The success of Internet of Things devices such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home have created an opportunity for developers to build voice-activated applications that connect ever deeper—into customers’ homes and personal lives. And—according to research by a team from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)—the potential to exploit some of the idiosyncrasies of voice-recognition machine-learning systems for malicious purposes has grown as well.

Called “skill squatting,” the attack method (described in a paper presented at USENIX Security Symposium in Baltimore this month) is currently limited to the Amazon Alexa platform—but it reveals a weakness that other voice platforms will have to resolve as they widen support for third-party applications. Ars met with the UIUC team (which is comprised of Deepak Kumar, Riccardo Paccagnella, Paul Murley, Eric Hennenfent, Joshua Mason, Assistant Professor Adam Bates, and Professor Michael Bailey) at USENIX Security. We talked about their research and the potential for other threats posed by voice-based input to information systems.

Its master’s voice

There have been a number of recent demonstrations of attacks that leverage voice interfaces. In March, researchers showed that, even when Windows 10 is locked, the Cortana “assistant” responds to voice commands—including opening websites. And voice-recognition-enabled IoT devices have been demonstrated to be vulnerable to commands from radio or television ads, YouTube videos, and small children.

Moog continues to move forward with its line of retro-inspired electronic instruments with a new standalone semi-modular analog synthesizer called Grandmother. The $ 899 unit works all on its own, or can be connected to other sound making devices, like Moog’s Mother-32, which doesn’t have a built-in keyboard.

This new Moog standalone synth has a built-in arpeggiator, sequencer and spring reverb tank (based on the Moog 905), and it doesn’t need any patching to make it work. You can, however, bypass the internal connections with your own patch cables, extending the sound-making capabilities of each module.

Grandmother has a 1/4-inch jack to connect a guitar or drum machine, as well. You can store up to three sequences, each with up to 256 notes and work two analog oscillators (based on the Minimoog) with their own selectable wave shapes and hard sync. There’s a classic four-pole ladder filter (based on Moog’s 904), a patchable 1-pole high pass filter, an analog ASDR envelope generator (based on Moog’s 911) and LFO, and MIDI in/out/through capability. There are 41 patch points with 21 inputs, 16 outputs and a parallel-wired four-jack multi port.

Of course, Moog isn’t the only synth maker reissuing classic gear. Korg has launched a couple of versions of its ARP Odyssey in 2015 and 2017, which have a similar design but a different sound and price point. Grandmother will debut at Moogfest this year (May 17th – 20th in Durham, North Carolina). Attendees will be able to get their hands on the device and watch new units being made on-site.

Amazon is making it easier for developers to add a variety of sound effects to their Alexa skills. The tech giant has launched a library full of built-in audio clips people can use to add — in Amazon’s words — “unique sounds” to their creations. Of course, by the time most developers are done tweaking their skills to add the audio clips, they’ll no longer seem unique. In fact, you should probably probably get used to hearing the same thing again and again. But developers do have quite a wide selection to choose from with 14 categories that include sounds you’d usually hear in cartoons and sci-fi shows, as as well as sounds of nature, humans and animals.

Amazon says developers can use those effects, say, to add applause for correct answers in a trivia game or spooky ghost-like moans for a horror/adventure game. The whole library is free for skill-makers, who can use the sounds on their own or combined with other files. From the Power Glove to Fallout 4‘s real-life Pip Boy, gamers have been pitched a lot of ridiculous hardware over the years. The Destiny 2 Ghost Alexa speaker and accompanying Alexa skill are no less ridiculous.

The skill, which also works on other Alexa-enabled speakers, allows Destiny 2 players to ask questions like, “Who are the Red Legion,” or “What should I do next?” and get answers back in the same voice they hear in the game. Amazon and game publisher Activision claim there are more than 1,000 lines to hear. Listed functions include telling you more about the game’s lore, identifying your next activity, changing your equipped gear, or inviting other players to group with you. As far as we’re aware, it’s the first Alexa skill to connect directly into an online game.

