Step aside for a second, Archie: It’s time for Kevin Keller to get the spotlight. Riverdale returns this Wednesday (The CW, 8/7c) with an all-new musical episode, and Kevin takes center stage in it, planning a school variety show in which he’ll do a number from the cult favorite Hedwig and the Angry Inch. But when Principal Honey objects to his song selection, it sets off a student rebellion that takes over the whole school — and brings out a newly defiant side in Kevin. “There’s been a lot brewing with Kevin this season, and I think it’s kind of bubbled to a brim where we can’t help but have him explode,” Casey Cott, who plays Kevin, tells TVLine. “It was really fun in this episode watching Kevin own it and go for it and stop apologizing and just really show up. I think it’s going to be a great launch pad for Kevin in the future.” Watch a sneak peek of this week’s Riverdale right here:
Kevin ends up performing as Hedwig anyway… but getting into the full costume wasn’t easy. “The hair and makeup was two and a half hours, usually starting with the makeup, which was crazy,” Cott reveals. “I learned how to sit still for the first time. And then the wig, we’d chuck on, which took a bit, too.” But he did get a spiritual boost from the wig he wore, which had some powerful Hedwig energy: “The wig is actually the wig from the Hedwig movie that John Cameron Mitchell wore, so that’s pretty cool.” But where does Cott fall on Season 4’s biggest controversy: the emerging love triangle between Archie, Betty and Jughead? (After all, Kevin famously declared Archie and Betty “endgame” back in Season 1.) “I feel like however I answer this question, there are going to be hundreds of people outside my home egging it,” he jokes, before adding: “I kind of like the idea of Archie and Betty getting together. They haven’t been able to explore that. I think it’d probably be more of an Archie characteristic, to be in love with Betty for his whole life and then they end up being together, than a Betty characteristic. It seems like there’s a lot more darkness, a lot more curiosity [to her]. So it’ll be interesting to see what happens there.” Riverdale fans, drop your predictions for the rest of Season 4 in the comments.

Educational history projects #Romanovs100 & #1917LIVE panel at America’s major education fair SXSW EDU will take place in March 2019.
SXSW EDU will run for the 9th time since 2011 when South by Southwest branched out into a separate education festival. A prestigious international platform, SXSW EDU supports the community’s desire to connect, collaborate and impact the future of education.
Thanks to a three-stage vote including an open vote, the team behind #Romanovs100 and #1917LIVE will host a panel at the festival in Texas in 2019. While historian Helen Rappaport will travel all the way from England, the project’s other contributor, Artist Marina Amaral will fly over from Brazil.
Both projects are dedicated to Russian history, but work on reviving the events of early 20th century has become truly international with the Moscow-based team reaching out to professionals and history enthusiasts from all over the world. Award-winning #1917LIVE ran for a year in 2017 on Twitter, allowing any user to join as a historical character who lived through the Russian Revolution of 1917 and tweet on their behalf, as if social media existed 100 years ago.
It was followed by #Romanovs100 with accounts on 4 social networks reviewing the last decades of the Empire as seen through the lenses of the Romanov family’s cameras, each platform showcasing its own narrative, format and content. #Romanovs100 features short documentary videos, original music, 100-year-old photos in spherical mobile view, digital colorization, an artwork contest, real-time blogs by historical characters, VR animation and more.
The team would like to thank everyone who cast their vote for the projects making this panel possible. #Romanovs100 shortly plan to release an original soundtrack with music written by prominent Russian musician, Peter Nalich. It will be available for download for free.

Dan Tucker is apologizing again. We’re stepping over cables, ducking under scaffolding and trying to hear each other over the drone of drilling on the first day of Sheffield Doc/Fest. The Japanese games giant has gotten into the habit of scheduling their latest announcement altogether.
Following on from the Nintendo Direct that confirmed the release of a new Super Smash Bros game in 2018, a new event is set arrive today.
March 20 will see a new Nindie Direct broadcast, which will focus on a lot of new third-party content coming to the Nintendo Switch games list.
And unlike with many Nintendo Switch Directs, there haven’t been a ton of leaks beforehand.
It means we don’t know exactly what’s going to be revealed later today.
The new Nintendo Direct event kicks off between 4-5pm GMT, or 9am PDT, 12pm EST.
The last Nindie event held last year was hailed as a success by fans, who are hoping some release date will be confirmed today.
