With Sicario: Day of The Soldado, director Stefano Sollima roughened the edges of screenwriter Taylor Sheridan‘s potential trilogy. With Kate Macy (Emily Blunt) no longer around, Sollima felt Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) and Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) unleashed naturally meant things would turn bleaker. A crowd-pleasing thriller Sollima’s sequel is not, and nor should it be.

It’s a suitably bleak and often unpleasant experience that reveals more about Alejandro and Graver without completely stripping them of mystery. The main thrill is watching one of the best actors around, Benicio Del Toro, continue to make you both fearful and empathetic of Alejandro.

With the sequel now available on Blu-ray, we had the chance to ask Sollima about Del Toro’s performance, his time in El Paso and Juarez, long tracking shots, and more.

When you first got involved, where did your research start? How did you immerse yourself in this world?

I always do in each project that I am involved in. It’s really important to make the movie real, and also it’s really important to get some ideas that are a little bit more original than your own imagination. I think it’s really important opportunity telling the truth and to be realistic, so you as the audience member, what we’re portraying is absolutely the truth.

On Soldado, it was to study how it works, the illegal immigration, by the point-of-view of the Coyotes. So the people who are actually doing it for real, and then what you learn is that they’re a different kind of gangster. Sometimes it’s just logistics, or they just drive people from point A to point B. This is what I studied. Now really, by going to the border by doing interviews, almost everybody could be potentially involved in the product.

What else did you learn from your time in Mexico and El Paso?

I’ve been between the border of El Paso and Juarez, so I’ve been through Juarez. I’ve been back and forth many times to interview people and to understand how they work for real. What’s the process for the Coyote? And on the other side, what we try to learn about a character like Elijah, the kid. His house is the last one before the fence and the border. And so the idea was to, for example, to give them a passport, because with a U.S. passport you can move the border back and forth super quickly. For the cartel, people need to be residents, born and raised in Juarez are more entrusted, and they have more value, because it is easier for them to move back and forth, and to move through the border without being captured or arrested. This is for example an element that we add after the research.

I read you and cinematographer Dariusz [Wolski] watched quite a few documentaries and did a lot of research together. How did that research maybe influence the style and atmosphere you wanted for the film?

I think the visual style, I don’t think it’s something abstract that you decide way before you start prepping the movie. I offer that especially when you shoot a movie like Soldado, that it’s based on quality and shooting almost 95% in real location. It’s like the process is to know what “je ne sais quo” about the movie, and in this case it was to grip you, what’s really important to see and to read, the desert. So for example I decided to go more for long track shots than for multiple cameras set up and that impacts everything. So we went for something that was a little bit more impactful of the mood because it was a little lower, a little bit steadier, and it was more wide. I think that for the night scenes we decided to go for a gritty black mood.

sicario day of the soldado early buzz

Speaking of those long tracking shots, the caravan sequence is fantastic, just that unnerving music and Benicio Del Toro’s sinister smile. What can you tell me about timing that sequel?

Of course when you work on long track shot, especially if it involves special effects and timing, it’s really important. So, an incredible amount of work, but not in design. Even in a complicated action piece, I want to see the action from the eyes of a character. I did that on the convoy sequence. I decided to go and adopt a specific point-of-view from the little girl, who’s completely freaked out, and scared to death from what she’s experiencing.

Of course you were on location and using practical effects more often than not, but are there any subtle CG effects maybe the eye wouldn’t notice right away?

Yes, of course. It’s happening in the car, you know Benicio Del Toro and the grenade, and in the car we completely added the passenger, Bobby, who is trying to find the bomb right before it explodes. Which wasn’t practical, of course. It was too dangerous, and after everything else is practical.

I find Matt and Alejandro’s relationship fascinating. It was all about the work in the first movie, but I wondered this time how much does Matt actually care for Alejandro, if it all. Does he?

