Starlink’s median download speeds in the US dropped from 90.6Mbps to 62.5Mbps between the first and second quarters of 2022, according to Ookla speed tests. Starlink’s median upload speeds in the US dropped from 9.3Mbps to 7.2Mbps in the same timeframe.
Median latency also got a little worse for Starlink’s US customers, rising from 43 ms to 48 ms. The latest numbers are in Ooka’s Q2 2022 report on Starlink speeds around the world, released Tuesday. “Starlink speeds decreased in every country we surveyed over the past year as more users sign up for service,” this week’s report said. The Q1 report is available here.
The Q2 report notes significant year-over-year decreases in Starlink speeds in numerous countries, while pointing out that overall performance is still pretty good:

As the threat of climate change becomes more real every day, the US is increasingly moving to green energy. And a recent study shows that some parts of the country are already seeing a boom in wind and solar jobs based on job posting data.
That's according to an analysis using pre-pandemic job openings provided by Lightcast. The authors of the paper find, based on job posting data and what they considered a wind and solar job, that these jobs "are very unevenly distributed across the US territory."
The researchers found the share of 2019 job postings that are considered wind and solar in 741 commuting zones across the US. Lightcast, formerly Emsi Burning Glass, provided the data used in the working paper, but the published results come from the authors' interpretation for what counts as wind and solar jobs. Lightcast told Insider it has a wider definition of green jobs.
Insider mapped the results of the paper by commuting zone and matched it to the county or counties the communing zones map to. The following map shows the share of job postings that are wind in commuting zones across the US:
"Commuting zones with a high share of wind jobs are concentrated on a vertical stripe in the middle of the country from Texas to North Dakota," the authors wrote.
Outside of that "vertical stripe" though was the commuting zone with the highest share. Condon, Oregon had 9.66% of job openings being a wind job. Vernon, Texas had the second highest share per the paper at 4.76%.
The researchers of the paper note some limits to using job postings data. For instance, there's potential that these openings may not have been filled.
The authors of the paper, E. Mark Curtis of Wake Forest University and Ioana Marinescu of University of Pennsylvania, defined green jobs using three different elements of criteria for their analysis. Included jobs had to match at least one. For instance, if the position title and/or the occupation said "solar," "photovoltaic," or "wind," then it was considered falling into their definition. Another element is based on the skills noted; it must "explicitly" need "a skill that relates to wind or solar energy." Additionally, it falls under the definition"if it is posted by a firm that posts a relatively high share of jobs that require wind or solar skills."
While the map for wind shows shares tended to be higher in the middle of the county, the authors find the share of jobs that are solar in an area don't follow the same exact pattern as wind.
Childress, Texas had the highest share of solar job postings at 6.94%. Another place in Texas, Stephenville, followed behind this percentage. However, it was several percentage points behind, with a share of 2.35%.
Even though some of these percentages seen in the various commuting zones for both of these green jobs across the nation may seem low, Curtis told Insider they can still have a big impact.
"If you're talking about 1% of job postings being directly wind and solar, especially in some of these communities, that is a really big deal," Curtis said.
One state that stood out in the paper is Texas, as the paper notes it "has a high share of both wind and solar jobs."
"Thus, Texas is already an energy hub for both fossil fuel and renewable energy," the authors wrote.
The Inflation Reduction Act is expected to create new jobs in clean energy. Researchers of the Political Economy Research Institute find that it will create over 900,000 jobs a year on average over 10 years. A White House fact sheet also argues that it will create clean energy jobs. The Inflation Reduction Act is also supposed to help lower emissions and lower people's energy costs.
Curtis said based on his and his co-author's findings that the kinds of green energy jobs "likely to be created by the [Inflation Reduction Act] will be well-paying and located in areas whose economies are reliant on fossil fuel extraction." Research already suggests that there could be millions of jobs created over 10 years as a result of the Inflation Reduction Act.
Curtis told Insider one main result based on the job posting data he and his co-author used is "that the jobs that are being created are largely in areas that currently have high fossil fuel employment." He added that this suggests "that this is going to make the transition from a fossil fuel based energy economy to a renewables based economy smoother than it otherwise would've been." However, he added "we don't have direct evidence on this."
"Given the domestic production requirements that are part of the bill we should expect to see more solar and wind jobs show up in the manufacturing sector than were seen in the study," Curtis said. "A major reason why environmental legislation has been so difficult to pass is that it has lacked political support from rural and 'red' areas of the country."
Curtis pointed out that many of the green job postings fall in "red" areas of the US, such as in parts of Texas.
"The results of the paper suggest that jobs created in green energy will largely go to more conservative areas that have historically relied on fossil fuels," Curtis said. "Future environmental legislation is more likely to pass if the green energy transition is perceived as helping these regions."
The study not only looked at where wind and solar jobs are in the US but also includes the wind and solar jobs by occupation and industry, pay premiums, necessary education, and job vacancy growth over time. Curtis told Insider one takeaway of his and his co-author's research is just how large growth in these green energy jobs has been since 2007. They found job postings for wind and solar jobs have "more than tripled since 2010."
And more clean or green energy jobs could be made as a result of the Inflation Reduction Act.
"Clean energy tax credits will be increased by 10% if the clean energy projects are established in communities that have previously relied upon the extraction, processing, transport, or storage of coal, oil, or natural gas as a significant source of employment, creating jobs and economic development in the communities that have powered America for generations," a fact sheet from the White House about the Inflation Reduction Act stated.