As the label suggests, it will focus on titles coming from smaller developers, although that doesn’t mean there won’t be any exciting reveals.
The last Nindie stream included popular projects like Travis Strikes Again, Shovel Knight: King of Cards and Super Meat Boy Forever.
There’s been a lot of talk of some of these finally getting a launch window announced, with a lot of fingers crossed on Hollow Knight getting new details announced for 2018.
It should also be noted that this latest Nindie Direct is being held the same week as GDC.
This could mean that some of the titles announced or revisited during this event could follow up more news during the conference.
Last August saw around 20 new Nintendo Switch games announced, meaning hopes are high for something similar in 2018.
The Nindies Spring Showcase can be watched via the YouTube embed found in this article.
Unlike with the larger Nintendo Direct event held earlier this month, there’s been no stipulation on whether all of these game will be launching in 2018.
That opens the door to some projects that won’t be arriving until 2019, so plenty of scope for some top projects to be announced.
Indie games are know to sell very well on the Nintendo Switch and is one of the main reasons why there are so many available on it.
Some titles have even confirmed that they’ve sold more copies on the hybrid device, than on all other platforms combined.
Brjann Sigurgeirsson of Steamworld developer Image & Form revealed something like that to PC Gamer a while ago, confirming that there title had done very well on Switch.
“On Switch we’ve sold many times what we’ve sold on Steam—somewhere between five and 10 times,” he explains.
Super Meat Boy also confirmed strong sales on the Nintendo Switch, with the game’s official revealing some surprising stats.
“Super Meat Boy on Switch first day sales came shockingly close to its debut on Xbox 360 back in 2010. That’s. Nuts,” they tweeted.
On Saturday Night Live, Bill Hader made his name as a ham. And a good one. As the show’s resident master of impressions (maybe the best the long-running series has ever seen), he was a key supporting player, the goofball who could conjure up an iconic figure with seemingly little effort, the wacky spice injected into any ordinary situation to get you giggling. Hader was always at his best when he was being silly.
So perhaps the most surprising thing about Hader’s new HBO series, Barry, is that he’s not silly at all. In fact, he’s downright withdrawn, playing a character so internalized, anxious and downbeat that the mere act of interacting with other human beings looks like a trial. The second most surprising thing about the show is that Hader’s Barry is an icy killer, a hitman who is ruthless and efficient and damn good at his job.
But what’s least surprising about all of of this is that Hader is terrific. He always is. We all knew he could be funny. What we didn’t know is that he could play the stone-faced straight man to a wacky universe of characters. It’s a thrilling, generous performance, one that lets the supporting cast shine at every opportunity.
Hader (who also directed the first two episodes) and co-creator Alec Berg (of Silicon Valley fame) ground the high concept premise of the show in grimly relatable subtext. At it’s core, Barry is the story of a downbeat Midwestern schlub making a living at a job he hates, albeit one that he’s very good at. However, a work trip to Los Angeles finds him bitten by the acting bug. Is he talented? Not really. But is he going to follow his dreams anyway? You bet your ass he will.
Of course, Barry is a professional hitman. So things get weird fast. And yeah, Barry’s baby steps into Hollywood, via an acting class filled with lovable and sometimes dim dreamers, come with a body count. Breaking into the industry is hard for ordinary folks, so that goes double for skilled killers who work in the shadows and have accidentally pissed off the local criminal underworld.
This set-up allows Barry to be lovable and even relatable, all while he’s shooting people in the face. You know this guy. Maybe you are this guy. He hates his job and wants more out of life. Fuches, his father figure and partner-in-crime (played by the always indispensable Stephen Root), loves him, but doesn’t believe he has a chance at this acting thing. He has a crush on a fellow acting student, Sally (an adorable and sweet Sarah Goldberg), but he’s not good at dancing, drinking, flirting, and closing the deal when he finds himself outside her apartment door. Barry is a war veteran, a damaged man who learned overseas that he was good at killing and brought his one true skill back home…but the emotions that circle that dark core make him human. There’s no snark to Barry. No smugness. When he kills, it’s never cool. We can sense and appreciate his desire for escape.

