  • The cost of an average starter home in New York City ranges from $ 400,000 to $ 800,000, according to StreetEasy.
  • Starter homes in NYC have shrunk by 9% in the last three years, the real estate marketplace found.
  • The median square footage for a Manhattan home is now equal to that of four-and-a-half parking spots.

The New York City housing market is notorious for buyers willing to pay more for less, but the size of a typical Manhattan starter home in is only getting smaller.

According to a Wednesday report from StreetEasy, starter homes in New York — ranging from $ 400,000 to $ 800,000 — have decreased in size by 9% since the summer of 2019. Although first-time residences in Queens and the Bronx have shrunk the most, Manhattan homes remain the smallest.

At roughly the size of four-and-a-half parking spaces, the median square footage for a Manhattan home as of August is 686 square feet. Homes in Brooklyn have a bit more space at a median of 924 square feet, according to StreetEasy.

Although space in Manhattan is limited, buyers can take comfort in a significantly cheaper price per square foot than five years ago. Prices have decreased by nearly half since 2017 — from $ 1,775 to now $ 942.

If you're looking to put down roots in New York City any time soon, here are some examples from StreetEasy of what you may find on your search for a starter home.

Disney Eyeing Reboots of ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,’ ‘Father of the Bride’ and ‘The Parent Trap’ https://briefnews.eu/disney-eyeing-reboots-of-honey-i-shrunk-the-kids-father-of-the-bride-and-the-parent-trap/ https://briefnews.eu/disney-eyeing-reboots-of-honey-i-shrunk-the-kids-father-of-the-bride-and-the-parent-trap/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 09:08:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disney-eyeing-reboots-of-honey-i-shrunk-the-kids-father-of-the-bride-and-the-parent-trap/ Honey I Shrunk the Kids Remake

Disney already has all hands on deck for live-action remakes of their classic animated movies. We’ve already seen the likes of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book hit theaters and Aladdin, Dumbo, Mulan, Pinocchio, and The Lion King are on the way. But it sounds like Disney is running out of animated movies they want to remake, because now they’re turning their attention to their live-action catalog for remake opportunities.

Buried in the recent news of Disney planning their Muppets reboot for their streaming service, three other projects are mentioned as being in development for the forthcoming subscription service…and they’re all reboots. Apparently, Disney is looking at potentially rebooting (the fancy word for remaking) Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Father of the Bride and The Parent Trap.

The Hollywood Reporter off-handedly mentions the possibility of these reboots in their Muppets report when discussing the new Disney streaming service expected to launch in the fall of 2019. The report says:

“The Disney brand extension is expected to make a heavy push into film with an eye on Disney’s robust library of family titles. The Parent Trap (1998), Father of the Bride (1991) and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) are among the first projects on the table for potential film reboots, sources say.”

It should be noted that this only says Disney is looking at these movies for “potential film reboots.” That doesn’t mean they’re in active development or anything like that, but Disney is probably trying to figure out if there is interest in these projects and whether or not they can make them work. So let’s take a look at each of these titles individually.

The Parent Trap Remake

The Parent Trap

The report mentions the 1998 version of The Parent Trap starring young Lindsey Lohan (above) as the title being ripe for a reboot. But that title itself is a remake of Disney’s own 1961 film of the same name with the same premise. The story followed two identical twin sisters who are separated at birth when their parents get divorced, each growing up without knowing the other exists. But when they happen to meet each other, they concoct a plan to reunite their parents and make them fall in love again.

The remake in 1998 with Lindsey Lohan was a favorite of children of the late 1990s, and it led to a successful relationship between Lohan and Disney that lasted several years. That brought us even more Disney nostalgia, with the Lohan remake of the body swap comedy Freaky Friday and The Love Bug sequel Herbie: Fully Loaded. But now it’s probably time for a new generation to have their own version of The Parent Trap.

Father of the Bride Remake

Father of the Bride

Here’s another example of a Disney movie (released through by Buena Vista Pictures through the Touchstone Pictures banner) that was also a remake. The original film was released in 1950 with Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Bennett, but the remake in 1991 starred Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams-Paisley (as well as a hilarious, over-the-top supporting turn by Martin Short). Since the remake (which spawned a sequel in 1995) is now 27 years old, I suppose that’s a good enough reason to try it again. After all, the times have changed a bit, as has the dating scene, so there’s plenty for the George Banks character to be concerned about when his daughter suddenly comes home engaged.

