The New York Times reported this evening that Apple entered into a partnership with Volkswagen Group to pair a number of electric T6 Transporter vans with Apple’s proprietary autonomous vehicle software. The vans will reportedly be used to shuttle employees around Apple’s company campus, and it’s not clear whether the deal will extend from there.

The Times says that this deal only comes after Apple tried to find a partner in BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company has shed hundreds of employees on the project, in a department that once boasted about 1,000 workers.

According to the Times‘ sources—”five people familiar with the negotiations who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly”—BMW and Mercedes-Benz rejected a partnership with Apple due to requirements from the Cupertino-based firm to turn over all data and some design aspects of the car.

Enlarge / Officials announcing the driverless shuttle program in Las Vegas in January. (credit: Navya)

Wednesday was supposed to be the triumphant launch of a free, driverless shuttle in downtown Las Vegas. Designed by French company Navya, operated by another French company called Keolis, and sponsored by the city and American Automobile Association, the year-long pilot project was supposed to demonstrate the potential of slow-moving autonomous vehicles to change the transit industry.

Instead, within hours, the project was greeted with the worst possible headline: “Self-driving shuttle bus in crash on first day.”

The headline, and lots of others like it, were technically accurate but a little misleading. Officials say the other vehicle—a semi truck that bumped into the shuttle while backing up—was at fault. And it was such a low-speed collision that no one was injured. The accident “merely dented the plastic panels on the front of the shuttle,” according to Jeff Zurschmeide of Digital Trends.

Arlington, TX gets autonomous shuttles for Cowboys, Rangers games https://briefnews.eu/arlington-tx-gets-autonomous-shuttles-for-cowboys-rangers-games/ https://briefnews.eu/arlington-tx-gets-autonomous-shuttles-for-cowboys-rangers-games/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 18:34:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arlington-tx-gets-autonomous-shuttles-for-cowboys-rangers-games/

While the world is intensely focused, with no small amount of hand-wringing, on the future of autonomous consumer cars, self-driving vehicles are quietly deploying in certain cities. They’re not really the types of vehicles we think of when discussing the dangers and ethics of driverless cars, and they’re pretty warmly welcomed in the communities they serve. They’re also, at least for now, more limited in their capabilities, servicing fixed routes (sometimes not even roads shared with other traffic) at slow speeds. Still, they’re popping up around the world and giving rides with no human driver at the wheel.

The latest city to benefit from autonomous vehicles is Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys football team and Texas Rangers baseball team. Beginning August 26, the French-made EasyMile electric shuttles will operate in the City’s Entertainment District on days of Rangers and Cowboys games, as well as during concerts and other events at the stadiums. The Milo shuttles, as they’re called, will operate on fixed routes on paved trails near the venues. They’re free to ride, can seat 12 people, and are wheelchair accessible. These shuttles can go up to 20 miles per hour, but will only operate at 10 to 12 mph. They’re able to stop for pedestrians or other obstacles on their own, but the shuttles will also have a certified operator on board to hit the stop button if needed.

The city says this is a pilot program that will run through mid-2018, as Arlington explores the possibility of using autonomous transportation technology in a larger setting. Transportation Advisory Committee Chair Bill Verkest is optimistic that people will come to trust the technology. “It’s kind of like an airplane,” he said. “At one time we didn’t know if you could put a plane on automatic pilot and it would fly itself. Well, this is new technology and as technology improves, people accept it.”

Arlington joins Ann Arbor in welcoming autonomous shuttles to its city. The University of Michigan is using vehicles made by Navya, another French company, to help students get around campus. In France, Delphi and Transdev are launching autonomous vehicle pilot programs, which will include driverless shuttles as well. Autonomous shuttles from EasyMile are also ferrying passengers in the Netherlands.

An intrepid group of YouTubers have taken on their most daring adventure yet – breaking into an active spaceport to find two of the few remaining Soviet-era space shuttles.

After navigating their way across barren flatland, members of the group, which publishes videos as Exploring the Unbeaten Path, dodge boobytraps and security patrols to steal into an abandoned hangar at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

What they find inside does not disappoint.

The cavernous hangar holds two shuttles from the Buran shuttle program, a project aimed at developing Russia’s first reusable spacecraft. The slow collapse of the Soviet Union hamstrung the project, which was eventually suspended by cash-strapped Russia in 1993 after just one unmanned mission.

