Waze is playing even more nicely with Apple after it enabled CarPlay support back in September. The latest version of its iOS app lets you use Siri Shortcuts to find your way to a destination. You’ll be able to set up shortcuts for things like your morning commute, the drive home and directions to your favorite places.

The benefits of using voice control for navigation while driving are fairly obvious, and Waze’s addition of Siri Shortcuts offers users more of an alternative to Apple Maps. The update will surely come as a boon for those who use it to steer clear of traffic, crashes and construction. However, it might not help you steer clear of police checkpoints in future after the NYPD asked Waze’s owner Google to remove them from the app.

Apple releases watchOS 5 with fitness upgrades and smarter Siri https://briefnews.eu/apple-releases-watchos-5-with-fitness-upgrades-and-smarter-siri/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-releases-watchos-5-with-fitness-upgrades-and-smarter-siri/#respond Mon, 17 Sep 2018 17:42:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-releases-watchos-5-with-fitness-upgrades-and-smarter-siri/

If you have an Apple Watch and aren’t determined to buy Series 4, your upgrade is here. Apple has released watchOS 5 right on schedule, promising big updates to fitness and Siri as well as a few apps that were arguably overdue. You now have automatic workout detection , competition with friends, advanced run tracking and expanded workouts that include hiking and yoga. Siri, meanwhile, no longer needs to wait for “hey Siri” when you raise your wrist, and the Siri watch face both provides more info (including Siri Shortcuts) and third-party app support.

Other prominent updates include a native podcast app, a Walkie Talkie app (above) for back-and-forth voice chats and interactive notifications. Your watch can even serve as a student ID card with schools that support it, such as Duke, the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma.

The update is available through the Watch app on your iPhone under General > Software Update. As is often the case, expect this to take a while — you won’t want to do this right before a workout. Your iPhone automatically backs up the Apple Watch, too, so you shouldn’t be in too much trouble if anything goes wrong.

This, iOS 12 aren’t the only major upgrades rolling out Apple’s door, either. You can also expect an Apple TV software update with Dolby Atmos audio support, while a HomePod upgrade lets you start phone calls, set multiple timers, issue Siri Shortcuts and search for songs by their lyrics. All told, you’ll have plenty of updating to do if you’re deeply invested in Apple’s ecosystem.

Iceland Fights to Protect Its Native Tongue From Siri https://briefnews.eu/iceland-fights-to-protect-its-native-tongue-from-siri/ https://briefnews.eu/iceland-fights-to-protect-its-native-tongue-from-siri/#respond Sat, 14 Jul 2018 04:26:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/iceland-fights-to-protect-its-native-tongue-from-siri/

If you learn one thing from Ari Pall Kristinsson, learn this: The Icelandic language is not in decline. “This is not an endangered language, not at all,” he says — but for that to stay true, a lot of work will have to be done, and he and his colleagues at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies are going to make damn sure that work gets done.

That’s not to say that reports of the death of Icelandic have been greatly exaggerated. While 90 percent of Icelanders still speak it as their first language, recent studies have found that 30 percent of 13- to 15-year-olds speak English with their friends, and exposure to technology like Siri and Alexa that doesn’t support Icelandic is swiftly eroding the language’s relevance to a generation that sees a more expansive future in learning English. But Kristinsson, head of the institute’s Language Planning Department, isn’t going down without a fight.

Increased concerns that Icelandic will fall into decline have brought both government intervention and money: Last year, the Icelandic government allocated funding for the institute to develop language technologies in Icelandic, so islanders can enjoy Siri, Alexa, GPS and any other talking robots in their native language. The project, set to kick off later this year, will focus on speech synthesis and speech recognition in Icelandic, as well as open-source machine learning systems geared toward the language. It’s a heavier lift with Icelandic than with, say, French, because there are fewer texts to work from, meaning linguistic research databases known as corpora simply can’t achieve the same volume.

