Imagine Kevin Hart asking, “Whatcha talkin’ bout Willis?”

That is the example ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey gave on Tuesday afternoon when announcing a new ABC special in which today’s stars will perform scripts from classic sitcoms of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s — live.

Late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel and actor/screenwriter Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) are teaming up to produce the special, to air debuting the 2017-18 TV season.

“I spent most of my childhood in front of a TV set, obsessively watching comedies from great producers like Norman Lear, Jim Burrows, James L. Brooks and Garry Marshall,” Kimmel said in a statement. “This is a way for a new generation of viewers to discover these classics and a new generation of actors to play characters they love, live in front of a studio audience.”

Kimmel, who was absent from this year’s ABC Upfront presentation (to spend time with his wife and their newborn son), also was announced on Tuesday to repeat as host of the Academy Awards, in early 2018.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Ratings: Designated Survivor Eyes Uptick, While ABC Sitcoms Go Low https://briefnews.eu/ratings-designated-survivor-eyes-uptick-while-abc-sitcoms-go-low/ https://briefnews.eu/ratings-designated-survivor-eyes-uptick-while-abc-sitcoms-go-low/#respond Thu, 27 Apr 2017 16:18:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ratings-designated-survivor-eyes-uptick-while-abc-sitcoms-go-low/

Designated Survivor‘s reveal of “the White House traitor” on Wednesday night drew 5.1 million total viewers and a 1.1 rating, marking its second straight uptick in the demo (if the numbers hold in finals).

On ABC’s sitcom front, The Goldbergs (5.2 mil/1.4) and Speechless (4.5 mil/1.2) each slipped two tenths in the demo to series lows, while both episodes of black-ish (4.4 mil/1.2, 4.2 mil/1.2) matched series lows in the demo.

Over on The CW, Arrow (1.5 mil/0.5) and The 100 (920K/0.3) returned steady in the demo while dipping to their second-smallest audiences ever.

Elsewhere….

25 Things Sitcoms Seriously Need To Stop Doing https://briefnews.eu/25-things-sitcoms-seriously-need-to-stop-doing/ https://briefnews.eu/25-things-sitcoms-seriously-need-to-stop-doing/#respond Thu, 27 Apr 2017 07:53:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/25-things-sitcoms-seriously-need-to-stop-doing/

1. The dad is stupid but loveable, while the mum is an uptight bitch.

It’s not real life, and it plays into outdated stereotypes that do a disservice to both men and women.

—katiexkx

2. Everyone dates everyone else in the one friendship group.

Sure, they’ve got to work with the cast they’ve got, and it creates drama/comedy, but it’s all just a bit… incestuous.

—kgibs2015

3. “Fat” versions of characters are made to seem stupid, slobby, and ugly.

“The fat suit, the fat jokes, and the lack of plus-sized people in roles that aren’t based around the fact that they’re fat. Why can’t a fat girl be a romantic lead without the plot centring on the problem of her weight?”

—megthiemed

4. Characters always have the most annoying catchphrases.

They might have been funny the first time, maybe even the first 20 times, but they get old real quick.

—torbanni

5. Huge things happen in one episode, and then never effect subsequent storylines/are never mentioned again.

“It may cause heartache, major disruption or the possibility of someone’s life being changed majorly, but it doesn’t matter because it’s all forgotten about by the next episode.”

—leannetillyk

6. Everyone always looks really nice, even if they’re just hanging out at home.

“I HATE it when characters wear regular clothes (jeans/shoes/etc.) when they’re meant to be lounging at home. Seriously most people don’t even wear pants when they’re chilling at home, like why would those characters be wearing boots or jeans?”

—kassidyf3

7. Sex is always so… clean.

“Couples have sex and then just casually lay there after like it’s not messy down there or there’s no condom to be thrown out or anything… or sometimes they go straight to sleep after, and I’m like ‘what the hell?!’.”

—holmesemilee

8. The meals are always full-on (although you rarely see people actually eating).

“I hate completely unrealistic meals. Like no one sets out an entire spread for breakfast – putting orange juice into a pitcher and slicing a bunch of fruit and different breads!”

—laurenk4b8b45417

9. Nobody says “bye” on the phone.

Conversations aren’t like real conversations – they’re straight to the point and then over, without any greetings or small talk.

—weregerbil

10. Characters with time-consuming jobs never seem to actually be at work.

In real life people don’t have that much time to sit around in bars or coffee shops.

—stephievee

11. Random, never-before-heard-of characters suddenly appear in later seasons.

Usually it’s a “cute” kid because all the other kids have hit puberty.

—laurieisnotlori

12. One character is always bullied for laughs.

“They make it seem like constantly making fun of someone is considered friendship. I mean, we all joke with our friends, but not 90% of the time, and not about stuff that we know they worry about. It’s not funny when you make fun of someones vulnerability, that’s called bullying.”

—tiiisha

13. People never say what they mean.

“A character is trying to tell another character something really important, but the other character interjects with their news first. The worst part is when the other character says ‘what was it you wanted to tell me?.’”

—carrieok

14. The rare occasions that there are non-white/cis/straight characters, they’re typically marginalised.

Their difference is mocked and laughed at.

—catew41f342aab

15. Characters have babies but hardly ever see/talk about them.

They have basically no impact on their lives, unless it’s for a one-off plot point.

—stephamaboble

16. There are those random, lazy episodes that are entirely made up of clips/flashbacks from other episodes.

“I just watched the season, why do I need to watch it over again?”

—lizziehw

17. Or the gimmicky episodes that have nothing to do with the overall plot.

“I despise those weird, non-canon gimmick episodes, such as musical episodes, alternate timeline episodes, and Christmas specials.”

