals RAC Fuel Watch data.

Unleaded petrol increased from 123.43p to 129.41p, which saw the cost of filling up a 55-litre car to £71.38 – an increase of just £3.29 in one month.

endured a greater rise in cost of 6.12p in one month from 126.7p to 132.39p. It will now cost £3.37 more to fill up a 55-litre family car at £72.81.

This was the second worst rise in diesel since the 6.43p increase in May 2008 of between 120.83p to 129.26p.

RAC Fuel Watch data reveals that the average prices of both petrol and diesel have increased since 22 April, adding 8p a litre in the process.

In May the big four supermarkets raised petrol by 5.49p a litre and diesel by 5.88p while on the motorway, service stations added 6.37p to unleaded, taking it to 144.75p a litre, and 6.69p to diesel making it an eye-watering 147.80p a litre – 15p a litre above average UK prices for both fuels.

The forecourt increases have been driven by a jump in the price of oil, coupled with a weakening of the pound against the dollar.

Oil broke through the $ 80 a barrel mark twice in May – something which has not been seen for three and a half years (since 12 November 2014).

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “May was a hellish month for motorists.

“Sadly, they have been besieged by pump price rises for three months with nearly 9p a litre being added to petrol since the beginning of March.

“The rising oil price together with a weaker pound is a punitive combination for anyone that drives regularly.

“For many people there is little alternative to the car for the majority of journeys they have to make so it is therefore very difficult to avoid feeling the pinch of rising pump prices.

“In the last week of May the oil price cooled a little to $ 76 a barrel which is slightly better news for motorists as the RAC’s two-week forecast is currently showing that average prices may even reduce by a penny or so.

“While this isn’t much, and could easily change in response to oil trading this week, it is at least a sign that the constant rise in forecourt prices may have stopped for the time being.

“Looking at the bigger picture, there is talk that OPEC – the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries – may agree at its meeting on 22 June in Vienna to change its tack of restricting oil supply.

“The group, together with Russia, have been limiting production with a view to removing the long-term oil glut. This strategy has been successful and, as intended, caused the barrel price to rise.

“If a decision is taken to increase supply it may provide some much-needed relief for motorists at the pumps in the UK.”

Car insurance premiums set to SKYROCKET to record high in 2018 https://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-premiums-set-to-skyrocket-to-record-high-in-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-premiums-set-to-skyrocket-to-record-high-in-2018/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 14:56:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-premiums-set-to-skyrocket-to-record-high-in-2018/

Car insurance premium costsGETTY

Car inusrance premiums expected to skyrocket to £900 on average in 2018

Car insurance premiums are expected to hit a record high in 2018 with average prices expected to reach £900.

Currently drivers are paying £827 on average, according to Confused.com’s latest car insurance price index (Q4 2017), powered by Willis Towers Watson, which is an increase of eight per cent since 2016 – around £60 more.

In December 2017 of £3 (0.4 per cent), on top of fuel costs rising by 0.5p for petrol and 0.7p for diesel over the past week.

One problem for drivers is that auto-renewing their policy and staying loyal to one insurer won’t necessarily make the premium cheaper.

In fact, last year it was revealed that drivers who auto-renew their premium are missing out on almost £300 of savings by swapping insurer.

Premiums are set to reach their most expensive levels ever by the end of 2018 and are just £31 short of the highest average price in 2011 (Q2, £858)

This is in part due to the consistent increase of car insurance premiums over the past two years.

Over this period of time, average premiums have risen by 23 per cent in the UK.

Despite the EU gender directive, which prohibits insurers from assessing a driver’s risk based on their gender, male motorists are still paying more on average then female drivers.

It looks like the average cost of car insurance is going to be over £900 in 2018

Louise O’Shea, CEO at Confused

Male drivers are edging closer to the £900 mark and are paying £878 on average for their car insurance – £114 more than female motorists who are paying £764 on average

Since the directive was introduced five years ago the gap between premium costs of men and women have narrowed in certain age brackets.

Before the legislation was introduced 17-20 year old male drivers were paying up to £1,787 more than female drivers of the same age (Q1 2011).

This gap has, however, now been reduced by 40 per cent to £711 (£2,529 vs £1,818).

The EU directive has conversely had a negative affect on male driver aged between 41-45 years old, who were paying £7 less than women five years ago and are now paying £97 more.

It is still young drivers bearing the brunt of the high premiums with drivers aged between 17-19 paying over £2,000 on average.

Despite younger drivers still forking out the highest premiums, it is drivers over 60 that faced the largest percentage rise by 13 per cent year-on-year.

Louise O’Shea, CEO at Confused.com, says: “It looks like the average cost of car insurance is going to be over £900 in 2018 – the highest ever!

