Kiev lost $ 15 billion after Russia closed its borders to consumer goods from Ukraine. It is almost a fifth of the country’s GDP.
“The sum [lost] is about $ 15 billion,” said Ukraine’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade Stepan Kubiv on Thursday.
“In 2014, the annexation of the Crimea and the conflict in the east resulted in a 20 percent loss for the economy, seven percent of the territory,” Kubiv added. Moscow’s position is that an absolute majority of Crimean people voted for secession from Ukraine and re-joining Russia in a democratic referendum in 2014.
The current gross domestic product of Ukraine is $ 93 billion. Before the Maidan revolution at the end of 2013, the Ukrainian economy produced $ 183 billion.
According to Kubiv, in the last 27 years Ukraine has lost its industrial and scientific potential and now has outdated production equipment.
In 2016, the free trade zone between Ukraine and Russia ceased to operate within the CIS trade block. In addition, both countries imposed embargos on the import of some consumer goods. At the moment, Kiev has a free trade zone with the European Union.
Ukrainian exports to the EU grew by only three percent last year, and mutual trade increased by six percent. However, during the same period, according to Ukrainian statistics, exports to Russia plummeted by 25.6 percent, compared to the previous year.

Alexander Payne built a reputation as one of the sharpest wits and most brutal ironists in independent cinema, even to the point where the internet conversation around his last film even encompassed the question of whether he was mean to his characters – as if they were people. For his biggest, most expensive undertaking, he tries on something a little different: sincerity. That sensibility reared its head periodically in The Descendants and Nebraska, but it never reaches the default level the way it does in Downsizing.
His latest script with frequent writing partner Jim Taylor uses the instrument of satire to probe a lingering disaster first identified by 18th century British economist Thomas Malthus: overpopulation. Malthus predicted an increasing decline in society’s standard of living due to the scarcity of resources available on earth. Downsizing begins with two scientists announcing a remedy they believe can cure the problem in a presentation called “Human Scale and Sustainability.” Over the course of 200-300 years, they will transition humans to a vastly shrunken size, reducing their waste by decreasing their size thousands fold.
From there, the film fast forwards to a decade down the line when their radical idea catches the tiniest of footholds. Downsizing sounds appealing to Paul Safranek, a protagonist cut in the mold of a Frank Capra hero. It helps that he’s played by Matt Damon, who brings a dignity to the character recalling Jimmy Stewart. Paul is a classic Middle American paradigm of basic decency: an occupational therapist committed to helping relieve the aches of Omaha Steaks’ workers, he’s the kind of guy who considers caring for his ailing mother and pleasing his listless wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) the highest honor.
After conversations with two shrunken high school classmates at their reunion, Paul and Audrey decide to make the big leap to downsize. They attend a sales pitch at Leisureland, a model community promoting itself as a middle-class utopia. Since dollars go further on a smaller scale, the average American worker can translate a modest savings account into enough money for a McMansion and nonstop leisure time. While downsizing came about as a solution to global and environmental issues, the decision quickly shifts to one existing at an odd nexus of selfishness and selflessness.
Payne and Taylor explore their high concept fully, from the practical concerns (how teeth work) to the political considerations (who will provide service work) even down to the way “short” becomes a microaggression. What they never quite figure out, however, is where to take the big idea. The duo has no clue what kind of drama to stage in the world they envision, although they have mercy on audiences by sparing them another dissolution into dystopia. Exploring the nuances of their creation makes for an hour of good cinema, particularly when probing the way Leisureland functions as an anesthetized consumerist paradise without going full Stepford Wives.
The film expands its frame with the introduction of Hong Chau’s Vietnamese dissident Ngoc Lan, an activist who gets shrunk not as liberation but rather as a form of government oppression. She works as a cleaner in Paul’s building and eventually introduces him to a world beyond the Leisureland walls, one where a group of working-class downsized individuals still live in relative squalor. Ngoc forces Paul to confront his notions about where his efforts to help humanity are best suited, a worthy question to consider – but one that also feels better suited for a different film.
No matter the narrative hiccups, the issues raised are fascinating to ponder because Payne and Taylor take the time to consider them fully. The capacity to shrink humans for population control is a far-fetched sci-fi concept, but the stretching of our planet beyond its capabilities has already begun. Downsizing dares to ask if humans will be ready to make the sacrifices necessary for the survival and preservation of the species is on the line. Payne and Taylor can pose the question without inducing complete debilitation because it’s one they ask with genuine concern and empathy for their fellow earthlings.

