The confrontation was started on Sunday night by a group of inmates that prison authorities characterized as having “negative attitude.” They were demanding significant easing of rules in the top security prison and tried to convince other inmates to support them. After the latter group refused, the brawl broke out.
Several dozens of prisoners took part in the brawl, according to the Russian Federal Service for Execution of Punishment. Some media put the number of brawlers at 50 while others claimed that the scuffle allegedly involved as many as 200 people. At least 20 inmates are reported injured with four being inmates taken to hospital following the brawl.
The rioters barricaded themselves in the barracks at some point but eventually surrendered when the police special forces arrived. Prison authorities say that guards did not have to use any force or special means to calm down the fight and no one of the guards was attacked, yet they put the facility on lockdown.
The demands of the riot instigators were “unlawful,” a regional ombudsperson, Irina Kasyanova explained. The list of their demands included the free use of mobile phones and the freedom to move around the penal facility, she said, adding that the inmates also urged the prison authorities to release those put into penal confinement over the violations of the prison order.
Some news outlets, however, reported that the inmates were dissatisfied with poor incarceration conditions and complained about beating and abuse. “They wanted to attract attention of the authorities,” a police source told the Novosibirsk media outlet, the NGS Novosti. Local reports also said that a banner reading “help us!” was put on a wall of one of the prison barracks at some point but was then briefly removed.
None of these reports has been confirmed by the officials so far. The riot was instigated by “some 12 inmates,” according to Kasyanova.
Police has opened a probe into the incident. The instigators could face additional prison terms ranging from eight to twelve years in jail. The incident comes following a series of media reports about the alleged beatings and torture of inmates by prison staff in several penal institutions across Russia.
The reports as well as videos of alleged abuse released by the media prompted the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Gennadiy Korniyenko, to order all penal institutions to regularly report on conditions in which inmates are kept.

A dazzling fireball has streaked over several towns in Western Siberia. Stunned locals managed to film the object as it sped by glowing yellow and green.
The even was recorded in the towns of Yugansk and Surgut on Saturday night.
People gazing at the fireball and watching the video have been guessing if that was a meteor or maybe a UFO.
Since the fireball appeared to be gliding steadily across the night skies rather than crashing into the earth, some suggested the stunned locals may have witnessed a spacecraft’s stages burning up in the atmosphere.
It has been reported that the object landed in a remote area and no one has been injured.
There has not been any official explanation of the mysterious flyby so far, with the emergencies ministry saying it is unaware of whatever dazzled the locals.

A group of Russian scientists have successfully revived two species of tiny worms that they discovered suspended in an icy chunk of Siberian permafrost.
The worms, known as nematodes or more commonly as roundworms, had been frozen for up to 42,000 years, since a time when much of the planet was covered in ice.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Italy’s civil protection agency has sent the army to clear the streets of Rome following the first snowfall in six years. The move comes amid an Arctic blast which has claimed at least four lives across Europe.
Part of Rome experienced snow falls of up to 5cm (2 inches) after temperatures fell as low as zero degrees Celcius (32F) Monday, and are expected to drop as low as minus six by Wednesday reports The Local. Several of the city’s most iconic attractions, including the Colosseum and Roman Forum, were closed Monday. The civil protection agency’s volunteer corps was also sent to assist stranded commuters at the city’s railway stations.

Air, road and rail transport were all affected, with delays of up to two hours affecting commuters and tourists alike. Authorities in Rome opened several train stations to the city’s homeless population to provide temporary emergency shelter from the cold, a move which Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni praised online.
While residents of eastern Europe or Moscow might balk at such moderate winter temperatures causing so much chaos, Rome was almost paralyzed by just a few inches of snow. The city’s proximity to the sea usually protects it from snowfall and the Mediterranean climate generally brings milder winters to the capital than its northern European counterparts.
Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi ordered public schools to close temporarily until the ‘blizzard’ passes. Northern and central Italy are more acclimatized to snow but schools in those areas were also forced to close as temperatures plunged.
Massive snowball fights took place across the city while the iconic Bernini fountains were covered in a powdery layer. Siberian winds have been blamed as the source of the cold snap affecting large swathes of Europe.
Temperatures in Bucharest, Romania fell as low minus eight degrees Celsius Monday, with the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations calling in 5,000 officials to help people adversely affected by the cold snap. Neighboring Bulgaria experienced snowdrifts of as much as 40cm (16 inches) in some parts.
Meanwhile, in Germany, certain parts have reported record low temperatures of minus 27 degrees Celsius (minus 16.6F). Croatia has also deployed up to 1,000 troops to clear snow in the worst-affected areas which have been ground to a halt by up to 1.5 meters (5ft) of snow, reports The State.

