A Simple Rule Made Sure Buster Keaton Could Always Throw In Some Improv https://briefnews.eu/a-simple-rule-made-sure-buster-keaton-could-always-throw-in-some-improv/ https://briefnews.eu/a-simple-rule-made-sure-buster-keaton-could-always-throw-in-some-improv/#respond Sun, 04 Sep 2022 21:10:22 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-simple-rule-made-sure-buster-keaton-could-always-throw-in-some-improv/

Buster Keaton was one of the biggest names in early cinema, famous for his physical comedy. He thrived on an ability to improvise these gags; Keaton grew up as a vaudeville performer, and spent his childhood improvising slapstick routines with his father onstage. As a Hollywood filmmaker, Keaton continued to rely on improvisation for his comedy — but this required him to follow one simple rule.

Keaton got his start as an entertainer traveling in a company alongside Harry Houdini. It was here that he learned to improvise fluidly and hilariously. His first time in front of a camera was in Fatty Arbuckle’s “The Butcher Boy.” “[Arbuckle] only had to turn me loose in the set and I’d have material in two minutes, because I’d been doing it all my life,” Keaton explained (via A Hard Act to Follow).

When it came to his own films, Keaton made sure there was space for on-the-spot creative decisions: “Well as a rule, oh about 50 percent you have in your mind before you start the picture, and the rest you develop as you’re making it,” Keaton told Studs Turkel. “We never even thought of writing a script, we didn’t need to.”

Silent film stars often left lots of room for improvisation in their work — in fact, they would often approach a film with only the beginning and end in mind. As far as Keaton and his counterparts were concerned, the path from point A to point B was half of the journey. “When we get the start and the finish, we’ve got it, because … the middle we can always take care of. That’s easy.”

There Was No Script To Follow

Keaton favored extreme gags over narratives, which is why he chose to make “Sherlock Jr.” “I laid out a few of these tricks, some of the tricks I knew from the stage,” he recalled (via A Hard Act to Follow). But he realized he couldn’t “do it and tell a legitimate story because they’re illusions … it’s got to come in a dream.” He chose the premise of a projectionist that falls asleep on the job so he could totally suspend reality. Keaton was all about maximizing his creative freedom.

Through creative storytelling, Keaton was able to improvise heavily for many years. Silent cinema left things so open-ended that the Hollywood legend would not even begin to work with a script until “The Cameraman” in 1929. However, when MGM and other studios moved exclusively into talking pictures, cinema changed forever. “New York stage directors, New York writers, dialogue writers, and the musicians union all moved to Hollywood,” Keaton recounted to CBC. The new writers brought with them a new style of writing, one that Stone Face described as “joke-happy.” “They don’t look for the action, they’re looking for funny things to say,” he lamented.

Keaton and the other kings of physical comedy struggled when silent films fell out of fashion — the film industry had new priorities. Keaton would go on to make several sound films, including the 1931 hit “Sidewalks of New York” (which was actually the actor’s most commercially successful film). Still, the actor lost the creative freedom he had enjoyed as a silent film director, including the freedom to improvise.

Mike Judge Has A Simple Formula For Writing A Good King Of The Hill Script https://briefnews.eu/mike-judge-has-a-simple-formula-for-writing-a-good-king-of-the-hill-script/ https://briefnews.eu/mike-judge-has-a-simple-formula-for-writing-a-good-king-of-the-hill-script/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 01:17:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/mike-judge-has-a-simple-formula-for-writing-a-good-king-of-the-hill-script/

Now I’m not saying that the absence of “King of the Hill” is what got us in this mess, but since the show ended in 2010, America seems to have lost its collective mind. From Karens to Donalds and all the QAnon in between, what we need right now is for Hank Hill to shed a little light on the absurdity of our present day.

The satirical animated series, which ran from 1997 to 2010, examined a plethora of social issues through the perspective of small-town Texas rednecks. America’s favorite propane and propane accessory salesman Hank Hill was at the center of it all, like a well-intentioned Archie Bunker.

Hank was a principled, old-school conservative doing his best to adjust to a changing society. The show’s plots would place him in some of the most preposterous situations one could imagine. And he mostly handled it all with dignity. The dignity of, say, Lady Bird Johnson.