In the future, Matt Damon can become five-inches tall thanks to Norwegian scientists. That’s the premise of Alexander Payne‘s (Nebraska) next film, Downsizing, in which overpopulation has led to people shrinking themselves to live a “bigger” life in a “bigger” home and help the environment while they’re at it. After Sideways, Payne wrote the script with Jim Taylor, but due to its ambition and required visual effects shots, it took a long time to get made. According to Payne, though, it got made at the right time.
Below, check out the Downsizing first look.
Entertainment Weekly has the first official photo from Payne’s next movie, featuring Damon and Kristen Wiig as Mr. and Mrs. Safranek, saying hello to a downsized couple:
Damon and Wiig play a married couple who decide to get downsized. Only one of them goes through with it, though. At five inches tall, people can experience some of their dreams, like living in a huge mansion and consuming as much as they want. Our editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta saw 10 minutes of the movie at CinemaCon and was left very impressed.
While speaking with EW, Payne says he takes the premise and runs with it like an episode of Black Mirror without the “science-fiction” feeling:
The basic premise is a very delicious one, and it’s the premise that saw Jim and me through the many years to get this made… it’s very much like the previous movie Jim and I did, in that it takes something inherently absurd and ridiculous, but tells it with utter earnestness… kind of like what you see in Black Mirror. Some episodes of Black Mirror take a premise and run with it, but I’m not interested in the science fiction feeling; I always aspire to make a Hal Ashby or a Robert Altman movie, and the plot has a certain episodic structure.
Payne’s next movie is actually why there was such a long wait between Sideways and The Descendants. The director and his co-writer couldn’t quite crack the script or get financing:
This film was very difficult for us, and it was the reason why there was a long gap for me between Sideways and The Descendants. We spent a lot of time trying to perfect this screenplay. We don’t choose [when to make a film], it’s when we get financing [and] we couldn’t get financing for it. We also hadn’t quite cracked the screenplay yet; so as painful as that was in hindsight, I’m glad the film was made when it was made. The same thing happened to me years before on About Schmidt. About Schmidt was going to be my first feature in 1991, but I couldn’t get financing and maybe hadn’t quite cracked the screenplay, so it wasn’t made for 11 more years. It happens sometimes.
Downsizing is easily the biggest production Payne has directed to date. He’s never made a movie of this scope. B a larger scope or not, it’s still an Alexander Payne film. The story “requires a bigger budget,” but “it’s exactly our same sense of humor” the director told EW. A little bit of Black Mirror mixed in with that sense of humor and some Altman and Ashby sounds like a powerful recipe a director like Payne could pull off. His next movie co-stars Christoph Waltz, Laura Dern, Alec Baldwin, Jason Sudeikis, Neil Patrick Harris, and Udo Kier.
Downsizing opens in theaters on December 22.