There were rumblings of a new Father of the Bride sequel happening not too long ago that would focus on George Banks’ son (played by a young Kieran Culkin in the first two movies) getting married himself. This take focused on gay marriage, which would have been an interesting topic for a traditional, uptight character George Banks to deal with. A script was said to be written with Steve Martin on board, but the actor said himself on Twitter that wasn’t the case.

A new Father of the Bride with Steve Martin and Diane Keaton as grandparents would be something that I’d turn up for, especially as someone who loves that 1991 remake. But it would take a lot for me to get excited about a reboot with an entirely different cast.

Honey I Shrunk the Kids - Movies Leavng Netflix

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

This 1989 action adventure has been ripe for a reboot for so long that I can’t believe Disney waited until now to make it happen. Special effects technology has improved so much since this film debuted (though those original effects are still top-notch) that this could be quite an epic backyard adventure movie.

The first film (directed by Joe Johnston) followed Rick Moranis as scientist Wayne Szalinski, who builds a machine that can shrink things. Through a series of mishapes, the machine accidentally shrinks his teenage daughter and nerdy adolescent son along with the neighbors’ teenage son and wise-ass adolescent brother. They end up swept up in the trash and left to navigate the backyard in order to get back to their house and hopefully be returned to normal size.

A sequel followed a few years later in 1992, this time seeing Szalinski accidentally enlarge his toddler son to 50 feet. Honey, I Blew Up the Kid is not quite as good as the original, but the twin boys who play the toddler Adam are so damn cute, and it does some fun things that riff on those B-movies about monsters attacking cities.

Then there was an awful straight-to-video sequel called Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves and a TV series focusing on myriad of experiments gone wrong in the Szalinski household. Those two extensions of the franchise were just plain awful, and they’re best left forgotten.

If there’s one live-action Disney movie that I’m actually excited to see get a reboot, it’s this one.

Weight loss: Man lost five stone FAST and shrunk belly fat following THIS simple diet plan https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-man-lost-five-stone-fast-and-shrunk-belly-fat-following-this-simple-diet-plan/ https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-man-lost-five-stone-fast-and-shrunk-belly-fat-following-this-simple-diet-plan/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2017 16:29:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-man-lost-five-stone-fast-and-shrunk-belly-fat-following-this-simple-diet-plan/

Sharing his weight loss transformation before and after pictures to Reddit, ‘percinick’, 24, explained how he lost five stone in just over three months.

After commenters questioned how lost the weight, he said: “I just started eating really clean.

“I reduced my carb intake to 20 carbs per day, calories was between 1400-1700 per day and I worked out 3-4 times per week. Also drank a ton of water and the weight just flew off.”

He also revealed he was “fortunate to not have any extra skin” despite losing so much weight.

Detailing his plan further, and explaining he followed the Keto diet, he said: “I ate high protein. Once I drop another 20 pounds, I’m going increase the calories and try to build some muscle.

“I only drink a post workout shake. I use Gold Standard 100 per cent Whey protein powder.

“It’s got like 26g of protein, 3g carbs, and like 126 calories per serving.”

Percinick also revealed he wants to lose another 20 pounds (one stone four pounds).

The Keto diet is a popular choice for people wanting to lose large amounts of weight.

One woman lost over three stone and shrunk her belly fat following the diet plan.

Sharing her story to Reddit, poster ‘cfabriziostanton’ explained she lost 50lbs (three stone five pounds) in just four months.

The mum-of-three revealed she still has another “10-20lbs of fat loss” to go before she is finished.

Her images garnered lots of comments on the social media site, with most asking her how she did it.

Responding to one commenter, cfabriziostanton said: “I follow a ketogenic diet. I feel like it has a bad reputation but it doesn’t need to be super greasy and fat laden for most who are trying to lose weight.

“Once my body switched to using fat as fuel I had TON of excess fat already attached to my body to fuel it.