Male driverGETTY

Male drivers on average are still paying more than women for insurance cover

“The good news is that insurers now have to show us what we paid for car insurance last year.

“Therefore, it’s never been easier for drivers to check what they paid then and compare it to what they are asking you to pay now.

“January is always a difficult month after the excess of Christmas and that is true for drivers’ wallets too.

“The team and I at Confused.com want to help, and are guaranteeing to beat the price your insurer is charging you.

“Please take a few minutes to check your letter and get a new price from Confused.com.

“We could easily save you almost £300. A much better start to 2018!”

Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert: Premium bond rates SKYROCKET – should YOU invest? https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-money-saving-expert-premium-bond-rates-skyrocket-should-you-invest/ https://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-money-saving-expert-premium-bond-rates-skyrocket-should-you-invest/#respond Tue, 28 Nov 2017 08:06:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/martin-lewis-money-saving-expert-premium-bond-rates-skyrocket-should-you-invest/

Premium bonds are a way that Britons can invest their money to potentially make some cash – but are they better than a standard savings account?

NS&I, who run the premium bonds draw, claim investors have a chance every month to win a £1 million jackpot if they invest £100 or more.

As NS&I is ran by the government money is also 100 per cent secure in premium bonds – but does Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis recommend them?

Martin believes that more most Britons, a savings account with a high interest rate will provide better yields overall.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis revealed whether everyone with savings should pile in on premium bonds, since the rate is set to rise on Friday.

NS&I Premium bonds are a savings account with your interest dictated by a random monthly prize draw. The maximum you can put in is £50,000 and each £1 you have is entered in the draw where you can win anything from £25 to £1million.

Martin said: “The odds of winning a prize with each £1 per draw will be increasing from 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 24,000 with the rate change.”

Should you invest in premium bonds?

Martin said: “On Friday, the prize fund rate is going up, but most won’t even get this. The rate is just a vague watermark showing that the total payout is 1.4 per cent of all the cash in them. It doesn’t mean put £100 in bonds and you’re likely to win £1.40.

“That’s impossible, as the smallest prize is £25. In fact 19 of every 20 people with £100 in will win nothing – for the other person to get £25.”

Martin explained that smaller savers are likely to lose out, where as if you save close to £50,000 in the bonds you are more likely to win.

He also revealed that the tax free bonus that applies to premium bonds only really benefit those in the top 1 per cent of earners.

So, can you improve your chances of winning?

Martin said: “There are many myths about how to improve your odds of winning on the Premium Bonds – all are nonsense. Each £1 bond has exactly the same chance of winning as every other. Though many of the myths derive from an obvious route.

“A hundred bonds bought now have exactly the same chance as 100 bonds bought in 1957, soon after Premium Bonds were launched.”

So what should you do?

Martin said: “What people love about premium bonds is the excitement of opening ‘you’ve won’ letters or emails. And many with larger amounts rejoice with joyous declarations such as ‘I win £25 every few months – it’s fantastic!’ That’s a dangerous psychology – with a decent amount in them, you’re likely to win monthly. Do the maths and work out what you actually win annually. Then compare this to top savings where the ‘winnings’ are guaranteed.

“If you have average luck, and small savings then mathematically Premium Bonds are still a bad bet even at the new higher rate.Smaller savers would need to be extremely lucky to beat the 1.31% you can get in the top easy-access savings account, and even then fewer than half of those with the full £50,000 saved would be likely to match or beat it.

“And as many leave money sitting in Premium Bonds for years, if you’re willing to lock money away, the top one-year fix pays 1.95% guaranteed. Even with £50,000 saved, fewer than 10% of people (who don’t pay tax on savings) will match or beat this with Premium Bonds.

“Yet, if normal savings only give you a marginal gain over Premium Bonds, and you value the thrill and that infinitesimally small chance of winning a million, it’s not too bad to stick with them. And certainly for  the few who have big savings and pay tax on them then they’re a virtual dead-cert must-do.”

Martin recently revealed the setting your thermostat on a certain setting to save money.

Many homeowners during winter time are tempted to turn their thermostats to the highest setting possible in order to keep cold drafts at bay.

Others suggest keeping the heating on for long periods of time set on a low heat can save you money.

Store credit card applications skyrocket around Black Friday — but the discounts they offer come with a catch https://briefnews.eu/store-credit-card-applications-skyrocket-around-black-friday-but-the-discounts-they-offer-come-with-a-catch/ https://briefnews.eu/store-credit-card-applications-skyrocket-around-black-friday-but-the-discounts-they-offer-come-with-a-catch/#respond Sun, 22 Oct 2017 07:16:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/store-credit-card-applications-skyrocket-around-black-friday-but-the-discounts-they-offer-come-with-a-catch/ shopping teenagers retailThomas Lohnes/Getty Images for RESERVED

  • Many retailers lure customers with store credit cards during the holidays, which offer discounts in exchange for loyalty.
  • But interest rates on retail credit cards have risen to almost 25%, or more than 10% higher than general-use credit cards.
  • If you carry a balance, it’s not a good financial move to sign up for one.

