A CALM USUALLY descends on America’s farm belt in November. Combines have mostly finished churning across fields; trucks have hauled crops to grain elevators; and farmers retreat to their living rooms to rest. This year, at least by one measure, they should feel particularly content. Randy Sims, a hog-and-grain farmer in western Illinois, produced 75 bushels of soyabeans per acre, a third more than in the past. Indeed American soyabean production in 2018 is expected to reach 4.69bn bushels, a record. But it is unclear who will buy them.

America’s farmers are at the centre of President Donald Trump’s trade war. More than a fifth of agricultural exports face new tariffs. From January to September pork exports to Mexico and China fell by 31% and 36%, respectively. Sales of soyabeans, America’s biggest farm export, to China have plunged by 98% since January (see chart). “It’s a big concern,” says David Williams, who farms 3,800 acres…

  • The US government has released a list of $ US200 billion worth of Chinese goods that will be subject to new 10% tariffs.
  • The news has not gone down well in Asian financial markets, especially in China.
  • Stock futures point to losses, steep in some instances, in European and US markets when trade resumes later today.

When your largest trading partner proposes increasing tariffs on $ US200 billion of your exports, it’s unlikely to go down well with investors.

Alas, that’s proven to the be the case today in Chinese financial markets with stocks and the Chinese yuan both sitting deep in the red midway through the session on Tuesday.

Sinking ship? Spate of resignations could mean game over for Theresa May government https://briefnews.eu/sinking-ship-spate-of-resignations-could-mean-game-over-for-theresa-may-government/ https://briefnews.eu/sinking-ship-spate-of-resignations-could-mean-game-over-for-theresa-may-government/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 23:06:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sinking-ship-spate-of-resignations-could-mean-game-over-for-theresa-may-government/ With Brussels increasingly impatient for a deal on Brexit and a NATO summit planned for Thursday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May is facing a domestic crisis of confidence — and humiliation on the world stage.

Adding to her troubles, May must play host to US President Donald Trump on Friday amid what are expected to be massive protests against his visit.

In an interview with RT, former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said he had “never known such uncertainty in all my time in politics” and called the situation within the Conservative Party “absolutely chaotic” after three cabinet ministers resigned in quick succession between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Asked if anyone could bridge the gap on Brexit thinking between the two warring sides (those who want a ‘hard’ Brexit and those who prefer a ‘soft’ Brexit), Livingstone was doubtful. “It just isn’t possible. There is no one person on either side who can unite the Tory party around this issue,” he said.

Brussels is increasingly frustrated with May’s inability to deliver any kind of certainty on Brexit, and it hasn’t been shy about showing it. On Monday, President of the European Council Donald Tusk said Brexit represented the “biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations” and warned that it was still “very far” from being resolved.

Just a few days ago, the embattled May, whose popularity has been waning in recent months, hammered out a compromise with her cabinet during an all-day meeting at Chequers — the premier’s official country residence. Media pundits were optimistic that some progress had finally been made in negotiations and hailed the outcome as a success for May — but it did not last. Many of her critics, including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, quipped that it took May’s government two years to come up with a Brexit plan — and just two days to destroy it.

May had tried to score a win with Ireland and Brussels by going for the ‘soft’ Brexit option, which they had favored, in part, as a way to prevent the reimposing of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which could put the North’s peace process and the Good Friday Agreement at risk — but Brexiteers in her cabinet didn’t seem overly concerned with the Ireland issue and pushed ahead for a harder Brexit anyway.

Chemical attack?

Amidst the chaos over Brexit and cabinet resignations, Dawn Sturgess’ death in Amesbury from a deadly nerve agent set off another round of Russia-bashing in UK media, with journalists, politicians and commentators pointing the finger at Moscow and suggesting that the country was under a Russian attack.

Before he quit, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was a no-show at Monday morning’s meeting of the government’s Cobra emergency committee — a meeting which was set up to discuss Sturgess’ death.

This begs the question: if there was real concern within the British government that the country was under attack by Russia, why would the foreign minister use that moment to resign? If the country was under attack, would Theresa May’s cabinet really be imploding at this precise moment?

The obvious answer is ‘no,’ and the reality is that Johnson is far more concerned with his own political future than he is with phony allegations of Russian attacks on Britain. Speaking to RT, journalist and political analyst Neil Clark, said that Johnson clearly wants to use the Brexit chaos to replace May and thinks now is the time to do it.

“Boris Johnson is a very, very ambitious politician. He wants to be prime minister, I don’t think there’s any secret about that — and I think he believes now is his time. He thinks, presumably that he can get enough support within the party to challenge Theresa May,” Clark said.

Less crucial, but a diplomatic headache nonetheless, is the issue of what to do if the England team reaches the World Cup final in Russia, which is looking increasingly possible.