“I eat protein of all kinds (fish, meat, eggs) fat (avocados and cheese mainly) and low-carb veggies (broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, lettuce, spinach and zucchini) but my portion sizes are significantly smaller since being in ketosis- because my appetite is suppressed and my thinking of what “normal” is has been completely rewired.”

  • Two years after the breaking up of Hewlett-Packard Co, Hewlett Packard Enterprise is selling its headquarters in Palo Alto, California.
  • After years of layoffs and restructuring, the company will consolidate some of its Silicon Valley offices.
  • HPE will move its headquarters to the HPE Aruba office in Santa Clara. The office was recently built to house the team at Aruba, which was acquired by HPE in 2015.

After two years of massive restructuring and staff reductions, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is selling its headquarters on land it has owned in Palo Alto, California since 1957, the company announced on Thursday.

The headquarters will move to nearby Santa Clara, at a new 23,000 square-foot office complex originally built to house Aruba, a company acquired by HPE in 2015. Some of the staff will also move to existing offices in San Jose and Milpitas.

HPE wouldn’t disclose how many people work in Silicon Valley, but the company has around 45,000 employees globally.

“Over the past two years we’ve made tremendous progress towards becoming a simpler, nimbler and more focused company,” said Meg Whitman, CEO of HPE, said in a statement. “I’m excited to move our headquarters to an innovative new building that provides a next-generation digital experience for our employees, customers and partners. Our new building will better reflect who HPE is today and where we are heading in the future.”

A home of 60 years

The move follows the 2015 break-up of Hewlett-Packard Co into two separate companies: HPE, which focuses on selling technology to businesses, and HP Inc, which makes printers and desktop computers.

Both companies have remained at the Palo Alto property, which was originally acquired by HP Co sixty years ago, since the split. But HPE has worked out of separate offices that were built on a portion of the land in 1979. HPE will sell those buildings, while HP Inc will remain on its portion of the property.

Since becoming an independent organization, HPE has shrunk by divesting its technology services unit and signing a deal to sell its software division.

The reorganization has already involved several rounds of layoffs, including a major restructuring in June 2016, which saw the departure of numerous company veterans and the consolidation of its sales organization.

In September, Bloomberg reported that HPE would lay off around 5,000 people — 10% of its global workforce — before the end of the year.

EPA official says the agency has shrunk to Reagan-era levels https://briefnews.eu/epa-official-says-the-agency-has-shrunk-to-reagan-era-levels/ https://briefnews.eu/epa-official-says-the-agency-has-shrunk-to-reagan-era-levels/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 07:08:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/epa-official-says-the-agency-has-shrunk-to-reagan-era-levels/ FILE PHOTO: Scott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), speaks to employees of the agency in Washington, U.S., February 21, 2017. REUTERS/Joshua Roberts Thomson Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The workforce at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is on course to fall to its lowest level since Ronald Reagan was president, an agency official said on Tuesday.

In June, the EPA unveiled a buyout program that would contribute to the biggest cuts of any federal agency in President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget proposal. The EPA employs about 15,000 people.

After buyouts and retirements, that number could drop to 14,428 by October, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said in an email.

That would be below the fiscal 1988 level, when EPA staffing was 14,440, the official noted. A further 2,998 employees, or just over 20 percent of the total, are eligible to retire now, the official said.

In an April spending bill, the Republican-controlled Congress set a cap for EPA staffing at 15,000 employees for fiscal year 2017, rejecting proposed increases by the previous administration of Democratic President Barack Obama.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said the reductions were “giving long-serving, hard-working employees the opportunity to retire early.

“We’re proud to report that we’re reducing the size of government, protecting taxpayer dollars and staying true to our core mission of protecting the environment and American jobs,” he said in a separate statement.

Pruitt has rolled back a slew of Obama-era regulations limiting carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels.

He was also instrumental in convincing Trump to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord – a global pact to stem planetary warming through emissions cuts.

While acknowledging the planet is warming, Pruitt has questioned the gravity of the problem and the need for regulations that require companies to take costly measures to reduce their carbon footprint.

Before becoming head of the EPA, he was Oklahoma’s attorney general and repeatedly sued the agency he now runs to block federal environmental rules.