And though the formula for the animated series might be simple, it may have meant more to viewers than its creators ever realized.

Even In Texas, Hank Was A Fish Out Of Water

Mike Judge’s “King of the Hill” is like comfort food. When you turn it on, you know exactly what you’re going to get, and you know it’s going to make you feel good. Like a propane grill that you know is going to light every time and cook evenly.

The show made its fair share of social statements, but to a lesser degree than its animated contemporaries like “South Park” or “Family Guy.” Rather than biting satire, Judge used what has worked for live-action sitcoms for decades — the fish-out-of-water trope and observational comedy. Judge explained his simple formula to IGN, saying, “It’s usually putting Hank up against something really annoying and ridiculous in the modern world and just making it as annoying and ridiculous as possible.”

It helped that Hank was a conservative pragmatist during an era when society began to grow more progressive. In one episode, Hank’s affinity for outdated “traditional values” made it difficult to deal with a “new age” parenting style. Judge took what “new age” parenting might normally look like and made it as absurd as possible.

It’s a surprisingly simple formula for a show that ran for 13 seasons. But the show also used humor to address complex issues that are often difficult for people to talk about. Although there was nothing groundbreaking about the show’s formula, the impact of “King of the Hill” has been extensive.

‘The Last Bipartisan TV Comedy’

The premise for “King of the Hill” was rooted in reality, inspired by real people surrounding Judge in his north Dallas neighborhood. “I just had this image of just four guys with beers standing out in front of the fence, kind of like I used to see when I’d look out my kitchen window,” Judge said. “And I just drew them all saying, ‘Yep, yep, yep.'”

Despite Hank Hill’s conservative bent, the show mostly stayed away from explicit political messages. The legacy of “King of the Hill” isn’t that it avoided politics, but rather that it united viewers amid a rapidly growing political divide. The Atlantic called the show “the last bipartisan TV comedy,” noting that its characters emphasized humanity in a changing world. While the situations Hank Hill faced were absurd, his altruistic response to them made the show a comfort for us all.

How would “King of the Hill” play today, where every topic seems to get absorbed into part of a culture war? We might find out. According to ComicBook.com, Mike Judge and “King of the Hill” co-creator Greg Daniels have formed a new animation company, Bandera Entertainment. One of their projects in development is a “King of the Hill” revival. The show is slated to take place 15 years after the original series ended. In response, I think we can all agree in saying, “Yep, yep, yep.”

However, others disagreed: “@BBCBreakfast @RobertJenrick very clear and succinct replies from the Mp. Usual aggression from Charlie most unhelpful and rude.”

“For goodness sake Charlie, stop the aggressive *gotcha* closed questions…Covid Marshalls …& LISTEN to the rational answer!” Another fumed.

While one added: “@BBCBreakfast cringeworthy Charlie this morning asking the same repetitive questions that someone cant and won’t answer – pointless.”

Are Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan Bringing Back The Simple Life? https://briefnews.eu/are-paris-hilton-and-lindsay-lohan-bringing-back-the-simple-life/ https://briefnews.eu/are-paris-hilton-and-lindsay-lohan-bringing-back-the-simple-life/#respond Tue, 25 Jun 2019 20:09:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-paris-hilton-and-lindsay-lohan-bringing-back-the-simple-life/

The Twitterverse let out a collective gasp on Tuesday following some cryptic posts that suggested longtime frenemies Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are teaming up to revive The Simple Life.

“Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer,” read one tweet from the show’s official account, which was accompanied by a throwback photo of the presumed co-stars (seen above). Another tweet included photos of the women’s old-school bedazzled flip phones, while a third was simply of two female emojis — one blonde and one redhead. (Important note: Though this Simple Life account does not currently appear to be verified, it boasted a checkmark when the aforementioned tweets were posted. Click here for proof.)

The Simple Life, which aired on Fox (2003–2005) and E! (2006–2007) for a combined total of five seasons, followed Hilton and Nicole Richie as they journeyed into America’s heartland to experience (and arguably destroy) the lives of everyday folk. Tuesday’s posts made no mention of Richie, however, leading fans to assume that Lohan would serve as her replacement.

