In a departure from the death and destruction often caused by the phenomena, a giant sinkhole in China has revealed a stunning complex of caves for explorers to dive into for the first time.

Located amid mountains in Fengshan County, Guangxi, the 100 meter wide and 118 meter deep sinkhole reportedly became the object of scientific interest last year. Now a team of geologists and cavers has taken the next step by slinking down into the earth cavity on a single rope.

The phenomenal caverns, dubbed the Hong Kong Haitang Hall after the expedition who first pinpointed them, were explored by a team from the UK and China earlier this month. Footage of the incredible subterranean descent has now emerged, showing 19 climbers abseiling into the unknown between October 4 and 8.

Zhang Yuanhai, part of the research team attached to China’s Institute of Karst Geology, told ST Daily News that the new exploration revealed that the sinkhole depression gave way to parts of a cave 200 meters tall – more than twice the size of London’s Big Ben clock tower.

Rock rubble was evident at the floor of the hole, signalling the earlier collapse of the ground above. While 3D scans from the cave hall are still being analysed, it’s thought the volume of the tunnel could rank among the highest in the world.

“The specific data of this cave hall has not yet come out, but its huge volume is called ‘world class’. The highest point of the cave is 200 meters, and the projected area at the bottom of the cave is 77,000 square meters,” Yuanhai explained.

In one section, the hall connects to an underground river linked to the nearby Panyang River. China is home to a number of sinkholes – or tiankengs as they are called. The Xiaozhai Tiankeng, or the Heavenly Pit, in Fengjie County is one of the deepest in the world measuring around 662 meters deep.

A mystery crater that appeared at a beach in the French resort town of Nice has left residents scratching their heads. Some suggest the large, round crater is either a geyser or a volcano.

A sinkhole 5 meters in diameter and 2 meters deep, filled with brackish water, emerged on Lido beach in Nice, along the famous Promenade des Anglais, local media report. Locals were stunned by its perfect roundness. Some wondered what may have caused the phenomenon.

“It’s either a volcano or a geyser,” one Nice resident told 20minutes outlet. Others suggested the crater was from “a meteorite.”

“The tram runs beneath [the place], and the ground moves down,” another local said.

Authorities say the hole, which began forming on Wednesday, doesn’t pose any danger to public safety.

“No worries, it’s a natural phenomenon that happens four times a year. And for journalists – no, the tram did not make a detour,” Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi tweeted.

A few weeks ago, a similar sinkhole formed in the middle of a roadway in downtown Nice, near the underground tramline currently under construction, according to Paris Match.

Sinkholes are a terrifying prospect as they can form in any place at any given time.

Many people around the world have been sucked into them as the ground opens up without any warning.

Two men on a boat also found this out, as they were out sailing.

The sinkhole even drains the entire lake before they were pulled into it.

The video, which has had over 170,000 views on Imgur, shows the sinkhole opening up on the lake in Brazil as the tiny rowboat is pulled towards it.

The entire lake is emptied, with many fish appearing to be in distress around them.

However, the two men are then pulled into it as they attempt to avoid it before they jump out onto the boggy land.

They then appear to be stranded in the middle whilst the rest of the ground is sucked into it, before being rescued later according to reports.

Viewers on Imgur were confused why they waited so long to escape.

One questioned: “I’d like to think I’d be in a bigger hurry to exit that boat then these two.”

Another user asked: “They don’t look nearly as freaked out as they should be, drowning in a mud hole is less sexy than it sounds.”

Others found it much funnier, writing: “Mother Earth got the munchies.”

Man is not made to be on the water, so it can be terrifying when caught in unknown weather conditions.

One sailor was filming when he was out at sea only to nearly be hit by lightning.

The video captured the moment the purple bolt struck the boat. 

Luckily no one was hurt.

Eleven homes have been evacuated due to a sinkhole that destroyed two homes in Pasco County, Florida. More homes may be in severe danger as the natural phenomenon inches closer to a nearby lake.

“I ask that everybody out there please pray for the people in this community right now because as they go to bed tonight, I don’t know if they will be able to sleep,” Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said, WFLA reported.

Almost a dozen more homes in the immediate area in the town of Land O’ Lakes are also in danger of being harmed by the sinkhole, as the depressed plot of land is said to be almost 250 feet (76.2 meters) in diameter and 50 feet (15.24m) deep. No injuries have been reported.

The event also contributed to a loss of power for 100 homes in the area, according to ABC News.

As of Friday evening, the situation has not improved and officials are taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of people in the area.

Boating has been temporarily suspended at a lake nearby, and officials have notified residents living in between the sinkhole and the lake to evacuate, due to concerns that “the entire ground can collapse at any second,” ABC News reported.