National monuments’ land to be shrunk, angering conservation groups https://briefnews.eu/national-monuments-land-to-be-shrunk-angering-conservation-groups/ https://briefnews.eu/national-monuments-land-to-be-shrunk-angering-conservation-groups/#respond Fri, 25 Aug 2017 04:36:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/national-monuments-land-to-be-shrunk-angering-conservation-groups/ The US Interior Department plans to scale back or eliminate national monuments, despite an outpouring of public condemnation for the policy set forth by an executive order by President Donald Trump.

US Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke delivered the recommendations to the president’s desk on Thursday, following a 120-day study of 27 national monuments.

Zinke released a statement saying that monuments will be scaled back, but did not mention which ones. He stated that no monuments will be eliminated in the recommendation.

However, the secretary did say that he recommended boundary changes for a “handful” of sites, the Associated Press reported.

Over the last two weeks, conservation groups have launched public campaigns to change Zinke’s mind about changing the designations of the monuments.

“Any recommendation from Secretary Zinke to shrink national monuments is hypocritical at best and ruinous at worst,” said Michael Brune, Director of the Sierra Club, Reuters reported.

Some were even angry that specific details have not emerged yet in the recommendations.

“Secretary Zinke needs to level with the American people. Which priceless national monuments does he recommend shrinking?” Drew Caputo, vice president of litigation for lands, oceans and wildlife at EarthJustice, said.

But the review has gained praise from energy, mining, ranching and timber advocates.

One right-leaning group already expressed support for Thursday’s recommendation. A statement released by Americans for Prosperity praised Zinke for giving the president a “series of recommendations designed to give additional flexibility to local communities impacted by overly broad management of federal lands under the Antiquities Act.”

“The government should adhere to the ‘smallest area compatible’ standard laid out in statute to ensure local communities, who know the area best, can enjoy or utilize the remaining land,” the statement read, according to CNN.

The Interior Department said that during the 120-day review it held over 60 meetings with “advocates and opponents of monument designations.”

Zinke stated the recommendations would “provide a much-needed change for the local communities who border and rely on these lands for hunting and fishing, economic development, traditional uses, and recreation.”

The review began in April when Trump ordered Zinke to review a slew of national monuments that the president claimed had been wrongly designated under the federal government’s control. Trump said past presidents employed a more than 100-year-old law called the Antiquities Act to preserve the monuments while overreaching their presidential powers.

Zinke already made a designation to shrink the size of Bears Ears National Monument, which stretches for 1.35 million acres and is located in Utah. It was designated a national monument last year by former President Barack Obama.

Poundland launch budget Toblerone – in size popular chocolate was BEFORE it shrunk https://briefnews.eu/poundland-launch-budget-toblerone-in-size-popular-chocolate-was-before-it-shrunk/ https://briefnews.eu/poundland-launch-budget-toblerone-in-size-popular-chocolate-was-before-it-shrunk/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 07:37:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/poundland-launch-budget-toblerone-in-size-popular-chocolate-was-before-it-shrunk/

The makers of Toblerone, Mondelez International, faced harsh criticism last year when they reduced the weight of the much-loved bar without reducing the price.

It was thought they did so after the Brexit announcement – a claim the company strongly denied.

But fans were left disappointed by the shrinking chocolate, and now Poundland have stepped in with their own weighty offering, named Twin Peaks.

The bar does have a different taste to its competitor, and Poundland explained: “The double mountain bar, created in the home of British chocolate by specialist Walkers Chocolates, has a distinctive British flavour compared to more traditional milk nougat bars from Switzerland.”

But blind tests have found the chocolate rated favourably, and Poundland revealed: “Twin Peaks has already received rave reviews in secret blind taste tests where two in three customers preferred it to the branded alternative.”

Explaining why they had decided to create Twin Peaks, Poundland said: “Development on Twin Peaks began earlier this year after the makers of Toblerone – Poundland’s top-selling item – created uproar by reducing the weight of the bar by 20g and changing the shape of its iconic brand.

“Twin Peaks – at 180g – is 20 per cent heavier than its branded equivalent, and offers a double mountain in every packet.”

Fans may also be pleased to hear Twin Peaks is created and manufactured in the UK, in a factory in the West Midlands.

