Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the neck on May 11 while covering a raid in the West Bank.

  • Israel's military said there's a "high possibility" its forces killed journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
  • It said it couldn't tell for sure where the gunfire came from and won't pursue a criminal probe.
  • Abu Akleh had been shot in the neck in May while wearing a vest and helmet marked "Press."

The Israel Defense Forces said on Monday there was a "high possibility" that one of its soldiers shot and killed renowned Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

Its conclusion comes at the end of its probe into whether Israeli troops caused the death of Abu Akleh, who was shot in the neck on May 11 while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank. She had been wearing a helmet and vest marked with "Press" when she was shot.

The findings of the IDF's report are the closest that the nation's military has come to an admission of responsibility.

"It appears that it is not possible to unequivocally determine the source of the gunfire which hit Ms. Abu Akleh," the IDF said in a statement.

However, it noted that there was a "high possibility" that the journalist was "accidentally hit" by Israeli gunfire "that was fired toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen," the statement added.

The statement said that Abu Akleh hadn't been identified as a member of the press by its soldiers at the time, and IDF soldiers hadn't carried out any "intentional gunfire in a manner intended to harm the journalist."

As such, the country's military legal authority said it wouldn't pursue a criminal investigation into the soldier or soldiers involved in the case, per the IDF statement.

It noted: "Another possibility which remains relevant is that Ms. Abu Akleh was hit by bullets fired by armed Palestinian gunmen."

The IDF has maintained that Abu Akleh was killed in an active combat situation between its forces and Palestinian militants.

Multiple investigations by media outlets such as CNN and the Associated Press concluded that it was likely Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli gunfire. By assessing video footage of the incident, CNN found that there was no active combat situation, nor were any Palestinian militants near Abu Akleh just before or at the time of her death.

In June, a United Nations investigation determined that Israeli forces had fired the shot that killed Abu Akleh. It also found "no information suggesting that there was activity by armed Palestinians in the immediate vicinity of the journalists."

Posters of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh ,who was killed by Israeli Forces, is seen during the preparations for U.S. President Joe Biden's visit in Bethlehem, West Bank on July 14, 2022
With her death, Abu Akleh has become a martyr for supporters of the Palestinian cause and for journalists covering the conflict.

Abu Akleh's family released a statement on Monday in response to the IDF's report.

"As expected, Israel has refused to take responsibility for murdering Shireen. Our family is not surprised by this outcome since it's obvious to anyone that Israeli war criminals cannot investigate their own crimes," it said.

Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based network that Abu Akleh worked for, condemned the IDF's statement and called it an "elusive admission" to "evade the criminal responsibility for the killing of Shireen."

The US State Department said it welcomed Israel's review of the incident and emphasized "the importance of accountability in this case," urging the IDF to adopt additional policies and procedures to prevent similar deaths.

NCIS resumed Season 18 this Tuesday night with two episodes — one that had a light, rom-com vibe, and one that… did not. When all was said and done, what’d you think about the reveal of why Gibbs shot McGee in this season’s cold open?

We are not here to recap this week’s first episode, delightful as it was, in which Tim and Delilah enjoyed their most fun together time in a while by helping crack a case during their Bahamian getaway. No, we are here to discuss the second hour, which leaped us forward three months, to the same timeline as the teaser that opened the season, where Gibbs for some reason shot at McGee from a sniper’s perch at an airport.

With Fornell still AWOL, Gibbs was fixing to amp up the investigation into the opioid ring led by the mysterious “Merriweather.” Vance, though, said that SECNAV had pulled the plug, and it would be the DEA’s case now. Desperate, Gibbs dashed off to the airport from Fornell’s photo, where he spotted a jet with Merriweather’s horse head logo. Seeing a man emerge from the jet, Gibbs tackled him — and it was Fornell! Starting with Fornell’s knee to Gibbs’ family jewels, a “fake fight” ensued (for the sake of the security cameras Tobias had set up). As they humorously traded wayward gunfire, Fornell explained that a big shipment was due soon, one that was somehow “different.” When Gibbs orders his friend to “read me in!,” Fornell told him to check his glove box in a few minutes.

Gibbs shows Vance was Tobias left for him — a glassine of opioids that are somehow “different” from the rest, and a very blurry photo of Merriweather. Vance says that his new priority is a report of a possible terrorist attack on a military base, but he gives Gibbs and his team 72 hours to do what they can do. Kasie works on enhancing the photo (which actually netted instant results, albeit in the form of a man with multiple names/passports), while Bishop and Torres looked into a petty officer who had gotten hooked on Vicodin and then began dealing for Merriweather, working out of a series of Beltway Burgers locations. They also learn that, curiously, the price on the new pills had been lowered from $ 20 each to just five dollars. But why?