Hader and Berg wisely choose to never glamorize Barry’s work. Violence is fast and chaotic, reflecting Barry’s skills and the suddenness that accompanies a real gun battle. Hader is chilling with a weapon in his hand, a constant reminder that this is ugly work. Even when Barry gets silly, this dark underbelly gives it bite. Some of the comedic rhythms will remind you of Silicon Valley (Berg’s fingerprints are as present as Hader’s), but this is pitch black stuff. Comedy at its bleakest.
And that makes the show’s cheerful side all the more disarming and charming. When Barry isn’t murdering people, he’s learning how to act under Cousineau, a demanding acting coach whose students seemingly don’t realize that he’s a total crook. Henry Winkler is pitch-perfect casting – charismatic enough to sell us on his vision of show business, weathered enough to realize that he’s as desperate and pathetic as his hopeless charges. It’s a silly performance by an actor skilled at making the outrageous feel natural and his interactions with Hader are among the highlights of the first two episodes.
Just as effective are Glenn Fleshler and Anthony Carrigan as two eastern European criminals whose attempts to live ordinary domestic lives often clash with the fact that they torture people in their garages and hire marksmen to shoot innocent people in the head. Hader may play the title character, but he’s the straight face to all of this lunacy – watching these buffoons bounce off him is a joy.
There is a clear and obvious evolution across the two episodes of Barry that premiered at SXSW. The pilot is a solid half hour with a lot of heavy lifting – it gets the many high concept gears turning by the time the credits roll. Episode two sees the show finding its groove, transforming into something you can imagine watching every week instead of just a strong pitch. Episode 2 is funnier, darker, and wilder, doubling down on the pilot’s biting black comedy and unexpected sweetness while pushing the plot forward at a speed that reminds you just how slow too many shows move these days.
Barry is off to a strong start and if it maintains its momentum, HBO could have the next Veep or Silicon Valley on its hands. It’s fresh. It’s fun. It’s decisively R-rated and bleak in that trademark HBO house style. And Hader, a brilliant supporting player, steps into the center and proves that he’s the star we’ve always known him to be.
Barry premieres on HBO on March 25, 2018.

Fox’s The Resident made its regular time slot debut on Monday night with 4.7 million total viewers and a 1.0 rating — on par in the demo with predecessor The Gifted‘s freshman average (3.3 mil/1.0).
The Resident expectedly dropped — 46 and 62 percent — from Sunday night’s special post-NFC Championship showcase, which is akin to the slide CBS’ Hunted suffered last year in the same situation but marks a steeper decliner than Fox’s own The X-Files experienced two years ago (down 40 and 48 percent).

—GDC 2018 attendees who stop by the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibit will have the chance to play all of these inventive and innovative games using unique, one-of-a-kind controllers.
You could, for example, pilot a spaceship while shouting madly at a nearby friend/coworker/stranger to plug different-colored wires into your controller, or play games on a special sphere studded with LEDs.
You might also play virtual golf by blowing madly into a set of sensors, or help virtual disco-loving cops save their city from a zombie invasion by slapping fake zombie heads in time to the beat.
If you’re really feeling adventurous, you could climb inside a special unicorn controller and play a game with your horn and feet, or try your luck at a game of foosball played only using your voice!
As always, it promises to be a fantastic showcase. This year’s roster of alt.ctrl.GDC finalists is as follows:
Striker Air Hockey (Guerrilla Nouveau) – Guerrilla Nouveau has been hard at work on a new touchscreen technique. We made air hockey to demonstrate the possibilities of this low resolution touch screen technique, but couldn’t resist throwing in some extras.
Too Many Captains (And Not Enough Wire) (Avi Romanoff, Giada Sun) – A game where two or more players work together to pilot a spaceship through outer space. The engineer has the controller, and they plug colored wires into panels on the game’s controller. However, the engineer can’t see the screen — they need to rely on the other players, the captains — to guide them to victory.
Vaccination (Installation Required) – Two players must work together to keep the patient alive for as long as possible against the onslaught of bacteria racing towards the patient’s heart. One player is in charge of scanning the body, on the lookout for the bacteria and relaying what vaccine and where the other player, equipped with the injector, should administer.*
Clunker Junker (HNRY) – Clunker Junker is an experimental arcade game in which two players attempt to keep their space transport intact as they outrun space pirates through an asteroid field. As the ship takes damage in-game, physical panels will fall off of the ships 4 main modules, disabling them until they are repaired using the custom-made repair tool. The tool boasts two main components. First, the specially made tip which must be used to connect to the 4 ship modules. Second, the uniquely fabricated crank which provides actual power and rotates the tip, allowing players to perform actions such as steering, changing turret direction, supercharging their engine, or repairing their hull.
