Sometimes at Ars Technica, a staffer has to call in “sick” for reasons other than illness, emergency, or hangover. Those are all poor working states, but I would argue that one is even worse: a computer meltdown.

Everyone on staff has suffered at least one of these (or its awful cousin, the ISP outage) and been left distracted or set back to some extent. But when the crash in question happens to the thing you’re supposed to test? That’s a problem.

And when it happens because you used official Microsoft downloads? Oh, that’s an Ars article.

You are a rude, terrible person! Trump and CNN's Acosta get into shouting match https://briefnews.eu/you-are-a-rude-terrible-person-trump-and-cnns-acosta-get-into-shouting-match/ https://briefnews.eu/you-are-a-rude-terrible-person-trump-and-cnns-acosta-get-into-shouting-match/#respond Wed, 07 Nov 2018 18:33:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-are-a-rude-terrible-person-trump-and-cnns-acosta-get-into-shouting-match/

Donald Trump and CNN’s Jim Acosta clashed at the President’s post-midterm press conference. Trump lashed out at Acosta, saying CNN “should be ashamed” of him and he’s been horrible to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

After congratulating Republican candidates on their victories and striking a bipartisan tone towards the now Democrat-controlled House, Trump took questions from the press on Wednesday.

CNN’s Jim Acosta took Trump to task, grilling the president on a recent campaign ad depicting a thousands-strong ‘caravan’ of Central American migrants heading for the US border as an “invasion.”

Trump defended his characterization of the migrants, telling Acosta “you should let me run the country, you run CNN.”

“If you did it well, your ratings would be much better,” Trump snarked.

Acosta again tried to badger Trump, and the president lost his cool, shouting “that’s enough!” at the reporter. Acosta refused to sit down, then switched gears, asking the president if he is “concerned” about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing and still fruitless ‘Russiagate’ investigation.

“I’m not concerned about anything with the Russia investigation because that’s a hoax,” Trump replied, before telling Acosta to “put down the mic.” Trump walked away from the lectern until Acosta calmed down, then came back with a stern lecture for Acosta.

“I tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself, having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN…the way you treat other people is horrible.”

“When you report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you are the enemy of the people,” Trump said, before Acosta sat back down.

Acosta has positioned himself as one of Trump’s most prominent critics in the media, and has often gotten personal in his dealings with the Trump administration. After tweeting a rambling complaint about the volume of the music at Trump’s campaign-style rallies last month, Acosta messaged a former White House official who responded, telling him to “f*ck off.”

Trump’s ongoing feud with CNN has seen the president skip over Acosta at press conferences, and has seen the president’s supporters boo the reporter at rallies. Trump also hit out at Acosta on Wednesday for being rude towards Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Reaction to Trump and Acosta’s spat online was mixed, and both president and reporter were accused of acting immaturely.

Wednesday’s conference also saw the President snap at NBC News’ Peter Alexander and CNN’s April Ryan. Trump blasted Alexander for “trying to be like” Acosta, and Ryan for “rudely interrupting” another reporter.

Police search for Georgia man who ripped hijab off Muslim girl's head while shouting 'terrorist' https://briefnews.eu/police-search-for-georgia-man-who-ripped-hijab-off-muslim-girls-head-while-shouting-terrorist/ https://briefnews.eu/police-search-for-georgia-man-who-ripped-hijab-off-muslim-girls-head-while-shouting-terrorist/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 19:49:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/police-search-for-georgia-man-who-ripped-hijab-off-muslim-girls-head-while-shouting-terrorist/

Police are searching for a man accused of ripping a headscarf off a Muslim teenager while yelling “terrorist” at a mall in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Authorities are calling the incident an assault and have vowed to conduct a “thorough investigation.”

The incident occurred at around 9:40pm local time on Tuesday, when the 14-year-old was walking with a group in the parking lot of Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, Georgia.

A man approached the girl and ripped the hijab off her head while yelling “terrorist,”according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC). He then ran off with the headscarf.

“He kept tugging and tugging, and she realized he was tugging on her hijab,” the girl’s mother told local NBC affiliate WXIA-TV. She added that her daughter thought the man appeared to be drunk, but “wasn’t sure.”

Police are calling the incident an assault, and Dunwoody police chief Billy Grogan says a “thorough investigation” will be conducted.

Authorities are currently combing through mall surveillance footage to find a decent image of the man, who has so far only been described as an older white male, according to WAGA-TV.

The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has dubbed the attack “despicable” and “the latest in a wave of anti-Muslim hate crimes across the nation,” according to a statement by CAIR-Georgia’s executive director Edward Ahmed Mitchell.

The organization is offering a $ 1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man, who is wanted on charges of simple assault and theft.

CAIR-Georgia said the girl’s family is shaken up by the attack, but will not press charges if the man comes forward and apologizes.

Just last month, CAIR-Georgia urged mosques in the Atlanta area to increase security, after death threats were received by mosques in the city, as well as the suburbs of Lawrenceville and Norcross.

Intel Jumps Up and Down Shouting 'We're Here Too' With $15.3 Billion Mobileye Acquisition https://briefnews.eu/intel-jumps-up-and-down-shouting-were-here-too-with-15-3-billion-mobileye-acquisition/ https://briefnews.eu/intel-jumps-up-and-down-shouting-were-here-too-with-15-3-billion-mobileye-acquisition/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 14:57:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/intel-jumps-up-and-down-shouting-were-here-too-with-15-3-billion-mobileye-acquisition/

Intel just plunked down $ 15.3 billion for Mobileye, a leading manufacturer of sensors and cameras for autonomous cars, as it tries to catch up with microchip rivals Nvidia and Qualcomm in the driverless car industry.