Well, the PO in question turned up dead — not from the opiates in his system, but from a poison they had been laced with. So, Merriweather’s plan — the terrorist attack Vance had heard about — was to circulate the lethal pills via the Beltway Burgers that all neighbored military bases, targeting potentially thousands of officers.

NCIS Fornell TorresSloane combs through the Beltway Burgers personnel files and finds that Fornell’s shift manager, greasy-haired “Chad,” is actually Vladimir Ivanov. Posing as an exterminator, Torres scouts out Vlad’s property, while Bishop runs comms from a van. When “Chad” confronts the bug man, Torres produces a work order from the HOA, while spotting Fornell inside the house. “Chad” is about to let Torres go when he gets a text warning him of surveillance. Vlad spins to shoot Torres in the back, but Fornell puts down the Russian first. Alas, Torres and Fornell then realize the bad guys have grabbed Bishop from the van.

After sending Fornell and Torres to scout out a warehouse that funnels the drugs, Gibbs takes a call from Merriweather, passing himself off as “Toby.” Merriweather wants to trade something G-man Toby wants, Bishop, for his right hand man Vladimir, whom he appears to think was merely arrested and not killed. “Toby” agrees to the trade in one hour, then ropes McGee into a plan in which a ballcap-wearing McGee will at least briefly pose as Fornell, while Gibbs sets up a sniper’s perch. But just as McGee drives onto the airstrip and cuts off the plane presumably carrying Merriweather and Bishop, his comms go out. As such, Vance and Gibbs are not able to alert him to new intel that the plane he is about to approach is rigged to explode.

It falls on Gibbs to stop Tim from nearing the plane — first with warning shots, which McGee assumes are from a baddie, and then with hits to his arm and his leg. McGee is down, yes, but saved from the fiery plane explosion that soon follows. Bishop meanwhile emerges from the hangar to reunite with/embrace Torres, having fought her way free of the goon who was guarding her.

As for Merriweather? Tracking him (aka Alexi Myshkin) proved remarkably easy, seeing as he stayed in town for the 21st birthday party for his daughter, who had been helping him launder/hide his millions.

Later, while Fornell reunites with daughter Emily (who though peeved with his vanishing act gives him her six-month sobriety chip), Gibbs heads to the hospital to get an update from Delilah on Tim, who is out of surgery but not out of the woods (the leg shot hit a femoral artery). Gibbs starts to apologize/explain himself, but Delilah cuts him off, saying she knows he had no choice — and besides, “You saved Tim’s life.”

Drag Race All Stars Recap: Which Queen Sabotaged Her Own Shot at the Crown? https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-all-stars-recap-which-queen-sabotaged-her-own-shot-at-the-crown/ https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-all-stars-recap-which-queen-sabotaged-her-own-shot-at-the-crown/#respond Sat, 13 Jun 2020 03:47:50 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-all-stars-recap-which-queen-sabotaged-her-own-shot-at-the-crown/

Miz Cracker might want to change her name to Miz Chief after the shenanigans she pulled on Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

Right off the bat, the salty li’l thing announces to her fellow queens that she’s been up all night wondering whether she voted for the right person last week. “I feel I should have brought in some White-Out,” she tells the girls, none of whom prompted this shady confession. Turning to Ongina, Cracker then says, “Derrick [Barry] and Mayhem [Miller] believed they could do it, and you didn’t believe in yourself, and that’s an all-star thing. You are an all star, and you have to believe in yourself.”

Side-eyeing abounds as the queens attempt to figure out where the tuck this is coming from. And while Ongina appears too taken aback to stand up for herself, Jujubee has no problem summing up the group’s collective feelings about Cracker with three little words: “Go to bed.”

The shade continues when RuPaul asks last week’s winner, India Ferrah, to reveal which queens she considers her biggest competitors. She names Shea Coulee and Blair St. Clair with little hesitation, and all three are named team captains for this week’s maxi challenge, a show-stopping musical tribute to each of the queens’ celebrity crushes. India recruits Jujubee and Alexis Mateo, Blair snatches up Cracker and Mayhem, and Shea picks Mariah Paris Balenciaga; poor Ongina is then added to Shea and Mariah’s team by default.

