X-Philes, you might want to take a seat, because what we’re going to tell you is a really big deal: Per this exclusive X-Files Season 11 video… it looks like Scully finally has a desk of her own.

We know. We’re as flabbergasted/triumphant as you are. And the special agent’s long-awaited seating arrangement is just one piece of important intel that can be gleaned from watching the video above.

In the clip, series creator Chris Carter — as well as stars Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny and Mitch Pileggi — reassure viewers that any hiccups in the sci-fi drama’s 10th season have been ameliorated in its 11th, which premieres on Wednesday, Jan. 3 (Fox, 8/7c). “It feels more like quintessential X-Files this season,” Anderson says, teeing up Duchovny, who notes, “We’re better set up to get back to the partnership and the banter that comes with that.”

And though the FBI’s Most Unwanted do seem to be back to form in the video, there are a bunch more visuals that we need to talk about. So watch the video above, then click on the gallery to the right for a detailed analysis. And then, hit the comments with your thoughts on the revival’s upcoming season.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

'The Grand Tour' season 2 debuts with less Mike Skinner, more David Hasselhoff https://briefnews.eu/the-grand-tour-season-2-debuts-with-less-mike-skinner-more-david-hasselhoff/ https://briefnews.eu/the-grand-tour-season-2-debuts-with-less-mike-skinner-more-david-hasselhoff/#respond Sat, 09 Dec 2017 04:52:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-grand-tour-season-2-debuts-with-less-mike-skinner-more-david-hasselhoff/

The general consensus about the “The Grand Tour” season 1 seemed to be that there were teething problems, some things didn’t really work and scenarios seemed more contrived than they had been on “Top Gear.” However, it was still a car show featuring Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, whose chemistry hadn’t diminished and who still deliver a far better product than any of the other English-speaking hosts that have been assembled under the banner of “Top Gear.” Viewers seemed willing to give “The Grand Tour” some leeway with the assumption that things would get better in season 2.

Well, it’s here and I woke up this morning to find episode 1 ready to watch on Amazon Prime. First thing’s first: were the main season 1 problems corrected? Yes!

Thing No. 1 that didn’t work about season 1 was “The American.” As was previously reported, Mike Skinner is gone. Good riddance. However, as there was no hot new car featured in the premiere, there was no need to take it around the Eboladrome and therefore no clue as to who or what will replace The American. Stay tuned.

Thing No. 2 that didn’t work was celebrity brain crash. Personally, I didn’t hate it – it sort of worked in a “You killed Kenny! You bastard!” kind of way – but it always dragged on too long, a symptom of the show’s general pacing issues. Nevertheless, it too is gone, because as they say on this week’s episode “We’re not doing it anymore because too many people died … And because you all hated it.”

In its place is “Celebrity Face Off,” where a pair of celebrities from a similar field will each post a lap time in a Jaguar F-Type around a new, rather nifty track that is part paved and part gravel. Looks fun. As it was on “Top Gear,” the interview itself drags on too long and its quality will obviously depend on the celebrities in question. In this case it’s a battle of former talent show judges: David Hasselhoff from “America’s Got Talent” and Ricky Wilson from the British version of “The Voice” and lead singer of the Kaiser Chiefs. It’s as thrilling as you might imagine, but then “Top Gear” basically had the exact same feature. Except there are two people competing against each other rather than adding their times to a big board, and the car is good instead of reasonably priced, and it’s totally different enough that the BBC won’t sue them.

Beyond that, I suppose it’s important to note that “The Grand Tour” isn’t really touring anymore. Well, at least the tent isn’t. It would seem it’s parked permanently in what is apparently Jeremy Clarkson’s backyard. And by backyard I mean palatial English estate. As the moving tent didn’t really add that much to the show, I’m fine with it.

“The tent may be here,” Clarkson says in the episode. “But this is still ‘The Grand Tour’ and the globe is still our playground.”

Conversation Street is back once again and like the rest of the show it continues to feel more scripted than “Top Gear” ever did. It’s hard to know why but the banter feels more contrived now, as do the scenarios in which the guys find themselves on their adventures.

Specifically, in the first episode, they are driving super cars through Switzerland: Clarkson in a Lamborghini Aventador S, May in a Honda NSX and the Hammond in the Croatian electric super car, the Rimac Concept 1.

“Well, we all know how that ends,” Clarkson muddles under his breath, telegraphing what had previously been widely reported during the segment’s filming. But I won’t spoil it in case you missed it. If you do know, however, the event in question is rather nail biting. I thought it was handled well.

Like many past TG/GT challenges featuring a trio of super cars, though, this one isn’t quite as entertaining as those featuring old cars or more ordinary cars where more can naturally go wrong. Or rather, go wrong without ending in a fireball, a medivac chopper and the premature end to the challenge. But there I go spoiling things.