Pasco officials said at a news conference Friday afternoon that the possibility of a third home being swallowed by the hole is high because the ground close to the sinkhole is very soft. Kevin Guthrie, Pasco County Assistant County Administrator, said, it has been almost 30 years since his colleagues have seen a sinkhole this big, WFLA reported.

On Friday at 7:21 am, the 911 service received a call detailing a boat that was falling into a hole. About 15 minutes later, firefighters arrived, but were too late, as the boat had already been submerged in the sinkhole. At this point, the hole was moving toward the house. Firefighters arrived in time to rescue two dogs in the home.

After an hour had elapsed, part of the neighboring home also fell into the ground. Residents were in that home, but they managed to get out safely. That particular home had recently been repaired due to damage from a previous sinkhole, according to ABC News.

A battalion chief on the scene on Friday expressed to reporters the severity of the situation.

“It’s an active sinkhole, so we don’t know how big it’s going to get yet,” he explained. “We’re just evacuating homes and making sure that everybody is safe,” the chief told reporters. He also claimed that geologists were heading over to the scene of the sinkhole to “give us a definitive number on how big we need to evacuate,” ABC News reported.

This is not the first time a home in this area has had problems with a sinkhole.

The neighboring house that fell into the hole had been repaired in the past due to problems regarding a sinkhole. That home was resold in 2015 after the repairs were finished and labeled as a “repaired” home. At this time, authorities do not know if the homes that were hit by the sinkhole are insured for this kind of disaster, according to WFLA.

The video shows terrified locals walking around the perimeter of the massive crater.

It appeared in the middle of a field in Turkey’s Konya Province in the south of the country.

People in the area were baffled and scared by the suddenly appearing sinkhole, which measured 10m wide and 90m deep.

The phenomenon first appeared in May 2015, but the video recently resurfaced on image sharing site Imgur.

The crater formed in the space of just 24 hours, though thankfully no one was hurt.

It wasn’t the only sinkhole to appear in the area.

Another eight craters opened up around the town of Karapinar in just three months.

Many of these were on or near agricultural land, and it was thought that they were caused by limestone dissolving underground.

“I don’t know what to do. We alerted the authorities,” farmer Mustafa Dirican told website Radikal at the time. 

“They sent experts and drilled the ground to study it. That is all they’ve done, and the sinkholes still appear.” 

Another farmer said that he was scared of working because a sinkhole could open up beneath him – but that he and others didn’t have much choice.

Local geology professor Professor Fethullah Arik told Radikal that heavy rain was causing the craters. “Predicting when and where they will occur isn’t possible,” he said, adding that there were more than 200 sinkholes in the area.

This comes after Express.co.uk reported on a video of Lake Berryessa in California that appeared to show a portal opening up into another dimension – but there was a perfectly logical explanation.

The video shows the lake with water spiralling down a huge hole. But don’t get too excited –  in reality, it’s simply a giant drain called a spillway to divert excess water.

Lake Berryessa in California, USA, can hold around 521 billion gallons of water – any more than that, and the excess begins to be drained off through the spillway.

This year, for the first time in a decade, it rained so much in January and February that the lake reached capacity.

The bodies of some 4,000 Islamic State victims have been buried in the Khasfa sinkhole in Iraq’s desert, making it the country’s largest mass grave, according to locals, police, and activists, as cited by The Telegraph.

The sinkhole is located near the Baghdad-Mosul highway, only eight kilometers from Mosul, the daily reports.

Witnesses and police, as well as human rights organizations, say that Islamic State (IS, Daesh, formerly ISIS/ISIL) murdered and dumped the bodies of thousands of Iraqi troops into the sinkhole after they captured Mosul three years ago.

The majority were shot and thrown into the pit, locals said.

“Daesh would drive the victims to Khasfa in convoys of minibuses, trucks and pickups. The men had their hands bound and their eyes blindfolded. They were taken to the sinkhole and shot in the back of the head,” 40-year-old local villager Mahmoud told The Daily Telegraph.

The terrorist killers were masked, the witness added.

Earlier this week, the Telegraph reportedly went to the Khasfa sinkhole following the recapture of the western half of Mosul by Iraqi troops.

The city has been under IS control since 2014, and the offensive to retake it began in October.

On Friday, Iraqi forces seized the city’s airport.

Over the past years, IS is believed to have conducted a campaign to hunt down and murder policemen and soldiers and toss them into mass graves in the desert.

Human Rights Watch reported last November that IS had executed at least 300 policemen and buried them in a mass grave some 30 kilometers from Mosul.

Another mass grave containing 100 beheaded bodies was found earlier that month in a school just outside of Mosul.