The final product is… I don’t know… fine? The song is cute, but the costumes have no discernible connection to the crushes being mentioned, and only a few queens — including Blair, who opts to lust after Hannibal Lecter, and Jujubee, who invites John Stamos to fill up her house — actually make the judges laugh. The whole thing feels like a rough draft.

Fortunately, the contestants get a second shot to shine via this week’s runway, themed “Love the Skin You’re In.” Cracker embraces her inner “Jewish princess,” Mayhem hits the stage literally dripping (nay, oozing!) in glamour, and Alexis gets everyone’s attention in a leather dress designed in her skin tone. But no one commands the judges’ attention quite like Shea, who serves “Nubian goddess realness” in a skin-tight bodysuit that accentuates (and illuminates) all the right parts. It’s like a sexy biology lesson, and it earns Shea her well-deserved first win of the season.

India, Mariah and Ongina make up this week’s bottom three, and it’s immediately evident that this elimination is going to be dramatique. Ongina makes sure of that by breaking down in tears backstage, telling the group, “I have so much more to give, and I want to give it. I know I have the hunger, I have the drive, I want to be here so bad. But you don’t have to deliberate with me, because [neither India nor Mariah] deserve to go home tonight. This is not me giving up. This is the fairest thing to do.” In other words, while Ongina isn’t technically removing herself from the competition, she’s making everyone’s decision a lot easier.

Seeing Ongina in such a low place inspires Cracker to fumble her way through another faux-tivational speech. “A lot of winners start out in the bottom multiple times, and it’s not fair for anyone to say that it means you don’t have what it takes,” she tells Ongina. “I made your morning difficult a while ago, and it was stupid.” That said, Cracker also tells the camera, “Did I mean what I said? Absolutely. But does it help me to make Ongina feel bad? Does it help Ongina to feel bad? No. That’s the mistake.” (And this queen really wonders how she developed a reputation for being “difficult.”)

Drag Race All StarsIt’s now time for big Ru-veal! With $ 20,000 and a deciding vote on the line, Shea is joined on stage by none other than Drag Race legend Alyssa Edwards. Shea is understandably nervous about taking on such an esteemed assassin, but her nerves soon melt away as she effortlessly crushes the competition. (Side note: Shea absolutely killed this, but did anyone else expect Alyssa to put up a better fight? I’m not saying she threw the battle, but we’ve definitely seen more from her in past lip syncs. Something about this didn’t feel like the work of a true assassin.)

Which brings us to the moment of truth: “I think you are all unbelievably amazing and so talented,” She told the bottom three, “but he queen that I’ve chosen… is Ongina.” As she left the stage, India told her, “You were a giant, and I don’t want to hear anything different.”

“I’m disappointed that my time here is so short, but this is not the last that you’ll see of me,” Ongina told the viewers. “I promise you that. I’ll haunt you in your dreams, and my legacy will live on forever and ever. And ever!”

Also worth discussing…

* How do we feel about Jujubee admitting that she voted to eliminate Mayhem last week? Jujubee says it wasn’t personal, but Mayhem isn’t convinced. (Cracker also doesn’t think Jujubee’s vote was personal, but I don’t seem to recall either of them asking for her opinion.)

* Is anyone else already picturing Shea’s picture hanging in the Hall of Fame? I know we’re only two weeks in, but she is bringing true winner energy to this season, and I’m here for it.

Your thoughts on this week’s elimination? The lip sync? Anything?! Vote for the queen you would have sent home below, then drop a comment with your take on the episode.

Empire Boss Hints at ‘Creative’ Plan B in Event Proper Finale Never Gets Shot https://briefnews.eu/empire-boss-hints-at-creative-plan-b-in-event-proper-finale-never-gets-shot/ https://briefnews.eu/empire-boss-hints-at-creative-plan-b-in-event-proper-finale-never-gets-shot/#respond Mon, 20 Apr 2020 22:58:35 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/empire-boss-hints-at-creative-plan-b-in-event-proper-finale-never-gets-shot/

News that Empire co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong hope to someday give fans a proper series finale was greeted with a healthy dose of skepticism last week. After all, Daniels made a similar assertion last summer in the wake of Star‘s abrupt cancellation, promising fans a “movie of the week to wrap things up.” Such a project has yet to come to fruition.

Ahead of Tuesday’s makeshift series finale, Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney maintains to TVLine that there is indeed “a universal want and desire” to bring closure to the Lyon family after the coronavirus crisis ends. (As we previously reported, production on the Fox drama’s sixth and final season ground to a halt last month while the show was shooting Episode 19 of its 20-episode order. Consequently, Episode 18 — airing tomorrow night— will now serve as the show’s swan song.)