Snow is set to hit the UK tonight, according to the Met Office weather forecast.
The Siberian freeze, which is also being called “Beast from the East”, is set to hit the UK tonight and last until early March.
Britons are best advised to batten down the hatches and prepare for a week of bitterly cold weather thanks to the freezing winds from Russia.
How likely is it that temperatures will fall to lower than -10C?
Betting has been suspended on this being the coldest February on record by Ladbrokes.
The bookies now make it just an even-money shot that the UK sees temperatures of -10C or lower this week.
Meanwhile, odds of the mercury dropping to -15C over the coming days have been trimmed for the second time this weekend from 5/2 to just 9/4.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “The Big Freeze is showing no signs of budging and we reckon this month looks set to be a record breaker.”
What is the Siberian freeze?
These freezing winds are coming in from the Siberia, a vast and bitterly cold area in Russia.
In fact, exile to Siberia was a punishment created by the Tsar in Russia, that could be applied by law, which would have made for a punishing existent – if you survived.
The winds mean it could well feel as cold at -15C in Britain next week.
Tonight’s show showers were initially predicted for Monday afternoon, but have been brought forwards as the winds descend upon the country.
Will it snow in your area?
To find out if it will snow in your area and when, you can visit UK Snow Map.
The online snow tracker uses crowd-sourcing to create an up-to-the-minute map of exactly where it is snow in the UK at any given moment.
Next time you complain about your morning commute, think of this 76-year-old Siberian woman who skates across the world’s deepest lake, wearing a pair of skates from 1943, in order to take care of her cows.
When Lake Baikal freezes during the winter, Lyubov Morekhodova’s cows ramble across the frozen ice sheet and the hardy farmer has to don her trusty old skates to make sure they are okay.
The skates were made by her father and they strap on to a pair of traditional Russian Valenki boots, which keep the grandmother’s feet warm. Morekhodova became an internet sensation when her friend posted a video of her on Instagram, and she has since attracted attention from Russian TV networks.

The fearless septuagenarian skates over large cracks in the lake, completely unperturbed by any threat that the ice may give way.
“I’ve always been going long distances on skates,” she told the Siberian Times. “I started skating when I was seven.”
“I don’t like modern skates, they wobble around my ankle and feet get cold. Valenki are always warm.”
The grandmother has lived alone on the shores of the lake since her husband died in 2011. She gets up at 5:30am every day to feed her cows and light her stove.
“We live a happy life here, me and my animals. In summer I get to see all my relatives, and in winters I am way too busy to get bored.”

Video footage of a truck driving across the ramshackle Kuandinsky bridge in Siberia will have you on the edge of your seat.
The dilapidated bridge, which spans the Vitim River, is one of the most perilous crossings on the planet.
The 20m (66 feet) high bridge is barely wide enough to fit a car and doesn’t have a safety railing, so even the slightest misstep can be fatal. The columns supporting the bridge are crumbling with rust and the wooden sleepers that form the crossing appear decayed and broken.
Yet despite the terrifying condition of the bridge, one daring traveller chanced a crossing in his truck, capturing the journey on video. The footage shows the rickety bridge as the vehicle bumps along the 500m (1,640 feet) long path.
In winter, the bridge becomes even more treacherous as the timber ices over and tyres struggle to get any traction.
The crossing, which runs parallel to a railway bridge, is in the Trans-Baikal region. It’s part of the famous BAM road, one of the most testing and dangerous adventure roads in the world, according to the Dangerous Roads website.

The Siberian outpost of Oymyakon is officially the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth – yet residents incredibly go about their day-to-day routines despite bone-chilling temperatures of -62C (-80F).
In fact, it’s quite possible that it’s even colder than -62C, given that the Siberian Times reports the town’s digital thermometer stopped working when it reached that mark – because of the chilling cold.
While it might provide an interesting photo op for tourists, natives of Russia’s Yakutia Republic take it in their stride. The biting temperature is not an excuse to stay indoors, even for the youngest residents of the coldest place on Earth. “Our country holidays,” wrote one woman, who added a photo of her son in the snowy countryside.
Local schoolchildren were finally allowed to skip classes after temperatures in the village dropped below -53C – the threshold after which schools must close. Yet when temperatures fell to -50C in November, the kids attended classes as normal. That qualifies as a no-excuses environment.
Meanwhile, Nastya, 24, got widespread traction on Instagram after adding a photo of herself with eyelashes turned white like icicles. “Minus 47C, 15-20 minutes’ walk and you get natural mascara on your eyelashes,” she says.
A video showing a smiling nine-year-old boy brushing snow off the back of a horse as it stands in a snow-covered paddock typifies the fortitude of residents.
“For us these temperatures are a common thing. It’s strange that journalists call and ask how we live there. I say: you come and see for yourself. We live an ordinary life,” says Semyon Vinokurov, who shot the video.
To give tourists some credit, these Chinese ‘ice’ visitors showed an impressive willingness to brave the freezing temperatures as they stripped and danced before taking a swim in the local springs.
In 1933, when temperatures dipped to -68C, the town earned a place in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ as the coldest permanently-inhabited place on Earth. Only Antarctica gets colder.

