In an effort to address brand confusion triggered by the arrival of HBO Max, WarnerMedia is shuttering HBO Go and rebranding HBO Now (as simply HBO).

In a statement, WarnerMedia says, “Now that HBO Max has launched and is widely distributed, we… will be sunsetting our HBO GO service in the U.S. We intend to remove the HBO GO app from primary platforms as of July 31, 2020. Most customers who have traditionally used HBO GO to stream HBO programming are now able to do so via HBO Max, which offers access to all of HBO together with so much more. Additionally, the HBO NOW app and desktop experience will be rebranded to HBO. Existing HBO NOW subscribers will have access to HBO through the rebranded HBO app on platforms where it remains available and through play.hbo.com. HBO Max provides not only the robust offering of HBO but also a vast WarnerMedia library and acquired content and originals through a modern product.”

HBO Now launched in 2015 as, essentially, a precursor to HBO Max: a standalone subscription service giving cable-averse users access to HBO’s library of original programs, films and other content. HBO Go, meanwhile, bowed in 2010 and allowed current HBO subscribers to stream the cabler’s content on secondary devices.

HBO Max, which launched on May 27, costs $ 14.99 per month, though current HBO subscribers with select cable providers (along with HBO Now subscribers) were given immediate access to the service at no additional cost. One of many wrinkles that still need to be worked out: HBO Max remains unavailable on Roku or Fire TV.

Here at Ars Technica, we’re contemplating our own Rogue One-style heist adventure in the near future. In our case, instead of sending rebel troops to die in search of the Death Star’s plans, we’re thinking about ordering a few clumsy nerds to steal the Rolodex and contact list of Kotaku’s Jason Schreier.

I mean, not really, but the Star Wars metaphor is apt today, as the reporter published a massive story on Friday that explains what went down behind the scenes before EA pulled a “close a studio and cancel a game” double-whammy last week. In his report, Schreier cites “nearly a dozen” anonymous sources from the worlds of EA and its former subsidiary Visceral Games.

The lengthy report expands on Schreier’s own claims last week that Visceral’s closure came for reasons that weren’t apparent in the official EA announcement. Instead, its closure, and the shutdown of a game project codenamed Ragtag, boiled down to a general stink over a costly and badly organized production period, not to mention the awkward shoehorning of EA’s Frostbite graphics engine (which EA had mandated the studio to use). “Like BioWare on Dragon Age and Mass Effect, Visceral found itself trying to make a third-person game on an engine built for first-person shooters,” Schreier writes, and, based on Andromeda‘s woes, it’s not hard to imagine the havoc that he says resulted.

It’s been a hell of a roller coaster ride for digital media company Mode Media these past few years. From an IPO that never happened to the company abruptly shutting down last September, Mode keeps popping up on our radar. Today, New York-based bridal advertising network BrideClick announced that it has acquired Mode Media’s U.S. and European assets for an undisclosed price. According to a spokesperson, it was at a significant discount on Mode Media’s one-time $ 1 billion valuation.

BrideClick has acquired the Glam, Foodie, Bliss, Tend, Brash, and Mode brands; intellectual property, including a social publishing and social media distribution technology; an ad server; and 100,000 pieces of content. The company will merge BrideClick with Mode Media to relaunch as Glam in September.

This does not mark the end of the Mode Media brand, however. The company had shut down its U.S. operations last September but announced in January that investment company Montaro had purchased Mode Media Japan. What’s more, Mode Media founder Samir Arora joined as executive chairman, and Ernie Cicogna, Mode’s former chief financial officer, has signed on as director.

BrideClick did not acquire Mode Media’s Japanese assets, and the company explicitly stated that it has no association with Mode Media Japan.

Prior to entering the process of assignment for the benefit of creditors (“ABC”), Mode Media was reportedly doing well financially. It had raised a total of $ 225 million since its founding in 2003, had more than $ 120 million in annual revenue, and was valued at about $ 1 billion. But as VentureBeat reported in March, a series of unfortunate events led to its sudden closure.

Founded in 2010, BrideClick currently has 10 employees, and the company will now hire an editor-in-chief, as well as sales and technology staff, in preparation for the September relaunch.

In its latest transparency report covering the period from July 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016, Twitter said it shuttered a total of 376,890 accounts “for violations related to promotion of terrorism,” bringing the total number of closures for terror-related content to a colossal 636,248 accounts from August 1, 2015 through December 31, 2016.

Faced with such a massive task, Twitter has had to develop proprietary tools designed to automatically identify accounts to take down. The software, which is supported by a team of human investigators, accounted for 74 percent of the most recent batch of reported account closures, the company said.

Twitter, like Facebook and other online giants, has been accused in the past of not doing enough to combat extremist activity on its service. Criticism over the last few years prompted the company to implement more robust procedures such as increasing the size of the teams that respond to reports, and taking any necessary action more quickly.

In addition, the company made efforts to start checking more accounts similar to those reported, while it continues to develop algorithms to automatically surface potentially violating accounts for review.

Twitter said it’s also worked harder to prevent those whose accounts are shuttered from quickly returning to the service, though it hasn’t revealed how exactly it does this.

A turning point in the way online companies deal with terror-related activity online came at the start of last year when leading executives from Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, Google, and others met officials for talks in not only the U.S., but France, too, a country that has suffered multiple terror attacks in recent years.

In December, 2016, the same companies announced they would begin contributing to a shared database holding information on “violent terrorist” material found on the different platforms to help each other remove extremist content more quickly.

Removing such material from online services quickly and efficiently — and keeping it offline — is an ongoing challenge, though Twitter, for one, feels it is making progress, saying last year, “We have already seen results, including an increase in account suspensions and this type of activity shifting off of Twitter.”
