“It’s been trying to get me, but it won’t win,” she added.

CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual has also been affected as he missed an appearance on the sister show It Takes Two earlier this month after claims of him feeling “run down”.

His professional dance partner Amy Dowden also sparked concern with viewers after performing on the main show and speaking about it afterwards, it was obvious she wasn’t very well.

Norovirus outbreak: 500 people affected by Royal Caribbean sickness – compensation latest https://briefnews.eu/norovirus-outbreak-500-people-affected-by-royal-caribbean-sickness-compensation-latest/ https://briefnews.eu/norovirus-outbreak-500-people-affected-by-royal-caribbean-sickness-compensation-latest/#respond Mon, 14 Jan 2019 13:56:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/norovirus-outbreak-500-people-affected-by-royal-caribbean-sickness-compensation-latest/

Cruises are notorious for the quick spread of illness and passengers on board the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas are the latest casualties of winter vomiting bug norovirus. Cruisers first started feeling sick when the cruise ship departed from Port Canaveral in Florida, USA last Sunday. It was due to sail for a week through the Caribbean but, as a result of the norovirus outbreak, it docked early back at Port Canaveral on Saturday. The cruise company initially said 277 passengers on the ship were afflicted with norovirus but this figure has now swelled to nearly 500.

All the passengers will be offered a refund as a result of the outbreak, Royal Caribbean has said.

This is an unusual move on the part of Royal Caribbean. Costs for the seven-night Western Caribbean voyage on the Oasis of the Seas start at $ 626 (£487) per person before taxes and fees for an interior stateroom.

Cruise companies are not under obligation to provide a refund in such situations as this.

“Cruise lines look at this sort of thing on a case by case basis and how disruptive this was to passengers,” Colleen McDaniel, executive editor at Cruise Critic, told Market Watch.

According to a letter allegedly delivered to Oasis of the Seas passengers and posted to Cruise Critic, Royal Caribbean will also provide up to $ 200 (£156) per person for re-booked domestic flights, up to $ 400 (£311) per person for international flight change fees or up to $ 200 per stateroom for one night’s stay at a hotel.

Royal Caribbean said it will be refunding internet and beverage packages and prepaid gratuities on a prorated basis for the day the cruise won’t be sailing, reported Market Watch.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “Norovirus is a very contagious virus. You can get norovirus from an infected person, from contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces.

“The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed (acute gastroenteritis). This leads you to have stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhoea and to throw up.”

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Oasis of the Seas returned to Port Canaveral a day early after an episode of gastrointestinal illness.

“All of the ship’s guests will receive full refunds of their cruise fare paid.

“We thought the right thing to do was to get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health.

“Returning on Saturday also gave us more time to completely clean and sanitise the ship before her next sailing.”

“Our guests sail with us to have great holidays, and we are sorry this cruise fell short.”

Owen Torres, a spokesman for Royal Caribbean, told FLORIDA TODAY of the outbreak which happened on Wednesday and said: “Those affected by the short-lived illness are being treated by our ship’s medical team with over-the-counter medication. Meanwhile, we are bringing additional medical staff on board and we’re engaging in intensive sanitary procedures to minimise the risk of any further issues.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Royal Caribbean for an updated comment on the norovirus outbreak.

Incidents such as this highlight the importance of travel insurance. Britons need to remember a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card is not enough.

“Even in Europe, the EHIC card is not enough; and while the UK has reciprocal health agreements with some countries, this again tends to cover the basics and cannot be relied on to cover, say, repatriation expenses,”  Mark Colonnese, Director at travel tech specialist Aquarium Software, told Express.co.uk.

Jet2 flight emergency response as ‘sickness bug’ causes passengers to vomit onboard https://briefnews.eu/jet2-flight-emergency-response-as-sickness-bug-causes-passengers-to-vomit-onboard/ https://briefnews.eu/jet2-flight-emergency-response-as-sickness-bug-causes-passengers-to-vomit-onboard/#respond Sun, 02 Sep 2018 18:47:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jet2-flight-emergency-response-as-sickness-bug-causes-passengers-to-vomit-onboard/

The Jet2 flight returned from Spain last night to Leeds at 9:45pm when the incident occurred.

After landing, two ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response team were dispatched to the area.

Passengers were reportedly being violently sick due to the bug after landing at the airport.