Grave Call (Totally Not a Game Studio) – Grave Call is a time-based, asymmetrical multiplayer game based on communication between two players, one is buried alive and one is a police dispatcher. A phone holds clues for the coffin’s location, which has to be identified before the phone battery runs out.
Living Orb (Jonathan Giroux) – Living Orb is a tangible game console, with which you can easily create your own enlightened games. The device is an sphere covered by LEDs. It’s like its surface is the screen! And you only control it by rotating it, that’s all. This allows for unique games!
Wind Golf (Pepijn Willekens) – A game where you play golf by blowing on physical sensors!
Puppet Pandemonium (Fluffy Games) – A puppet show video game that uses the puppets as the controllers, and has an element of audience participation.
Disco is Dead! (Third Floor Games) – Disco is Dead! is a 2-player buddy cop comedy horror arcade game that follows the story of Reggie and Kenny — two disco-loving cops who must save their city from a zombie outbreak with their ultimate handy dandy weapon… slapping! The game plays with slappable zombie heads and disco ball controllers for a more immersive experience!
Voiceball (Alex Turbyfield, Stephen Borden, Ilya Polyakov, Talal Alothman, Ali Yaldrim) – Voiceball is like foosball played with your voice. Using microphones, players hit the ball with a waveform representation of their voice. Make sounds to create waves to hit the ball into the other player’s goal in this party game pitting your vocal skills against your friends.
Wobble Garden (Robin Baumgarten) – Wobble Garden is a hand-crafted arrangement of sensing springs combined with reactive lighting. Players wobble springs to interact with the installation and play games. It creates a unique visual and tactile experience, and will be scaleable to a several meter large installation.
Unicornelia (The Sad Rainbows) – A game about the life of a young unicorn with an office job, played by mounting a horn on your head and inserting it into special motion-sensing compartments while also managing emotions via special pressure-sensitive pillows.
Mark Wars (Matthieu Alves, Louis Bernot, Alessandro Cheinisse, Gaëtan Cloarec, Florian Eschalier, Matthias Johan, Pierre Llanusa) – Our intention was to make a game accessible for a wide audience using no screen and one instinctive button. With Mark Wars, using a marker pen, the players will be able to trace their own unique path! This path will be followed by the player’s small model ship (either a TIE Fighter or X-Wing) and can be altered by the opponent.
Pump the Frog (7 Holy Frogges) – Pump the Frog is a 2d-puzzle-platformer where you control the Frog and your environment, roll, slip and squeeze around the levels, devouring any fly in your path!
Bot Party (Phoenix Perry and Frieda Abtan) – Bot Party in an interactive sound experience for humans. The bots have a problem. They have no way to communicate with their friends. Can you help? They need you to touch another human holding a bot. Through you the bots use the proprietary bot to skin to skin to bot communication protocol (BSSB) to send encoded secret messages to each other. Hold hands with other players to get the bot sound spectacular started!
Yo, Bartender! (Kraken) – Yo, Bartender! puts you in the shoes of a modern day bartender mixing cocktails in a bustling city. Survive the night rush by mixing and serving as fast as you can while making sure you always have the orders right. Do you have what it takes to be a bartender?
Doors to the City (Looking Glass) – An artist is lost in the divisions of his mind as he attempts to organize the vast arrays of his own creative process. The planets of his mind, NYC-LA-Newark-Oakland, take shape as he comes to battle them in their own respective ways.
Lemonade (Jing Sun, Yaying Zeng, Yuchen Huang, Ziqiang He) – A two-player game in which each player controls one (real) water pipe they can use to control the angle and flow of virtual on-screen water pipes. Shoot lemons, avoid cupcakes, make lemonade!
Hi-5 Heroes (Bobby Lockhart and Marty Meinerz) – Hi-5 Heroes is a 2-player cooperative rhythm game where two people high-five, low-five, and fist-bump to the beat.
