Vikings season 6 spoilers: Fans slam Ivar for ‘sick’ killer bond with supervillain Oleg https://briefnews.eu/vikings-season-6-spoilers-fans-slam-ivar-for-sick-killer-bond-with-supervillain-oleg/ https://briefnews.eu/vikings-season-6-spoilers-fans-slam-ivar-for-sick-killer-bond-with-supervillain-oleg/#respond Thu, 05 Dec 2019 06:29:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vikings-season-6-spoilers-fans-slam-ivar-for-sick-killer-bond-with-supervillain-oleg/

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Vikings season 6

The first two episodes of Vikings season six saw Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) settling into life as king. Meanwhile, Ivar The Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) who fled Kattegat in the season five finale, is making connections all the way in Kiev, Russia. However, Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky) doesn’t seem to have the best influence over Ivar.

After travelling through the ice and snow, the exiled warrior finds himself at the mercy of newcomer Prince Oleg.

Their newfound friendship is certainly set to be a complicated one if the trailer is anything to go by.

Both Ivar and the Prince are both as ruthless as each other, and this became clear when the two began to talk.

To the horror of fans, one scene even sees the pair bond over murdering their wives.

Fans will remember the season five scene that saw Ivar strangle Freydis (Alicia Agneson) after she betrayed him, siding with Bjorn in the siege of Kattegat.

Viewers were reminded of the character’s ruthlessness as he appeared to meet his Russian alter ego.

One fan tweeted: “Look at dem m****r f*****s bonding about killing their dead wives. #Vikings #Vikings6 Lord have mercy.”

“It’s about time you said you were sorry, Ivar. #Vikings6”, added a second.

One fan tweeted: “Yeah I like the Rus king. He’s intelligent, passionate, and he scares Ivar. Which it is about time someone did.”

Moreover, it seems Ivar could be set to undergo a huge transformation this season.

In an interview with gamespot, creator Michael Hirst began: “When I first introduced Ivar into the show, I knew that he was going to do bad things.

“I mean, historically, he did bad things. But it was in the context of his clinical condition, his brittle bone disease.”

“Even with the idea of Ivar lashing out and doing bad things, I never lost total sympathy for him because I understood his condition. I understood his psychology.”

He explained: “When he took over Kattegat, it was that other side the thing that got control – the bad side, the dark side.

“I kind of wanted to pull him out of there and to show him again, as someone who you could have sympathy with. To show him in a much more decent life.”

Vikings season six now airs weekly on Amazon Prime Video

“There’s a letter in the Telegraph today from 300 business leaders who are saying to Boris, ‘Yeah you know, we want to get a deal done but if they’re messing about, just walk away because we are prepared for No Deal.’

“And I think in reality, there’s no such thing as a No Deal.

“All there is is we revert to WTO rules, which is how the rest of the world trades, the rest of the ones who are not in the EU.”

Carole continued: “What I want to know, why is it the Remainers have recast one choice of a binary vote, which is leaving, a clean break from the EU as something extremist, as something hard line and want it softened.

BBC News: ‘Biased’ BBC reporting of Boris Johnson leaves viewers FURIOUS ‘I’m sick of it’ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-biased-bbc-reporting-of-boris-johnson-leaves-viewers-furious-im-sick-of-it/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-biased-bbc-reporting-of-boris-johnson-leaves-viewers-furious-im-sick-of-it/#respond Wed, 24 Jul 2019 11:20:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-biased-bbc-reporting-of-boris-johnson-leaves-viewers-furious-im-sick-of-it/

The news was announced yesterday that Boris Johnson had won the leadership challenge against fellow Conservative MP Jeremy Hunt.

After speaking to the Queen, Johnson will be sworn in to his new service and then will officially become the leader of the United Kingdom today.

During today’s edition of BBC Breakfast, presenters Dan Walker and Louise Minchin did their utmost to host a fair discussion about the election, but viewers were unhappy with the choice to welcome three non-supporters from the government in a row.