When Ars’ Sam Machkovech tried the skill out, he wasn’t impressed. For example, many query responses just cycle through several pre-canned messages, and the only gear management command that he discovered was, “Alexa, ask Ghost to equip my best weapon.” It’s entirely a gimmick, but would you have expected anything better? Also, sadly for those (very, very) few of us who preferred Peter Dinklage’s performance as Ghost over Nolan North’s, only North’s voice is available. Most players will be quite happy to see Dinklage is not involved, though.

If that doesn’t sound slightly convoluted in itself, you can also pre-order a $ 90 Ghost replica speaker that syncs with an Amazon Echo device to carry out your bidding. The perks include responses from the Ghost himself, Nolan North (unfortunately, there’s no Peter Dinklage option for fans of the first game), with over a thousand custom responses.

The Ghost speaker will ship on December 19th (but you’ll have to be fast as the limited edition replica is only available for the next three hours), while the Alexa skill is out now. Judging by its announcement, it seems Amazon wants devs to create more video game skills, as it looks to tap into the lucrative gaming market.

  • North Korea just pulled off an ICBM launch in realistic conditions, suggesting they may actually be able to strike Washington DC.
  • The launch took place during the fall and at night, as they’ve rarely ventured in the past.
  • This kind of launch would be difficult for the US to detect or stop.

North Korea demonstrated its most capable threat to the US yet on Tuesday night, with a 53 minute flight of what initial reports are calling an intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea has tested ICBMs before, but the country has never shown the ability to reach important east coast targets in the US like Washington DC or New York City. This time, not only did they show range, North Korea showed the kind of skills and tactics they’d need to actually nuke one of those targets.

North Korea usually avoids testing at night or in the winter or fall, but the timing of the test likely included a message: the threat to the US from ICBMs is real.

The South Korea and Japan detected a radio signal they found usually consistent with launch preparations earlier on Tuesday, but said it was likely “within days” until a test took place.

The quick run up from the signal to the launch and the timing in the dead of night suggest North Korea prioritized practicing a realistic nuclear strike on the US instead of just a drill.

In the past, the US has spotted North Korea’s preparations for a launch, but testing at night obscures that. Additionally, North Korea’s focus on road-mobile missile launchers serves the purpose of pulling off quick strikes from hidden locations — an ideal strategy for attacking a vigilant force like the US.

The launch follows the most heated ever passage of US-North Korean relations with President Donald Trump threatening to “totally destroy” Pyongyang and Kim Jong Un’s propaganda outlet sentencing Trump to death. The US led the world to sanction and isolate North Korea after its sixth nuclear test in September, when it displayed the capability to level entire cities with a nuclear device.

While it’s unknown what missile North Korea fired or if it can actually carry a nuclear payload as far as it flew on Tuesday, the launch communicates that Washington DC is now within range.

Blockchain technology is everywhere right now, and it feels like virtually every industry is ripe for disruption.

Today, Vanywhere — a skill sharing solution that lets anyone with a marketable skill capitalize on their knowledge — has announced the launch of its platform, which is underpinned with blockchain technology.

Of course, there are lots of ways people can share skills right now. Several marketplaces exist for this purpose, and beyond the likes of Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and Skillshare, there are millions of instructional YouTube videos for those looking to pick up new skills. Why is Vanywhere a viable alternative?

“Vanywhere is different than other platforms in that it’s the only one that provides you with live, 1-on-1 interactions,” Rami Shechter, CEO and founder of Vanywhere, told me. “When a user connects with a ‘skiller’ (that’s what we call the people offering skills on Vanywhere) they get the skiller’s full attention.”

That is different from many skill sharing platforms, which tend to rely on passive learning rather than an active interaction with the provider.

“The experience is interactive, personalized, and specific to their needs,” Shechter said. “In Q1 2017, we ran a pilot in Apple Tech Support and found that users loved that they could connect with personalized tech support over video chat. They reported that they solved their issues much faster when speaking with a skiller than through watching online tutorials, and [they] enjoyed the human interaction and personal touch.”

That test campaign generated 26 percent conversion from download to action, and Vanywhere claims it became the largest live video provider of Apple tech support in the world during its pilot.

So what does blockchain technology offer here?

