It’s also an important layer of protection against weather and other threats, so making the right siding choice is important. This infographic can help with your decision!

Here are a couple of the siding choices we break down, including their respective descriptions, life expectancy, and other benefits:

  • Metal Siding: Aluminum and Steel

Aluminum gained popularity because it was cheaper than wood, and also needed less maintenance. Then steel emerged as another solid option, thanks to its added strength and durability.

Average Life Expectancy: 20-40 years (aluminum); 40+ years (steel)

Features:

  • Comes in many styles, and can mimic the look of wood
  • Aluminum is one of the lowest-priced options
  • Aluminum substrate can last for decades, but needs periodic refinishing
  • Steel costs more per square foot, but is less prone to dings and dents
  • Galvalume steel is very resilient, and doesn’t need refinishing
  • Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement is the newest entry, and has become favored thanks to great looks, impressive durability, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness.

Average Life Expectancy: 50-100 years with basic care

Features:

  • Comes closest to emulating the look of natural wood grain
  • Available in a variety of styles, designs, and orientations
  • Incredibly durable, not susceptible to rot or pests, little required maintenance
  • Includes recycled and recyclable materials; it’s more resource-efficient
  • Higher price point, but also likely to be the last siding you’ll ever need

Judge Carol-Lisa Phillip ruled that Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes must allow the records to be inspected before 7 pm local time on Friday and determined she had violated public records law by failing to release the information to Scott’s attorneys.

US President Donald Trump, November 9, 2018

Scott filed suit in Broward and Palm Beach counties on Thursday. The first lawsuit, which he filed jointly with the National Republican Senatorial Committee, alleges Snipes was “unwilling to disclose records revealing how many electors voted, how many ballots have been canvassed, and how many ballots remain to be canvassed.”

At the same time, Scott ordered Florida law enforcement to investigate the elections offices in both counties, though he stopped short of alleging criminality or fraud in writing. Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesperson Gretl Plessinger told CNN that the agency is not “actively investigating anything related to the election.”

While Scott looked to have won his Senate race by a secure margin on Tuesday night, late-counted ballots have cast doubt on his victory, leaving him within 0.25 percent of his opponent, Democrat Bill Nelson – which would trigger an automatic recount.

On Friday morning, Nelson filed a lawsuit of his own against Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, calling for all mail-in votes and those “determined to involve a signature mismatch, be counted as valid votes,” alleging that the signature-matching process is discriminatory and a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection clause. The suit claims the “standardless, inconsistent, and unreliable signature matching process” is unfair to the young, the non-white and first-time voters.

Scott lashed out at his opponent, whose lawyer – Democrat heavyweight Marc Elias – has been attached to several other contested elections that went to recounts.

“Until today, the Nelson campaign has been working on voter fraud behind the scenes in secret,” Scott said in a statement. “With today’s filing, their desperation has driven them to ask the federal courts to allow voter fraud.”

The late-counted votes have also cast doubt on the results of the contest for Scott’s gubernatorial seat, which Republican Ron DeSantis appeared to have won. Democrat Andrew Gillum, who conceded Tuesday night, withdrew his concession on Thursday and said he was open to a recount.

In Florida, votes are subject to a machine recount if the margin of victory is under 0.5 percent and a hand recount if under 0.25 percent.

Broward County has become something of a Bermuda Triangle for votes under Snipes, whom a court found to have illegally destroyed ballots in 2016 while subject to a legal challenge from congressional candidate Tim Canova.

Florida itself has been a running joke in electoral politics ever since the 2000 recount that many believe handed the presidency to George W. Bush. The “hanging chads” at fault in that contest were found in multiple counties, including Broward and Palm Beach.

Tony Blair regrets siding with Israel on Hamas boycott https://briefnews.eu/tony-blair-regrets-siding-with-israel-on-hamas-boycott/ https://briefnews.eu/tony-blair-regrets-siding-with-israel-on-hamas-boycott/#respond Sun, 15 Oct 2017 20:01:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tony-blair-regrets-siding-with-israel-on-hamas-boycott/

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has said he was wrong to side with George W Bush and Israel to boycott Hamas after it won the 2006 Palestinian elections.

“We were wrong to boycott Hamas after its election win,” Blair said in an interview reported in the Guardian.

Blair now realizes it may have been a better idea for the international community to enter “into a dialogue” with Hamas. Instead, then-Prime Minister Blair supported Bush’s decision to cut aid and relations with the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority (PA) after its election victory in 2006.