Scissors The That Than and Shcocoococo VS (Miyazaworks) – One is a a game played with huge scissors controller. Use the joystick on the left to move, press the button on the right to search nearest enemies, cut the enemies in order to survive. The other is a multiplayer game in which you use special soap bottle controllers (modified with a Raspberry Pi) to control an on-screen soap bottle bird. Depress the soap bottle nozzle, and the bird will shoot liquid at germs!
As always, the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibit is open to all GDC attendees and will make its fifth appearance at the conference from Wed-Fri, March 21-23 in the Moscone Convention Center, near the Independent Games Festival pavilion. Any questions about the showcase should be directed to alt.ctrl.GDC co-creator and organizer John Polson.
So don’t miss your chance to play these unique, one-of-a-kind games — GDC 2018 may be your only chance to do so! For more information on GDC 2018, visit the show’s official website, or subscribe to regular updates via Facebook, Twitter, or RSS.

]]>The care and precision Wright exhibits there – and that star Gary Oldman, barely recognizable as Churchill, leans into – gives you a good idea of what you’re in for with Darkest Hour, which is a cleanly executed and exuberantly played picture about which, five days hence, I can barely recall more than Oldman’s performance. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a bad movie, or even a mediocre one. And yet it’s an impossible film to get all that worked up about, because it seems to exist solely so we can all weightily exhale over how much Gary Oldman has Disappeared Into His Role.

To be fair, Anthony McCarten’s script has a bit more going on than that. At its core, it’s a backstage drama – no sooner has Churchill arrived than enemies are attempting to oust him, a fact he is not only aware of, but verbalizes (“I took great pains to surround myself with old rivals; I may have overdone it”). There’s a fair amount of witty dialogue and amusing true (or true enough) storytelling, and the film pays admirable attention to the hard work of crafting his oratory, intercutting the presentation of his big speeches with the dictating, writing, and rewriting of them (in this way, it is unquestionably a writer’s movie). And Oldman delivers them masterfully, backed by Dario Marianelli’s bravura score, which builds in concert with his performance. His “We shall fight” speech still works, even after hearing and reading it so many times – because it is rousing, and it’s beautifully delivered.
As is his style, for better (usually) and for worse, director Wright is light on his feet; Darkest Hour moves, tearing from one scene to the next, dialogue batted around like so many tennis balls, digging in for a couple of genuinely solid set pieces. (One includes the delicious line, “We’ve lost the prime minister.”) Thanks to the oddities of timing, it’s an accidental companion piece to both Dunkirk and Their Finest, exploring the strategic side of that story with gusto; most notably, McCarten and Wright don’t just present Chamberlain and Hallifax as sniveling appeasers, but as voices of understandable hesitation and fear, doing their best (in their own way) to puzzle out the right move.
And they’ve surrounded him with an enviable supporting cast. Kristen Scott Thomas finds the right note of exasperation as wife Clementine, chastising him when he scares off a new secretary with a pointed “You’ve become rough and sarcastic and overbearing and rude.” But her best moments are her quieter ones, particularly a wonderful little speech in the celebration of his ascension, which begins as a congratulation and becomes a pointed rumination of coming to terms with always being second priority. Lily James finds the right note of high-spirited pluckiness as said secretary; it’s becoming clearer, with each passing picture, that somebody needs to build a screwball comedy around her. And though Ben Mendelsohn’s turn as King George VI is brief, the way he intones “You have my support” is richer than anything in The King’s Speech.

But ultimately, this movie is about the gifts of Gary Oldman, and make no mistake, he is entertaining, theatrical, impressive. It’s also a capital-P Performance, and your response to it will vary based on what kind of actor flips your switches. I, for one, am more moved by a performance like Mendolsohn’s or Thomas’s, one that lets you discover it sitting in the corner, rather than assaulting you at the door with its spot-on mimicry and transformative qualities. But that’s just me. This is certainly the kind of actor Oldman has always been – there’s nothing subtle about his work in True Romance or Leon: The Professional, and indeed, the full-throated theatricality of those turns (“EEEEVVVVERRRRYYYYYOOOOOONNNNEEEEEE!”) is what gives them their considerable voltage.
But those are also supporting roles, and when an actor who’s all about craft is at the center of a film, he may have trouble filling it. And that, ultimately, is where Darkest Hour comes up short; this is a film in service of a performance, rather than the other way around. It’s a slab of delicious frosting that wants you to think it’s a slice of cake.
“Darkest Hour” is out Wednesday in limited release.