For a frequent shopper, nothing is better than a good discount.

Thankfully, shoppers no longer have to wait around for bargain holidays like Black Friday or Cyber Monday to get their fix.

Stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom have begun offering deals year-round to combat the retail apocalypse. One way they’re luring customers is through store credit cards and accompanying loyalty programs. In the US, consumers hold an average of 1.51 retail cards, according to Experian’s annual State of Credit analysis.

The most popular time for sign-ups is during the holidays. In fact, discount retailers, online stores, and jewelry stores nearly double their sign-ups in the month of December.

But while the initial offer can seem enticing — nearly two-thirds of the store cards recently surveyed by CreditCards.com offered same-day, percentage-off discounts at sign-up — it’s not always a good financial move.

Interest rates on the average retail card have risen for the third straight year to 24.99% compared to the average general-use credit card APR of 16.15%, according to CreditCards.com.

“When you sign up for a store credit card, you’re also signing up for frequent nudges to buy, buy, buy, which means you’re often spending more than you would normally,” financial planner Sophia Bera, wrote in an article for Business Insider.

That means your loyalty can come at a steep cost if you don’t pay off your balance in full. The average retail cardholder has an outstanding balance of $ 1,081, according to Experian.

“The reason the interest rates are higher [than general-use credit cards] is that retailers are much more liberal in issuing a credit card to customers than the banks might be,” said Craig Shearman, vice president at the National Retail Federation. “These cards are very often offered to young people who are just starting to build a credit history or they can be offered to someone who maybe has a weaker credit history who wants to get a card.”

The retailers with the highest interest rates on their credit cards are Big Lots, Zales, Brandsource, and Piercing Pagoda, which all offer APRs near 30%, the maximum allowed, according to the CreditCards.com survey.

A high interest rate coupled with a habit of not paying your bill could could be damaging.

“If you tend to carry a balance on your credit card, an interest rate this high will come back to bite you,” Bera wrote.

Some retailers offer special financing or deferred-interest deals, but those can also be dangerous for shoppers prone to racking up debt. For example, 26 of the cards surveyed by CreditCards.com allow customers to avoid interest entirely if a purchase is paid in full by a specific date. If the balance isn’t paid off in the time frame, however, the cardholder will be responsible for paying back interest dating back to the original purchase date.

Ultimately, Bera suggests not limiting yourself to one retailer — unless you’re particularly loyal to that store and disciplined about paying your bill — because many traditional credit cards offer cash back and points that you can spend at several different retailers and on travel.

Expect Used-Car Prices to Skyrocket in the Southeast Post-Hurricane https://briefnews.eu/expect-used-car-prices-to-skyrocket-in-the-southeast-post-hurricane/ https://briefnews.eu/expect-used-car-prices-to-skyrocket-in-the-southeast-post-hurricane/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 15:07:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/expect-used-car-prices-to-skyrocket-in-the-southeast-post-hurricane/ Flooded cars

Remember the 2009 Cash for Clunkers program? Some hated it. Others invested in this new form of government cheese. After eight weeks, the entire USA had spent nearly $ 3 billion in taxpayer money to supplement the purchase of almost 690,000 vehicles. It was a big deal, but not nearly as big as what’s happening right now in the Southeast thanks to hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

–

Roughly a million vehicles have been totaled from Texas to the southern tip of Florida. When Superstorm Sandy hit the New York tri-state area in 2012, auto sales in metropolitan New York City skyrocketed 49 percent in a single month. Yet, as far as vehicle population is concerned, the aftermath of that storm represents a fraction of the damage Harvey and Irma have left from Houston to Miami. Industry trade paper Automotive News reported estimates that retail sales in Houston were up 40 to 50 percent over year-ago levels in the immediate aftermath of the storm, even as inventories were depleted by flood damage.

–

When extreme disasters strike, local car dealers at ground zero will fan out into surrounding wholesale dealer auctions to buy whatever they can to fulfill the surge in demand. Within a week of Harvey’s landfall, there were dealers throughout southeast Texas visiting mega auctions in Atlanta, Tampa, and Tulsa. These folks were loading up cars and trucks on transport vehicles that were headed out to places including Houston and Corpus Christi.

–

Bradley Williams has been a large-scale buyer for franchise and independent dealers, and he’s seen this invasion of demand at regional auctions before. “Everyone from Texas is up in Tennessee now, and it’s going to be like this for the next two to three months now that Florida got hit, too,” Williams said. “I have to go buy cars in Ohio for a Tennessee store at this point.” The spike in demand hits every level of the used-car market, from late-model cars and trucks with fewer than 50,000 miles on their odometers to runaround beaters that have been to the moon and back.

A spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas told Car and Driver earlier this month that about 15 percent of Texans generally drive without insurance. Of the Texan motorists that are insured, about 75 percent have comprehensive coverage, which would cover flood damage. I would venture to estimate that a substantial number of those who did keep comprehensive insurance coverage have older vehicles that aren’t worth very much. This level of loss on the low side of the market means that cheap cars will soon be in incredibly short supply for the next several months. Even up in the Northeast.

–

If there is one saving grace for the Southeast in terms of shopping for a vehicle, it is the timing of these natural disasters. Most major hurricanes take place during the late summer to early fall, a time when the used-car market is usually soft. Still, values have already been going up. “I watched an ’09 Focus with 115K [miles] do $ 4400 today at auction,” said Kristen Mauro, owner of Image Auto Sales in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, noting that the retail value is $ 4800. That suggests the wholesale price allows only a slim profit margin or that the buyer plans to sell the car at an inflated price. “I seriously don’t understand where people are going with these vehicles.”

–

–

The double wallop that hit the Southeast is going to have an impact on used-car prices for a long time. A natural disaster can bring out the price gougers and opportunists like little else. So if you live in one of the hurricane-impacted areas and already enjoy what you drive, keep it if you can. Deals won’t be happening any time soon.

Car insurance premium costs skyrocket in the UK and this is the controversial reason why https://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-premium-costs-skyrocket-in-the-uk-and-this-is-the-controversial-reason-why/ https://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-premium-costs-skyrocket-in-the-uk-and-this-is-the-controversial-reason-why/#respond Tue, 05 Sep 2017 11:48:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-premium-costs-skyrocket-in-the-uk-and-this-is-the-controversial-reason-why/

Car insurance costs have skyrocketed over the past year due to the introduction of new controversial taxes and changes to policies.

An increase from 10 per cent to 12 per cent on Insurance Premium Tax and a change to the Ogden discount rate is among the reasons premiums are skyrocketing.

The Ogden discount rate is used to calculate personal injury compensation pay-outs.

Figures published by comaprthemarket.com suggest that 17 to 24 year-old drivers are paying eight per cent more on their car insurance premium year on year.

On average they are required to pay a premium of £1,354 per year to insure their vehicle.

It’s not just the cost of car insurance that is crippling drivers  as the average overall vehicle running costs as calculated to be £2,379 a year which has increased three per cent year on year.

John Miles, head of motor at comparethemarket.com, said: “The price of insurance remains the single biggest cost for young drivers by far and the cost of cover continues to rise rapidly.”

“These past six months have seen the first positive change for young drivers in a long time.

“However, because the fall is due to lower fuel prices, there is no guarantee that this trend will last over the longer term.”

Despite the year-on-year rise, young drivers car running costs ahem fell over the past six months by 0.75 per cent.

The cost of fuel has also dropped cutting around £70 off the average £811 fuel bill.

UK passport applications for IRISH citizenship SKYROCKET by 70 per cent after Brexit https://briefnews.eu/uk-passport-applications-for-irish-citizenship-skyrocket-by-70-per-cent-after-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-passport-applications-for-irish-citizenship-skyrocket-by-70-per-cent-after-brexit/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 14:29:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-passport-applications-for-irish-citizenship-skyrocket-by-70-per-cent-after-brexit/

The number of British passport holders applying for the Irish counterpart has soared by 69 per cent in the first quarter of 2017.

There have so far been 51,079 applications from Brits this year and a total of 250,000 Irish passports were issued in that timeframe.

The number of issued passports is predicted to reach one million by the end of 2017.

Last year, 733,060 passports were issued, up nine per cent on 2015. About 65,000 of those were for Great Britain and Northern Ireland citizens.

The three months following the Brexit referendum saw the biggest surge for UK applications, with 83 per cent more than the year before.

Foreign minister Charlie Flanagan believes people are trying to hold onto their citizenship in the EU.

He told the Guardian: “It’s reasonable to suggest that Brexit is a factor in what are record numbers of applications.

“I think it’s also reasonable to assume that there are large numbers of people of Irish descent who now feel that they would like to remain as EU citizens in what is a changing time in relations between Ireland and the UK.”

The sharp increase has led to extra staff being hired by the department and the introduction of an online passport renewal service.

Ireland’s population stood at almost five million during the 2016 census.

Residents of Northern Ireland are entitled to both Irish and EU citizenship under the Good Friday agreement of 1998.

Flanagan said the immediate surge in applications post-Brexit vote in June was due to a “sense of concern” about the future.
