Within seconds, the espresso machine is making its deafening but oh-so-satisfying whir — loud enough to make a nearby student glance up over his MacBook Air. A tourist is reading his Lonely Planet guidebook, and a besuited man with a briefcase ducks in for an air-conditioned break. Unremarkable, right?

Wrong. I’m somewhere where this is no mindless everyday experience but a genuine symbol of economic transformation. Here in Kyrgyzstan, the poorest of all post-Soviet republics, the international-style coffee shop is the community’s chosen measure of progress — and a metric by which Kyrgyzstan has progressed a hell of a lot. Until 2012, there was no Western-style “coffee shop” to be found here (or Western-style anything, really); now, there are more than 40. They’re on “almost every street in the city,” says Aziza Ishmakhametova, a program manager at the Central Asia Free Market Institute. “They have changed our lifestyles.” You’d be forgiven for thinking that Bishkek is starting to turn a bit Brooklyn or Shoreditch, but the rise of the independent coffee shop is also a test case for just how open the economy truly is against the forces of corruption and poor governance that continue to plague the post-Soviet world.

Coffeeshop017

“Everyone wants to open a coffee shop now,” says Chihoon Jeong, the owner of Chicken Star, a Korean chicken restaurant turned specialty coffee shop that opened in 2015. Anywhere else in the world, serving Korean chicken alongside artisanal hand-drip coffee would be a little, erm, incongruent, he admits, but Bishkek embraces its newfound globalism in a clumsy fashion — the sushi restaurants serve pizza, and the pizzerias serve sushi. And the trendy power of coffee is not lost on any of them: “Now, we have shisha places, pizza places, steak places that call themselves a coffee shop,” says Stepan Golovash, founder of Qcoffee, with a sigh.

When people have discretionary money, they’re spending it in the coffee shops.

Richard Pomfret, economist, University of Adelaide

They may be upstarts, but the restaurants doubling up as coffee shops, like the independent cafés, are signs of the country’s churn.

After decades of economic stagnation, “incomes are going up now, and when people have discretionary money, they’re spending it in the coffee shops,” says Richard Pomfret, professor of international economics at the University of Adelaide. Chicken Star targets local “young professionals and trendy youth,” says the outlet’s marketing specialist Anara Selpieva — a generation that doesn’t remember life as part of the Soviet Union and is increasingly outward-looking. Though the clientele at each of these establishments initially pulled heavily from the expat and tourist communities, about half of customers in each are now locals, say multiple coffee shop owners, as the Land of Tea slowly gets accustomed to the taste of a cuppa joe.

Brad Brenneman, a New Zealander, is often credited with kickstarting the Kyrgyz coffee revolution. He opened the first Sierra Coffee shop next to the Russian Embassy in 2012, two years after a revolution that ousted then–President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and his corrupt family. Since then, Sierra Coffee has opened eight more outlets in Bishkek, though four of those have closed as Brenneman learned the intricacies of the Bishkek retail market the hard way — everything from stingy landlords to unruly neighbors. Eyeing the success of Sierra, a competing chain called Coffeeman (since rebranded as Adriano Coffee) opened up multiple locations a few months later, run by the Shin family, a mega-wealthy Korean-Kyrgyz family that has long been influential in the country’s economy, mainly in the ice cream and frozen goods sector.

Coffeeshop035

The owner spent “three months studying our business, and then suddenly started opening coffee shops,” claims Brenneman. “We’re a startup that did well; Adriano is [part of] a massive Korean conglomerate business empire.” There are now nine Adriano coffee shops across the capital, according to its website (representatives from Adriano Coffee did not respond to OZY’s request for comment). Meanwhile, Sierra is now also roasting coffee in China and hoping to expand elsewhere in Central Asia.

Coffeeshop

It’s not just competition from established oligarchs that threatens the new breed of coffee entrepreneurs. Though corruption today is nothing compared to the rackets and seizures that former president Bakiyev’s son infamously used to mastermind, the culture of commerce is still hard to change. Inspectors often come in unannounced for on-the-spot, unofficial sanitary checks, fire checks or tax inspections, often with no guise of fairness, say several business leaders. “I wouldn’t call them problems, I’d call them issues,” says Golovash. “Yes, we’ve had issues.” Though Qcoffee, which also operates a second outlet called Craft Coffee, outsources all of its books to avoid the pitfalls of an outdated Soviet-era regulatory system, inspectors have been known to come in and watch over cashiers for hours to make sure that receipts are being recorded accurately, says Golovash.