Liberal Democrats MP Chuka Umunna, Stuart Hosie from the SNP, and Shadow Trade Secretary Barry Gardiner all gave their views on the news on the BBC programme.

Feeling the decision was biased against the new Prime Minister, viewers flocked to Twitter to share their complaints.

One person wrote: “Now I’m not a big fan of Boris but FFS #BBCBreakfast is it slag Boris off day. He hasn’t yet seen HM. Your political editor needs the sack. Biased or what?”

“Is this a balanced interview @bbcbreakfast? Three guests that obviously do not like our new Prime Minister. I’m finding hard to defend the BBC here #bbcbreakfast,” another slammed.

A third agreed: “#bbcnews #skynews #gmb All parading Remoaners slagging off Boris & Trump they couldn’t be more bias to remain if they tried. Oh god now BarryGardiner on BBC.”

While a fourth said: “Wow @Kevin_Maguire doesn’t like #boris who’d have thought it? #bbcbreakfast.”

“We all know how much #bbc and #bbcbreakfast don’t like Boris or Brexit,” a fifth claimed. “But imagine if they at least offered a bit of balance rather than the constant barrage of doom and gloom. What a difference it would make.”

A sixth added: “Oh for goodness sake #bbcbreakfast this is going too far! Engineered blatantly to give an ‘anti’ message. They are not even trying to hide it now. Disgraceful.”

Others commented on the programme’s later decision to host pro-Johnson guests.

“Andrew Pierce chief tory cheerleader loves Johnson.. who knew. #bbcbreakfast,” one person noted.

Another posted: “I guess Blair, Major et al were unavailable as they would be interviewed. #bbcnews.”

“Well it’s a deeply depressing and worrying day for the country,” Chukka said. “I mean seeing the leadership contest yesterday he looked like an overexcited public school boy who just discovered the keys to the tuck shop. For him it’s a big game.

“It’s all about him, but actually the really serious thing is what’s going to happen to our economy as a result of the policy course he’s intent on pursuing.

“We’ve had a raft of data just in the last few days showing that pursuing a no-deal Brexit is going to tip our economy into recession,” the politician continued. “And that’s at a time that we have over 14 million people in our country living in poverty, wages aren’t going to get back up to pre-crisis levels until 2023 at least with big inequalities.

“And he’s going to add further upset and angst and stress by pursuing this course, which every sane person will tell you, is going to have a hugely detrimental effect on people’s jobs and livelihoods.”

Sharing he agreed with “most of” Chuka’s comments, Stuart went on: “I think SNPs’ approach to this can be characterised by saying we have profound concerns.

And he’s going to add further upset and angst and stress by pursuing this course, which every sane person will tell you, is going to have a hugely detrimental effect on people’s jobs and livelihoods.”

Sharing he agreed with “most of” Chuka’s comments, Stuart went on: “I think SNPs’ approach to this can be characterised by saying we have profound concerns.

“Not just because of his willingness to embark upon a reckless no-deal Brexit – which every single assessment I’ve ever seen and there are dozens – tell us will be economically damaging.

“But because of the way he makes things up. Look at the way he did the ridiculous stunt last week with the kipper. The point he was making wasn’t true.”

“He’s the poor man’s Donald Trump, when actually he’s probably one of the richest and most out-of-touch PMs we’ll ever have,” Barry later said. “The extraordinary thing is that he’s coming in with a pledge not to sort out the problems in our schools in terms of the funding crisis there, not to sort out the social crisis, not to sort out the policing but actually, to give a hand out to the richest people in our country of £3,000.

“This is not reality. This is someone who wants to come in as one of the wealthiest PMs we’ll have seen in this century and last, and he’s going to make the priority giving the hand-out to the rich. I just don’t see how this resonates with the British public,” the guest added.

