For instance, Chrome widgets include shortcuts to the browser’s incognito mode and voice search functionality. There’s even a separate widget for Chrome’s dinosaur game in case you find yourself without an internet connection and need something to pass the time.

The best part is that you won’t need to go out of your way to download anything. “Once our widgets are available, just press and hold down your Lock Screen to start customizing,” says Google. You can expect them to arrive in the “coming weeks,” according to the company.

Two acronyms are sure to grab headlines in 2018: AI and GDPR.

Gartner called AI the most disruptive technology of the next 10 years. The technology will certainly continue to generate increased attention about its advances and new applications in 2018.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) — a set of stringent European Union rules governing the way companies collect, manage, and use information on EU citizens — was described as a top priority by 92 percent of corporate leaders who responded to a recent survey.

Which begs the question: Will these two big trends merge? Can AI help organizations meet the GDPR’s May 25th, 2018 compliance deadline and avoid penalties? (If an organization doesn’t meet this deadline, it is subject to fines of up to 4 percent of its annual worldwide revenue or €20 million — whichever is greater.)

After all, AI is all about handling and deriving insights from vast amounts of data, and GDPR demands that organizations pore through their databases for rafts of personal information that falls under GDPR’s purview.

The answer: AI probably won’t be a magic bullet as companies scramble to address the regulation’s provisions.

For one thing, AI, despite all its promise, has not yet reached the adoption tipping point necessary to make it much of a factor in the GDPR effort.

“Total investment (internal and external) in AI reached somewhere in the range of $ 26 billion to $ 39 billion in 2016, with external investment tripling since 2013,” a McKinsey report says. “Despite this level of investment, however, AI adoption is in its infancy, with just 20 percent of our survey respondents using one or more AI technologies at scale or in a core part of their business, and only half of those using three or more.”

For another thing, it’s questionable to what extent an AI can tackle the unique GDPR requirements, most of which simply don’t lend well to automation.

GDPR aims to give EU citizens greater control over their personal data and hold companies accountable on matters such as data use consent, data anonymization, breach notification, cross-border data transfer, and appointment of data protection officers.

For example, organizations will have to honor individuals’ “right to be forgotten” — fulfilling requests to delete information on them and providing proof it was done. They must obtain explicit permission to gather data, rather than implied. And they are required to allow people to see their own data in a commonly readable format.

GDPR covers any information that can be used to directly or indirectly identify an individual – such as names, photos, email addresses, financial details, posts on social networking sites, medical information, or a computer IP address – no matter when it was collected.

In fact, there are questions about whether the EU will catch AI itself in its legal crosshairs because GDPR states that European citizens have a right to explanation when an automated decision is made about them.

The system will undoubtedly work those issues out, but, in the meantime, companies should roll up their sleeves with a thorough, systematic approach to prepare for the May 25th deadline rather than look to AI as a panacea. That multi-step strategy should include:

Data. A comprehensive plan to document and categorize the personal data an organization has, where it came from, and who it is shared with.

Privacy notices. A review of privacy notices to align with new GDPR requirements.

Individuals’ rights. People have enhanced rights, such as the right to be forgotten, and new rights, such as data portability. This demands a check of procedures, processes, and data formats to ensure the new terms can be met.

A legal basis for processing personal data. Companies will need to document the legal basis for processing personal data, in privacy notices and other places.

Consent. Companies should review how they obtain and record consent as they will be required to document it. Consent must be a positive indication; it cannot be inferred. An audit trail is necessary.

Children. There will be new safeguards for children’s data. Companies will need to establish systems to verify individuals’ ages and gather parental or guardian consent for the data processing activity.

Data breaches. New breach notification rules and new fines will affect many organizations, raising the importance of the need to understand how to detect, report, and investigate personal data breaches.

Privacy by design. A privacy by design and data minimization approach will become an express legal requirement. It’s important for organizations to plan how they will meet the new terms now.