“For languages like ours, there has to be a constant effort to try to find ways to make this work,” explains Steinþór Steingrímsson, a project manager at the institute who’s focused on language technology. “But technology-wise, we don’t have to be as pessimistic as we were two or three years ago.” For Steingrímsson, 41 — who’s been with the institute since 2011 after a varied career of language instruction, computer game programming and journalism — the five years of funding may not be enough to create all the technology they need, but it’ll be enough to establish proof-of-concept that something can be done.

Kristinsson worries about the country’s young people: “We need to be able to control our cars in the future in Icelandic.”

Kristinsson spent much of his career working for the Icelandic Language Institute and then a decade leading it (the institute, along with several other bodies, became the Árni Magnússon Institute in 2006). The 58-year-old has a Ph.D. in Icelandic linguistics and has chaired both the Icelandic Linguistics Society and the Icelandic Place Names Committee: If Icelandic has a champion, this is the guy.

While France’s Académie Française organizes French translations of foreign phrases and words that creep into the lexicon, Iceland has no such authorized body, instead making do with loose coalitions by industry that meet to determine new Icelandic terms for the medical community, legal community and so on. The closest to an organized national body is the Icelandic Language Council, of which Kristinsson is a member, which convenes annually to issue a resolution on the status of Icelandic and choose a theme to emphasize — last year it was the paucity of children’s literature written in Icelandic, viewed as a major problem for keeping children interested in their native language.

To be sure, there are examples of languages without a wealth of native speakers surviving in the digital age. When hammering out their battle plan, Steingrimsson says, they looked to Estonia, which initiated a series of digital language protection projects in 2006 to keep its notoriously difficult language from being left behind, though Iceland’s approach is more top-down than Estonia’s and won’t involve open competitions for applications. Kristinsson worries about the country’s young people, who, he says, must find Icelandic useful and relevant to discourage them from turning to English: “We need to be able to control our cars in the future in Icelandic.” And as smart technology and digital assistants become ever more ubiquitous, the technology looks increasingly like the most critical piece of the puzzle. But there’s hope: In May, Microsoft added Icelandic as a supported language, the same month that Google, which already had Icelandic speech recognition, added Icelandic to Google Maps — a happy accident, Kristinsson explains, thanks to there being an Icelandic engineer working at Google.

While Kristinsson focuses his concern on the attitudes of teens and young adults toward Icelandic, the trouble may start sooner than that. Sigríður Sigurjónsdóttir, a professor of Icelandic linguistics who’s completed year two of a three-year research project into the effects of English exposure on Icelanders, says exposure among the very young may be a far bigger problem. “We’re now seeing very young children watching YouTube videos or Netflix, and around 40 percent of the 3- to 5-year-olds we talk to started using the internet before the age of 2,” she explains. “That’s when you acquire your language.” Which means that Iceland’s youngest citizens may not effectively absorb Icelandic grammar, even if it remains their first language. “Young people see the world as their playground, and this shapes their attitudes,” Sigurjónsdóttir says. “They don’t see Icelandic as useful.”

But it is, argues Kristinsson. And while Iceland’s youth might not realize it, many others do. Úlfar Bragason, a professor at the University of Iceland, says that enrollment in the university’s Icelandic as a second language program has shot up from about 300 to 500 in just a couple of years. Meanwhile, 180,000 people are using the free Iceland Online language learning program. And even if Icelandic isn’t on the popular language learning app Duolingo, Bragason says he believes their program is the better way to learn. “Icelandic is actually cool abroad,” Sigurjónsdóttir agrees. “But here in Iceland, it’s not that cool.”

If you want to test your tongue on Icelandic, here’s a primer from the “I Heart Reykjavík” podcast.

‘Hey Siri’ is purely optional in watchOS 5 https://briefnews.eu/hey-siri-is-purely-optional-in-watchos-5/ https://briefnews.eu/hey-siri-is-purely-optional-in-watchos-5/#respond Mon, 04 Jun 2018 18:33:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hey-siri-is-purely-optional-in-watchos-5/

Why do you need to say Siri when you’ve already got your Apple Watch hovering right in front of your face? Soon, you won’t have to . WatchOS 5 will drop the need for you to vocally summon Siri, instead, as soon as your raise your device up, it’ll start listening to your requests, questions and messaging apps. It’ll also stop those awkward Siri requests that seem to raise your phone, watch, iPad and HomePod in one single, horrific instant.