I think that this was something really along with Taylor we worked on a lot, because I think there is a moment that’s real interesting. Because in the beginning, it’s like you portray them as two buddies. They explain to you that they are sort of confidants. They know each other. They worked together a lot, but later on Brian and Matt receive a direct order to kill him. He doesn’t make any objection like, “Oh no. I cannot. He’s my friend.” The only question he asks is, “Do you know how long it takes to make someone like Alejandro?” So, I love this moment because for Matt it’s like comedy in this moment. He’s complaining the time he needed to create this perfect weapon, more than killing the friend. I think it is really interesting the call, when they speak together. I mean, Alejandro probably expected this, but not Matt ordering to kill the girl. So he says get rid of the girl, otherwise I have to come and see you, and the girl. I think it’s an interesting layer in their relationship.

Having played the characters before, I imagine Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro had ideas for them for the sequel. What was important to them to communicate in Day of Soldado?

It was an interesting experience because they already knew the character. But the point was that this screenplay that Taylor said it on script was so complex. It was for them, in a way, it was to work by knowing in advance, that is what you learn from the first chapter, but by going really much more deep in the exploration of their character. Because in a way in the first one, the story and Matt and Alejandro are basically seen from Emily Blunt’s character, from her point-of-view. So you know what she sees, and in Soldado you literally experience who they are.

So it’s a much more complex the job. In a way, they know the character. Let’s say you had a sort of grip over what you character could or could not do, but like I said, the job was really complex, so it was a sort of exploration in the deepness of both characters.

My last question for you, I’m curious to see what you’ll bring to the action in the Call of Duty movie after seeing Day of Soldado. What do you have in mind for those set pieces?

It’s a super secret. I cannot say anything about Call of Duty. If so I’d have to kill you [Laughs].

Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the sequel to the anxiety-inducing Sicario, is one of the summer’s dark horse films. No one was asking for a sequel to Sicario, but maybe it’ll turn out to be an entertaining surprise.  At the very least, this new Sicario: Day of the Soldado clip indicates the film will have plenty of intense moments. Watch it below.

In Sicario: Day of the Soldado, sleazy federal agent Matt Graver (summer movie king Josh Brolin) calls on his old pal, the mysterious and deadly Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), whose family was murdered by a drug cartel kingpin, to escalate the never-ending drug war by kidnapping the kingpin’s daughter, played by future Dora the Explorer Isabela Moner. In this intense new Sicario Day of the Soldado clip, we see the early stages of that kidnapping.

Sicario Day of the Soldado Clip

I continue to be on the fence with this movie. I really liked the first film, I really like Brolin and Del Toro as actors, and I love that goofy-as-hell scene in all the trailers in which Del Toro shoots his gun like a silly goose (note: this is apparently called “bump firing”). But a Sicario sequel seems a bit unnecessary, especially without original star Emily Blunt returning.

This clip has the same tone and feel as the first Sicario, with long shots of cars traveling down dangerous streets, as a droning, unsettling soundtrack lurks in the background. It’s a fairly intense clip, and if the whole film is able to keep up that level of intensity, it might turn out well. Who knows, Sicario: Day of the Soldado might be the summer’s best surprise (move-wise).

Sicario: Day of the Soldado, directed by Stefano Sollima and starring Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener, opens June 29, 2018.

In SICARIO, Day of the Soldado, the series begins a new chapter. In the drug war, there are no rules – and as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) calls on the mysterious Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), whose family was murdered by a cartel kingpin, to escalate the war in nefarious ways. Alejandro kidnaps the kingpin’s daughter to inflame the conflict – but when the girl is seen as collateral damage, her fate will come between the two men as they question everything they are fighting for.

‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ Trailer: Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro Start a War https://briefnews.eu/sicario-day-of-the-soldado-trailer-josh-brolin-and-benicio-del-toro-start-a-war/ https://briefnews.eu/sicario-day-of-the-soldado-trailer-josh-brolin-and-benicio-del-toro-start-a-war/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 06:50:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sicario-day-of-the-soldado-trailer-josh-brolin-and-benicio-del-toro-start-a-war/ Sicario Day of the Soldado Trailer

The Sicario sequel has a new trailer, and a new title to match. Sicario: Day of the Soldado continues the story of Denis Villeneuve’s intense 2015 drug cartel drama. Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro return, while Emily Blunt decides to sit this one out. Watch the Sicario Day of the Soldado trailer below.