]]>It appears that the phone was unceremoniously canceled right at the cusp of a public launch, which is a shame and a huge loss for phone enthusiasts. The LG Rollable had a lot going for it. The top and bottom edges have rail-inspired sliding mechanisms that extend/shrink the frame to reveal/hide the extra screen real estate.

When the LG Rollable is being used like a regular phone, the expandable portion of the screen that wrapped around the edge and covered just over half of the rear panel was turned off. However, if you flip the device, it can be turned on and used as a regular screen, albeit with limited functionality, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.
With the rear portion of the screen activated, the doomed LG phone also offered users the flexibility to use it as a viewfinder for clicking selfies using the high-resolution rear cameras. The idea is reminiscent of Huawei’s Mate X series foldable phones.

LG was also apparently not a fan of a notch, holes, or an ugly floating cutout for the front camera array. Instead, the selfie camera is tucked neatly in the top-left corner of the frame, offering a truly full-screen experience.
Over at the back, the rollable segment blended almost seamlessly with a raised rib housing the dual selfie camera and the fingerprint sensor right beneath it. The biometric hardware is the reliable round sensor, instead of the cramped pill-shaped and side-mounted fingerprint sensors on modern-day phones.
There appears to be some kind of pressure or light sensor on the right edge that activates the display rolling and unrolling behavior. The mechanism appears to be quite robust, enough to move a couple of thick books as the screen unfolds.
However, a three-finger swipe from the left to the right edge, or vice versa, would also do the job. It also looks quite neat and almost flawlessly executed by LG’s engineers. Plus, there’s a one-tap quick toggle button system that can be accessed by swiping inward from the right edge to do the same.
As the display slides open to reveal a tablet-like expanse, the UI elements also expand accordingly. For example, the Settings app smoothly expands to a two-row format, a design element that Google showcased with Android 12L. LG also appears to have created a side panel-like system that we see on Samsung’s One UI skin, allowing users to access their favorite apps and tools in a jiffy.

The display in its natural state is a 6.8-inch unit, but when it’s rolled out, it offers a tablet-esque 7.4-inch panel. The lights are kept on by a 4,500mAh battery, but there’s no scope for wireless charging owing to the design.
The aspect ratio is on the taller side at 1.5:1, which is a far cry from the squarish approach taken by the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Oppo Find N. But the tall aspect ratio on the LG Rollable is also quite advantageous, because letterboxing is minimal while watching videos, and the situation with games would also be more palatable.

As far as specs go, the rear camera setup includes a 64-megapixel main snapper capable of 8K video capture, sitting alongside a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle shooter. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 keeps it ticking in tandem with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

Tipping the scales at 285 grams, the LG Rollable fell in the same weight class as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Going by the level of software finesse and the solid hardware of the engineering prototype, it appears that the LG Rollable was nixed at the last moment.
Oppo is currently working on the same formula, but its own take on the concept got stuck in quality assessment hell after showcasing it to journalists and releasing a few tantalizing teaser videos.

If Alberta doctors ratify a proposed new agreement with the provincial government, the government has pledged to reverse a controversial legislative change, say documents obtained by CBC News.

It also looks like the model seen in a leaked instructional video. He also revealed the new controllers, with a new design (again, much like the one in the leaked instructional video) that replaces the previous looped controllers.

The packaging shows “Meta Quest Pro,” along with a sticker that says “Not for resale – engineering sample.” It also shows images of the headset and controllers. Cardenas told The Verge that the room’s occupant has since claimed the headsets.

With the Quest Pro, Mark Zuckerberg promised a “higher-end virtual reality experience,” with a non-wired headset. He hinted that it could have additional sensors that make it useful for activities beyond gaming, along with eye tracking, face tracking and more. “It’s amazing for gaming, but it’s not only for gaming,” he said. Previously, the name “Meta Quest Pro” was spotted in Meta code by Bloomberg, so that appears to be the final name.

