Barcelona plot FIVE signings in January including Arsenal and Schalke stars https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-plot-five-signings-in-january-including-arsenal-and-schalke-stars/ https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-plot-five-signings-in-january-including-arsenal-and-schalke-stars/#respond Tue, 26 Dec 2017 20:55:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barcelona-plot-five-signings-in-january-including-arsenal-and-schalke-stars/

Barcelona are desperate to add to their squad next month after failing to do much business in the summer.

The club reinvested the £200million earned from selling Neymar to PSG by signing Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele.

But the £136m arrival has been out inured for four months and manager Ernesto Valverde is ready to bring in new recruits.

The boss is said to want to bolster his midfield, with Aleix Vidal, Gerard Deulofeu and Arda Turan set to leave.

Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets may also soon need replacing.

And Spanish newspaper Marca claim FIVE players are on Valverde’s wish list.

Top of the pile is Arsenal star Ozil, who has hit a good spell of form at just the right time.

Ozil can leave Arsenal for free next summer as his contract is due to expire – and is able to agree terms with other clubs as early at January 1.

However, Barca are said to be hopeful of signing Ozil from Arsenal in the New Year, even if that means stumping up a nominal transfer fee.

Barca claim Nabil Fekir and Aleksandr Golovin are also on Barcelona’s shopping list.

And Schalke’s star duo Max Meyer and Leon Goretzka are being monitored as well.

Express Sport understands Manchester United are interested in Ozil, while Goretzka – who is also out of contract in the summer – has been linked with a wealth of clubs.

Arsenal would far likely rather sell Ozil to Barca rather than risk him leaving for United.

And Schalke have already supposedly offered Goretzka a massive pay rise to stay in Germany, but to no avail.

  • The Atlanta Braves were docked 12 players and a draft pick for violating MLB’s international prospect signing rules.
  • The Braves had reportedly been signing players by exceeding their bonus pool.
  • Former GM John Coppolella has been barred for life.

The Atlanta Braves have reportedly been hammered by MLB for violating the rules for signing international prospects.

An investigation by MLB concluded that the Braves exceeded their bonus pool money to sign international prospects by offering more money outside of the signing bonuses.

As a result, 12 players, nine of whom the Braves signed last year and three signed this year, will become free agents and the Braves will lose a third-round pick this year. Former GM John Coppolella, who lost his job amid the investigation, has been barred for life, while former scout Gordon Blakely will be suspended for one year. Jon Hart, who took over as president of baseball operations in October, resigned last week.

The punishment was first reported by Yahoo’s Jeff Passan and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred later released a statement confirming it.

According to Passan, Atlanta will also be limited to offering prospects $ 10,000 in the 2019-20 signing period.

Most in the MLB world say the loss of vaunted prospect Kevin Maitan will hurt the Braves the most. Maitan is a switch-hitting shortstop that Passan describes as one of the most valued prospects from Latin America in the last decade.

The Braves have been praised for building one of the best farm systems in MLB, but the rebuilding effort took a hit with the penalties handed down by MLB.

Liverpool news: Emile Heskey discusses five signings including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-emile-heskey-discusses-five-signings-including-pierre-emerick-aubameyang/ https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-emile-heskey-discusses-five-signings-including-pierre-emerick-aubameyang/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 09:54:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-emile-heskey-discusses-five-signings-including-pierre-emerick-aubameyang/

The former Anfield star thinks his old club are as many as five players short of mounting a title tilt.

Heskey has identified Borussia Dortmund striker Aubameyang as the player Jurgen Klopp should line up – alongside other top stars to transform the spine of his squad.

Heskey said: “Liverpool would need to do a lot in the transfer market win the Premier League. It will take a sustained effort in numerous transfer windows to make the necessary signings – it’s not a quick fix.

“I think Liverpool would need to sign four or five players, with the priority being to improve the defence and the goalkeeper.

“The club would also need to sign a defensive midfielder, I still don’t think they’ve replaced Dietmar Hamann and he left over a decade ago. Lucas played there for a while and did well, but it has been a struggle and I don’t think they’ve got it right.

“In terms of strikers, Liverpool should sign Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang. That signing would make a real statement to both the fans and the rest of the Premier League that we mean business.

“Liverpool need to sign an out and out striker who will play regularly and who we can depend on to score those decisive goals.

“I thought Daniel Sturridge could have been that, but he struggles with injuries and Klopp doesn’t pick him even when he’s fit.