I very much enjoyed Denis Villeneuve’s anxiety-inducing thriller Sicario. The film featured Emily Blunt as an FBI agent who gets plunged head-first into a drug war. Along the way, she teams with a mysterious government agent, played by Josh Brolin, and an even more mysterious outsider, played by Benicio Del Toro. The film was full of pulse-pounding moments, including a nightmarish opening sequence that made me squirm in my seat. Yet, as much as I enjoyed Sicario, I wasn’t exactly clamoring for a sequel. To make things even stranger, the sequel we now have – Sicario: Day of the Soldado – isn’t directed by Denis Villeneuve, and original star Emily Blunt has opted not to return. Brolin and Del Toro are back, though, and Stefano Sollima directs. The sequel was previously titled Sicario 2: Soldado, but has now been updated to Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Along with the new title, here’s a new trailer.

Sicario Day of the Soldado Trailer

USAToday reveals the plot of Sicario: Day of Soldado revolves around Del Toro’s character Alejandro being “hired again by CIA operative Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) to start a war between dueling cartels by kidnapping Isabela Reyes (Isabela Moner), the teenage daughter of infamous kingpin Carlos Reyes. When the mission is exposed, and Graver orders Alejandro to terminate Isabela, the killer’s cold façade cracks.”

I’m cautiously optimistic about this film. While I’d prefer Villeneuve in the director’s chair, Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the first Sicario, came back to pen the sequel’s script as well. And while I’d much rather have another film featuring Emily Blunt, Brolin and Del Toro are strong enough actors to make for an interesting dynamic.

Writer Taylor Sheridan has teased some story details about the sequel in the past:

“One of the producers called me and said, ‘If you were to do a sequel, how would you do it?’ and when he first brought it up I thought,’ Well of course you’re asking me.’ And then I had an idea, and I said, ‘Look you can’t really do a sequel, but I sure would love to see what happened if these guys didn’t have a chaperone.’ Because basically they’re operating within the United States, so I played with some actual laws that exist and found a way that they could operate more or less legally within the U.S. But they had a chaperone. What happens if they weren’t in the U.S. and they didn’t have a chaperone? How bad or good would that work out? You’ve seen Sicario, good isn’t going to factor into it too much.”

Sicario: Day of the Soldado opens June 29, 2018.

In Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the drug war on the US – Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) reteams with the mercurial Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro).

In The Mailbag:

  • John D writes in that he works at a mall theater which gets a lot of “general public” audience. “I can tell you that I get asked all shift, every shift “what’s the most popular movie?” And if I recommend something, the first thing they ask is “are a lot of people seeing it?” If my answer is no, the reply 90% of the time is, “screw that, it must not be good.” So yes, the general public, in my experience, does indeed decide if they’re going to see a movie based on its popularity. Going back to your convo last week, the other question I get asked is “Do you have the rotten tomatoes scores printed?” (We don’t). People are becoming MUCH more aware of rotten tomatoes scores, and I can even tell you how many refunds I’ve had to give for people walking out of Mother, screaming at me that rotten tomatoes lied. Back when I was in college, I managed a movie theater that played more indie/foreign fare, and NONE of these questions arose.”

‘Sicario’ Sequel ‘Soldado’ is “More Severe” and “Extremely Emotional,” Says Josh Brolin https://briefnews.eu/sicario-sequel-soldado-is-more-severe-and-extremely-emotional-says-josh-brolin/ https://briefnews.eu/sicario-sequel-soldado-is-more-severe-and-extremely-emotional-says-josh-brolin/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2017 06:19:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sicario-sequel-soldado-is-more-severe-and-extremely-emotional-says-josh-brolin/ Sicario 2 update

Sicario, the title of Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 suspenseful border thriller, is Spanish for “hitman.” The title of the upcoming sequel, Sicario 2: Soldado, translates to “soldier” – which is appropriate, considering it focuses on Josh Brolin‘s morally dubious Department of Justice agent and Benicio del Toro‘s equally mysterious assassin from the first film. (Sorry, Emily Blunt.)

Production on the movie has already wrapped, and while doing press for a different film, Brolin spoke a bit about what we can expect from the follow-up, including that it’s “extremely tense.” Sounds good to me.