One of the smallest members of Apple’s product lineup may get a useful update this year. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is working on new models of its AirPod wireless earbuds. One could debut later this year with an updated wireless chip and another with a water-resistant design may come out in 2019.

AirPods arrived in 2016 alongside the iPhone 7 as a solution to the smartphone’s lack of headphone jack. The W1 chip inside the AirPods helps it connect almost immediately to a user’s Apple products. According to the report, Apple is developing a new model with a new wireless chip that helps it better manage Bluetooth connections. It’s unclear if this new chip will be a variation of the W2 chip, which debuted with the Apple Watch Series 3 last year, or an entirely new one.

This year’s new model may also give users voice activation for Apple’s virtual assistant Siri. Currently, users must tap the side of an AirPod and then say “Hey Siri” to use voice commands. In the new AirPod models, summoning Siri would be hands-free, requiring only a voice command and no physical prompt.

Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana, Siri, and Bixby, we guess, are getting more and more prevalent, the narrative goes. A lot of people believe the personal assistant’s moment is now. But why now? Could it have happened back in say, 1987?

Probably not. But if you want a speculative glimpse at what that would have been like, you can watch this video from the YouTube channel Squirrel Monkey‘s popular Wonders of the World Wide Web series. As with previous entries about current products like Instagram and Tinder, it plays out like a VHS instructional video explaining to computer newbies how to get Siri working on their home computers.

It’s a good reminder of how far we’ve come; even if, hypothetically, someone had been able to get the intelligence and voice recognition right on a personal assistant in that time, all the other hardware and software limitations would surely have gotten in the way. Like abiogenesis in the primordial soup, sometimes the conditions all have to align for a technology to become usable by the general public.

Apple’s iMac Pro may have hands-free Siri voice control https://briefnews.eu/apples-imac-pro-may-have-hands-free-siri-voice-control/ https://briefnews.eu/apples-imac-pro-may-have-hands-free-siri-voice-control/#respond Sun, 19 Nov 2017 07:33:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apples-imac-pro-may-have-hands-free-siri-voice-control/

Those rumors of Apple using custom ARM chips for more features inside Macs? They’re true… and you might not have to wait long to witness it in action. Jonathan Levin has combed through BridgeOS code that should accompany the iMac Pro, and it looks as if Apple will be using a cut-down version of the iPhone 7’s A10 Fusion chip as a co-processor. While its full functionality isn’t clear yet, developer Steve Troughton-Smith notes that the A10 appears to handle macOS’ boot and security processes, such as passing firmware to the main Xeon processor and managing media copy protection. More importantly, Guilherme Rambo has found references to “hey Siri” support — as with Cortana on Windows 10, you might not have to click an icon or invoke a keyboard shortcut just to ask about the weather.

It’s possible that the A10 chip is always running, which would represent a break from the custom T1 chip driving the Touch Bar in some recent MacBook Pro models. That would line up with leaks which had custom ARM chips handling macOS’ Power Nap feature, which fetches data while the system is sleeping. The iMac Pro wouldn’t have to spool up its power-hungry Xeon processor just to grab your email. And of course, that could be very important for “hey Siri” commands, which could theoretically run even if the Mac is dormant.

The findings don’t necessarily mean that the iMac or macOS will be more restrictive than before. You may not know exactly what the A10 does until the iMac Pro ships, which is expected before the end of 2017. However, this does show that Apple is putting its mobile experience to use in the computer realm, even if it’s just to save power and processing overhead. And the iMac Pro may be a good testbed for this functionality. As Troughton-Smith points out, Apple could gauge how the companion A10 works without the bulk of users “freaking out.” You could get a more refined experience if and when the A10 finds its way to mainstream Macs — particularly MacBooks, where the chip could let Siri and Power Nap run without significantly affecting your battery life.