“Everyone wants to send the series off [properly],” Mahoney maintains. “I can’t guarantee it will happen, but we’re hopeful. And if we don’t actually get a chance to shoot the series finale, I think we’ll find some creative way to get [the information] out there, whether it’s by just releasing the script or finding another way to satisfy fans.”

The EP acknowledges that the prospect of restarting production on Empire post-COVID-19 is not without its hurdles. “We don’t know what the costs will be in terms of keeping our sets,” he explains. “And then the question becomes who from the cast will be available at that point.”

In the meantime, Mahoney says he strived to bring a sense of resolution to the show’s six-year run by incorporating scenes from the penultimate Episode 19 into 18 (aka the ersatz finale that airs tomorrow). “The question [became], ‘Can I craft [an ending] that’s going to be satisfying based on [the footage that] what we had, which was all of Episode 18 and half of 19,” he says. “And, luckily, [there are scenes] we had shot in 19… that were reflective of the spirit that we wanted to end the series with [in the original finale].”

Outlander Recap: Shot in the Rear https://briefnews.eu/outlander-recap-shot-in-the-rear/ https://briefnews.eu/outlander-recap-shot-in-the-rear/#respond Mon, 16 Mar 2020 01:51:22 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/outlander-recap-shot-in-the-rear/ Cool job with the penicillin, Claire. Now can we get you started on a COVID-19 vaccine?

This week’s Outlander covers the section of Diana Gabaldon’s The Fiery Cross in which Claire first cultivates the medicine that infinitely improves the health and safety of everyone within her sphere of influence. Meanwhile, in the present-day real world, many of us are choosing to maintain distance from our loved ones in an attempt to slow the infection rate of a virus that’s wreaking havoc on a large part of the world. Join me, won’t you, in a moment of extreme irony?

Not gonna lie: I’m not feeling particularly jokey or Sassenachy this week. But we got through “To Ransom a Man’s Soul” together, and we’ll get through this, too. Read on for the highlights of “Perpetual Adoration.”

NOT THAT MR. MENZIES | Throughout the hour, we get a lot of flashbacks to 1960s Claire. It reminds me how much I really liked this look — especially this hair — on Caitriona Balfe. Claire is praying, alone, in a church while her voiceover talks about how many times in her life she’s placed her hope in a being she can’t see. “Time is a lot of the things people say God is,” the voiceover later continues as we flit through flashbacks from the previous four seasons. “If time is akin to anything like God, I suppose memory must be the Devil.”

Wow, Claire, dark. But we eventually learn that she’s thinking a lot about a surgical patient she had in Boston. His name was Graham Menzies, he was from Scotland and he was scheduled to have a routine gallbladder surgery… except he was allergic to the penicillin Claire prescribed him ahead of the procedure, and he died. When she found out, she unleashed on the poor nurse that delivered the news, then took a leave of absence from the hospital and planned the trip to London with Bree that eventually turned into the trip to Rev. Wakefield’s funeral. (Side note: In the book, Menzies is a cancer patient whose life is dwindling after several surgeries, and Claire helps him end his life, which leads to a hullabaloo at the hospital and her being promoted/removed from doing actual doctoring, which then leads to her leave of absence and trip. #TheMoreYouKnow)

The Boston flashbacks appear in snatches, and out of order, but eventually we come back to the beginning and learn that Claire is at the Catholic church in honor of Graham, who had a shift of perpetual adoration in memory of his dead wife. The priest starts talking to Claire about the love between married people, and all of that eventually plays into her decision to go back to the past.

TWO BROTHERS, NO TONSILS | On Fraser’s Ridge, Claire is thinking a lot about her last Boston patient, mainly because that man was allergic to penicillin but a test for that didn’t indicate it — and now Claire is going to use her newly cultivated medicine on Josiah and Kezzie. She’s nervous, naturally. “Everything you do as a doctor involves risk,” she tells Marsali. But it looks like the boys will be OK, so she — with the help of Mr. Bug, Lizzie and Marsali — goes about dosing Kezzie and removing his gross, infected tonsil. By Outlander standards, the procedure isn’t very bloody and doesn’t make me gag: Is this show getting soft in its old age? When Kezzie is done, they all get to work on his twin brother.