“Roberto Firmino can play up front but he’s not an out and out striker and we can’t expect him to fire us to the title.”

Liverpool have got off to a shaky start to their Premier League campaign and Heskey is worried about the side’s consistency.

He told sportingbet.com: “Inconsistency will be any team’s downfall.

“Liverpool are already seven points adrift and are at risk of losing further ground because the other top teams are winning games even when they’re not playing particularly well.

“We can’t afford to fall further behind even at this stage of the season because the top teams very rarely drop points.”

Chelsea transfer news: Three signings could be done before 11pm deadline https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-transfer-news-three-signings-could-be-done-before-11pm-deadline/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-transfer-news-three-signings-could-be-done-before-11pm-deadline/#respond Thu, 31 Aug 2017 18:50:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-transfer-news-three-signings-could-be-done-before-11pm-deadline/

The Blues want to sign Davide Zappacosta and a £25million deal has been agreed.

They want Danny Drinkwater too, talks are ongoing over Riyad Mahrez while Fernando Llorente is another potential option.

However, they could be beaten to the Swansea striker by Tottenham

Telegraph journalist Matt Law tweeted: “I believe Chelsea will sign Zappacosta and Drinkwater and are trying on a third, but, as things stands, Spurs favourites to get Llorente.”

Chelsea striker Diego Costa could still move to Spain – although the transfer window runs for another day out there.

The only deal they’ve done so far is for central defender Kyle Jameson to joined West Brom.

The 18-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year contract, with a further one-year option, and he will form part of Albion’s development squad.

Jameson has already featured twice for James Shan’s Under-23 group in games against Newcastle and Wolves.

“I’m delighted. I did a bit of research and this is a wonderful club,” he told West Brom’s official website.

“I’ve already played a couple of games and enjoyed it. Once we start working together as a team then we’ll start winning matches.”

Jose Mourinho rules out more Man Utd signings due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrival https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-rules-out-more-man-utd-signings-due-to-zlatan-ibrahimovic-arrival/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-rules-out-more-man-utd-signings-due-to-zlatan-ibrahimovic-arrival/#respond Sat, 26 Aug 2017 19:29:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-rules-out-more-man-utd-signings-due-to-zlatan-ibrahimovic-arrival/

Manchester United re-signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic this week on a deal until the end of the season.

The Swede was instrumental for the Red Devils last term and is expected to be available for selection in January.

And Jose Mourinho has claimed the return of the 35-year-old will mean United will not need to go shopping in the winter transfer market.

“He will be back in January,” Mourinho said after the 2-0 win over Leicester.

“When the market is open and people are spending money we don’t.

“But we get a player who was fundamental for us last season.

“He comes to give us extra quality in the second half of the season.”

But United might not need the reinforcement if they continue their fine form deep into the campaign.

The Red Devils made it three wins from three today with a 2-0 victory over Leicester.

And Mourinho admitted he is delighted to see his team finishing off sides, rather than being held to draws like last season.

“We can look into perspective, last season we won against Leicester at home so that doesn’t make a difference but we had too many draws at home last season,” he said.

“The difference is the quality of our football, we’re playing better today and if we hadn’t won this match I wouldn’t have anyone to blame.

“The team is playing very well and I’m very confident. We are comfortable on the ball and dangerous on the counter attack.

“But nine points after three matches is nothing different for us because we did that last season.”

Chelsea EXCLUSIVE: Antonio Conte planning £200m spree for FIVE new signings https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-exclusive-antonio-conte-planning-200m-spree-for-five-new-signings/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-exclusive-antonio-conte-planning-200m-spree-for-five-new-signings/#respond Sun, 20 Aug 2017 03:19:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-exclusive-antonio-conte-planning-200m-spree-for-five-new-signings/

Conte has got his sights on five new signings as he looks to mount a successful defence of the Premier League crown they won in his first season in charge.

The fiery Italian takes his side to Wembley today to face Spurs after they lost their opening game against Burnley at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Conte has got his sights on the Southampton defensive trio Virgil van Dijk, Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand – who started his career at Stamford Bridge.

The trio could cost as much as £150 million but face competition from Liverpool for van Dijk and Bertrand while Soares is believed to also interest Spurs.

Saints have maintained that none of them are for sale but that is unlikely to put off Conte who wants to mount a challenge for the Champions League.

Chelsea are also preparing to increase their offer for Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater to £25 million after their first bid of £20 million was rejected.

