Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 review: The best foldable phone you can buy, but that doesn’t mean you should https://briefnews.eu/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-4-review-the-best-foldable-phone-you-can-buy-but-that-doesnt-mean-you-should/ https://briefnews.eu/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-4-review-the-best-foldable-phone-you-can-buy-but-that-doesnt-mean-you-should/#respond Fri, 23 Sep 2022 21:18:58 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-4-review-the-best-foldable-phone-you-can-buy-but-that-doesnt-mean-you-should/ When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the best foldable you can buy, but there are still so many compromises for its high price.

  • The $ 1,000 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 aims to justify its price with beauty and performance.
  • Compared to a traditional flat phone, however, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is full of compromises.
  • Battery life is mediocre and the foldable phone concept presents usability challenges.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is almost a mirror-copy of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 with the bare minimum of upgrades, including 2022's top Android processor. Like its predecessor, there's lots to love about Samsung's newest foldable phone, but there are some missed opportunities, too.

The company set out to fix what desperately needed to be fixed, which was the Z Flip 3's short battery life. Even then, the company hasn't really fixed it — rather, it's been addressed and improved, instead of something new and better.

The Z Flip 4 could also have been an opportunity to make phone actually flip open with one hand rather than needing two hands to unfold due to the stiff hinge. It was also an opportunity to bring down the price, or at least give it comparable battery life and camera quality as other $ 1,000 phones.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is ideal for small pockets, but it's a chore to unfold it

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 folded.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a space-saver when folded, but the two-handed unfold is a chore every time you want to use the phone.

Don't be surprised if people ask why you're still using a flip phone, because foldable smartphones are still a novel concept. The appeal is that you can have a full-size smartphone that clams up to fit easily in pockets. Unlike the "mini" versions of regular smartphones, you don't sacrifice screen size.

The Z Fold 4 is undeniably beautiful with its frosted, matte-textured glass that tastefully contrasts with the shiny metal frame and hinge on our purple review unit. I tend to prefer neutral colors on phones, like whites, silvers, blacks, and blues, but the purple is gorgeous.

But, unfolding it every time you want to use the phone can be a tiresome chore; the hinge is so stiff that it requires both hands. If you're expecting the thumb-flip experience from the old-school Motorola Razr, the Z Flip 4 will disappoint.

The back of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 rear partially unfolded.

It's possible to unfold the Z Flip 4 with a single hand, but it's an awkward motion — the Z Flip 4 isn't designed for one-handed unfolding. Not to mention there isn't a notch for thumbs to grip and flip.  You might think it sounds trivial, but I found it bothersome enough to mention.

It's clear that Samsung also recognizes this problem, which is why it made the Z Flip 4's outer screen more useful than before. It's tiny, but it displays notifications, lets you control music, set a timer, shows your day's calendar events, and lets you reply to texts with voice. You can even use it as a viewfinder for the main cameras to get better quality selfies, or simply take photos without unfolding the phone. However, you'll need to unfold the phone to use it in most meaningful ways.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4's foldable display still suffers from its inherent quirks

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a crease where the phone folds, which is typical on foldable phones.

You'll find a crease where the screen folds, which is an unavoidable trait of foldable phones. Samsung did a good job hiding it: It is nearly invisible while using the phone and it has no negative impact on the phone's usefulness. In fact, I find it oddly satisfying and fun to run my thumb across the crease.

A more concerning quirk is the Z Flip 4's lack of dust resistance, especially in the hinge. It's interesting that Samsung made it water resistant but didn't go further to make it even more rugged. I brought the Z Flip 4 to the beach during testing but realized sand could get into the hinge mechanism, possibly causing all sorts of havoc. So, the Z Flip 4 stayed in my pocket while I used my traditional "flat" phone to take photos.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 runs incredibly fast, but the screen can feel cramped

The crease where the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4’s screen folds.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4's display is narrower than those on flat phones, which cramps apps and content.

Swiping around the Samsung-customized Android operating system and opening apps is as smooth and snappy as can possibly be, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and the 120-hertz (Hz) display. The latter means it refreshes the display 120 times per second compared to 60 times per second like standard 60Hz screens.

However, the Z Flip 4's narrow display width makes everything look cramped on the screen, including videos, photos, text, and any app content, really. Everything looks smaller than it should on a large 6.7-inch screen because it's being squeezed by the display's narrowness.

Battery life is longer, but still not as good as a flat phone

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
The Galaxy Z Flip 4's battery life is an improvement over the Z Flip 3, but it's still not on par with traditional flat phones.