BONNET’S SPECTRE LOOMS | We meet up with Roger and Bree in bed, where they’ve just had a naked, sweaty celebration of his return to the ridge. “Did you… enjoy yourself?” he asks her, and Roger my dude, WHY CAN’T YOU TELL BY NOW?! “Aye, captain,” she says. (I want to hope she’s telling the truth, but I’m guessing his rifle isn’t the only trigger he doesn’t know how to work. Just a hunch.) They chat a bit about how Roger is generally useless except for lecturing at students, and then he shuts down her support for his idea of a local school. Nice.

Later, while trying to quiet a fussy Jemmy, Roger accidentally knocks over Bree’s jewelry box. He finds the diamond that Bonnet gave her in the jail and recognizes it from when he and the crooked sea captain were playing cards on the boat one night. Roger confronts his wife and she confesses that she accepted it after she told Bonnet that Jeremiah was his child. She calls it Jemmy’s “ticket home,” but Roger — who didn’t even know that Bree had spoken to her rapist, much less told him he had a son — is incredibly angry. He points out that she never told him Jem was his. “I didn’t think I needed to,” she says, her voice growing hard. But when Roger presses her for what she truly believes about her son’s paternity, her face falls and her answer is clear: Roger leaves, and she cries.

Rog spends the night outside, where Claire runs into him while foraging the next morning. She quickly susses out that he did the 18th-century equivalent of sleeping on the couch, then winds up giving him a little al fresco marriage counseling. When asked, she admits that she doesn’t regret lying to Brianna about her true parentage for so long. “Sometimes,” she observes, “the truth really does hurt.” Then she gently warns him not to be careless with the time he and Bree have together.

So he returns home with some peace-making mushrooms (she’d been looking for them earlier in the episode), but he quickly realizes there’s something else she hasn’t told him. “Stephen Bonnet is still alive, and he haunts me, Roger. I see him everywhere,” she says, adding the bit about Mrs. Bug and the Irishman in town who gave Jeremiah a coin. Roger quickly and uncharacteristically does the right thing. “He doesn’t matter,” he reassures her, gathering her to him and kissing her face. “Because as soon as we know if Jemmy can travel, we’ll use Bonnet’s gem to leave.” You all saw Brianna’s face after he said that, right? Right. Moving on!

Outlander Recap Season 5 Episode 5IT’S A HARD KNOX LIFE FOR US | Jamie, Fergus and the militia catch up with Lt. Knox and the Redcoats, and Col. Fraser is overjoyed to learn that Gov. Tryon is planning to ease tensions by pardon all of the Regulators. But his elation comes to a skidding stop when he realizes that the hunt for Murtagh is still on: The Crown wants to take down the movement’s ringleader as an example to the rest. Knox giddily tells Jamie that he’s waiting on some mail from Scotland that could help their hunt: the prisoner list from Ardsmuir. Knox reasons that if there are other Ardsmuir men in the colonies, they could be hiding their former cellmate. “Those who follow the righteous shall have their reward,” Knox intones — and watch out, guy: You know what happened to the last guy who said that, right?

Jamie says nothing during all of this, but he does bring his militia roster to Knox’s room the night before he and the disbanded band of brothers are due to return home. Knox asks him to stay for a game of chess, and before you can say “Queen to Rook 4,” the lieutenant is pouring out his soul to JAMMF. “Had we gone to battle, there’s no man I’d have rather had by my side,” he says, bringing to two the total number of British dudes who have sweet-talked Jamie over a chessboard.

Outlander Recap Season 5 Episode 5Just then, Knox’s Ardsmuir list arrives. And before he can read it, Jamie confesses that his name will be on there. Knox soon sees that Murtagh’s is, as well… and that the outlaw’s true last name is Fraser. “My godfather,” Jamie says quietly. “Fitzgibbons is his middle name.” The penny drops, and Knox realizes that his beloved Scot has been working against him this whole time. He calls Jamie a traitor and pulls his knife, announcing his intention to call for Big Red’s arrest. Jamie points out that his first oath was to his family… and then Jamie knocks Knox’s head against the wall and strangles him. Then he burns the Ardsmuir manifest and closes the fireplace flue so that the smoke backs up into the room. Jamie sneaks out a window and is almost given up by a loudly mewling kitten who’s nosing around where he hides as he watches the Redcoats fish Knox’s body out of his room. But then Jamie and Fergus meet up and sneak off into the night while the British army is otherwise occupied.