The Foxes are believed to want around £30 million for the 27 year-old but The Blues are trying to reach a compromise.

England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still a target as he enters into the final year of his Arsenal contract.

Conte knows that he needs to increase the number of home grown players in his first team squad which is why he wont let Arsenal’s reluctance to sell put him off.

Meanwhile, want away striker Diego Costa has opened the door for a loan move away from Chelsea until Christmas claiming that he needs to play.

AC Milan are interested in signing the Spaniard until he can complete a move to Atletico Madrid in the New Year when a transfer ban ends.

While Spanish clubs Deportivo La Coruna and Real Betis are also interested in taking him on loan before the transfer window closes

Costa is still in Brazil after failing to report back for pre training with Chelsea after Antonio Conte told him that he didn’t feature in his plans.

The 28 year-old has been engaged in a war of words with his employers who fined him around £300,000 during his stand off.

That is likely to be increased even further if he continues to refuse to return to this country so his fitness can be assed.

Costa has revealed that he has started training again on his own but has said that  he isn’t planning to return to somewhere he isn’t wanted

“We’re still negotiating, they have to decide what’s going to happen to me. I have two years of contract with them.

“I hope it is resolved as soon as possible because I need to play. I just will not stay in a place where they do not want me,” he said.

Barcelona crisis: No Neymar, Messi frustrated and poor signings ahead of Real Madrid clash https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-crisis-no-neymar-messi-frustrated-and-poor-signings-ahead-of-real-madrid-clash/ https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-crisis-no-neymar-messi-frustrated-and-poor-signings-ahead-of-real-madrid-clash/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2017 16:45:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barcelona-crisis-no-neymar-messi-frustrated-and-poor-signings-ahead-of-real-madrid-clash/

Things at Barcelona were meant to be bad under Luis Enrique last season – before Real Madrid scooped the double.

But life under Ernesto Valverde is already off a rocky start, leading to calls the La Liga giants are suffering a crisis.

Even before Neymar sealed a £198million move to Paris Saint-Germain, the signs were ominous.

Valverde himself is a relatively unknown quantity, one who fared well at Athletic Bilbao but is now facing the biggest challenge of his career.

Talk in Spain was, initially, all about Jorge Sampoali. The Argentine was said to be the one Lionel Messi wanted appointed and, given his exploits at Sevilla last season, it was clear to see why.

They finished fourth last term, squandering third only when doubts over Sampoali’s future arose. But instead of Barcelona, he took the reins of the Argentina national side instead.

Would he have been able to stop Neymar jumping ship? Perhaps.

His departure has stunned the footballing world but those who follow Spanish football knew a transfer could have been on the cards. The signs were there last season as Barcelona lost out on the title to Real.

Manchester United tried to sign him a year ago with his father confirming their interest. But PSG emerged as frontrunners quickly after he signed a new contract due to their determination to land him at all costs.

Last year, PSG put a rather tempting offer on the table. A private plane and a hotel chain in his name were used as bait to try and convince him to leave the Nou Camp.

And the minute Real won two trophies his exit was sealed. Neymar may have been part of a formidable attacking trio also consisting of Messi and Luis Suarez but the fact remains Real won the Champions League three times during that spell.

For a man who harbours hopes of winning the Ballon d’Or, it was a bitter blow. And Barcelona, for all their glittering history, simply did not offer a guarantee of success. You would think PSG – despite losing out on the Ligue 1 title to Monaco last season – can.

Barcelona’s current crisis is also down to their baffling transfer business. Not just this summer, but in the years since Pep Guardiola walked away.

Take last summer under Enrique for instance. There was talk that Paul Pogba might join from Juventus, but Barcelona never looked like pulling that off.

Instead, they splurged £30million on Andre Gomes, a player who looked out of his depth last season. Lucas Digne and Paco Alcacer also toiled, while they failed to sufficiently fill the void left by Dani Alves’ departure.

Before that, alarm bells had been ringing. Jeremy Mathieu ranks among the worst signings in the club’s history, Douglas was terrible, Thomas Vermaelen just baffling and Arda Turan unnecessary.

Reports in Spain are saying Messi is even frustrated with their current business.

Barcelona have signed Paulinho for £36.5m. A player whose stock his risen again over in China but, two years ago, was voted as Tottenham’s worst-ever player back in March.

In addition to that, the Catalan giants are eying swoops for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele.