With the help of famed mental skills coach Harvey Dorfman, Pappas cured his glitch and played two more seasons in the minors. He doesn’t know why the yips — common lexicon for an athlete’s loss of fine motor skills — took hold, but lessons in mental preparation and enhancement cured the ailment. Baseball, perhaps more than any other sport, is a trial of mental fortitude. Modern baseball players are bigger, faster and stronger than in any era past. Still, one thing remains the same: constant failure. Slumps and mental implosions never cease to hijack seasons. For that reason, individuals like Dorfman are becoming the norm. Today, at least half of the major league teams have a full-time mental skills coach on staff, and some, like the Cubs, have implemented comprehensive mental programs at every level of the organization. Baseball is changing — and the new path to success is the six inches between the ears.
It’s a much more hands-on approach today. Now, mental performance [in baseball] doesn’t mean ‘You’re nuts.’
Erik Pappas, former MLB catcher
It’s said that hitting a baseball is the hardest task in sports; even the best batters suffer a 70 percent failure rate. Pitching and fielding are equally nerve-racking, given that the weight of the entire game rests on every throw. For this reason, players are constantly searching for ways to clear their mind. Josh Bell, the Pirates’ young rising star, practices yoga and works with Pittsburgh’s director of mental conditioning, Bernie Holliday, to “quiet all of the negative energy and noise” that accumulates during a season. “Your brain can get pretty cluttered over the course of a season,” Bell tells OZY. “I try to free up my mind and not let fear and doubt set in.”
For Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz, calm hitters were always the toughest outs. “The guys who can slow the game down are the toughest to deal with,” Smoltz tells OZY. Smoltz’s colleague on Fox Sports, Yankee legend Alex Rodriguez, sees the other side of baseball’s 60-foot, 6-inch dual. “Great pitchers can feast on players who are anxious and don’t feel comfortable at the plate.”
Widely considered the leader in baseball mental performance consulting, the late Dorfman was hired as the Oakland A’s mental skills coach in the mid-1980s. He earned a World Series ring with Oakland in 1989 and another with Florida in 1997. Author of The Mental ABCs of Baseball, Dorfman had no degrees of higher learning. Instead, he combined common sense with tough love and empathy. His success with players like Barry Zito, Jamie Moyer and Roy Halladay, who credits Dorfman with saving his career, led other teams to seek their own gurus. By the turn of the century, mental skills coaches were popping up here and there on payrolls.

Still, sports psychology and the idea of “shrinks” in baseball remained taboo in the locker room. In the ’80s and ’90s, says Pappas, players largely coached themselves. The suggestion that a player might benefit from a mental coach meant something was horribly wrong. “It’s a much more hands-on approach today,” he tells OZY. “Now, mental performance doesn’t mean ‘You’re nuts.’”
These days, lodged between morning batting practice and fielding drills, weight training and cryogenic chamber recovery therapy, several meals and, of course, the actual games, players across baseball pencil in time to mentally reset. Just as the Phillies’ strength and conditioning coach is essential to star third baseman Maikel Franco’s bat speed, mental skills coach Geoff Miller has become paramount to Franco’s approach at the plate. Miller is the Phillies’ first-ever mental skills coach and, like Dorfman, is not a licensed psychologist. More executive consultant than therapist, Miller uses locker room language and common interests — music, movies, poker — to coach his pupils. After breaking into baseball in 2005 as a minor league consultant with Pittsburgh, Miller has climbed the professional ladder and finally has the opportunity to implement a complete program at the major league level. His focus? Simple. “My job is to help each of our players maximize their full potential,” Miller told Philly.com.
Today, teams are constantly searching for an edge on the competition. As OZY has noted elsewhere, the edge gained by analytics departments in the Moneyball era has largely been nullified. Fielding a roster full of players who master their own domain could be the newest, fastest route to championship success. In his book, Crunch Time: How to Be Your Best When It MattersMost, longtime pitching coach and performance guru Rick Peterson outlines a strategy that has helped so many of his players triumph. “Reframing” is one’s ability to view a difficult situation in a different light. Peterson contends that via evolution, humans become naturally defensive under pressure. Defensive mechanisms are essential for survival but are often detrimental in sports or business. To combat this, Peterson has spent his career teaching players how to calm their nerves and reframe tense situations into scenarios ripe for crunch-time excellence.
The concept of guiding a player on the road to mindfulness and emotional control is the essence of every mental skills program popping up in clubhouses today. Baseball is a simple game with thousands of pressure-packed situations that form a complex matrix. Players who are relaxed and able to relish their own self-confidence are often the game’s best. They’re also usually the most adverse to change. “If you’re playing well,” Pappas tells OZY, “you don’t want to talk to anyone or open any new horizons.”
But unnecessary change should not be the goal of any mental skills coach, Miller writes in his book, Intangibles. The goal is much less complicated. “I’ve never found a better way to get through to a player than to simply make it clear to him that I believe in him.”