The one working Buran prototype was crushed when a hangar collapsed during a storm at Baikonur in 2002. Another test vehicle resides at the Technik Museum Speyer in Germany.

The adventurers climb in and around the shuttles, capturing some jaw-dropping material for their YouTube channel.

Aware that they are trespassing in an area leased by the Russian government for launching commercial and military space hardware, the group constantly keeps an eye out for passing soldiers.

Lucky for us, the group took the risk getting inside, so we don’t have to.

The video of the Soviet orbiter is just one of a series for Exploring the Unbeaten Path. The group, led by Dutch filmmaker Bob Thissen, has explored other sites around the world, including an abandoned castle, a quarry filled with classic cars, and a defunct asylum.

Autonomous shuttles start this fall at University of Michigan https://briefnews.eu/autonomous-shuttles-start-this-fall-at-university-of-michigan/ https://briefnews.eu/autonomous-shuttles-start-this-fall-at-university-of-michigan/#respond Thu, 22 Jun 2017 18:26:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/autonomous-shuttles-start-this-fall-at-university-of-michigan/

Starting this fall, the University of Michigan will start offering students rides on fully autonomous electric shuttles. The two 15-passenger vehicles will operate on U of M’s north campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The project is part of Mcity, the faux town set up in Ann Arbor that was designed as a testbed for autonomous vehicles. Mcity itself is a U of M-led collaboration among several public and private enterprises.

The two shuttles are manufactured by French company Navya. The Arma model looks similar to the Local Motors Olli, no surprise as both vehicles serve essentially the same sort of purpose. Arma shuttles have been operating in Sion, Switzerland, for more than a year now, proving that the technology works well enough in limited applications. We even had a chance to ride along in one at this year’s CES.

The Arma uses a 33-kWh LiFePO4 battery and has a run time of about nine hours, good enough for a full day’s duty on Michigan’s campus. Recharging can be done both with or without wires, through wireless charging does take significantly longer. The run speed is 15 mph, though an Arma can reach a blistering 28 mph with all tethers removed. The shuttles use Lidar, GPS, WiFi, and traditional cameras to navigate around a pre-set route.

In this case, the two shuttles will run on a nonstop loop from the Lurie Engineering Center and the North Campus Research Complex. Both shuttles will cover the route in 10 minutes, and there is no charge for passengers. The project will be used to gauge reactions from both passengers and surrounding pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Mcity and Navya seem to be making a big leap with their partnership. The French company just announced a new manufacturing facility in Southeast Michigan. The facility will produce more Arma shuttles, presumably for use at locations around the country.

The University of Michigan is a hotbed for self-driving car research, so it stands to reason that students and faculty should use self-driving vehicles to get around, right? The university clearly thinks so. Mcity (the university’s public-private partnership) is launching a free driverless shuttle service that will see two 15-passenger Navya Arma vehicles transport people between the university’s North Campus Research Complex and the Lurie Engineering Center. This will make the 2-mile trip easier for travelers tired of taking campus buses, as you might guess, but it’ll also serve as an experiment in its own right.

The Mcity team will closely watch how people react to the shuttles — whether or not they’re aboard. Outside cameras will monitor how people behave around the vehicles, while researchers will also measure ridership numbers and patterns. This should influence when and where the shuttles drive (they’re currently limited to that one route and regular business hours), and promises safer, more efficient self-driving vehicles in the future. All told, the university could learn a lot about autonomy just by fulfilling some of its own needs.

Shuttle’s new XPC nano PCs run on ARM https://briefnews.eu/shuttles-new-xpc-nano-pcs-run-on-arm/ https://briefnews.eu/shuttles-new-xpc-nano-pcs-run-on-arm/#respond Sat, 22 Apr 2017 03:22:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shuttles-new-xpc-nano-pcs-run-on-arm/

Whenever I buy a Raspberry Pi I like to tell myself I’ll do all sorts of cool projects with it and reinvent the face of IoT, but usually I just end up with a cheap, underpowered ARM computer that runs Linux and never takes advantage of all the I/O pins.

The new Shuttle XPC nano NS02A and NS02E (via Liliputing) cut through the lies I tell myself and simply offer a relatively high-powered ARM chip in a fairly small box. Android 5.1 is pre-installed, so that’s lame, but hopefully you can get regular Linux up and running without much hassle.

The $ 150-ish machines both run on a Rockchip RK3368 octa-core processor, include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of flash storage, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and room inside for a 2.5-inch hard drive. The only difference between the two models is one runs off a power adapter, while the other can be powered over Ethernet.