Britain's Parliament anticipated its use of TikTok could be "controversial" because of the app's links to China and prepared a plan to defend itself against any blowback, internal documents have revealed.
The legislative body abandoned a pilot using the video app after only a few days, following a letter from a group of lawmakers saying TikTok had been "unable to reassure MPs that the company could prevent data transfer to ByteDance, should the parent company make a request for it."
An internal document, obtained by Insider under the UK's Freedom of Information Act, reveals Parliament anticipated TikTok's links to China could result in a hostile reaction.
The document specifically suggested asking the Parliamentary Security Department, or the PSD, whether the app was safe for parliamentary staffers' phones. "Once confirmed, this should be part of any media line," the document said.
But when Insider asked whether the PSD had concluded it was safe, Parliament declined to answer, saying: "We cannot go into any further detail about security measures taken."
The document Insider obtained — an "OASIS Communications and Evaluation Plan" — proposes other potential lines spokespeople can give to journalists.
These include: "That we use social media to reach audiences where they are; that a notably different demographic uses TikTok compared to our followers on other platforms; we are using TikTok as part of a limited pilot project, with a discrete project plan and evaluation."
The document notes that TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has links to China and adds that "Chinese tech companies have been the subject of recent controversy," specifically citing Huawei, the telecommunications company whose hardware the UK banned from its 5G network over security fears.
ByteDance has its headquarters in Beijing, but is domiciled in the Cayman Islands.
It has repeatedly denied it would hand user data to Chinese authorities.
A TikTok spokesperson told Insider: "The TikTok platform does not operate in China and we have never provided user data to the Chinese government.
"UK politicians and government departments use TikTok to reach millions of people in an engaging and creative way."
They added that TikTok would "welcome the opportunity to talk directly" to the politicians who signed the letter "to clarify the factual inaccuracies."
The documents Insider obtained show Parliament first considered launching a TikTok account in April 2021, more than a year before it established the account.
In August 2021, Parliament staff met TikTok staff and subsequently asked if the @UKParliament handle, which had been obtained by another user but had not been used, could be given to them, which it was.
A 13-page PowerPoint document was presented to staff on February 21, 2022, showing examples of other institutions that use TikTok for public outreach.
Internal discussions within Parliament continued until March 2022, when the project picked up the pace. One staff member emailed asking "to make sure it is a development that you would be happy with from a security perspective."
The emails appear to show security advice was offered, but redacted before being released to Insider. On March 30, one staff member wrote: "TikTok is GO!!! (nearly)."
Parliament launched the account on July 28.
In their letter, the lawmakers wrote they were "surprised and disappointed" and that the account should be closed "until credible assurances can be given that no data whatsoever can be transferred to China."
It sparked a flurry of emails within Parliament and by August 1, parliamentary authorities had decided to close the account.
On August 3, the speakers of both houses of Parliament wrote a joint letter to one of the lawmakers who protested, saying this was "in light of your feedback and concerns expressed."

The Apple Watch Pro will likely target extreme sports fanatics—the sort of folks who wouldn't mind spending close to $ 1,000 for Garmin's high-end smartwatches. While that may sound extravagant, don't forget that there have always been high-end Apple Watch models not meant for mortal wallets. The current Hermes Series 7 collection ranges all the way up to an eye-watering $ 1,759. So with that context, maybe a $ 1,000 Apple Watch Pro doesn't seem so crazy? (No, it's still crazy.)

As a stripped-down version of the Twentieth Century Fox theme plays, a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show begins. “And God said, Let there be lips!” And there were lips: red lips, white teeth, black background. An androgynous voice sings “Science fiction, double feature.” Between verses, the lips freeze in black and white before fading into a cross above a church.
If it were not for expensive usage rights and the studio’s inability to secure Shirley Bassey-level talent, these unforgettable ruby-red lips, singing a song with someone else’s voice, might never have come to be. An iconic and blustering introduction to one of cinema’s greatest cult films, the opening credits to The Rocky Horror Picture Show set the tone for the film’s punk energy and playfully paradoxical atmosphere.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, now one of the most successful cult films of all time, began as a stage play. Originally titled They Came from Denton High, it was written by Richard O’Brien while he was a broke actor trying to find work in London and intended as an homage to the science fiction B-movies he loved as a child.

The Bake Off host kept a straight face throughout as he delivered the surprise news to The One Show hosts, who by this point were giddy for their guest.
“I play a special policeman,” Matt continued, which brought a huge gasp from Alex.
An excitable Alex began to probe Matt: “You were telling us as well, you haven’t seen any of the footage yet.”
Matt’s poker face stayed strong as he concocted a tale about his time on the show: “They give you only some of the script, so I don’t even know what happens in the end.”

Matt, 43, was a host on The One Show alongside Alex Jones, 43, for almost a decade but last year, he made the decision to leave the programme. Due to coronavirus restrictions and the fact he was self-isolating at the time, the former Blue Peter star was unable to be in the studio when he bid farewell to viewers on March 31, 2020. However, when he made his grand comeback to promote his new show Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales, the BBC presenter said he was quite “emotional”.
Alex teased his return by telling viewers: “Now then. It’s a year to the day since he left The One Show.
“Let’s welcome back Matt Baker,” she continued as the father-of-two was seen feeding sheep on his family’s farm.
His former co-star asked: “Matthew, can you believe it’s been a year and you’re back on the show?
“How are you feeling?” she continued with Matt seemingly surprised by just how much the occasion meant to him.
“Do you know what?” Matt replied. “I feel quite emotional, to be honest with you.”