HELLO, ADSO! | Jamie arrives home soon after, warning Claire not to hug him too tightly when she welcomes him back. Off her quizzical look, he opens his coat and pulls out the kitten. His name is Adso, Jamie announces, after a wee cheetie Jamie’s mom had when he was a child. Then they talk about how the universe sets you on a certain path sometimes, and an oblivious Adso laps his cream in the corner.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments!

NBC’s Manifest took flight again this Monday night, revealing the outcome of Jared and Zeke’s “gun fight” before dropping a couple of bombshells on Ben.

MAN ON THE RUN | Season 1 left off with Jared lunging at a gun-waving Zeke, and the gents fighting over the firearm before a shot rang out. It turns out that Michaela, who was arriving on the scene at the time, took the wayward bullet. As she bled on the floor after, she urged trigger man Zeke to “run,” which he did. It was touch-and-go for Michaela once at the hospital, but she pulled through surgery — after which, Saanvi told Jared that he was not welcome to see the patient. Instead, Mick is visited by Ben, who looped his sis in on the “death date” situation, and Cal, who like his aunt shared a new “nightmare” in which 828 was in a nosedive. Seated beside Mick during that unreal crisis, Cal urged her to “save the passengers.” But what does that mean?

BABY TALK | Flash forward two months and Ben has been trying to “save the passengers” by scoping out their homes and possible threats (such as a mysterious unmarked van). After checking in with Saanvi, Ben takes Grace for her 14-week sonogram, during which he discovers that she was pregnant while he was “away,” but miscarried. (With Ben and Cal “dead,” she had holes in her life, Grace explained, and Danny always wanted kids….) Speaking of Danny, there is some debate about whether to tell him about Grace’s new pregnancy (for which he could be responsible), but she and Ben agree to hold off for six months or so. Back at the house, they share their news with a joyous Mick, Olive and the rest. Later, though, Grace and Olive bump into Danny, and Grace is conspicuously mum about her pregnancy. Having realized that Danny could be the father, Olive storms off, angry that nothing in their lives is simple anymore.

Manifest Season 2, Episode 1WHAT’S SHAKING? | Returning to the cop shop early, Michaela is met with some side-eye (…and loads more to come next week) by her new boss, Captain Bowers, when she asks that the hunt for Zeke be called off. When Mick gives Jared a very cold shoulder, she explains to her ex that she blames his obsession with Zeke for her getting shot. She then notices two names on the Missing Persons board, Anton and Trina Vasik, that match passengers from Ben’s research — at which point both she and Cal, who is back home, start shaking. Conferring with Ben, and then visiting the Vasik kids who are being watched over by a neighbor lady, the Stones realize that Anton and Trina up and vanished a few nights ago. The neighbor shows Ben and Mick the cellar where the Vasiks had papered the walls with Bible verses, including one about being “cast into the lake of fire.”

SAANVI OVERSHARES | Dr. Ragier (aka The Major) suggests to Saanvi that she has special feelings for Ben, given that all they have been through — a fact that Saanvi unconvincingly disputes. In a later session, Dr. Ragier attests that Saanvi should no longer pay, out of pocket, for her services if she is going to hold back on all of her stressors. Saanvi agrees to go, but turns heel at the doorway to share, “Something happened to us on that plane….”

FAUX, CANADA | Though Zeke seemingly sent Mick a postcard from Canada, Cal (thanks to a new drawing) finds him camped out in his mother’s apartment, sporting a full ol’ beard. Cal insists that Zeke and Mick belong together, but Zeke argues that Mick nearly died because of him. Cal then explains the “death dates,” and how Zeke might not have much time. Later, Michaela bumps into a cleaned-up Zeke, who has called the cops on himself and is ready to surrender, despite her protests. “I wish I met you some other way, some other time,” Zeke says. Michaela grabs him, triggering another shaky calling in which she glimpses a commuter bridge and a yellow Pontiac. That leads her and Ben to an entirely fictional overlook by the George Washington Bridge, where the Vasiks are preparing to drive their car off the cliff.

Ben explains to an anxious Anton that many 828ers are having “callings,” and that they aren’t bad things. Anton hits the gas, but stops short when Mick steps in front of him. Standing there, Mick looks down and notices that a different car had already slid down the cliffside. Inside that car is a family, and the father had fallen asleep at the wheel. The Vasiks’ “calling” saved those people, Ben explains. Arriving on the scene, Captain Bowers is curious about Michaela’s latest “tip,” and her claim that Zeke helped solve this missing persons case.