And Lohan is no stranger to reality television. Earlier this year, MTV debuted Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club, which chronicled the management and growth of Lohan Beach Club Mykonos. Unfortunately, the club is now permanently closed, eliminating the need for a second season.

“We have nothing to confirm at this time,” a rep for 20th Television tells TVLine.

Hand luggage: Always pack this one simple item in your bag to help you sleep on a plane https://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-simple-item-in-your-bag-to-help-you-sleep-on-a-plane/ https://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-simple-item-in-your-bag-to-help-you-sleep-on-a-plane/#respond Thu, 10 Jan 2019 08:08:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hand-luggage-always-pack-this-one-simple-item-in-your-bag-to-help-you-sleep-on-a-plane/

Flights for many plane passengers are a chance to catch up on sleep ahead of a holiday. But with so many noises and distractions going on in the cabin, slumber can often be hard to come by. However, by packing one simple thing in your hand luggage you might be able to fall asleep more easily. Staying warm helps people go to sleep – but this is often hard to achieve in an aircraft.

Consequently, it can be a good idea to pack a pair of extra cosy socks to help keep you warm.

“With the harsh air-conditioning on planes, it can sometimes be difficult to stay warm during your flight, so it’s important to pack some comfy and thick socks in your hand-luggage,” said sleep expert Neil Robinson from bed brand Sealy UK.

“Having warm feet helps you to drift off faster, as well as have a less restless sleep,” he added.

For the full, high-quality sleep experience, it’s worth packing two other items in your hand luggage, too.

Firstly, Neil recommends bringing an eye mask. It may not be the most sociable move if travelling with others but it will help block out unnecessary light.

“Planes are full of bright lights – from the overhead reading lights to the blue light emitted by the TV screens – which can have a negative impact on our slumber,” explained Neil.

“When we witness a light form, it stimulates a nerve pathway from the eye to the brain this stops us from feeling tired, making it harder to drift off.

“Wearing an eye mask will help to block out these lights and help you to fall asleep and stay asleep.”

Secondly, passengers are advised to pack ear plugs to fully switch off from the plane’s distractions.

“With everything from screaming children, pilot announcements and coughing passengers, there are lots of noises that can keep you from getting that all-important shut-eye,” said Neil.

“Ear plugs can help to muffle this and turn it into soothing ‘white noise.'”

Neil also recommends steering clear of any technology before you try and get some sleep.

He explained: “While it may be tempting to watch a film or read on your tablet during the flight, the blue light emitted from the screens impacts our levels of melatonin, the sleep-inducing hormone.

“By avoiding technology for a minimum of 30 minutes before you’re planning to get some kip, you can help ensure a better quality sleep.”

A flight attendant has also recommended bringing a pen or pencil in your hand luggage for a flight.

She told Readers Digest: “If you’re travelling overseas, do yourself a favour and bring a pen. You would not believe how many people travel without one, and you need one to fill out the immigration forms. I carry some, but I can’t carry 200.”

People who forget to pack one could find themselves frantically asking other passengers or delayed at the airport when they haven’t filled in their form.

The 7 Best Movies to Buy or Stream This Week: ‘Roma,’ ‘A Simple Favor’ https://briefnews.eu/the-7-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-roma-a-simple-favor/ https://briefnews.eu/the-7-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-roma-a-simple-favor/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 17:22:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-7-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-roma-a-simple-favor/ One of the most talked-about movies of the year — and a big swing for awards season respectability — landed on Netflix Friday, so we’re recommending it again, along with a goofy but enjoyable early-fall thriller that’s new on disc. And the catalogue titles this week are rich and varied, from Criterion classics to Spielberg’s Oscar winner to lowbrow delights. Let’s dig in:

ON NETFLIX

Roma: Alfonso Cuarón’s latest does so many things at once, none at the expense of the other, that it’s kind of a miracle. Set in Mexico in the early 1970s — and influenced by his own childhood memories — it’s an Y Tu Mamá También-style examination of the country’s class and political struggles as seen through a distinctively personal lens, the intermingled stories of two women abandoned by irresponsible men and rising to the occasion. As ever, the patience and control of the filmmaking is astonishing, and his signature long takes are more felt than seen; they don’t call attention to themselves anymore, and don’t need to. The takeaway is not visual pyrotechnics, but emotion; the empathy and humanity of his work, always present, is this time downright overwhelming.