The BBC programme later rectified a string of anti-Johnson guests by interviewing Iain Duncan Smith from the Conservative party, who said that the new Prime Minister is very different to the current perception of him.

“The real point is that the man I know, Boris Johnson, is a deeply liberal individual who believes deeply in tolerance,” he explained via video link. “And also most importantly, in the rights to free speech and reaction given constraints. And what he will want to do is impose that sense of deep liberalism on the country, but I think he’ll enthuse and lift the country at the same time.

“And goodness gracious, I don’t know about you, but I am fed up with the last two and a half – three years of the miserable downbeat view of too many politicians in Britain. It’s time to lift us again and say look Britain is great. We will do very well no matter the circumstances, because the people are what make it great not the politicians,” the MP added.

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

The Hot Zone Premiere Recap: Worried, Sick https://briefnews.eu/the-hot-zone-premiere-recap-worried-sick/ https://briefnews.eu/the-hot-zone-premiere-recap-worried-sick/#respond Tue, 28 May 2019 04:57:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-hot-zone-premiere-recap-worried-sick/

RELATED STORIES

The Ebola virus is one bad bug. And in the late 1980s, when it first appeared on American soil, one United States Army researcher was at the forefront of keeping it from infecting the populace. That researcher was Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax, and The Hot Zone — the National Geographic Channel miniseries based on Richard Preston’s bestseller — is her story.

In a moment, we’ll want to hear what you thought of The Hot Zone‘s two-hour premiere. (Parts 2 and 3 will air Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, at 9/8c.) But first, a quick recap:

The premiere opens in Kenya in 1980, where a man who is very ill boards a plane, vomits a lot of bloody matter into an airsick bag, and eventually winds up in a hospital where the medical staff wonder to themselves, “Is it the new disease?” It is, and that disease is caused by a pathogen that eventually is classified as a Level 4 biohazard (translation: super deadly). When the action jumps to the end of the decade, we see that the virus — Ebola — is being kept under very close watch at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Ft. Detrick in Maryland.

The Hot Zone Julianna Margulies Video NatGeoNancy Jaax (played by The Good Wife‘s Julianna Margulies) works at USAMRIID; her husband, Jerry Jaax (played by The Americans‘ Noah Emmerich) also is an Army veterinarian. They have two children. When their son worries that maybe Nancy might be exposed to AIDS in the course of her work — remember, this is around the time that mainstream America was starting to panic about HIV — she assures him, “I work in one of the safest places in the world.”

When a diseased monkey organ arrives at Nancy’s lab from a nearby private animal-testing facility, she and her co-workers think it’s probably evidence of simian hemorrhagic fever — deadly for animals, but not a threat to humans. But upon closer inspection, Nancy starts to suspect that something more dangerous is afoot. After a sequence explaining the intricacies of how to suit up for a Biosafety Level 4 lab (hint: There are a lot of steps and layers), Nancy notices that the sample she’s looking at isn’t just destroyed: It’s like the cells are “exploded,” she notes to a lab newbie who’s accompanying her. But before she can test to see whether the sample she’s got is Ebola, which kills 90 percent of its victims, she notices that’s she’s bleeding from the hand and has to “crash” exit the facility. Oops.

The Hot Zone Trailer Julianna MarguliesNancy is put in isolation, where it’s ultimately determined that she’s fine. But her samples were destroyed before anyone could pinpoint what was wrong with them, so she does what any sane person would do… She drives to the private facility late that night and bullies a guard into stealing her some monkey corpses.

There’s a harrowing bit when the frozen dead animals, which are only contained in garbage bags, start melting and leaking out the back of her trunk. But Nancy manages to buy some bleach, perform a thorough cleaning on the side of the road and get back in the vehicle before the local police show up to see what’s going on. Back at USAMRIID, Nancy’s lab privileges have been revoked, but a co-worker named Peter (played by That ’70s Show‘s Topher Grace) agrees to sneak her in. He’s got a vested interest, you see: When he scoffed at her worry over the sample, he and another colleague took a deep sniff of it, and now he’s worried that Ebola is colonizing all over his body.