So, should you watch it? Sure! The preview of the season showed plenty of interesting cars (Ford GT, Kia Stinger, Mercedes GT R) and adventures (I’m particularly looking forward to their trip to Colorado in a trio of old Jaguars), so I’m going to say there is in fact improvement, they’ve heard the criticism and although this particular episode could’ve been better, it felt more like the “Top Gear” of old.

The X-Files Update: Mitch Pileggi to Return as Skinner in Season 11 https://briefnews.eu/the-x-files-update-mitch-pileggi-to-return-as-skinner-in-season-11/ https://briefnews.eu/the-x-files-update-mitch-pileggi-to-return-as-skinner-in-season-11/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2017 00:41:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-x-files-update-mitch-pileggi-to-return-as-skinner-in-season-11/

Mulder and Scully won’t be going it alone when The X-Files returns for an eleventh season.

Mitch Pileggi has signed on to reprise his role as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner on the Fox sci-fi drama, our sister site Deadline is reporting. The cult favorite was revived by Fox last year after a 14-year hiatus, with a ten-episode Season 11 slated to air sometime during the 2017-18 TV season.

Pileggi joins series stars David Duchovny (Agent Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Agent Dana Scully), who have already signed on to return for Season 11. Series creator Chris Carter will executive-produce the season, with veteran writers Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong returning to chip in episodes.

Making his debut way back in Season 1, Skinner served as Mulder and Scully’s FBI supervisor and quickly became a fan favorite. Outside of The X-Files, Pileggi’s recent TV roles include FX’s Sons of Anarchy and TNT’s Dallas revival.

TV reviews: Broken, Divided Britain and Frank Skinner on Muhammad Ali https://briefnews.eu/tv-reviews-broken-divided-britain-and-frank-skinner-on-muhammad-ali/ https://briefnews.eu/tv-reviews-broken-divided-britain-and-frank-skinner-on-muhammad-ali/#respond Sun, 04 Jun 2017 15:28:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tv-reviews-broken-divided-britain-and-frank-skinner-on-muhammad-ali/

The Liverpool-set series was postponed from last week, quite rightly so, as the relentless sadness of the drama would have been too much after the bombing in Manchester, but if you needed a reminder of how it feels to be human McGovern delivers it with both barrels.

Big, burly hard man Sean Bean plays Father Michael – no, wait, he’s fantastic as a tenderhearted character – trying to do his best for his hard-up parishioners. One of whom is Christina (Anna Friel) a skint, out of work, single mother. She lost her job after “borrowing” money from the till, then had a punch up with the manager and can’t claim benefits for 13 weeks.

Father Michael tries to help; he sees Christine can’t afford a fancy dress for her daughter’s first communion and tries to get the children to take it in their school uniforms.

He’s a good man, but has his own demons. Flashbacks to his childhood were utterly heartbreaking; a mother screaming “You dirty, filthy beast, have you got no ****** shame?” at the poor mite for reasons as yet unexplained; young Michael reciting a beautiful poem he’d written, only for his teacher to scream “WHO HELPED YOU?” and give him the tawse across his hand.

No wonder Michael is full of doubt. And now his mother is dying and needs him, as his hopeless brothers won’t share the load of her care.

Sean Bean as Father Michael in Jimmy McGovern’s very human new BBC drama, Broken

Christine has mother issues, too. Hers died unexpectedly, and the big twist in Broken was that she kept her mother’s death a secret for days until she could claim her pension money.

Deeply sad? Yes. Depressing? Yes. But McGovern’s very human dramas, with their beautiful detail, are a necessity in a television schedule full of flash types on reality shows.

Seeing Father Michael tucked up in bed, reflecting while he’s reading the Bible and listening to the Shipping Forecast; and, most powerfully, a long, silent, scene where Christine discovers her dead mother and caresses her face, were rare moments of stillness on the box and illustrate that McGovern isn’t afraid to show that into each life a little rain must fall. Even if in some cases, in his work, it’s a hurricane.

The use of music in Broken was exceptional, too. I was welling up at the use of Nina Simone’s version of Randy Newman’s bleak but beautiful I Think It’s Going To Rain Today at the beginning of the drama and was floored when Simone sang I Get Along Without You Very Well to accompany shots of Christine’s loneliness.

Broken is visceral viewing but, ultimately, it’s about the basic human values of love, duty and faith. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series, which hopefully includes more of Line Of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar as Father Michael’s confidante Father Peter.