May will be forced to make yet another difficult decision: stand firm in her government’s promise to boycott the event over the geopolitical tensions with host nation Russia, or reverse her position and send government representatives to attend. Her options aren’t enviable: abandon the England team in their hour of glory — or go back on her word and risk being seen as a hypocrite.

What happens now?

So far, May appears to be hanging on for dear life, insisting that her government is not in meltdown mode. She has promised to fight off any attempts by cabinet ministers to oust her — but it will not be easy. From various quarters, she is increasingly facing calls for a snap election, calls for a new Brexit referendum — and even calls for a new independence referendum in Scotland and a border poll to decide the fate of Northern Ireland post-Brexit.

If a snap election is called, it will be the third general election in just five years. Naturally, opposition politicians favor that option, but now it seems even some of May’s own loyalists have been coming around to the realization that there may need to be a change in leadership for any real progress to be made. There is appetite, too, among the public for a new election, with more than half of respondents in a recent poll saying an election should be called if May is ousted and replaced by one of her cabinet rivals.

It’s only Monday, but it’s clear this won’t be a good week for the UK prime minister.

  • Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes ultimately made $ 500 million for helping his Harvard roommate Mark Zuckerberg build the company in its first three years.
  • Hughes bought The New Republic magazine, a long-running liberal journal, in 2012, with hopes of making it a financially stable mainstream success.
  • After investing $ 25 million into it and losing three quarters of his staff over editorial changes, the magazine barely added any readers, and he sold it in 2016.
  • Hughes told us it taught him that ambitious goals should not require radical means to achieve them.

Chris Hughes was feeling at the top of his game in 2012. He cashed out his remaining stake in Facebook, the company he helped his Harvard roommate Mark Zuckerberg build in its early days, for a total of around $ 500 million when it went public in May. He also still had clout from his success as a digital strategist for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

And so in his new role as the owner of The New Republic magazine, which he bought for a couple million in March, he “came in guns blazing,” he told us in an interview for Business Insider’s podcast “Success! How I Did It.”

  • Millennium Tower, a luxury residential building in San Francisco, has sunk 17 inches and tilted 14 inches since it was completed in 2008.
  • Residents say they’re selling multimillion-dollar condos at a loss.
  • A two-bedroom, three-bath unit at Millennium Tower sold in December 2017 for 30% less than what it sold for in 2013.

The well-heeled residents of San Francisco’s leaning, sinking skyscraper are scrambling to sell their condos, taking losses of millions of dollars.

A two-bedroom, three-bathroom unit at Millennium Tower sold earlier this month for $ 2.99 million, but sold for $ 4.25 million in 2013.

The new owners, Rohita and Vijay Caveripakkam, both work in tech. Vijay is the founder and CEO of InFor500, a small cloud-computing company based in Silicon Valley.

Millennium Tower is a luxury residential high-rise that has sunk 17 inches and tilted 14 inches since it was completed in 2008. Though an inspection by the city showed it’s safe to occupy, the situation has sparked an exodus from the building.

The unit that most recently closed at Millennium Tower previously belonged to Robert Darby, Jr., president of Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, according to property records.

“The seller took about a 30% loss over a period where the market appreciated rapidly,” Patrick Carlisle, chief market analyst at brokerage Paragon, who wasn’t involved in the deal, told the San Francisco Business Times. “That’s got to be pretty painful.”

Carlisle estimated that the 1,664-square-foot condo would sell for between $ 5 million and $ 6 million, “if it was in any other building,” he told the Business Times.  Home prices elsewhere in San Francisco continue to soar.

millennium tower san franciscoJustin Sullivan/Getty

A year ago, a penthouse unit at Millennium Tower, previously owned by late venture capitalist Tom Perkins, sold for $ 13 million. Perkins bought the two-bedroom condo unfinished for $ 9.4 million and spent $ 9 million on renovations, which should have bumped it sales price higher.

In May, a second penthouse apartment sold for 29% less than what it sold for two years ago, the Business Times reported. The seller shaved 36% off the asking price.

The situation at Millennium Tower is likely to get worse before it gets better. Engineers have estimated the building will continue to sink at a rate of about one-inch per year.

There may be a fix in the works. A pair of engineering firms hired by developer Millennium Partners and other parties have recommended drilling 50 to 100 new piles (a type of foundation in the shape of a pillar) 200 feet down to bedrock from the building’s basement.