The deal is the latest movement in an increasingly cozy relationship between Intel and Mobileye. The companies agreed to a partnership in November that allowed Intel to provide the specialized microchips to Mobileye’s crash avoidance system; in January, they also announced they were working with BMW to roll out at least 40 autonomous vehicles by the second half of 2017.

But Intel’s bid for Mobileye is also the latest move from the chipmaker to catch up to rivals like Qualcomm and Nvidia, who have spent the last two years building a substantial lead in the automotive industry as suppliers of driverless car system processors and software.

Last year, Qualcomm became the top seller of semiconductors for the car business when it agreed to buy NXP Semiconductors for $ 38 billion. Nvidia has also been selling its graphics processing units (GPUs) and software to leading autonomous car companies like Audi, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo.

While Intel is still the world’s largest chip maker for personal computers and data centers, the company arguably got beat in the mobile chipset industry, which is now dominated by companies like Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm. The Mobileye acquisition appears to be a bid to insure that the company isn’t beat again in the next major chipset shift.

The acquisition doesn’t come without wrinkles, though. In September, the company abruptly ended its relationship with Tesla following several crashes involving Tesla’s autopilot feature. In an interview with Reuters, Mobileye chairman and CTO Amnon Shashua claimed that Tesla was “pushing the envelope in terms of safety.” Tesla denied the accusation, and claimed Mobileye tried to make the company pay more for parts it was selling and tried to make Tesla promise to use its parts in future releases.

Intel’s acquisition of Mobileye comes as companies like Google, Uber, General Motors, and Tesla continue to invest millions of dollars into the driverless car industry. Now, Intel is effectively hopping up and down in an effort to join the fray—let’s just hope it’s worth it, given the price tag.

Sean Spicer Makes First Official Statements As White House Press Secretary

We won’t have had a full business weekday of President Trump’s new administration until Monday evening, but already we’ve seen the enormity of the worldwide Women’s March the day after Friday’s inauguration, and Saturday evening a visibly perturbed White House press secretary Sean Spicer took the first official press briefing under Donald Trump as an opportunity to lash out at the journalists present over what he characterized as mistreatment by the media regarding Inaugural crowd sizes on the Mall at Washington, DC as compared to previous years.

The backlash was that when CNN fact-checked six of Spicer’s major talking points, they claimed only one could be verified as true. CNN also reported that three of Spicer’s other claims were false, one inconclusive and one misleading, and in a Sunday morning interview with NBC‘s Chuck Todd of Meet The Press, Senior Adviser Kellyanne Conway appeared at times to be in a shouting match with the journalist when he questioned her about the White House motives behind what he interpreted as unnecessarily alleging falsehoods over a trivial issue like crowd size.

Dispute Over The Truth

Two of press secretary Spicer’s major claims about President Trump’s inaugural crowd size were that this year’s event marked the first time a protective grass covering had been used on the Mall, which accentuated areas where people were sparsely congested and that this was also the first time fenced areas and magnetometers had been used at so large a perimeter, preventing hundreds of thousands of people from accessing the mall.

CNN producer Kevin Liptak and his fact checkers disputed both of those claims as false. In regards to the claim about the new protective lawn covering, they reported that

Photos from the 2013 inauguration clearly show white ground coverings being laid on the National Mall ahead of President Barack Obama’s second swearing-in. Reporters who covered the event also recall the white plastic flooring that was laid along the National Mall to protect the grass.

The assumption is that Obama’s crowds were excessively larger, making it impossible to see the lawn covering when the crowd reached full capacity. When investigating Spicer’s remarks about the perimeter fence and the use of metal detecting “wands” or magnetometers, CNN had this to say

The Secret Service, the agency responsible for securing the event, acknowledged that the secure area for this year’s inauguration was larger than in years past, but the extra measures included only fences and bag checks and not magnetometers….”There were seven access points where bag checks only were conducted.” The spokesperson added that magnetometers — which includes hand wands — also weren’t used.

Trump Senior Adviser Appears On Meet The Press

As is customary for the major media Sunday TV News circuit, President Trump Senior Adviser Kellyanne Conway appeared this morning to act as spokesperson for Trump and the administration. Sharing Trump and Spicer’s disdain for the media, Conway became agitated with host Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet The Press and basically refused to acknowledge Todd when he prompted her to explain the motivation behind Spicer having suggested repeated untruths at Saturday’s briefing.

“You’ve make a very reasonable, rational case” said Todd, regarding the triviality of inaugural crowd sizes,”but you haven’t answered the question, why did the president send out his press secretary….for the very first time…to utter a very provable falsehood?”

“If you’re going to continue to refer to our press secretary in those types of terms,” replied Conway “I think we’re going to have to rethink our relationship here.”

Shouting Match Over ‘Alternative Facts”

The conversation escalated, with Conway taking offense to a separate story leaked on Friday by a White House press pool member, who on Twitter had initially reported not seeing the bust of MLK traditionally placed in the Oval Office and wrongly assumed Trump had removed it. The story was officially retracted hours later.

When pressed again to answer the question regarding Sean Spicer’s briefing facts, Conway refused to let Todd speak.

“No. No, no, no, no no no!” she retorted,”Excuse me…..don’t be so overly dramatic…..Sean Spicer offered alternative facts”

“Alternative facts?” Todd chuckled, and the bickering went on. Watch the whole interview here.