Divided NationPA

Grayson Perry said he was pleased the two vases ended up so similar

If you’re not religious, the nation’s number one secular confessor is Grayson Perry. Everyone wants to spill all to the artist, who introduced his Divided Britain (C4, Tuesday) show in rather cooler vestments than Father Michael’s – a Little Bo Peep frock and bonnet.

He left the frocks at home to visit Lincolnshire’s Boston and London’s Hackney (the places in Britain which most strongly voted for Leave and Remain) to talk to Brexit remainers and leavers, and make a pair of giant vases reflecting their views in his studio. “The ‘leave’ pot is… maybe as much as 4 per cent larger,” he said with his fabulously dirty laugh.

It’s getting quite repetitious to say how great Perry is at interviewing the Great British Public, but he gets under the skin of his interviewees brilliantly and non judgmentally. He even got a young Lithuanian man in Boston to admit that he’d have voted for Brexit. And for anyone who thought that remainer Perry would give the leavers a hard time, I, a fellow remainer, came away not liking the Hackney yummy yoga mummies much. As for the Sober Daytime Rave in the borough, I still can’t wipe the sneer from my face.

Like Broken, it’s the details Perry and his production team show that make his programmes very human, such as the Leavers in a genteel Boston club choosing Ferrero Rocher chocolates; and the cracked heels in Jesus sandals of a Remain protester.

And the pots at the end? Almost identical, funnily enough. “We dislike no one as much as those that are nearly the same as us,” Perry concluded, cosily, but conceded that the argument would rumble on.

Even the power of Perry and his pots couldn’t cover up the cracks in the Brexit divide but it was an enjoyable journey. More, next, on how Perry actually makes those pots and those fantastic glazes. You can feel me straining to make a joke about ancient Crackerjack presenters, can’t you?

Now, who’s the shoo-in presenter of a documentary about Muhammad Ali? That’s right, comedian Frank Skinner who was inspired by Ali’s comic gifts as much as his sporting abilities, and the programme was all the better for not having an earnest, sporty, angle.

Muhammad AliGETTY

Frank Skinner On Muhammad Ali dug up some genuinely surprising facts

Frank Skinner On Muhammad Ali (BBC1, Thursday) did the usual biographical thing, with access to Ali’s family, but also dug up some genuinely surprising facts. I didn’t know that after he was banned from boxing due to his opposition to the Vietnam War he starred in a Black Power musical called Buck White, and that Ali became good friends with a British bareknuckle fighter called Paddy Monaghan who had started a pro-Ali campaign.

It was fun to see Skinner and Paddy’s son Tyrone recreate the Ali v Joe Frazier Fight Of The Century outside the Monaghan house on a council estate that Ali visited a dozen times.

A good interviewer, that Skinner chap. If we can get him on a potter’s wheel and in a frock, maybe Grayson Perry has a rival.

David Stephenson will be back next week.

The Trial: A Murder in the Family – Is Lewis Skinner GUILTY of Carla's murder? https://briefnews.eu/the-trial-a-murder-in-the-family-is-lewis-skinner-guilty-of-carlas-murder/ https://briefnews.eu/the-trial-a-murder-in-the-family-is-lewis-skinner-guilty-of-carlas-murder/#respond Wed, 24 May 2017 01:56:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-trial-a-murder-in-the-family-is-lewis-skinner-guilty-of-carlas-murder/

A new day in the fictional court saw a witness recall seeing Lewis on Cross Street at 10.03am on the morning of Carla’s death.

Lewis told the court that he had left Carla’s house before 9am, heading to the park to get coffee and play a game on his phone.

He then explained how his bus was late, meaning he walked to the garage instead to collect the car.

Lewis insisted that it was “untrue” that he went back to Cross Street and was also not suspect that former couple Carla and Simon Davis were getting back together.

Speaking to the court, he also said that he did not suspect that Carla was pregnant by someone else and would have “forgiven her” if he had known.

However, in a twist, the jury who had favoured him until this point were then told that Lewis had been dismissed from the police force after being found guilty of ABH.

It was also revealed that Lewis had given the police an incorrect location in his initial statement, which he also admitted.

Suspecting that Lewis had turned his phone to airplane mode to commit the murder, the cross examiner said that his former police knowledge would mean that he knew GPS wouldn’t be able to track his whereabouts, opening up a chance for him to kill Carla.

Lewis protested that airplane mode was only switched on to save battery and not to disable GPS.

Simon later told the court that there was no response when he arrived at Carla’s home to find the back door left open, food on the floor, and Carla’s body.

He also confirmed that his ex-wife’s account of him slapping her was true, but denied striking or causing injury to her, including on the day she died.

Carla’s ex-husband was also unsure why he waited eight minutes between his 999 phone calls.

The Trial: A Murder in the Familycontinues tomorrow on at 9pm.