(Reuters) – Canada’s BlackBerry Ltd, reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings on Friday, as operating costs nearly halved, and said it expects to be profitable on an adjusted basis in 2018.
The company’s U.S.-listed shares were up nearly 5 percent at $ 7.29 before the bell.
BlackBerry has shifted away from making its once-iconic smartphones to building a software business, which includes mobile device management products and the QNX industrial operating system.
The company’s adjusted revenue from software and services rose 12.2 percent to $ 193 million in the fourth quarter ended Feb. 28, from the preceding quarter.
BlackBerry said it received more than 3,500 enterprise customer orders in the quarter.
“Looking ahead to fiscal 2018, we expect to grow at or above the overall market in our software business,” Blackberry Chief Executive John Chen said in a statement.
Chen said BlackBerry expected to be profitable on an adjusted basis and generate positive free cash flow for the year ending February 2018.
The Waterloo, Ontario-based company’s net loss narrowed to $ 47 million or 10 cents per share in the fourth quarter, from $ 238 million or 45 cents per share, a year earlier.
The prior-year quarter included a loss of $ 127 million related to the sale of certain assets.
Excluding one-time items, the company earned 4 cents per share. Analysts on average had expected the company to break even, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Operating expenses fell about 49 percent to $ 229 million.
Revenue fell about 38 percent to $ 286 million. On an adjusted basis, revenue was $ 297 million, beating analysts’ average expectation of $ 289.3 million. (Reporting by Vishaka George and Narottam Medhora in Bengaluru; Editing by Sai Sachin Ravikumar)

Enlarge / The announcement of the Creators Update in October 2016.
The Windows 10 Creators Update, due some time in the next couple of months, enables differential updates as part of what Microsoft calls the Unified Update Platform. These updates only contain the changes between one major Windows update and the next, which should make for smaller, faster downloads.
Windows Insiders have been receiving these new differential updates since early December, and Microsoft has reported on the effectiveness of the new scheme. Compared to a “canonical” update (which includes full files rather than just the changed portions), the savings are substantial: the median differential download size of build 15025 was 910MB. The media canonical size of build 15031 was 2.56GB.
This is particularly attractive to members of the Insider program because each new build is delivered as a major update that performs a full in-place Windows 10 install. To take advantage of the differential updates, you’ll have to make sure to never skip any releases; if you’re updating an older build to the very latest, a full download is required. This represents a trade-off on Microsoft’s part: The company doesn’t want to have to maintain a differential update between any and every pair of builds.

Faraday Future had initially planned for the factory to be about three million square feet, though financial concerns have put those grand plans in question. Specifically, Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting said late last year that his LeEco technology company is running low on cash, implying that any capital dedicated towards Faraday Future may be in jeopardy.
Regardless, the company is hoping for its first vehicle, the FF91, to roll off that North Las Vegas assembly line by the end of next year, and the city is going through with its plans to run infrastructure such as water lines, sewers, and roads out to Apex Industrial Park, where the car factory is being constructed.
Last month, Faraday Future showed off the FF91 at CES in Las Vegas. The company says the car will have 1,050 horsepower as well as fast-charging capability, and will be able to go as far as 378 miles on a full charge. Faraday Future is taking “priority” reservations for the car at $ 5,000 each. There’s been no word on how much the FF91 will cost, though it’s likely to be well into the six-figure range.