When I visited, employees at a coffee shop that didn’t want to be named had had a surprise visit from a health inspector just the previous month and were forced to pay an on-the-spot bribe of 5,000 soms ($ 75) for failing to have a specific sign hanging in the kitchen. Separately, according to the owner of that outlet (not a Kyrgyz citizen), two years ago it received a surprise visit by immigration officials during a five-day window in which his passport was with the visa office for renewal, and so unable to be checked. As the owner tells the story, they were arrested and given a state lawyer who was negotiating the terms of their deportation from the country, before a friend came and paid a sum that allowed the door to swing open. (Representatives of the Kyrgyz government did not respond to OZY’s requests for comment.)

Coffeeshop013

To be sure, entrepreneurs in many emerging economies face these challenges, and they’re not limited to the restaurant industry — in Kyrgyzstan, it’s the norm to pay a 1,000-som bribe to your examiner before state-run college examinations, one recent graduate tells me. It’s also not only officials who receive bribes, says the coffee shop owner who requested anonymity. “We pay our neighbors [who send in noise complaints]. Everything is like that, you know.” But unlike many other sectors that are still trapped in the past, the coffee shop culture that has taken root in Bishkek is continuing to push the boundaries of change.

It has an unlikely ally. Despite the corruption, the bureaucracy itself is relatively easy to deal with — Kyrgyzstan comes above China, India, Argentina and the Philippines, according to the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking, including an impressive 29th position on the “starting a new business” sub-index — better than the United States. “I don’t understand why people go out of their way to pay bribes” when getting permits and paying taxes in the first place is relatively easy, says Brenneman.

***

Does it ever get worse than small-scale bribes? Rumors abound of activity from the country’s Mafia or regional barons, though most tangible examples of such activity come from before the revolution — a British businessman negotiating a major gold-mining contract was gunned down in the country in 2006, for example. “No one’s ever asked us for protection money, threatened to burn us down,” says Brenneman. “I hear people say those things, but … people operating normal businesses have nothing to fear.”

Coffeeshop040

Still, flying under the radar is the strategy for many of Kyrgyzstan’s new entrepreneurs. “Maybe [the officials] do not know about us,” says Zarema Sultanbekova, who works at Save the Ales, Central Asia’s first craft brewery, run entirely by women who learned to brew beer from YouTube videos. “We don’t open until 5 p.m.,” she says, and most government employees only work during normal hours. Several of the city’s smaller business owners say that they’re happy to keep to one or two outlets to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

And the secret to scale from Sierra, the poster child chain of the coffee shop boom? “I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but I’m sure someone at some point said don’t touch them,” says Brenneman. As we cool off with an iced coffee on a sweltering summer’s day in Bishkek, Brenneman briefly gets up to greet the city’s vice mayor, who just sat down at the table next to us. “When we first opened, we didn’t have any connections,” he says when he returns. “Now, of course, we have connections.”

Venice to ban new takeaway food shops opening in the city – as mass tourism continues https://briefnews.eu/venice-to-ban-new-takeaway-food-shops-opening-in-the-city-as-mass-tourism-continues/ https://briefnews.eu/venice-to-ban-new-takeaway-food-shops-opening-in-the-city-as-mass-tourism-continues/#respond Thu, 10 May 2018 04:09:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/venice-to-ban-new-takeaway-food-shops-opening-in-the-city-as-mass-tourism-continues/

Venice has attempted to tackle the problem of over-tourism with a ban on food takeaway shops from opening for three years.

Many tourists choose to buy from the takeaways as they explore the city and its historical sights.

This, in turn, causes a large amount of litter to plague the small city.

It has also meant huge flocks of pigeons are found throughout the city, ruining it for locals despite there being large fines for anyone spotted feeding them.

The new rules will not affect ice-cream parlours but will include pizza and kebab takeaways.

The new rule was approved by the mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro today.

Calling it an “urban decorum” drive, it hopes to end the rubbish being left on many church and bridge steps.

However it must be approved by the Corriere del Veneto, the Veneto regional government to go ahead, according to ANSAmed newspaper.

The mayor has been attempting to clean up the city for over a year.

According to Corriere newspaper, the mayor said: “Our plan is to prevent the opening of new takeaway businesses and impose new rules on those already operating, so that they are obliged to clean up and collect discarded food containers outside their stores, as well as place rubbish bins outside.”

The new rules will see existing takeaway stores be forced to have toilet facilities and a minimum height and floor space.

It is hoped that the project will inspire other cities in Italy to follow suit to protect some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Florence has already done so, banning new openings within 40 metres of the UNESCO Old Town.

Venice has struggled under the weight of mass tourism due to the sheer volume of visitors who attempt to visit the tiny city every year.

This has resulted in a number of anti-tourism marches and protests, which have also been seen across Europe in Spain and Croatia.