Hamas was given an ultimatum, either go against its charter by recognizing Israel, renouncing violence and promising to continue agreements made between its predecessors, Fatah, and Israel, or face an aid blockade.

Blair, along with Israel and the rest of the Middle East Quartet consisting of the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the US, then sanctioned and cut aid to the PA.

The group resumed ties with the PA in 2007, after it split from Hamas following a conflict that ended with Hamas taking control of the Gaza Strip, and has continued to boycott Hamas since then.

A UN report warned in 2015 that Gaza will be “uninhabitable” by 2020 should the effects of the decade-long blockade and three Israeli military offensives since then continue.

“In retrospect I think we should have, right at the very beginning, tried to pull [Hamas] into a dialogue and shifted their positions,” Blair said. “I think that’s where I would be in retrospect.”

“But obviously it was very difficult, the Israelis were very opposed to it,” he continued. “But you know we could have probably worked out a way whereby we did – which in fact we ended up doing anyway, informally.”

Blair’s comments were made in an interview for a new book, ‘Gaza: Preparing for Dawn’.

The book features Department for International Development minutes from 2006 warning of the danger of ignoring Hamas. It details how it would be a challenge for Hamas to change its stance on Israel in the short term, even though the two parties had been working together on a municipal level. “Ultimately Hamas’s participation in the realities of political responsibility might bring about Hamas’s transformation to a political rather than terrorist organization,” the document predicted.

The book also contains comments by Blair’s chief of staff, Jonathan Powell, who described the Hamas strategy as a “terrible mistake,” explaining that negotiating with both Hamas and Fatah resulted in double the negotiations and concessions made.

Blair’s comments have been published as Hamas and Fatah are in the midst of a reconciliation agreement penned in Cairo last week, which will see the PA resume control of Gaza by December, and lift electricity restrictions on the area.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his nation is against “any reconciliation in which the terrorist organization Hamas does not disarm and end its war to destroy Israel.”

Since leaving Downing Street, Blair embarked on a career as special envoy for the Quartet on the Middle East until 2015, and is now as a consultant and owner of various foundations.

Blair was prime minister from 1997 to 2007. During his time in office, he followed the geopolitical footsteps of Bush, fully supporting the US leader’s decision to invade Afghanistan and later Iraq. He has since been accused of war crimes due to the argument for the Iraq invasion being based on lies about Saddam Hussein having weapons of mass destruction. The Chilcot Inquiry found the invasion to be unjustified and unnecessary last year.

Iran’s foreign minister says Europe is siding with him over Trump on nuclear deal https://briefnews.eu/irans-foreign-minister-says-europe-is-siding-with-him-over-trump-on-nuclear-deal/ https://briefnews.eu/irans-foreign-minister-says-europe-is-siding-with-him-over-trump-on-nuclear-deal/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 10:42:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/irans-foreign-minister-says-europe-is-siding-with-him-over-trump-on-nuclear-deal/ javad zarifAP

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif has bashed President Donald Trump ahead of what looks certain to become a showdown over the legacy of former President Barack Obama’s top foreign policy achievement — the Iran deal.

Zarif, a key architect of the 2015 accord, gave an interview to Politico that shed light on the fraught multilateral discussions the US, Europe, and Iran hold over the continued recertification of the Iran deal — and according to Zarif, Europe is taking his side.

Trump campaigned vigorously on the idea of ripping up the 2015 deal that prohibits Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons, but since he came into office he has paid relatively little attention to the agreement, instead focusing on North Korea’s burgeoning, unchecked nuclear advances.

But Trump has not forgotten his convictions.

Every 90 days the US has to confirm that Iran has complied with the terms of the deal. For the first six months of Trump’s presidency, he has gone through with the procedure, albeit begrudgingly, according to the Associated Press.

Reports, citing sources in the administration and the State Department, said Trump has been looking for a way out of the deal by drumming up “foolproof intelligence” that Iran has violated the deal.

But Trump and his understaffed State Department have reportedly strained relationships in Europe, and weakened the US’s credibility. Trump himself announced his intention to exit the deal even without evidence of wrongdoing on Iran’s part.

“If it was up to me, I would have had them noncompliant 180 days ago,” Trump told the Wall Street Journal of the Iran deal.

Now Zarif, who is by all accounts very good at his job, seems to have capitalized on Trump’s haste.

“The Europeans have made it very clear to us and to the United States that they intend to do their utmost to ensure survival of the deal,” Zarif told Politico.