Now that I think about it, I’d probably be better off getting a Chromebook. The RK3368 is powerful enough to do 4K video at 60 fps, so maybe this machine would work in a home theater, but the shortage of RAM would struggle with modern web browsing.

Oh well, maybe next year will be the year of the ARM desktop.

Uber May Someday Give Californians Rides in Totally Driverless 12-Passenger Shuttles https://briefnews.eu/uber-may-someday-give-californians-rides-in-totally-driverless-12-passenger-shuttles/ https://briefnews.eu/uber-may-someday-give-californians-rides-in-totally-driverless-12-passenger-shuttles/#respond Fri, 07 Apr 2017 09:10:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uber-may-someday-give-californians-rides-in-totally-driverless-12-passenger-shuttles/ FRANCE-TRANSPORT-AUTOMOBILE-TECHNOLOGY-RATP

Uber could be offering autonomous rides in California in the future, thanks to a pilot test of completely driverless shuttles and some friendly legislation.

–

The vehicles are EasyMile EZ10s, 12-person electric shuttles capable of driving at speeds up to 30 mph without an operator. Like Uber’s self-driving Volvos, which are already giving rides in Pittsburgh and Arizona, the EZ10s use cameras, lidar, and highly accurate GPS sensors. But the EZ10 does not have a human safety driver or even a steering wheel on board, relying instead on fleet-management software for remote monitoring and control.

–

Two of the $ 250,000 EZ10s have just started testing at the Bishop Ranch business park in San Ramon, 35 miles east of San Francisco, after completing tests at GoMentum Station, an autonomous-vehicle testing center on an old naval weapons base in nearby Concord. Ultimately, the business park wants driverless shuttles to transport workers to and from transit stops, reducing road and parking congestion.

–

The local Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) is running the tests, and early last year CCTA executive director Randell Iwasaki approached Uber to see if the company was interested in the project.

“Uber understands where people are, where they want to go, and where vehicles should be positioned accordingly.”
-— Bryant Walker Smith, University of South Carolina

–

”

–

–

“We’re always looking for first- and last-mile connectivity,” he said. “We’re trying to find the sweet spot between the number of the shuttles and the penetration” of transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft.

–

According to documents obtained by Car and Driver under public-records legislation, Uber met with representatives of the CCTA last February. In an email to Kellyn Blossom, Uber’s head of public policy for the West Coast, Iwasaki wrote: “I am really intrigued by a potential collaboration with our [EasyMile] first-mile/last-mile concept. We are looking for a partner to provide an iOS solution.”

–

EasyMile shuttle rides could be integrated into Uber’s smartphone app, perhaps as part of UberPOOL, the company’s fixed-fare dynamic carpool service that matches multiple riders headed in the same direction. In May, a mobility manager working for CCTA proposed using UberPOOL to channel financial incentives to local residents for using the service for work-related trips. The agency also met with Apple in September to discuss “commute alternatives” such as ride sharing and carpooling.

Uber said it does not currently have a partnership with Bishop Ranch, but the business park could be attractive to the company, because it is the only place in California where autonomous vehicles are allowed to drive on public roads without human safety drivers. Last fall, the California assembly passed a bill that permits the testing of autonomous vehicles that operate without a driver, steering wheel, brake pedal, or accelerator—but only at Bishop Ranch.

–

“This partnership would make sense,” commented Bryant Walker-Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina and an expert in the regulation of automated vehicles. “Uber understands where people are, where they want to go, and where vehicles should be positioned accordingly. The effective deployment of automated-vehicle fleets will depend on this kind of data and algorithms. Other researchers have explored how automated ride sharing could work in cities like New York and Singapore. Bishop Ranch is obviously much smaller, but it’s a place to start.”

–

–

If the autonomous rides do happen, it will be Uber’s second attempt in California. The company started giving rides in self-driving Volvos in San Francisco last December, but the California Department of Motor Vehicles quickly canceled their registrations because the company refused to apply for a testing permit and after one of its cars was spotted running a red light. Uber now has a permit, under which its cars are not allowed to pick up passengers.

–

EasyMile’s shuttles also need a DMV permit, which Iwasaki is about to apply for. The CCTA expects to start transporting workers around the business park later this year. “If the pilot works out, we’re going to roll a lot of these vehicles out to provide first- and last-mile connectivity,” said Iwasaki. “And if it works here, it can probably work in any other city in America.”