Eventually, Nancy confirms that the illness they’re looking at is Ebola Zaire. “There’s no cure, no vaccine,” she tells the head of the private lab (played by House‘s Robert Sean Leonard), who reluctantly agrees to let her into his facility to check on another primate that’s exhibiting symptoms of the disease. But Nancy needs backup, so she calls her mentor Wade Carter (played by Game of Thrones‘ Liam Cunningham), who comes out of retirement when he hears that the virus — which has vexed him his entire professional life — has made its first appearance in America.

The Hot Zone Premiere Recap Episode 1 Julianna Margulies Ebola In a flashback, we watch Wade and another doctor traveling to an African mission hospital where they’ve heard reports of a terrible disease that kills with abandon. Wade is skeptical at first, but when he sees the residents of a nearby village have burned their homes (and, in some cases, themselves) to the ground in a desperate attempt to contain the illness, he’s deeply affected.

Back in Maryland, Wade and Nancy euthanize the sick monkey, but Wade is sure that the private facility is hiding something. Afterwards, once Jerry realizes everything that’s been going on, he is very angry that Nancy could’ve put their kids at risk by transporting the monkeys in the family car — not to mention how dangerous it is for her to be working so closely with a virus that’s so horrible. They argue.

Later, Wade shows up at Nancy’s house: He snuck back into the private facility and found another sick animal in a different cell. “We didn’t catch it in time,” he says gravely. “Who knows how far it’s spread?”

And now it’s your turn. What did you think of Night 1 of The Hot Zone? Grade the two-hour premiere via the poll below, then hit the comments with your thoughts!

US transport security workers forced to work for free during shutdown call in sick en masse https://briefnews.eu/us-transport-security-workers-forced-to-work-for-free-during-shutdown-call-in-sick-en-masse/ https://briefnews.eu/us-transport-security-workers-forced-to-work-for-free-during-shutdown-call-in-sick-en-masse/#respond Sun, 06 Jan 2019 01:04:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-transport-security-workers-forced-to-work-for-free-during-shutdown-call-in-sick-en-masse/

US Transportation Security Administration employees are calling in sick in protest over being forced to work without pay during the government shutdown that shows no signs of ending after 14 days.

After a recent CNN report that call-ins have shot up, more than doubling in some cases and affecting four major airports, TSA and its parent agency initially denied the problem existed, and are now downplaying its scale.

TSA union officials claim the call-ins are not an organized protest, explaining workers are calling out to work at second jobs as the shutdown begins to bite. But federal officials reportedly believe the “blue flu” – TSA uniforms are blue – has all the hallmarks of a coordinated protest against the shutdown.

TSA employees are considered “essential” – meaning even though their funding has run dry, they have to report to work anyway. Of the approximately 800,000 employees affected by the shutdown, about 420,000 are considered “essential” and forced to keep working.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson initially denied there was any “sickout” problem at all.

The TSA then issued a statement cautioning that while wait times “may be affected,” they currently “remain well within TSA standards” and  “security effectiveness will not be compromised” – not necessarily a reassuring statement, given the TSA’s “standards” for both wait times and security.

TSA spokesman Michael Bilello also tried to quash the rumors but inadvertently confirmed them, revealing that a full 5.5 percent of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s TSA force called in sick on Friday – significantly more than the typical 3.5 percent.

TSA union president Hydrick Thomas told CNN around 170 employees had called in sick every day of the past week from JFK International Airport, forcing the remaining employees to work overtime – and still for no pay.

TSA employees are among the lowest-paid federal workers, with salaries starting at $ 25,000 per year. While they have been promised what they’re due once the shutdown ends, the impossibility of saving on such a low salary renders such promises empty. Other TSA employees have found more creative ways of making ends meet.