ON 4K / BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

A Simple Favor: Ultimately, Paul Feig just might not’ve been the right director for this affectionate throwback to ‘90s erotic thrillers — he never quite gets the tonal balance right, and it swings far too goofy by the end. But there’s a lot to like here, primarily the work of leads Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, who position themselves well as polar opposites (type-A/laid-back, mousy/sexy) and end up blurring those lines. Kendrick plays a variety of notes well, particularly as she learns to be assertive and tries being Nancy Drew, while there’s something utterly bewitching about the way Lively calls Kendrick “baby” and tells her she’s sexy. It’s not a great movie, but it’s gonna play great on TNT in a couple of years. (Includes audio commentaries, featurettes, gag reel, and deleted scenes.)

ON 4K / BLU-RAY

Schindler’s List: The “movie we need right now” line has been attached to a fair amount of dubious art over the past two years, but Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Best Picture winner (newly re-mastered and re-released for its 25th anniversary) certainly earns the claim. The passage of time has softened some of the legitimate criticisms — this viewer still takes issue with the girl in the pink coat, and there she is, right on the Blu-ray cover — but it’s also rightfully bolstered the power of its performances, particularly the trio (Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and then-unknown Ralph Fiennes) at its center. (Includes featurettes and Voices from the List documentary.)

ON BLU-RAY

Panique: The laughs land and then sting in this 1946 French comedy/drama from director Julien Duvivier, new to the Criterion Collection, in which an intimate community is rocked by the revelation of a murderer in their midst. It puts the entire town on edge, understandably, as worry gives way to paranoia, rumors, and accusations. Duvivier manifests this mounting panic via inventive photography (the Dutch angles and subjective camera are especially striking), and the flashes of wicked humor and sly sensuality serve as a fine diversion on the way to a powerfully bleak conclusion. (Includes featurettes, interviews, and trailer.)

Sawdust and Tinsel: This 1953 Ingmar Bergman effort — included in Criterion’s recent Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema box set, now available as a stand-alone Blu-ray — creates a tricky mixture of mirth and dread, of despair just out of the eyeline of joy. Bergman’s story concerns a ram-shackle, poverty-striken traveling circus, but his focus is on the washed-up proprietor, his unhappy partner, and their melancholy explorations of life away from each other during one particularly dire tour stop. It’s told with an intimacy that’s often uncomfortable, physically and psychologically (nothing’s more devastating than desperate honesty), yet most of its truths are found in the faces of its leads — particularly the looks of weary resignation they share before strolling off together, to their next nowhere destination. What a brilliant, insightful work. (Includes audio commentary and Bergman introduction.)

The Thing from Another World: This 1951 sci-fi/horror classic (newly given the Blu-ray bump by Warner Archive) was sort of the Poltergeist of its time — in that there have been arguments for years over whether it was directed by its credited director, Christian Nyby, or his better-known and beloved producer, Howard Hawks. And it’s not hard to see where the Hawks people are coming from; its crew-of-guys-on-a-base set-up is reminiscent of his Only Angels Have Wings, while the rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue (particularly in the early scenes) were one of Hawks’ trademarks. Whoever is responsible, this is a firecracker of a scary alien movie (sharply remade by John Carpenter in 1982), evocatively and effectively crafted (the monster is wisely kept hidden through much of the picture), featuring a marvelously apocalyptic Dimitri Tiomkin score.

Bloody Birthday: So here’s a nasty little item from 1981, newly restored by Arrow Video, that is in many ways a typical slasher movie of the era — basically it’s end to end murders, interrupted by occasional leering at naked teenage flesh. But there’s something genuinely disturbing about this story of three 10-year-old kids, born under the same eclipse, who are absolutely ruthless psychopaths; director Ed Hunt works in a key of relentless nihilism that is undeniably effective. It’s so low budget, they couldn’t even afford a “Happy Birthday to You” sing-along at the big birthday party, but the nondescript look and cheapo production design somehow render it creepier. It feels homemade, somehow, which makes the whole thing even more unsettling. (Includes audio commentary, featurettes, interviews, and trailers.)