Where the Z Flip 3's battery life would get into the single-digit numbers before bedtime, the Z Flip 4 would last longer with around 20% battery life remaining. During testing, I got about two hours of continuous use, which included video streaming, running apps (Reddit, Slack, Chrome, Twitter, and Instagram), messaging, and shooting photos. This is about half the battery life we would expect from a standard phone with a much larger battery, so expect the need to top-off the Z Flip 4 during the day.

Samsung upped the Z Flip 4's charging speed to 25W versus 15W on the Z Flip 3. It means you can recharge the Z Flip 4 faster, which is especially useful when the phone's battery life is shorter than a regular phone's. Plus, it supports 10W wireless charging for slower, lengthier charging, which is ideal if you're sitting at a desk or on the couch for a while.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 supports faster 25W charging than the Z Flip 3, which is a meaningful improvement and helps the phone charge faster.

Samsung doesn't include a charger and you'll need one that handles at least 25 watts. You may have one already, but if not, we recommend Anker's 30W 711 Nano II charger, or something that can handle multiple devices, like Anker's 65W GanPrime 735 for a phone and a tablet, or Anker's 120W GanPrime 737 for a phone and a laptop.

Despite missing a zoom lens, the camera system is solid

The Z Flip 4 has a dual-lens camera system that includes an ultra-wide lens. It won't disappoint if you simply want something good and reliable. Our only complaint is that it tends to boost colors a little too much, but all Samsung phone cameras suffer from this.

Compared to the triple-lens cameras you get on Samsung's Galaxy S22 series, which includes a 3x zoom lens, the Z Flip 4 is inferior. The S22's main camera sensor performs better in low-light as well.

Yet, the Z Flip 4 has a neat trick up its sleeve that lets you record video and take photos of yourself hands-free, and it's made possible with the phone's foldable design. It's called Flexcam, and it lets you fold the Z Flip 4 about halfway so the phone can sit on its own. It's like having a tripod to record video or take photos, and it's clearly designed for the social media crowd.

You can prop the Galaxy Z Flip 4, almost like a tripod, to take hands-free photos and videos of yourself.

Should you buy the Galaxy Z Flip 4?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 in the folded position.

Perhaps the real question is, do you really want a foldable phone? If the concept appeals to you, then the Z Flip 4 is what we'd recommend on account of its excellent performance, design, and solid cameras.

But, foldable phones aren't something we would recommend to most people — at least, not the current generation. As a daily driver, there are too many compromises and shortcomings that overshadow its space-saving benefit, like the constant folding and unfolding, screen width, and shorter battery life.

Compared with most regular phones, the Z Flip 4 is also expensive at $ 1,000. It's the same price as the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S22 Plus, both of which have superior cameras, performance, and battery life.

I'm not telling you to stay away — it is a well-made device — but I'm also not saying it should be on your shortlist.

  • Hayley Bennett runs @that_coupon_chick, an Instagram page focused on coupons and deals, and recommends Ibotta as her favorite app.
  • She started couponing to save on diapers and it turned into her full-time job.
  • This is her story, as told to Mary Beth Gahan.

I spend my days helping people learn how to coupon, find clearance deals, and save money.

I started my Instagram account in early 2020 because I was always telling people about the deals I was getting. My boyfriend at the time said, "Why don't you just put it online so the people interested in it will see it?" It just kind of grew from there.

My desire to find coupons came from a real need: In 2016, I was a broke college student and a new mom.

Everything was expensive and I was trying to find a way to save as much money as I could. I didn't really think I was going to get into couponing like I did. I thought I was just going to use coupons here and there, save a little bit of money. Then I realized just how much this could really impact people and how much money you really could save.

Saving money this way gave me financial independence to be my own boss

I started in 2021 with about 2,000 followers. At the beginning of this year, I had 10,000. Now, I'm at 23,000. It used to be a side gig thing, but with the referrals, brand deals and sponsorships, this is my main job. It's great. Growing up, I always wanted to do something for myself on my own and not worry about being bossed around by people.

Coupons are out there, you just have to know where to look

When I wake up, I'll check different apps and see if any rebates have been posted. If they have, then I kind of cross-check with the sales going on with Target, Publix, CVS, wherever. Then, I search for coupons online. Really all you have to do is Google the brand and the coupon you're trying to find. Google does a pretty good job of pulling up anything relevant.