ALIVE AND KICKING | That night, Ben is taking out the trash when he spies the same white van that was parked outside the Vasik home. Hollering at the vehicles’ unseen inhabitants, Ben starts rapping on the window when someone grabs-and-bags him from behind, then lobs him into the back. When the hood is later lifted and Ben is uncuffed, he is shocked to see that he is sitting across from… Vance! “You’re not the only one who can come back from the dead,” grins the old frenemy.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tuesday’s harrowing penultimate Season 4 episode of Animal Kingdom. Proceed at your own peril.

We kinda knew that Animal Kingdom’s baddest of badasses wasn’t going to wither away in a hospital bed as she feared. But I don’t think any of us could have guessed that Smurf’s last stand would go down the horrifying way that it did in “Ghosts.” Read on, and we’ll go over all the gory details of the tremendous John Wells-written and -directed episode.

‘A DEAL’S A DEAL’ | In the 1970s, Janine, still reeling from Colin’s demise, thought she’d struck a deal with Jed to buy a car for $ 500 so that she could hit the road. Only, after he’d tuned up the vehicle, the sleazebag decided that he wanted “some fun” with her instead of the money. When she pointed out the obvious — that she was eight freakin’ months pregnant — he replied, “You still got a mouth.” Charming, no? In the end, Janine wound up grabbing him by the balls, whacking him with a shovel and taking off on foot — only to have him tackle her, sending her into premature labor with Julia and Pope, who we learned had been born with teeth. (This, according to Laney, meant that he’d be a warrior.)

animal-kingdom-recap-season-4-episode-12-ghostsIn the present, as Smurf made her way home after a night of partying, Angela continued to try to set herself up as a replacement mother figure by baking a coffee cake. Yeah, yeah, but how are your pies, Ang? Across town, Deran informed Adrian that their destination was Indonesia. “Great surfing, no extradition treaty.” Once Smurf made it back to Casa Cody, she got dressed for the heist, which mainly involved putting on enough gold jewelry to rival Mr. T’s collection, and flushed all of her pills. Wait, no — most of her pills. She decided to leave out a bunch of oxy to tempt Angela (who nearly drowned in the tub after taking the bait). Smurf also threw out her would-be replacement’s coffee cake and, being the fastidious housekeeper that she is, washed the pan.

animal-kingdom-recap-season-4-episode-12-ghosts‘SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE’ | Riding with J to Jed’s compound, Smurf first made small talk about whether Craig would be a good dad. Maybe if he got a book on the subject. After all, “they’ve got a book for everything nowadays.” Then she revealed what had to have been the real reason that she wanted to travel with J: to fill him in on the threat that Adrian posed. “J, I don’t think Deran is strong enough to handle this,” she purred. “Do you, baby?” Once the group arrived at the compound, J, Deran and Craig went to work breaking into the bunker while Smurf and Pope went to the house to keep Jed and his sons occupied. Of course, Smurf also made time to visit Colin’s grave and, for what we thought had to be the last time (but wasn’t yet), mess with Pope’s head. First, she told him they were standing at his father’s grave, then she introduced Jed and Odin as his uncle and cousin.

animal-kingdom-recap-season-4-episode-12-ghostsOnce J texted his grandmother that the job was done, she got down to her own personal business: She asked to buy some guns so that Jed would discover that his bunker had been chained from the inside. She then murdered him and got into a shootout with not only Odin but his brothers, who’d picked that unfortunate moment to return from fence-mending. As shot after shot was fired, Smurf was hit in the leg. But that didn’t piss her off nearly as much as Pope carrying her to safety. “You son of a bitch!” she screamed at him. He’d thwarted her plan to die in the same spot as Colin. When the two of them met up outside the compound with J, Craig and Deran, Smurf took Deran’s gun from him and ordered Craig to give his to Pope. “Shoot me, Andrew,” she demanded, seizing one last opportunity to warp his mind. “Don’t you get it? I’m already dead.” When he hesitated, she actually fired at him, grazing his ear. “Shoot me, you goddamn p—y!” she raged. Finally, J did what Pope couldn’t, and the wicked witch was dead.

animal-kingdom-recap-season-4-episode-12-ghosts‘WE’RE GETTING THE HELL OUTTA HERE’ | As the episode drew to a close and we began to catch our breath, the boys laid out Smurf’s body in the garage at Casa Cody. Making a fine case for why he should become the gang’s leader, J concerned himself with the truck that Pope had left behind at the compound and instructed Deran to call in his doctor so that Smurf’s death certificate wouldn’t alert the cops to the fact that she had been shot in the head. Later, Renn comforted Craig, Deran told Adrian they were never coming back to Oceanside, Angela kissed up to J anew, and Pope… our poor, broken Pope sweetly kissed his mother’s cold forehead. We’re entering uncharted territory, folks. It’s the end of an era, and what the next one will look like, I can only imagine. What did you think of Smurf’s last stand — and that performance by Ellen Barkin? The word “Da-amn!” comes to mind, no? Also, check out writer/director John Wells’ take on the episode here.