No-one was reported to have been taken to hospital.

One passenger told Yorkshire Evening Post: “We were stuck on the run way for nearly a hour waiting for the emergency services to attend and give us the all clear.”

Another took to Facebook to praise the services of the crew, saying people onboard were “dropping like flies,” according to the BBC.

West Yorkshire Police Sergeant Chris Brumfitt tweeted images at the time of the response.

He wrote: “Joint emergency service response to Leeds / Bradford airport tonight after reports of a number of people falling ill on an in-bound flight.

“Fortunately nothing more than a sickness bug.”

A spokesperson for Jet2 confirmed to Express.co.uk: “We can confirm that the crew on board flight LS298 from Reus to Leeds Bradford Airport arranged an ambulance for two passengers who were taken ill.

“The crew were alerted to a further two, non-associated cases of passengers feeling unwell on board.

“On arrival, as a precaution they were immediately checked over in the ambulance before heading home.

“All other passengers disembarked as normal and continued their journeys. The safety and care of our customers is always our first priority.”

Sickness bugs can spread very easily on a plane thanks to the circulated air inside the cabin.

Turning the air vent off above a seat, however, could mean catching even more germs.

The blast of air from the overhead fan can help push any germs in the air that are spread through compartments of the plane ctowards the floor.

The medical director at Lahey Medical Center-Peabody told Travel + Leisure it can block particles that spread through the air from the passenger.

He said: “As a rule of thumb, the air that you’re typically breathing and exposed to is usually anywhere from two to five rows surrounding your seat.”

The air vent therefore pushes the air downwards which can help to avoid falling sick.

In Sickness and in Health … but Not in Debt https://briefnews.eu/in-sickness-and-in-health-but-not-in-debt-2/ https://briefnews.eu/in-sickness-and-in-health-but-not-in-debt-2/#respond Thu, 02 Aug 2018 11:59:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/in-sickness-and-in-health-but-not-in-debt-2/

Before and after, there’s the bachelor/bachelorette party, the rehearsal dinner and the day-after brunch. There’s the photo booth, which is a definite necessity these days. And what couple doesn’t have a website designed to share with the world the first time they laid eyes on each other?

The sane person will certainly agree with sociologist and sexologist Dr. Pepper Schwartz when she says, “The whole thing has gotten way out of hand.” The whole thing being the never-ending list of costly accompaniments that now come along with planning a wedding.

Couples spend $ 30,000 on average planning their Big Day … but the more you spend, the shorter your marriage is.

Yet until Emory University economics professors Andrew Francis and Hugo Mialon decided to organize a study last year, no one had paused to question whether this out-of-control spending was having an impact on, well, the actual marriage. Spoiler alert, it does. And it’s not a positive one. Francis and Mialon surveyed more than 3,000 people — all of whom have been married just once — and found that across income levels the more you dish out on the Big Day, the shorter the marriage. Now, that’s a raw deal.

According to the media company XO Group, the average wedding budget has soared to an all-time high of almost $ 30,000 (that’s not including the honeymoon), with 1 in 8 couples spending more than $ 40,000. As a whole, research firm IBISWorld calculates, the industry generates $ 55 billion a year. “Advertising has fueled the norm that spending large amounts on the engagement ring and wedding is an indication of commitment or is helpful for a marriage to be successful,” the researchers wrote in an email.

  • Guys: Investing between $ 2,000 and $ 4,000 on an engagement ring means you’re 1.3 times more likely to get divorced compared with the more frugal fellows who only allocate between $ 500 and $ 2,000.
  • For both sexes, spending more than $ 20,000 on the wedding ups the odds of divorce by 3.5 times compared with couples who keep it between $ 5,000 and $ 10,000.
  • For the best odds, though, keep the festivities to less than $ 1,000.

Francis and Mialon say one possible explanation is that post-wedding debt stokes marital tensions. But, as Schwartz is quick to point out, correlation is not the same as causation. She says part of the problem may be that “the wedding has become the highlight rather than the beginning of something.” After almost three decades of planning weddings, Kim Horn, whom bridal geeks might recognize from her cameos on the WE network’s My Fair Wedding, agrees: “The focus is not on the relationship and the long-term commitment.” Since the 1980s, when Horn first started her career, the industry has become much more hyped, she says. Between bridal magazines and reality TV shows, couples are inundated with advertising, so she says it’s not surprising that average spending has doubled since 1990.

