Casting news is happening! In this edition of Casting Bits, we’ve rounded up the latest casting news for your reading pleasure. John Lithgow has joined Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie in Annapurna’s Fox News movie; Lauren Ambrose will star in M. Night Shyamalan‘s Apple series; and Castle Rock‘s Jane Levy is climbing aboard Netflix’s new anthology series What/If.

John Lithgow is Roger Ailes

John Lithgow is staying booked. The actor was recently cast in the Pet Sematary remake, and now he’s moving on to yet another horror story: a movie about Fox News. THR says Lithgow has joined the already impressive cast of Annapurna’s currently untitled Fox News movie. Lithgow will play Roger Ailes, the late founder of Fox News and the man more or less responsible for our current political hellscape. The rest of the cast includes Charlize Theron, as Megyn Kelly, Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, and Margot Robbie as a Fox News associate producer. Kelly and Carlson both accused Ailes of sexual misconduct, forcing Ailes to resign in 2016. This cast is already pretty damn phenomenal, but it might get even better. Collider’s Jeff Sneider revealed on Twitter that Allison Janney and Kate McKinnon have both been offered parts in the film as well.

I’m not exactly chomping at the bit for a movie about Fox News, but with a cast like this, I can’t ignore it either.

Lauren Ambrose in M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple Series 

Lauren Ambrose, of Six Feet Under fame, is joining M. Night Shyamalan’s new Apple series, according to Deadline. The series “follows parents Dorothy and Sean Turner, who have hired young nanny Leanne to help care for their newborn child.” Since the show is being described as a thriller, I’m guessing something goes wrong. Maybe the nanny is evil. Or the parents are evil. Or the newborn child is evil. Someone is going to be evil, folks. Ambrose will play the mother of the child, and Nell Tiger Free will play the nanny. The untitled series was created by Tony Basgallop, with Shyamalan executive producing and directing the first episode. This is just one of several original programs Apple has lined up for their yet-to-be-named streaming service. Ambrose is very talented, and I’ve been team M. Night since day one, so I’m all-in on this.

 

Jane Levy Castle Rock

Jane Levy Joins What/If

Jane Levy, who can currently be seen on Hulu’s Castle Rock, is sticking with the the world of streaming. She’ll jump from Hulu to Netflix for What/If, a anthology show starring Renée Zellweger. Per TV Line, What/If is a “social thriller that explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing bad, bad things.” Every season tackles a “different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life.” Not quite sure what a “social thriller” is, but sure, this sounds promising.

Tales From the Crypt‘s resurrection from the dead, helmed by horror connoisseur M. Night Shyamalan, has been cut short.

TNT’s planned reboot of the horror-camp anthology series that ran from 1989 to 1996 had a 10-episode order with Shyamalan on board to curate short and long-form horror stories, and a new Cryptkeeper planned to host. But TNT president Kevin Reilly revealed that Tales From the Crypt, and the weekly two-hour horror block the network had planned around it, had to be axed because of rights issues.

Shyamalan was on a roll recently, kicking his career back into gear with surprise hits like The Visit and Split, and now launching his own veritable cinematic universe with Glass, the next sequel to his comic book genre-bending hit Unbreakable (after Split).

His streak looked like it would continue with his reboot of Tales From the Crypt, the campy, B-movie style horror anthology that ran on HBO in the early ’90s. Shyamalan would curate and presumably direct some of the episodes for the show, which was planned to be the centerpiece of TNT’s new weekly two-hour horror programming block, alongside newly commissioned horror shows Time of Death and Creatures. But that progress for the horror shows came to a screeching halt when TNT ran into trouble getting rights for Tales From the Crypt.

Reilly revealed in an interview with Birth.Movies.Death that for the time being, Tales From the Crypt will remain dead in the ground:

“That one got really caught up in a complete legal mess unfortunately with a very complicated underlying rights structure. We lost so much time, so I said, ‘Look, I’m not waiting around four years for this thing’. Maybe that will come back around but in the meantime, Ridley Scott had come up, who has so much creative enthusiasm.”

A ray of hope shines within that pile of bad news for Crypt fans — Ridley Scott will be coming onboard TNT develop a sci-fi block, which the network plans to debut in 2018. There’s no news on which pilots or series will be picked up for the block, but Reilly said, “it could be a series order. When you got Ridley, there are projects he is potentially interested in getting directly involved.”

And what of the horror block? Is Tales From the Crypt‘s absence going to deal a fatal blow on the other two shows that TNT commissioned?

Reilly told Birth.Movies.Death that he hasn’t “ruled out” continuing the block without Tales From the Crypt: “We don’t have a specific property today but we’re open to it.”