“Vanywhere is a mainstream product that could have run without blockchain,” Shechter said. “However, the inclusion of blockchain takes the platform to the next level. Through blockchain, we can also build an ecosystem and an economy based on our token. Blockchain has allowed us to remove the dependence on third parties, like credit cards and payment gateways, enabling us to lower our commission and facilitate micropayments.”

The Vanywhere platform covers a wide range of topics and competencies, from fashion styling to understanding cryptocurrencies, local restaurant recommendations to art.

So instead of leaving you to wonder whether that blog post recommending the best restaurants in Lisbon was actually written by a local, Vanywhere lets you speak directly with a resident and has created an economy that rewards the skiller’s knowledge.

How does Vanywhere determine the skill level and suitability of the skiller, and how will it guard against inappropriate behavior?

“To become a skiller, people need to fill out an application which will be reviewed and approved by other members of the Vanywhere community,” Shechter said. “Community members receive guidelines to follow and are rated and rewarded in VANY tokens for approving qualified skillers. As part of the ecosystem, it behooves them to only authorize qualified skillers in order to preserve the quality of the platform that they’re a part of. Should there be any inappropriate behavior or disputes, they can be reported and investigated through our dispute mechanism.”

What’s next for the platform, and what will the initial coin offering (ICO) funds be used for?

“Our token sale in Q1 2018 is the next thing on the horizon,” Shechter said. “Funds raised from the sale will be used to further build our brand. One of the first verticals we’re launching with is cryptocurrency. Throughout the past several months, we’ve received a lot of interest from people in the crypto space [who want] to be skillers, so we will continue developing that vertical and others.”

Poshmark, which provides an online marketplace to buy and sell fashion items, announced today that it has raised $ 87.5 million in a round led by Temasek. Mayfield, Menlo Ventures, GGV Capital, Inventus Capital, Uncork Capital, Union Grove Venture Partners, and Cross Creek Advisors also participated.

Founded in 2011, the Redwood City, California-based startup has created what it calls a “social marketplace for fashion” where anyone can buy, sell, and share their style with others. Think eBay meets Instagram, but for fashion.

“The main difference between Poshmark and our competitors is that the company doesn’t focus on merchandise (or hold merchandise); it focuses on people,” wrote Poshmark founder and CEO Manish Chandra, in an email to VentureBeat. “Poshmark connects people to one another through their shared connection over fashion.”

The startup leverages social media platforms by connecting users to their friends. “When you sign up for Poshmark, you’re able to ‘friend’ all of your Facebook and Twitter friends who are already on the app,” he added.

Users can access Poshmark’s marketplace via the website and through the app, which is available on both iOS and Android. Sellers and buyers can then interact freely to exchange styles, share images, and make transactions.

According to Chandra, over 3 million sellers curate 7 to 8 million items on Poshmark each day, “creating one of the largest and most personal online fashion malls for the Instagram generation.” There are over 25 million items for sale from over 5,000 brands on the platform, according to the startup. These include Gucci, J.Crew, Louis Vuitton, Nike, and Tory Burch.

Poshmark monetizes on a transaction basis. For all sales under $ 15, Poshmark takes a flat commission of $ 2.95 — sellers keep the rest. For sales of $ 15 or more, sellers keep 80 percent of the sale price, and Poshmark collects the remaining 20 percent.

Poshmark also partners with brands that make up its Wholesale Marketplace, which is a specific section of the app where qualified community members can shop for wholesale merchandise. The startup currently partners with 100 brands, including Style Mafia and Snob Essentials.

To retain the millennial generation’s fleeting attention span, Poshmark has today unveiled a new product — Stylist Match, using Amazon Alexa. Users can say, “Alexa, ask Poshmark to style me,” choose a theme like Date Night or Cocktail Party, and receive curated looks from stylists in the Poshmark community.

Competitors in the online fashion retail space include The RealReal, ThredUp, and Rebagg, which recently raised $ 15.5 million.

Poshmark has raised nearly $ 160 million, to date. It will use the fresh injection of capital to further develop its platform, as well as expanding into new categories and countries. For now, the service is only available in the U.S.

Poshmark currently has about 200 employees.