Now this next finding may seem contradictory: While excessive nuptial spending is a hazard to lasting love, a hefty guest list has the opposite effect. So instead of opting for a smaller wedding to save money, simply spend less per person. Rather than renting a photo booth, pick up a couple Polaroid cameras. Or save the $ 1,000 a DJ charges and try this novel idea: make your own playlist.

Will Self-Driving Cars Cause More Motion Sickness? A Cure Is in the Works https://briefnews.eu/will-self-driving-cars-cause-more-motion-sickness-a-cure-is-in-the-works/ https://briefnews.eu/will-self-driving-cars-cause-more-motion-sickness-a-cure-is-in-the-works/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 21:03:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/will-self-driving-cars-cause-more-motion-sickness-a-cure-is-in-the-works/ UMTRI-1

–

When people are freed from the monotony of driving cars, one of the biggest promises of fully autonomous travel is that passengers could use their newfound free time in their vehicles to catch up on work, read a book, or binge on the latest Netflix offerings. That sounds nice, at least in theory. But those potential benefits might never come to fruition for a sizable percentage of vehicle occupants.

–

Motion sickness affects roughly half of passengers who currently attempt to read books in vehicles, according to Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). Once drivers give up a connection to the vehicle’s movements through direct control and morph into passengers, many more people may suffer from this problem.

–

The cause is a conflict between the visual and vestibular cues that a person feels when they’re not directly watching the road ahead. Sivak and his fellow researcher Brandon Schoettle of UMTRI have patented a potential fix.

–

They have developed a system that uses pulses of light to mimic the visual cues a person would get by looking out the vehicle. It matches the vestibular inputs related to the vehicle’s velocity, acceleration, yaw rate, and lateral movement. Light can be delivered from a wearable device that looks like a pair of goggles or glasses as well as from other light panels embedded in the cabin.

–

UMTRI-2

–

“Elimination of outside visual motion stimuli, while retaining the motion stimuli within the vestibular system, i.e. the inner ear is a main contributor to motion sickness,” the researchers wrote in their patent application, which was granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month. “Conversely, retaining or simulating such visual stimuli should help reduce the frequency and severity of motion sickness, as the sensor mismatch is eliminated.”

–

By using a combined series of lights from both a wearable and in-cabin panels, the system can account for any number of seating configurations or positions that might be used in autonomous travel. The light sources might include LED, LCD, diode, lasers or other “luminescence” sources, according to the patent application.

–

–

Now that the application has been granted, an official with the University of Michigan’s Office of Technology Transfer said the researchers will start contacting suppliers and automakers in hopes of commercializing the technology. It’s worth noting that the light-array system isn’t limited to autonomous cars. Potentially, it could be used aboard airplanes, boats, and trains.

–

But with automated vehicles poised to increase the need for some sort of countermeasure, the focus is currently on cars. If the industry spent billions on developing autonomous-driving technology only to see it go underused because of illness, well, that’d be enough to get sick about.

Glasses could prevent motion sickness in self-driving cars https://briefnews.eu/glasses-could-prevent-motion-sickness-in-self-driving-cars-2/ https://briefnews.eu/glasses-could-prevent-motion-sickness-in-self-driving-cars-2/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 13:13:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/glasses-could-prevent-motion-sickness-in-self-driving-cars-2/

Never mind festooning a self-driving car in lights and other devices to fend off motion sickness — you might just have to slip on some eyewear. University of Michigan researchers have patented a system that could use glasses or a headset to prevent a disconnect between your sense of motion and what you see. The approach would use a set of sequentially activated light pipes that would imitate the movement of the autonomous vehicle in your peripheral view, giving your body a frame of reference while freeing you to check your phone without getting sick.

The technology could be embedded into the car itself, but the nature of the design makes it portable. Uber’s recent patent application for a similar concept relied on sensory input that demanded non-wearable gear and was more about signaling intentions and offering distractions than mimicking the car itself.

The researchers aren’t guaranteed to implement the technology, as it’s just a patent, but they’re planning to contact automakers and suppliers to turn this into a shipping product. And it could be necessary. The University noted that roughly half of adults get queasy just by reading a book as a passenger — even more people could feel sick in driverless cars. If the technology is going to get mainstream adoption, especially in designs that have people facing backward, inventions like this might be vital.