Even beyond Europe, who may differ with the US on certain issues but shouldn’t be expected to drift too far out of the US’s sphere of influence, Zarif pointed out that exiting the Iran deal could have major consequences for the US around the world.

“Look at the message that you are sending to the world,” Zarif said. Withdrawing from the Iran deal “would make it tougher for anybody to believe and rely upon the United States—anybody, not just North Korea. You’ve seen US allies saying that the United States is not a reliable partner.”

‘We told you so’: EU reaps bitter harvest of siding with US in sanctions row – Russia’s UN envoy https://briefnews.eu/we-told-you-so-eu-reaps-bitter-harvest-of-siding-with-us-in-sanctions-row-russias-un-envoy/ https://briefnews.eu/we-told-you-so-eu-reaps-bitter-harvest-of-siding-with-us-in-sanctions-row-russias-un-envoy/#respond Sat, 29 Jul 2017 06:02:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-told-you-so-eu-reaps-bitter-harvest-of-siding-with-us-in-sanctions-row-russias-un-envoy/ The EU has fallen victim of its unconditional support for the US sanction policy against Russia, Russia’s UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya told RT. Calling the state of US-Russian relations “worse” than that of the Cold War-era, Nebenzya said the two still have to cooperate.

The wave of anti-Russian sanctions coming from Washington is “unprecedented, baseless and illegal,” said Nebenzya, who is Russia’s new Permanent Representative to the UN.

He added that the EU should blame itself for becoming a victim of the side-effects of the US policy toward Russia as it previously followed in Washington’s footsteps as regards to sanction policy.

“Ironically, the EU together with US implemented illegal sanctions against Russia and now it could be a victim of those restrictions as the result of these sanctions. This situation can be described as: We told you so,” the diplomat said.

Moscow took its time before responding with countermeasures in the hopes the US authorities would change its ways, Nebenzya added. The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday ordered the American Embassy to scale down its staff and halt the use of a retreat and a storage facility in Moscow.

“We did not do it out of the blue. It was a response to the previous administration’s measures that were taken on the eve of 2017 when the United States sent out 35 Russian diplomats and basically robbed us of our property, which belongs to us legally,” Nebenzya said, adding that the legislation about to be signed into law by US President Trump was the last straw that breached the limit of Moscow’s patience.

“We repeatedly warned our American colleagues that our patience would run thin one day. And this happened now… We were trying to refrain from tit-for-tat for a long time enough to allow our American partners to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, it did not happen,” the diplomat said.
As for why Moscow decided to act now, Nebenzya explained that “with the adoption by the US Congress of the resolution which legitimizes in particular the seizure of our property, we had no choice but to reciprocate.”

Besides drawing a strong condemnation from Moscow, the US move also sparked anger among Washington’s European allies, who slammed the measure threatening to derail joint EU-Russia energy projects as unilateral and violating international law. The part of sanctions that may hamper the construction of Nordstream II gas pipeline has been of a special concern to EU leaders, who have warned of counter-sanctions to compensate for the potential harm to European companies involved.

Nebenzya spoke to journalists after presenting his credentials to UN Secretary General António Guterres on Friday shortly after being appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin to serve as the country’s new ambassador to the United Nations. Nebenzya replaces the prominent Russian diplomat Vitaly Churkin, who died of a heart attack in February a day before turning 65.

In his welcoming remarks, Guterres described Churkin as “the man whom I admired enormously” and one of “most brilliant diplomats ever, any country, anywhere in the world.”

The UN chief then highlighted the role of Russia as that of “an important pillar of multilateral system,” with which he strives to build “very deep and effective cooperation in all aspects of the actions of the United Nations.”

Stressing the need for reform of the UN institutions, Nebenzya said Russia would put all its efforts into creating a broad anti-terrorist coalition on the basis of the organization.

“This is our main task and one of the main priorities of the UN actions. So far, such a coalition, unfortunately, has not been created, I will tell you bluntly – we are not to blame for this. But we are heading in this direction. The process of establishing an anti-terrorist architecture is under way,” he said.

Weighing in on the poor state of US-Russia relations, the Russian diplomat said that the relations appear to be at one of the lowest points in history, “perhaps, worse than even during the Cold War.”
However, despite the situation that “does not create optimism,” Nebenzya added that “the task of diplomats is building bridges under any circumstances. We will cooperate. Americans cannot go without us, and us without them. This is an objective reality.”