Speaking about the launch, Poundland trading director Barry Williams said: “Poundland shoppers are savvy and the change in their favourite chocolate bar last Christmas didn’t go unnoticed.

“That’s why we’ve created a new £1 alternative for them – the size they wanted, with a British taste, and with all the spaces in the right places.”

Toblerone, meanwhile, shrunk their 400g bars to 360g while the 170g bars are now just 150g.

Sharing the new-look chocolate on its Facebook page last year, Toblerone wrote: “We chose to change the shape to keep the product affordable for our customers, and it enables us to keep offering a great value product.

“It had to make a decision between changing the look of the bars or raising their price.”

But Mondelez International suffered heavy criticism on social media

Toblerone lover Dan Rickwood wrote: “Hi Toblerone, I am one of your biggest fans and love your chocolate, but I bought a 150g Toblerone earlier only to be left upset disappointed and a little distressed!

“In fact I felt cheated on a tad in the way that they are now spaced out so much loosing out on Toblerone goodness, I’m upset Toblerone I’m sorry but I really am.”

‘Organs shrunk to half normal size’: Belgian parents convicted after baby starved to death https://briefnews.eu/organs-shrunk-to-half-normal-size-belgian-parents-convicted-after-baby-starved-to-death/ https://briefnews.eu/organs-shrunk-to-half-normal-size-belgian-parents-convicted-after-baby-starved-to-death/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2017 15:43:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/organs-shrunk-to-half-normal-size-belgian-parents-convicted-after-baby-starved-to-death/ A Belgian court has convicted parents whose baby died of malnutrition and dehydration after being given an alternative lactose- and gluten-free diet. The seven-month-old boy’s organs shrank to half their size, and his stomach was empty.

The death of the baby boy, Lucas, was “the result of the systematic offer of food which was not suitable,” Judge Mieke Butstraen said on Wednesday, as cited by AP.

“His health was seriously impeded and he eventually died,” Butstraen said, adding that the parents received six-month suspended sentences, which they can appeal.

“It appears from the file that they treat their children with the best intentions, but their convictions still endangered the health of their son Lucas, leading to his death.

“It’s clear that the defendants have already been severely punished because they need to proceed with life in the knowledge that they are responsible for the death of their son, who they truly loved,” Butstraen said.

Prosecutors initially demanded 18 months’ imprisonment for the boy’s parents, but lawyers asked for an acquittal, saying that the pair never intended for the child to die.

“The defendants knew the precarious health situation of their child, yet refused to call in medical help in time,” the judge said.

Lucas was brought to the emergency department in the town of Hasselt in June 2014 and eventually died, reports in Belgian media from May this year said.

The seven-month-old was dehydrated and weighed 4.3kg (9.4lbs)– barely 1kg more than his birth weight. The investigation then determined that the boy was chronically malnourished.

The child’s parents, identified by Belgian media as Peter, 34 and Sandrina, 30, own a health foods shop. They kept the boy, reportedly their third child, on a milk diet but then concluded that he was gluten-intolerant and allergic to lactose, prosecutor Pascal Persoons said back in May.

The boy’s mother said that her son’s weight had fluctuated.

“When he was six months old, he still weighed 6kg,” she said, as cited by Het Nieuwsblad newspaper. “He did not have diarrhea, but he lost weight since then,” she added, saying that the shop’s customers could see the baby in the shop when he was playing.

However, the parents did not consult a doctor, court papers show, according to AP, and stopped going to social care. They reportedly searched the internet for his possible condition and took advice from shop clients.

Lucas’s parents tried various alternatives, including oat milk, rice milk, buckwheat milk and quinoa milk, defense lawyer Karine Van Meirvenne said.

“In the law, it (the judgment) says (that they are guilty of) ‘not giving any support or food to your child.’ But they gave support and food but in an alternative way so there were alternative foods they gave, it is not ‘not giving any food,’ it is completely different,” she said, as cited by AP.

“We never wanted the death of our son,” the baby’s mother said.

The prosecutor said that doctors later examined the boy and concluded that he was not lactose- or gluten-intolerant. The case has sparked uproar in Belgium over the use of alternative medicine.