The Italian city has put a number of new rules and changes into place to try and keep the locals happy.

One was to enforce new walking lanes for tourists to allow locals to travel around freely.

Another was adding metal gates to limit the number of tourists visiting at one time, but these were then torn down by some locals.

Visitors could even be capped eventually to say the sinking city.

It is thought that it could cease to exist in the next decade.

Department stores across the country are doubling down on discount options to offset slowing sales, but not Barneys New York.

Established in 1923, Barneys is an exclusive department store known for having some of the sharpest and most expensive clothing items from the world’s top luxury brands.

The retailer rarely releases earnings reports, so it’s hard to tell how the company is doing.

We visited the Barneys Madison Avenue location in New York City to see how the luxury brand is doing.

We visited Barneys NY’s flagship store on a Sunday morning and found all 8 floors strangely quiet.

The women’s section was particularly empty, but offered a very cathartic shopping experience.

Rashad Benton/ Business Insider

Despite the serene atmosphere, a quick look at the registers proved that a lack of customers didn’t necessarily mean poor sales for the luxury retailer.

Marks and Spencer store closures MAPPED: Full list of shops – is YOUR branch affected? https://briefnews.eu/marks-and-spencer-store-closures-mapped-full-list-of-shops-is-your-branch-affected/ https://briefnews.eu/marks-and-spencer-store-closures-mapped-full-list-of-shops-is-your-branch-affected/#respond Wed, 31 Jan 2018 09:57:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/marks-and-spencer-store-closures-mapped-full-list-of-shops-is-your-branch-affected/

Marks and Spencer will close eight stores across the UK in the coming months, it has been revealed.

Commercial Road in Bournemouth is one of the stores set to go, and as well as this, M&S has announced five other stores that will close by the end of April and eight that are proposed for closure.

A spokesperson for the company said the closure is part of M&S’s programme to modernise its UK store estate to better meet the changing needs of customers.

Sacha Berendji, director of Retail at Marks & Spencer, said: “We’re committed to transforming M&S for our customers, colleagues and shareholders. Stores will always be an integral part of our customer experience, alongside M&S.com, but we have to ensure we have the right offer in the right locations.

“We don’t want any colleagues to leave M&S and we will work with each colleague individually on what is best for them as we endeavour to give everyone a role. However, we accept in some cases we may have to consider redundancy.

“We believe these changes are vital for the future of M&S and we will continue to accelerate the programme, taking tough but necessary decisions, as we focus on making M&S special.”

Aaron Spicer, M&S Head of Region for Wessex, said: “Closing our store on Commercial Road is not a decision we have taken lightly. We value the loyalty of our customers in the area and know that some of them will be disappointed by the news.

“I’m pleased our colleagues from the store will be staying with us and we are committed to delivering the very best of M&S for our customers.”

M&S has also reassessed and reduced its Simply Food opening programme, and now only plans to open a total of 36 owned and franchise stores over the next six months. New locations will include Broadstone, Streatham Hill and St Albans.

These stores will sell M&S food and drink and offer Collect in Store for Clothing & Home. The 36 stores will create 1,200 management and customer assistant roles.

This update follows M&S’s announcement in November that it is accelerating its UK store estate plan after the better than expected levels of sales transfer from closures and plans to grow online sales.

M&S currently has 1,025 stores in the UK: 302 Clothing, Home and Food, 684 Food-only and 39 Outlets.

“I do my clean-outs, an archive pile, a back-in-the-wardrobe pile and we take a pile to charity.”

There is an Oxfam store in Highgate High Street and a Sue Ryder in nearby Muswell Hill.

Kate, 44, has become one of the world’s most influential trend- setters since being discovered by a model agency boss at a New York airport 30 years ago.

She is the face of some of the world’s leading fashion brands and every outfit she wears is religiously copied by adoring fans.

The model, who also lives in Highgate, has told of her love of charity shops: “I used to walk around a lot when I was younger, get the Tube, and every time I passed a charity shop I’d go in.”

She said as a teenager she got “all my clothes from Oxfam… bin liners full of clothes for £5”.

She said: “I remember seeing Yves Saint Laurent suits from the 70s for £50. Amazing.”

Rural Kansas Fights to Save Grocery Shops https://briefnews.eu/rural-kansas-fights-to-save-grocery-shops/ https://briefnews.eu/rural-kansas-fights-to-save-grocery-shops/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 06:09:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rural-kansas-fights-to-save-grocery-shops/ Loren Lance was less than impressed when he pulled up to Charlie Brown’s Market, his community grocery store in Mildred, Kansas, to find the doors locked and the shelves bare a few years back. After fretting about it for a few days, the farmer’s wife, Regena, said: “I think we should see about buying it.” So they did just that, reopening it as Mildred Store, much to the community’s delight, two months later. Keeping the 102-year-old shop viable is tricky, Lance admits, but he gets at least one person every day thanking him for being there.