Soldado is written by Taylor Sheridan, the screenwriter who wrote the original Sicario and wrote and directed this year’s Wind River. Villeneuve decided to take cinematographer Roger Deakins elsewhere and make Blade Runner 2049 instead of returning to the world of cartels, drug lords, and ruthless agents, so Gomorrah filmmaker Stefano Sollima stepped in to direct this sequel, which we’ve heard will be the second entry in a trilogy.

In an interview with Collider, Brolin was asked how Soldado turned out, and the actor compared it to making Sicario, a film he thought “was going to be OK” when he finished shooting it but actually turned out to be, in his words and mine, “a really fucking good movie.” Here’s more:

“I kind of felt the same way [with Soldado], and maybe that all stems from Taylor Sheridan’s writing and the fact that you can only fuck up his scripts to a certain extent, but it’s still going to be a good movie because maybe it does all start with the script. When you have an OK script you’re constantly manipulating it to make it sound decent, is one thing. When you have a great script and you’re just trying to do justice to it, maybe that’s something else, and I think that’s what we experienced with him.”

As far as how the final film will compare to Sicario’s suspenseful action and character-driven drama, Brolin praises not only its severity but its balance of emotions as well:

“I think it’s just more severe, man. All the way around. I think the characters are more severe. I think the movie is more severe. I think it’s just much bigger. It’s just a bigger scope film. Like I said, when I saw it it was like Sicario felt like a small movie to me, even though it was a very intimate movie. I’ve always said I don’t understand why bigger movies can’t be just as intimate, if not more intimate. Why do they have to be less emotional? I think Soldado‘s a perfect example of that. I think it’s extremely emotional. I think it’s extremely tense and it deals with similar subject matters.”

I have a feeling this movie is going to sneak up on people and may even end up being a contender for one of the most intense thrillers of next year. The first one came out back in 2015, but the sequel isn’t set for release until June 29, 2018.

James Mangold Will Direct ‘Disorder’ Remake From ‘Sicario’ Screenwriter https://briefnews.eu/james-mangold-will-direct-disorder-remake-from-sicario-screenwriter/ https://briefnews.eu/james-mangold-will-direct-disorder-remake-from-sicario-screenwriter/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2017 23:03:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/james-mangold-will-direct-disorder-remake-from-sicario-screenwriter/ James Mangold directing The Wolverine

James Mangold (Logan) will direct a remake of a French-Belgian movie not enough people saw in 2015, Disorder. It’s a very good and very atmospheric and sparse thriller from director Alice Winocour. Last year, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water) was tapped to write the American remake for Sony. After the script crossed Mangold’s desk, he signed up immediately to direct the film, which sounds like it’ll take some significant departures from the original.

Below, learn more about the Disorder remake.

Deadline reports Sony is fast-tracking the remake, with Mangold now steering the ship. The original, which starred Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, was about an ex-soldier with PTSD hired to protect a businessman’s wife and child. When the shady businessman is out of town, things get dangerous – but the events don’t unfold in the way you’d expect. Sheridan used the “original as a jumping off point,” according to Deadline. The Academy Award-nominated writer added a love story, altered the protagonist’s affliction, and set the story on the largest island in the Balearic Islands, Majorca. Winocour’s film took place in Maryland, on the French Riviera.

The trailer, which shows too much from the movie, mostly gets the original film’s tone right and gives a taste of Gesaffelstein‘s enchanting and tense score; the final track is outstanding.

The story doesn’t leave the door open for sequels, but Mangold’s film might. Sheridan’s script follows a character in which Sony sees some franchise. Mangold is currently working on a few projects, but his follow-up to Logan, whether it’s Disorder or an adaptation of Don Winslow’s The Force, isn’t set in stone, so this remake may happen first. The hope is to have the lead role cast and to have cameras rolling before the end of 2017.

Mangold will be following up the biggest hit his career, Logan, a movie that balances spectacle and drama perfectly. The comic book movie should land Mangold – a filmmaker who’s shown so much range over his career – even more opportunities.

The original Disorder is a rock solid and atmospheric thriller with two great performances, but it’s a simple story that could be taken in so many different directions. With Mangold behind the camera and Sheridan’s name on the script, this particular remake has a lot of potential.

Disorder is currently available to watch on Netflix Instant. Check it out if you haven’t yet.