The Siberian unicorn – long believed to have died out 350,000 years ago – was actually still alive as recently as 29,000 years ago, according to the analysis of a well-preserved skull found in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan.
Unicorn enthusiasts will be disappointed to learn that the extinct creature – also known as Elasmotherium sibiricum – had more in common with rhinos or woolly mammoths than fictional unicorns, however.
It is believed to have been up to 2 meters (6.6ft) tall, and 4.5 meters (14.7ft) in length. It weighed in at a whopping four tons, and was equipped with a large horn in the middle of its forehead.
Researchers at Tomsk State University managed to date the furry beast to around 29,000 years ago, thanks to radiocarbon-dating techniques. They believe the specimen discovered in Kazakhstan was a male but have yet to determine the cause of its death.
“Most likely, the south of Western Siberia was a refugium, where this rhino persevered the longest in comparison with the rest of its range,” said Andrey Shpanski, one of the researchers, as cited by Science Alert.
“There is another possibility that it could migrate and dwell for a while in the more southern areas.”
In addition to ancient giant viruses buried beneath the permafrost, the shaggy Siberian unicorn would have shared the taiga and tundra with a host of other strange characters.
Mammoths
The world’s best-preserved woolly mammoth, Lyuba, 42,000-years old, was found near the Yuribey River in Russia’s Ural mountains in 2007 and has toured museums around the world ever since.
Unidentified monster
This creature was discovered in the world’s third-deepest open-pit diamond mine, Udachnaya, near the town of Udachny in the Sakha Republic.
It has yet to be properly identified but speculation is rife that it may either be a dinosaur or the gnarled and mummified remains of a sable or marten. It is estimated to date back as long as 252 million years ago.
Sharp fangs indicate this monster, whatever it was, had a taste for flesh.
Siberian lions
Siberia’s permafrost also helped preserve these two extinct cave lions, which were found in the Sakha Republic in 2015. The Panthera spelaea roamed Earth during the Middle and Late Pleistocene, roughly 781,000 to 11,700 years ago.
Denisovans
Denisovans were ancient pre-humans, who differed genetically from the likes of Neanderthals, Cro-Magnons and Homo heidelbergensis. They escaped the bitter cold of Siberia by taking shelter in caves. Remains discovered in Russia’s Altai region in 2010 are believed to date back as long 110,000 years ago.
Siberian Ice Maiden
The 2,500-year-old remains of an extraordinarily well-preserved Siberian ‘Princess of Ukok’ were discovered on the Ukok Plateau in the Altay Mountains in 1993. The woman’s remains were replete with tattoos, and she was found buried with a troupe of horses and a small stash of cannabis.

Monuments to the 1917 Revolution’s leader Vladimir Lenin can be found in most Russian cities, but Siberia’s Krasnoyarsk may now have the most unusual one. Unlike the original, the pixelated Lenin won’t live forever, as it is made of cardboard.
The cardboard Lenin statue looks like it has come right out of the world of popular computer game Minecraft. It was unveiled in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk as part of an art project at a local state museum on Thursday. Incidentally, it is situated in Karl Marx street.
The pixelated Lenin stands in his iconic pose with left arm outstretched. The statue is placed atop one of the platforms near a local museum center, which was itself named after the revolutionary leader until the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991.
The creator of the “Minecraft” Lenin, Aleksandr Zakirov, told Russian media that his work of art is meant to honor Lenin’s “visual image” as it had become a kind of “brand” long ago.
“Monuments to Lenin have recently been demolished only, but I have erected one,” Zakirov said. He added that his creation will last only one month, as it is made of cardboard and will soon get soaked in the snowy city.

Not everyone is happy with such an image of the leader of the October 1917 Russian revolution, which marked its centennial in early November. The leader of Krasnoyarsk’s Communist Party denounced the idea and called it “a mockery.” Speaking to Govorit Moskva radio station he vowed to demolish the monument.