Then I go to the store, find the deals, and take pictures and videos. After that, I post the deals for people on my page.

Newspapers are no longer the place to look for coupons

Over the past couple of years and especially since Covid started, more companies are starting to pull coupons out of the Sunday paper insert. The Smart Source inserts also harder to find. But you can get the coupons digitally, like through the Kroger app or the Target app.

A lot of stores are now changing their coupon policies; they're not wanting to accept printable coupons or paper coupons anymore because of people using them illegally or printing multiple coupons. I think a lot of stores and a lot of brands are going digital, so they want people to do more of the apps and the rebate apps.

You shouldn't be paying for things you use every day

There are ways to save pretty much across the board. I never pay for toilet paper, skincare products or makeup – even diapers and wipes. You can get those extremely cheap. I think the main things that people for sure can get for free, or even make money getting through rebate apps, are toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner. The things people use every day, there is no need to ever pay for those because there's always a sale, a coupon or a rebate app that you can use to get them for free.

There's one app I recommend getting right away

I use a multitude of apps, but if anyone was going to get just one app, get Ibotta. It has the most rebates on it and it's super user-friendly. All you have to is upload your receipt, click the items you got, then you get reimbursed through an account.

The Atlantic hurricane season peaks on September 10.

To state the obvious: This has been an unorthodox Atlantic hurricane season.

Everyone from the US agency devoted to studying weather, oceans, and the atmosphere—the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration—to the most highly regarded hurricane professionals predicted a season with above-normal to well above-normal activity.

For example, NOAA’s outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, predicted a 65 percent chance of an above-normal season, a 25 percent chance of a near-normal season and a 10 percent chance of a below-normal season. The primary factor behind these predictions was an expectation that La Niña would persist in the Pacific Ocean, leading to atmospheric conditions in the tropical Atlantic more favorable to storm formation and intensification. La Niña has persisted, but the storms still have not come in bunches.

Tesla wants the public to decide where its next Superchargers should go https://briefnews.eu/tesla-wants-the-public-to-decide-where-its-next-superchargers-should-go/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-wants-the-public-to-decide-where-its-next-superchargers-should-go/#respond Fri, 09 Sep 2022 09:36:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/tesla-wants-the-public-to-decide-where-its-next-superchargers-should-go/ Tesla already has 35,000-plus Superchargers around the world, but it can be a mystery as to exactly how it chooses locations. Now via a new Twitter poll, the company is asking the public to tell it where they want the next superchargers to be installed, TechCrunch has reported.

Some of the top-requested sites are the least accessible, including US National Parks, Vancouver Island, Hawaii and Alaska. If you've ever been to British Columbia you'll notice a lot of Tesla EVs driving around, but there are only a pair of Supercharger stations on Vancouver Island in Victoria and Nanaimo. Similarly, there's only a single station in Alaska at Soldotna, and a lone six-bay facility in Honolulu. It would also make sense to install Superchargers at National Park gateways often located in remote regions.

Tesla has 1,469 Supercharger locations in the US, with the number of charge points varying widely per station. However, station growth has lagged behind Tesla EV sales — the latter grew 87 percent in 2021, but Supercharger installations increased just 35 percent. This could become a bigger problem soon, as the company said it will open up its Supercharger network to non-Tesla vehicles.

Installing them isn't quite as simple as throwing money around, either. Tesla recently posted a job ad for its Canadian Supercharger design team, noting that applicants require experience in site permitting, construction feasibility, utility service requests and more. The company recently told sites hosting Superchargers that they're good for business, with average monthly charging visits between 2,000 to 5,000 at locations in Vancouver, BC.

Stroke: Older people should cut back on a popular food – ‘Causes blockages’ in arteries https://briefnews.eu/stroke-older-people-should-cut-back-on-a-popular-food-causes-blockages-in-arteries/ https://briefnews.eu/stroke-older-people-should-cut-back-on-a-popular-food-causes-blockages-in-arteries/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 12:46:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/stroke-older-people-should-cut-back-on-a-popular-food-causes-blockages-in-arteries/

THE RISK of most medical conditions increases as we get older. This is true for strokes, which are more likely to occur after the age of 55. This is partly because our arteries naturally become narrower and harder, as well as becoming clogged by fatty substances.

BRUSHING your teeth twice a day is something most people are brought up to do. It’s a way to maintain oral health and keep those teeth and the mouth in question in top condition. However, new research suggests it might not be enough to ward off heart failure.