“If I get within 10 miles, I stop by,” a passerby says, strolling past the deli counter. “That’s why it’s here,” Lance nods, “as a community service.” To generate business, Lance hosts live country music nights each month, drawing in 80–160 people for concerts and dances in an adjacent room.

People are getting creative and, I think, realizing that they have to do it themselves.

Yvonne Scott, AmeriCorps VISTA healthy food access coordinator

“When the grocery store in a small town dies, the town dies,” says Yvonne Scott, AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) healthy food access coordinator, noting how the government estimates that 55 million Americans live in food deserts — more than 10 miles away from a grocery store. In Kansas, part of at least a third of the state’s 105 counties suffer from food deserts, affecting roughly 800,000 people, according to David Procter, director of Kansas State University’s Center for Engagement and Community Development, which tracks the closure of small-town groceries and works to equip communities and shop owners with access to savvy business plans, marketing analysis tips and ways to assess their town for store viability. By making Mildred Store known not only for its meaty Charlie Brown sandwich but also as a communal meeting space, Lance is among a cadre of individuals and communities that have begun fighting back to ensure access to healthy food in rural parts of the Wheat State — drawing on civic-minded locals and community-minded organizations to keep their stores alive.

Since 2007, when there were about 213 rural grocery stores in Kansas, says Procter, 45 communities have lost their stores. His work and that of community members and organizations like the Sunflower Foundation, Thrive, Live Well and the Kansas Health Foundation have helped save or restore many stores; today there are an estimated 193 rural shops. “There are lots of innovative things that people are doing to try to either start or sustain their local stores,” he says.

Some communities are pooling resources, making stores “community-owned,” Procter says. In other towns, communities are banding together to turn stores into cooperatives. In Moran, Kansas, for example, the local Stub’s Market is at risk of closing because its owners are looking to retire. Locals, hoping to save it, are working to convert the store into a food cooperative called Marmaton Market. Thrive Allen County asked AmeriCorps VISTA for help, and it sent Scott. So far, almost 100 members have signed on with the $ 100 membership fee. While the membership fees won’t generate operating capital, they do reflect community buy-in, which helps cooperatives secure grants and loans.

Dsc08051

Some communities are striking a private-public partnership to keep their stores alive — meaning local officials declare food access a public good and use public dollars to support the grocery store. This approach is keeping the St. Paul Supermarket in St. Paul, Kansas, afloat. The city council paid to build the market, Procter says. He explains that a couple runs the shop, paying off the debt and drawing a salary, but that the city will always own the enterprise. By ensuring that the store is community-owned, no board or owner can turn around and say, “Your bottom line isn’t working.” In Kiowa, Kansas, the community has created a cooperative, and in Little River, the city government and a community foundation have invested together to ensure their store survives. Tax credits and grants are being used more than ever before. And in Plains, in the southwest part of Kansas, the community is taking the nonprofit route to open a store next year. “People are getting creative and, I think, realizing that they have to do it themselves,” says Scott.

Dsc08017

After the supercenter Walmart moved in on the north side of Iola, most small grocers went out of business — not unusual when shops with bigger overheads like Walmart or Dollar General open nearby. Since then, the townspeople have struggled to get a grocery store back in the center of town that’s walkable for elderly residents. “This was a unique opportunity to bring the county and city together, along with a local group called Iola Industries,” says Bill Maness, Thrive’s economic development program manager, whose organization supported the effort by providing data, like the fact that Iola was losing $ 7 million a year as people left the town to shop elsewhere. Alongside grassroots support, this helped push local authorities to work harder to bring a store to town. The new G&W, a regional grocery chain, is set to open there this month.

Procter isn’t comfortable concluding yet that the reopening or sustainability rate for rural Kansas groceries is better than it was in the early 2000s, but he’s happy his work is beginning to make a difference.

Over at Mildred Store, old-fashioned Christmas candy — a trademark sales item there — fills shelves this time of year. And owner Lance, who’s busy farming and preparing to sell some cattle in the morning, is planning his upcoming music night, where locals dance amid the store’s antiques as he and other musicians take to their fiddles and guitars. There’s no guarantee that Mildred Store will survive. Nor is it assured that the Marmaton Market co-op will take off to replace Stub’s. But, says Carole Hamilton, a cashier at Stub’s who lives right across the street, “I believe people will fight to keep it open.”
