  • Shoppers earning six-figure salaries are turning to dollar stores amid soaring inflation in the US.
  • Economic uncertainty is pushing some Americans to tighten their pursestrings.
  • Dollar General's "core customer" usually earns under $ 40,000 a year, CNN reported.

Shoppers with six-figure salaries are turning to Dollar General stores amid soaring inflation in the US, the discount store's CEO Todd Vasos said this week, per CNN.

Speaking at a retail conference on 7 September, Vasos said Dollar General stores had seen an influx of wealthy customers in recent months, CNN reported.

"The highest trade-in that we've seen and the most robust has actually been between the $ 75,000 and $ 100,000 group, Vasos said.

The company says its "core customers" usually earn under $ 40,000 a year, according to CNN.

Vasos added that some of these higher earners had previously been customers at the height of the pandemic and were now returning, CNN reported.

Dollar stores have generally experienced a revenue boost during times of economic uncertainty. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dollar General's profits soared and even eclipsed its closest competitor, Dollar Tree, in May 2020.

In recent months, Dollar General has seen a revenue spike as higher prices and recession fears across the US have made some Americans more financially conscious.

Dollar General reported revenue of $ 9.4 billion in the second quarter of 2022, a 9% increase from the previous year. 

Representatives for Dollar General did not immediately respond to Insider's request for further comment made outside normal working hours.

In recent years, the company has added more discretionary items, such as home furnishings and party supplies, to lure wealthier shoppers into Dollar General stores.

Other discount stores have seen a similar trend in recent months. Rival dollar store, Dollar Tree, said the majority of the store's new customers had salaries of $ 80,000 a year or more. 

During a recent earnings call, Dollar Tree's CEO, Mike Witynski, said shoppers were "feeling pressured like they never have before," and were "relying on our stores to meet their budget goals."

A farmyard friend looked just like a pig in muck as the Google maps cameras came to call. No ordinary cute pink piglet, this particular fun-loving mammal was in fact a man dressed up in a full head mask with beady eyes and a neon snout. Its appearance was rather realistic, with two ears poking out from the top of his head and a leering look. The cheeky chap had chosen the perfect place to play dress up, standing in front of a variety of meat-themed cushions in his shop in Warsaw, Poland.

Initially, the scenes appeared just like those in a butchers shop, with prime cuts of best pork behind the counter and on the walls.

On closer inspection, they proved to be the homeware accessories, with the store also selling a variety of quirky products.

T-shirts and logo bags lined the walls while the floor featured an eye popping monochrome design.

Not content with his pig posing behind the counter, he then moved to the shop door.

He could be seen clutching the door as he peered the mask around the frame.

It was then his grey hoodie, jeans and trainers came into full view, revealed he had not fully committed to dressing like the animal.

The owner then hot-trotted it to the back of the shop, to take a peek out of the shop’s store room.

It is unclear whether the retailer regularly dresses in character, or it was just a one-off.

Nevertheless, it provided many laughs for those witnessing his antics on the cameras.

A real-life animal who did not fare so well recently was also captured by the team.

A donkey was caught talking a stroll down a dusty desert path, in what must be a daily occurrence. He was seen trotting down the road in the middle of Botswana with no other living presence bar some trees on either side. The grey farmyard mammal looked to be perfectly content in his own company, taking its time to walk down the road.

Yet its tranquil outing was somewhat disrupted by the arrival of the cameras.

It was tracked cantering down the road before falling straight to the floor, in what looked to be an accident.

The donkey was seen lying on the dirt track on his right side, with its tail flailing around.

It is unclear what caused the sudden shift to the floor, though it could be because the arrival of the cameras had spooked it.

Hopefully it made a speedy recovery and its collapse did not prove fatal, though the outcome is as yet unknown.

Bethesda’s latest video game, Fallout 76, launched last month with its share of uneven reviews and responses (including our own), and chief among players’ complaints is that the always-online game is quite buggy.

But to borrow a term that Bethesda itself used to describe the game’s pre-release beta period, Fallout 76 is facing a new “spectacular issue,” albeit one that’s technically outside of the game client. Instead, the issue comes from the game’s equally troubled $ 200 Power Armor edition: buyers of the Power Armor edition who went to Bethesda’s site to resolve the issue were seeing their personally identifying data (PID) leaked to everybody else who was trying to resolve the issue.

This requires backing up for context. Fallout 76 could be pre-ordered in a pricey Power Armor set, complete with a wearable replica helmet and a tote bag. As I pointed out in a November unboxing article, that bag turned out to be “a cheap, flimsy carrying case,” but what I didn’t realize at the time was that Bethesda had originally advertised a higher-quality canvas bag as part of the $ 200 set.

  • Costco membership can go to some people’s heads, according to workers.
  • Business Insider reached out to 49 Costco employees to find out what they wish they could tell shoppers but can’t.
  • Common requests were to control your kids, hang up your phone, and help unload the cart.

Costco membership comes with some obvious perks — namely, access to the retail chain and its food court.

But according to dozens of Costco workers who spoke with Business Insider, being a member doesn’t entitle you to do whatever you want.

While Costco made Glassdoor’s list of best places to work in 2017, employees still had several complaints about shoppers’ rude and inconvenient behavior.

Business Insider spoke to 49 Costco employees about the things they want to tell members but can’t. Some of their responses focused on obvious problems, like members being mean and inconsiderate. But some of the tips were more instructive.

Here’s what they had to say.

Have your membership card ready at the door

“Concentrate on handing me your membership card instead of telling me a story,” a Costco employee in Minnesota told Business Insider. “I can listen to your story as I do whatever you need me to do, but I can’t do that until I have your membership card.”

Don’t trash the warehouse

A Costco employee from Arizona told Business Insider that they wanted to tell members to stop leaving “sample cups all over the floor.” “Don’t be rude,” the employee said. “Clean after yourself.”

Put back items you’ve picked up

“Please put back that item that you just threw there,” a Costco worker from California told Business Insider. “It doesn’t belong there.”

Eight other Costco employees also told Business Insider that they judged members who left products strewn about the store.