—masterosausage

18. Little kids are unrealistically intelligent and precocious, and do things that cause chaos without really getting into trouble.

How many actual kids talk like teenagers/adults?

—kimloveh

19. Characters are recast with actors who look nothing like the original.

Really stretching that suspension of disbelief, folks.

—amyadesokan12

22. People go to bed with full faces of makeup, and when they wake up and it’s still perfect.

And their hair is always great, too.

—Naila Warren, Facebook

23. Groups of friends are present for every single life event.

Even if your friends are like your family, at least some of them have ACTUAL families who should be there.

—Helene Croussette, Facebook

25. And laugh tracks. Oh god, the laugh tracks.

“I am not yet at that point of loneliness where I enjoy hearing other people’s annoying staged laughs. WE GET THAT THE COMMENT BARBARA MADE WAS FUNNY! WE DO NOT NEED TO HEAR SOME LAUGHING TO PROVE IT!!!!”

—mollytlondon

Stick With ‘Great News’ — Like Most Sitcoms, It Rewards Patience https://briefnews.eu/stick-with-great-news-like-most-sitcoms-it-rewards-patience/ https://briefnews.eu/stick-with-great-news-like-most-sitcoms-it-rewards-patience/#respond Tue, 25 Apr 2017 13:07:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stick-with-great-news-like-most-sitcoms-it-rewards-patience/ Great News, the new NBC comedy that premieres tonight, is both a workplace sitcom and a family sitcom. Briga Heelan stars as Katie Wendelson, a 30-year-old news producer for a New Jersey TV station stuck working on fluffy segments like “Halloween costumes for obese pets.” When her overbearing mother, Carol (the wonderful Andrea Martin) drags her to a funeral, the minister’s eulogy inspires Katie to go after her dream of producing substantial stories — and inspires Carol to go after her dream of joining the workforce. She enrolls in school for TV production and promptly gets an internship at Katie’s station.

If it sounds a bit like 30 Rock, well, it is a bit like 30 Rock, and for good reason: Creator Tracey Wigfield won an Emmy for her writing on Tina Fey’s beloved showbiz sitcom. Great News shares 30 Rock’s socially awkward, ambitious-but-single (here, slightly younger) female lead, as well as its through-the-looking-glass perspective on the TV industry. Nicole Richie is surprisingly great as the Jenna Maroney type, a vapid, superficial anchor named Portia Scott-Griffith who was mentored by Roger Ailes and who pitches stories like, “Am I Snapchatting my vacation wrong?” (Yes, that would make Andrea Martin the Tracy Jordan analogue.) John Michael Higgins is perfectly cast as Portia’s counterpart, the veteran newsman Chuck Pierce. Adam Campbell plays Katie’s boss and potential love interest, Greg.

Like 30 Rock and another Tina Fey creation, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, there are lots of throwaway jokes and recurring gags here, the best of which is that we never really see Katie’s dad/Carol’s husband. An indication of his third-wheel status in the family, he’s perpetually out of focus in the background, or shot from behind, his face always obscured. At one point, Carol claims she left him in the car with the window open; in another episode, she and Katie forget his birthday, an incident that only warrants a brief cutaway to poor Dave Wendelson sitting at the kitchen table with a birthday cake, alone.

The relationship between Carol and Katie is the beating heart of Great News, a dynamic that, appropriately enough, sometimes overwhelms the show’s other elements — just as, appropriately enough, Martin’s pushy, stage-mom character sometimes eclipses her mousier daughter. It’s a funny dynamic, but it also adds a bit too much syrup to some of the episodes, and, at least at first, makes for a slightly weak protagonist in Katie. (Although, like Gilmore Girls, both mother and daughter are often central to any given episode.)

Ultimately, though, it works, because Great News is really about the overlap between personal and professional life — which is what any decent workplace comedy boils down to. The cruel joke at the heart of 30 Rock was that Fey’s Liz Lemon had no real personal life; she lived for her stupid show. Katie lives for the job, too, but the character is less jaded than Liz, and more open to the possibility of a fulfilling, well-rounded life. (I did mention she’s younger, right?)

The difference in personality — Katie’s an unabashed mama’s girl — gives Great News a slightly more wholesome quality than the tart 30 Rock. The fact that Great News bakes a will-they-won’t-they relationship into its core cast at all is an indication of its slightly softer approach. But as she learns over the course of the season to assert herself at work, Katie becomes a stronger character, bolder and funnier and with more personality. “My body is a temple, and by that I mean I let a lot of Jewish guys in,” she declares in one episode, giving herself the old Liz Lemon self-high-five.

Most sitcoms (recently, Superstore comes to mind) take a little time to find their footing and fine-tune the chemistry between cast members, and Great News is no exception. The more we get to know the characters, particularly the supporting cast, the funnier they become, like Beth, the no-nonsense doomsayer meteorologist, played by Wigfield: “Like it says on my tramp stamp,” she declares in one episode, “weather changes.” And, of course, the tension between Greg and Katie slowly builds.

If you’re not feeling it by episode three or four, jump back in around episode seven, when things start heating up a bit and the cast finds its groove. But Great News has enough jokes to float you through some of the earlier, weaker episodes — particularly those lampooning the conventions of TV news. (“Our job isn’t tracking down clues or meeting mysterious sources,” Greg tells Katie. “It’s saying stuff on TV that people already read on the internet.”) By the end of the ten-episode first season, the show won me over. Like any relationship worth pursuing, a sitcom demands commitment.

Great News premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC.