Double Shot at Love Finale: Were You Surprised by That Last-Minute Twist? https://briefnews.eu/double-shot-at-love-finale-were-you-surprised-by-that-last-minute-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/double-shot-at-love-finale-were-you-surprised-by-that-last-minute-twist/#respond Fri, 28 Jun 2019 11:46:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/double-shot-at-love-finale-were-you-surprised-by-that-last-minute-twist/

While you were watching the Democratic Presidential Debates on Thursday, deciding which candidate you trust with the future of our country, the boys of MTV’s Double Shot at Love faced an equally important decision. After 12 episodes of intense GTL — in this case, the “T” stands for “tears” — DJ Pauly D and Vinny Guadagnino each had to pick one lucky(?) lady to date exclusively.

Atop the final hour, Nikki Hall and Derynn Paige remained in the running for Pauly’s heart (which probably has a tiny six pack of its own), while Elle Wilson and Alysse Joyner were both hoping to avoid Vinny’s last cab ride. And just when the foursome thought it had already faced its toughest critics, along came the guys’ moms (with Vinny’s legendary Uncle Nino in tow!) to pass judgment on their potential daughters-in-law.

“If our moms find out some major red flags here, that’s a big deal, and that’s going to influence my decision,” Pauly explained. But rather than letting this rattle her, as most of the women did, Derynn chose to focus her energy on a slightly more affable target. “I’m definitely Uncle Nino’s type,” she said with an uncomfortable amount of confidence. “If he’s here, I’ve got this in the bag.” (Shocker: Derynn was, in fact, picked out by Uncle Nino as the one lady he might actually have a shot with.)

The family members’ visit was, as expected, a total disaster — from the moms judging Elle for wearing white in the kitchen (the unpardonable sin!) to Uncle Nino asking the women whether Pauly or Vinny “tastes better.” Frankly, we’re not sure it cleared anything up. Either way, time was up, and decisions had to be made.

Unlike Pauly, who seems ready to find a stepmother for his child, Vinny took a surprisingly level-headed approach to the final elimination: “I’m a realist. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m in love. That should mean a lot to you. But I will say that leaving this house we’ll be in a crazy, expedited starting point to find love.”

Vinny was the first to announce his choice, sending Elle home in favor of Alysse. “I’m, like, in shock,” Elle said. “I swear. It’s weird. I thought he was joking at first. It was just… weird. Like, what just happened? I’m definitely heartbroken. I thought we had an effortless connection. We could have had a great thing.”

Of course, Elle was hardly the only contestant whose evening took an unexpected turn. Next, Pauly blindsided Derynn by choosing Nikki, prompting this instantly classic response: “I’m so much hotter than her and nicer than her. Does any of this make sense to anyone?” (Keep an eye out for that gem in TVLine’s Quotes of the Week on Sunday.)

But Nikki’s victory was short-lived, as Pauly explained that her feelings for him were a little too intense. And in his defense, she recently said, “After tonight, no one can tell me how to be with him, or not to kiss him. Like, I could do whatever the f–k I want with him, because he’d be mine.” (There’s that red flag he was worried about!)

“The feelings you carry, that didn’t happen for me,” Pauly told Nikki. “As much as it kills me to say this, I’m rolling solo for now.” In other words, he pulled a reversal of what Kristy Morgan did to Tila Tequila during A Shot at Love II — a twist that still irks us 12 years later.

OK, let’s talk: Do you think Vinny and Alysse have a bright future ahead of them? Were you surprised by Pauly’s decision to, ahem, roll solo? And would you watch a second season that continues Pauly’s journey to romance? Drop a comment with all of your thoughts below.

  • New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis announced his desire to be traded on Monday.
  • Just hours after the news became public, the Pelicans posted a picture to Instagram celebrating “True Teammates,” which some saw as a shot at Davis.
  • While it’s possible the timing of the post was a coincidence, the awkward situation is a good illustration of the tension that now exists between the franchise and its star player.

Anthony Davis is set for an awkward few days with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The perennial All-Star told his team on Monday that he wanted to be traded, and his agent didn’t mince words to express his desires.