But Messi thinks neither player is capable of replacing Neymar. And, should Real win tonight, Barcelona’s crisis is likely to continue.

HERNAN CRESPO EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd for title, Chelsea need signings, Coutinho to Barcelona https://briefnews.eu/hernan-crespo-exclusive-man-utd-for-title-chelsea-need-signings-coutinho-to-barcelona/ https://briefnews.eu/hernan-crespo-exclusive-man-utd-for-title-chelsea-need-signings-coutinho-to-barcelona/#respond Sat, 12 Aug 2017 07:20:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hernan-crespo-exclusive-man-utd-for-title-chelsea-need-signings-coutinho-to-barcelona/

The former Premier League striker, who became the most expensive player in world football when he moved to Lazio in 2000, believes Chelsea will pay the price for missing out on Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Crespo thinks the failed deal cost them the title and it leaves them desperately needing players with their first game against Burnley just hours away.

The Argentine has called on Chelsea to sign three more – and he thinks there’s a small chance that Inter’s Ivan Perisic could be one of them.

Crespo, speaking in collaboration with Betstars, said: “It’s possible he [Perisic] joins Chelsea – but he plays on the left and on the left you have Eden Hazard, Perisic and Marcos Alonso.

“Maybe he could come in through the middle or to the right. Perisic is a good player but I don’t know if Inter wants to sell. I think ‘no’ but it depends on money. It’s always the same. It depends on money.

“If you put a lot of money down, even Inter will sell him, but they don’t want to sell him.

“Romelu Lukaku is the one but that didn’t happen. It’s a weird situation to understand Antonio Conte’s need to change or follow him in the next 20 days.

“He needs signings if he wants to repeat and win the league. He did a great job last year but if you want to keep going and win you need to put in two or three pieces.

“Where? It depends on Conte. They could do with another striker, for sure. It’s true that Alvaro Morata is good but he’s a different player to Diego Costa.

“It’s not only a striker but Nemanja Matic going to Manchester United needs them needing another centre-midfielder – and a centre-back.”

As for Lukaku, Crespo purred: “I think Lukaku is the best but at the same time it was impossible to change.

“If we want to win the league you need this kind of striker.”

But the Argentine has an answer. He thinks Chelsea’s solution could be a move for Tottenham’s Harry Kane – albeit next summer, not now.

Crespo said: “Harry Kane is a great striker but he’s just like Tottenham. You need to win. If you win you are a great striker, you need to win. He’s demonstrated he’s very important.

“Kane needs to help the team win trophies and to do it with Tottenham would be great. He tried to do it last year and didn’t. If it doesn’t happen, Harry Kane must change. He must.

“He must move to win, to a big team, to Chelsea, although Chelsea would be difficult.

“Maybe Manchester City, why not? Manchester United after signing Romelu Lukaku would be difficult. Next season, everything could change with Kane.”

Crespo played under Mourinho – “a great man” he smiles – and thinks they’re on course for a title challenge.

Although it could come at a cost. The giants Mourinho has assembled could lead to a boring playing style that upsets Old Trafford fans, he thinks.

“Mourinho will play with Lukaku and  Matic – it’s a tough team,” he says. “I don’t know if, when you got to Old Trafford, you are happy to watch this kind of football.

“Maybe you prefer the Mauricio Pochettino way or the Pep Guardiola way, but Jose is always fighting.

“Last year, he demonstrated everything. Maybe they didn’t fight for the title but his team won three trophies.

“It’s very tough because the Premier League has very good managers with very strong teams. It’s very difficult. I think before the end of the transfer window, Conte will not repeat the title.

“But I think it will be between Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. I like so much Guardiola. I think he’s the best but Mourinho… I don’t want to say he doesn’t feel the pressure because he does – but he still wins.”

Liverpool are on course for less lofty heights, though. Philippe Coutinho yesterday handed in a transfer request and looks set to leave the club to join Barcelona.

Crespo thinks he could fill the void but Neymar’s shoes are big ones to fill.

He said: “Whoever comes if less than Neymar or you choose another Messi and put there, or you choose Cristiano Ronaldo and put there. Anyone else would be less.

“They are great players but less. Coutinho is a very good player but he’s not Neymar. It will be difficult to play in this position with another player.

“The same for Paulo Dybala. He is good but it’s not his position because it’s the left-foot – and that’s not Dybala.

“There’s not many players who can replace Neymar. One is Cristiano Ronaldo but it’s difficult for that to happen.”
