Not too long ago, we learned that the DreamWorks Animation hit Shrek would be getting some kind of reboot from Illumination Entertainment. But before that happens, a huge group of filmmakers and animators have collaborated to remake the entire original movie from scratch.

Shrek Retold is a reimagining of the original Shrek with over 200 storytellers tackling a small segment of the movie in their own unique style. As you can see, it plays out like some kind of acid-fueled trip through the satirical fairytale with a mix of charming homemade live-action footage and animation. Shrek Retold Trailer

This feels like something you’d see on Adult Swim late at night, or maybe in an episode of Ren and Stimpy or something like that. The trailer feels like a stream of consciousness version of Shrek that you’d see in your own head if you were totally blitzed at a rave. Shrek Retold weaves in and out of a wide variety of animation styles, ranging from totally amateur to semi-professional, and then there are live-action scenes with actors wearing makeshift costumes, or sometimes no costumes at all. It’s quite the eclectic affair.

If this kind of project sounds familiar, that’s because there was a project called Star Wars Uncut that previously did the same kind of thing. However, Star Wars Uncut, as well as The Empire Strikes Back Uncut that followed, weren’t quite as surreal and weird with the styles used to retell those episodes of the sci-fi saga. Meanwhile, Shrek Retold feels like it had a mandate to make Shrek as weird as possible, and it certainly looks like they succeeded.

Honestly, as cool as this project sounds, I’m not sure I can handle something this disjointed and wild for the feature length runtime of Shrek, which clocked in at exactly 90 minutes when it hit theaters back in 2001. Furthermore, I’m not sure who all these names are that the Shrek Retold trailer is throwing at me, but they’re likely popular on the YouTube circuit and all the teens and twentysomethings who grew up watching Shrek will likely be stoked to see them tackling one of their favorite childhood movies.

As of now, there’s no indication as to when or how Shrek Retold will be released, but as soon as we hear something on that front, we’ll be sure to let you know so you can prepare your mind for the madness.

There couldn’t be a better time for Sterling K. Brown to host Saturday Night Live. Aside from the fact that this NBC series This Is Us is at the height of its popularity, he also has a small role in the blockbuster giant Black Panther. Both were ripe for lampooning in the latest episode of Saturday Night Live where the award-winning actor made his hosting debut. So how did Brown fare for this first time on the live sketch comedy scene?

Let’s run through the best and worst sketches from the Sterling K. Brown hosted Saturday Night Live.

The Best

Family Feud Oscars Edition – These celebrity editions of Family Feud have been hit or miss lately, but this special Oscars edition worked extremely well. Nearly all of the impressions were top notch. The only ones that didn’t work all that well were Pete Davidson as Timothee Chalamet and Chris Redd as Jordan Peele. But what saved the latter was that it turned into a great meta joke about Kenan Thompson sticking around Saturday Night Live for 15 years now.

Bachelor Finale – I’ve never seen a single episode of The Bachelor, but the finale of the most recent episode had so many people talking that even people who stay far away from shows like this couldn’t help but overhear details about what happened at the end of this season. And SNL perfectly parodies the events of that episode but cleverly (and depressingly) ties them into the ongoing events of our circus of a government. As funny as it was, it was also equally

Family Dinner – Shrek – There were a ton of movie-themed sketches from this episode, and this probably wasn’t one that anyone was expecting. Sterling K. Brown gives a passionate defense of Shrek at a family dinner that takes a turn for the awkwardly worse. He does have a point though. Shrek is pretty great.

Movie Coverage – Cecily Strong continues to be the cast member who doesn’t get nearly as much play as she should. This script supervisor character with a bubbly Southern drawl, abbreviating curse words and reading lines without any passion is made hilarious by Strong. But even more funny is how ludicrously profane the script for this fake movie is. It’s even more extreme than a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Firefly Games is unveiling DreamWorks Universe of Legends, which brings a number of entertainment franchises into a single mobile game. Now you can play with DreamWorks characters from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, and more.

Los Angeles-based Firefly Games and entertainment company Riva Group have created an action role-playing game with more than 40 heroes and villains from DreamWorks animated films. It is available on iOS and Android.

“DreamWorks properties have touched the hearts and minds of millions of fans around the world,” said Paul Riva, the chairman of the Riva Group, in a statement. “Firefly Games – with their ability to reach a truly global audience with their presence in the U.S. and China makes for the perfect partner to create and share this unified DreamWorks gaming experience.”

The development studio designed DreamWorks Universe of Legends with Western and Eastern markets in mind. The combination of iconic DreamWorks characters could be appealing on a global basis, the companies believe.

“We are truly honored to have the opportunity to bring multiple worlds of DreamWorks into one grand and unique adventure,” said Michael Zhang, CEO of Firefly Games, in a statement. “We’re eager to bring exciting new content to DreamWorks fans and gamers alike.”

The game has familiar DreamWorks worlds, such as the Valley of Peace from Kung Fu Panda, the Isle of Berk from How to Train Your Dragon, the Swamp from Shrek. The movies represented in the game include Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, Madagascar, The Croods, Penguins of Madagascar, Megamind,
Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Rise of the Guardians, Turbo, Monsters vs Aliens, Bee Movie, and Shark Tale.

It has a real-time tactical party-based combat, upgradable gear, and dynamic skills. It has both single-player and player-versus-player modes.

And it features DreamWorks Hideaway, a hub with a customizable base where players can find new quests, level-up their legends, manage resources, and chat with other players.

Firefly Games was founded in January 2015 by Zhang and KJ Lin. Its previous games included Rush of Heroes and Dungeon Crash. The Riva Group is a design and development studio with offices around the world.

Firefly has 35 employees, including 20 in Los Angeles. It has raised $ 18 million in two rounds, it was valued at more than $ 100 million in its most recent round. Its focus is on creating mid-core games, or those that are hardcore in nature with short play sessions for mobile devices.

The Riva Group is an entertainment company that has worked with a variety of studios on location-based entertainment parks, game licensing, VR, and other media.

Following the success of the 2001 original, Shrek spawned three sequels, with Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter being released in 2010.

Despite the forth film’s conclusive subtitle, the announcement of Shrek 5 hit headlines last summer with plans for a 2019 release.

Now Austin Powers screenwriter Michael McCullers has completed the Shrek 5 script.

Speaking with CinemaBlend about his new film, The Boss Baby, the writer gave a big update on the Dreamworks sequel.

He said: “I finished that script which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me.

“It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $ 3 billion (£2.3 billion), I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level. 

“Reinvention was sort of called for. There [have] been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.”

Last year

Whether the original cast will return for Shrek 5 is currently unknown, but perhaps there won’t be room for them if it’s such a huge change.

But with the raunchy humour of Austin Powers behind the comedy, will Shrek fans see a more adult take on the series? Fans will have to wait and see.