This is a bummer for Tales From the Crypt fans, but at least both Shyamalan and TNT seem to have enough projects that this doesn’t leave either of them in a rough place. Perhaps to avoid rights issues, Shyamalan can take his reboot ideas to HBO, because it seems a shame to deprive the world of more of Shyamalan and Crypt‘s B-movie schlock.

M Night Shyamalan has announced that Universal Pictures will release his next film, an Unbreakable sequel titled Glass, on January 18, 2019 all over the world. Hit the jump for more info including returning cast/characters.

The filmmaker revealed the news on twitter this morning.

Okay. Here we go. Finished the new script. It’s taken 17 years but I can finally answer the #1 question I get, “Are you making a f#&@ing sequel to Unbreakable or what?” My new film is the sequel to #Unbreakable AND #Split. It was always my dream to have both films collide in this third film. The iconic Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn. The incomparable @SamuelLJackson will return as Elijah Price/Mr. Glass. The incomparable @SamuelLJackson will return as Elijah Price/Mr. Glass. And the prodigy, @AnyaTaylorJoy will return as Casey Cooke. And the film is called GLASS… Universal Pictures will release #Glass on January 18, 2019 all over the world. How’s that for not keeping a secret!

I have to admit, Glass is a fucking awesome title for an Unbreakable sequel. I’m a huge fan of the original movie and had all but given up hope for Unbreakable 2 until earlier this year when it was revealed Shyamalan was working to make it happen. Of course, the big reveal came in (spoiler alert, highlight to reveal) the ending of Split, which revealed that both films took place in the same universe.

An Unbreakable sequel has been talked about for the last seventeen years with star Bruce Willis initially flaming the fires with the hopes for a trilogy of Unbreakable films. Touchstone Pictures originally turned down the idea for a sequel because of the film’s poor box office performance, but the movie developed a huge fandom on home video.

After the very successful release of Split, Shyamalan expressed hope for a third installment, saying, “I hope [a third Unbreakable film happens]. The answer is yes. I’m just such a wimp sometimes. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I go off in my room, a week after this film opens, to write the script. But I’m going to start writing. [I have] a really robust outline, which is pretty intricate. But now the standards for my outlines are higher. I need to know I’ve won already. I’m almost there but I’m not quite there.”

It’s also interesting to note that Universal Pictures and not Disney’s Touchtone Pictures will be distributing the sequel.

M. Night Shyamalan is enjoying something of a career resurgence right now. His last two films (The Visit and Split) did well critically and commercially, his TV drama Wayward Pines was well received, and his Unbreakable looks like it might finally get that long-awaited sequel.

Next up on his to-do list for this year was supposed to be Tales from the Crypt, a resurrection of the classic anthology horror series, but rights issues might be keeping that one six feet under for the time being. For whatever it’s worth, TNT has insisted we’ll see the show eventually. While we wait, though, a couple of videos have surfaced to give us a little taste of what Shyamalan’s got in store. Bloody Disgusting dug up the Tales from the Crypt promo videos. One appears to be a proof-of-concept pitch, piecing together footage from other shows and movies (everything from Unfriended to The Cell to Paranormal Activity to Shyamalan’s own The Happening). It’s an effectively creepy montage, even if a lot of the imagery is familiar. Meanwhile, Shyamalan gushes about what the show means to him:

Tales from the Crypt was always kind of a forbidden fruit of my childhood. It was edgy. I think it was ahead of its time. This dark, ironic tone is probably the thing that draws me to this source material and really where I am as a storyteller.What if we did an evening of television, the gateway to all the best genre TV. You can do drama, humor, a reality show for half an hour, a ten-minute short. You’re going to sit with us the whole evening, a destination for the highest level of storytelling. The Cryptkeeper is definitely going to be a part of the evening. Someone that draws us in, like the dark Walt Disney. This is like candy for me.

The other video seems more like an actual promo for the series, and shows a janitor mopping with his headphones on, initially oblivious to a shadowy figure banging its head outside on the glass. The mysterious whatever-it-is eventually shatters the window and makes its way into the hallway. It’s a disturbing image and fits nicely with the accompanying text: “Some tales just won’t get out of your head.” You can watch the first video here and the second one here.

Shyamalan has been developing the new Tales From the Crypt for over a year, and TNT gave it an official full-season order last spring. The show plans to combine original standalone and serialized plots, comic book storylines, and even crowdsourced ideas into an anthology drama to air sometime in 2017. However, TNT and TBS president Kevin Reilly has acknowledged that the rights for Tales From a Crypt were “a disaster” (for example, HBO owns the Crypt Keeper), and recently there have been rumblings that legal issues are tying up the series.