Data protection officers. Organizations may need to designate a data protection officer. They should figure out who will take responsibility for compliance and how they will position the role.

There are many issues organizations need to consider as they ensure GDPR compliance. For now, only a human can do the heavy lifting in this process, not artificial intelligence.

From TRX to calisthenics, and strongman training to pilates, knowing which exercises to do can be as much of a challenge as motivating yourself to hit the gym.

But an expert says there’s no need to over-complicate things.

Indeed, Lawrence Hannah – personal trainer and founder of newly-launched back-to-basics functional training studio Metabolic London (www.metaboliclondon.com) – believes that it’s possible to remain in the best shape of your life with just five simple moves.

“I am a massive fan of ‘keep it simple’. Complicated, specialist workouts have their place, but you can target the entire body in just a small number of exercises,” he said.

That’s not to say you won’t work as hard – just more effectively.

He explained: “The reason why these movements are so great is that they recruit so many muscles, utilise multiple joints and highly activate the nervous system. 

“Known as compound exercises, these bigger movements target the use of the main muscle groups performing the movement, and also recruit a bunch of supporting muscles. This means the body is getting a greater workout.

What’s more, compound movements have the potential to burn more fat.

He added: “With compound movements we are creating a greater hormonal response when we train. So it follows: the bigger the movement, the bigger the hormonal response, the bigger the change.”

These are the five exercises with which he believes you can’t go wrong.

1. Squat

With your back straight and feet shoulder-width apart, sit down into your heels until hips are lower than your knees. Then drive up through your heels to standing.

2. Deadlift

With weight on one leg, hinge forward from the hips with your back straight. Kick back with the opposite leg that’s in the air.

Then reverse motion and thrust the hips forward back to the starting position.

3. Push-up

Beginning in a high plank position with arms straight and hands beneath shoulders, slowly lower your hips and shoulders towards the floor by bending your arms. Next, drive up through the shoulders, arm and chest back to the start position.

4. Pull-up

Gripping an overhead bar with arms extended, lean back slightly and pull your body in a rowing motion upwards until your hands hit your armpits.

5. Dip

Using a gym bench or chair, place your hands behind you on the edge of it. Your knees are bent in front of you with feet flat on the ground.

By bending the elbows, slowly lower your butt cheeks to the floor. Then drive up through the arms back to the starting position.

But remember…

“The body is very, very clever and will get used to the same workout performed over and over again,” he explained.

“To keep it guessing, change the exercises slightly by increasing the weights, increasing the reps, performing the movement for longer, or even holding it in a static position.”

It takes millions of years for natural processes to convert plants into gasoline, but researchers at Ghent University have figured out how to do it much faster. By pre-treating grass to make it break down quicker, and then adding Clostridium bacteria similar to that found in your gut, they produced decane, one of the main ingredients of gasoline and jet fuel. While decane is a polluting fuel, commercial jets will need it for at least the next few decades, and the researchers believe their process is efficient enough to make it commercially feasible.

For their system to work, the scientists first treated the grass with a compound that broke it down and made it easier for bacteria to digest. They then treated it with an enriched Clostridium bacteria from the family that makes up the good bacteria in your gut, rather than the one that kills you. Fermentation much like that used for beer produced lactic acid and its derivatives, and further treatment yielded caproic acids. With further processing, that was converted into decane, a primary ingredient of gasoline and jet fuel.

As mentioned, decane and similar products aren’t very clean fuels (they produce CO2 when burned), but they still have a much higher energy density than, say, lithium batteries. As such, be the main fuel used in aviation for the foreseeable future, as jet planes need to be relatively light to get aloft.

For now, the process can only yield a few drops of biofuel, but the researchers claim the process is already relatively efficient, and with some more work, could possibly be made commercially feasible. Unlike corn, grass grows pretty much anywhere, so the ability to convert it into fuel on the cheap would be a huge step.