2 of the world’s biggest chipmakers are sinking as cryptocurrencies get smoked (NVDA, AMD) https://briefnews.eu/2-of-the-worlds-biggest-chipmakers-are-sinking-as-cryptocurrencies-get-smoked-nvda-amd/ https://briefnews.eu/2-of-the-worlds-biggest-chipmakers-are-sinking-as-cryptocurrencies-get-smoked-nvda-amd/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 18:27:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2-of-the-worlds-biggest-chipmakers-are-sinking-as-cryptocurrencies-get-smoked-nvda-amd/ Screen Shot 2017 12 22 at 10.41.49 AMMarkets Insider

  • Nvidia and AMD are two of the largest producers of graphics processing unit cards for cryptocurrency mining.
  • Both stocks took a hit Friday morning after cryptocurrencies large and small slumped.

Shares of Nvidia and AMD, two of the world’s largest chipmakers whose businesses have recently been fueled by supplying graphics cards for cryptocurrency mining, are falling Friday morning after almost every single cryptocurrency slumped. Some were down by as much as 35%.

NVDA was down 1.52% at $ 192.92 a share, while AMD was lower by 4.65% at $ 10.38.

Both companies have profited from the explosion in interest surrounding cryptocurrencies and the necessity of so-called mining, which was born alongside bitcoin in 2009.

Miners quickly figured out the type of math required to mine digital coins was made faster by introducing graphics cards initially used to improve video game graphics. Nvidia, as well as rival AMD, has profited massively from the trend.

Some analysts have already argued that the two companies’ moat was shrinking as bitcoin and ethereum begin to slow their astronomical ascent, but an RBC Capital Markets analyst said last week that there’s still room to run on smaller cryptocurrencies that aren’t as large as the big three (bitcoin, ethereum and bitcoin cash).

Unfortunately, even smaller coins were getting smacked down on Friday — and things could really go downhill for Nvidia and AMD from here.

Ethereum, which has a market cap of $ 60 billion according to coinmarketcap.com, is contemplating a shift to a “proof of stake” system instead of the industry-standard “proof of work.” This means payments on the Ethereum blockchain might soon happen via a sort of voting system rather than a race to find the answer to a complicated math problem, which is the current verification method. That could decimate the impact a GPU has on the mining prices.

Still, Wall Street remains rather bullish on both stocks. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg give NVDA and AMD prices targets of $ 224 and $ 14.60, respectively — both healthy premiums to where they are currently trading.

Sinking feeling? UK’s brand new £3.1bn aircraft carrier has sprung a leak https://briefnews.eu/sinking-feeling-uks-brand-new-3-1bn-aircraft-carrier-has-sprung-a-leak/ https://briefnews.eu/sinking-feeling-uks-brand-new-3-1bn-aircraft-carrier-has-sprung-a-leak/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 08:48:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sinking-feeling-uks-brand-new-3-1bn-aircraft-carrier-has-sprung-a-leak/

Britain’s future flagship, the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, has sprung a leak. The ship, which will eventually be loaded with a fleet of F-35 fighter jets, is reportedly taking on 200 liters of seawater every hour.

As a result, the carrier may need to be taken back into dry dock. It currently resides in Portsmouth.

The leak is thought to be caused by a faulty seal, which insiders blame on Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA), the partnership that built the vessel. The ‘significant’ fault on the £3.1 billion ($ 4.1 billion) carrier was discovered during sea trials when an issue with a propeller shaft was spotted.

Queen Elizabeth herself commissioned the warship earlier this month, in a huge ceremony in Portsmouth, also attended by Prime Minister Theresa May.

The ACA, which will foot the bill for the repairs, played down the damage. A spokesman told the Sun: “It does not prevent her from sailing again and her sea trials program will not be affected. It is normal practice for a volume of work and defect resolution to continue following vessel acceptance.”

BBC defense correspondent Jonathan Beale said the problem was “highly embarrassing” for the navy.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: “An issue with a shaft seal has been identified during HMS Queen Elizabeth’s sea trials; this is scheduled for repair while she is alongside at Portsmouth. It does not prevent her from sailing again and her sea trials programme will not be affected.”

Queen Elizabeth is 919ft long with a flight deck of four acres – space for three football pitches. When she comes into service she will have a mega 1,600 man crew and around 40 F-35B jets and Crowsnest helicopters.

However, the jets themselves, which will revolutionize air combat, have experienced a host of problems, significantly bumping up the cost of the order.

As well as the drop in the value of the pound, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is no longer able to say exactly how much it will pay for the jets, nor how many Britain will order. It is currently stated there will be a £9.1 billion order for 48 from US giant Lockheed Martin, but this is liable to change.

However, the embattled planes are costing a huge amount of cash while the MoD looks to save £30 billion ($ 40 billion) in ten years.

Aviation expert Pierre Sprey, says the aircraft have an “unbelievably abnormal” amount of issues, including computing systems that are vulnerable to cyberattack and communication issues between the planes and ships.
