TV Review Grade B+The face of Disney+ is hidden inside a helmet — and the degree to which you can accept The Mandalorian‘s thus-limited expressiveness may dictate your enjoyment of TV’s first live-action Star Wars series.

Having made its debut on Tuesday morning (provided you were able to get the brand-new streaming service up and running) and with new episodes rolling out every Friday (starting Nov. 15), The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order — that is, somewhere between the big screen’s Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Nestled beneath a fine helmet of Baskan steel, Pedro Pascal (Narcos, Game of Thrones) stars as the titular gunslinger, whom we at first meet in the course of saving someone from a shakedown — only to to see him then reveal that carries a “bounty puck” for the blue-skinned being. A thrilling sequence follows in which the Mandalorian must wrest his personal spacecraft from the grip of a mammoth creature, all while making sure his squirrelly bounty doesn’t skedaddle.

From there, we meet Greef Carga (Rocky‘s Carl Weathers), who is sort of the Bellus Haardy to Mando’s Killjoy (in a comparison a dozen or so of you out there might appreciate). Greef cheats “Mando” (a nickname I choose to adopt) a bit on his fee by using Imperial credits, but proceeds to point him to a major, albeit off-book, potential payday, by chasing someone down for Werner Herzog’s enigmatic character. In the course of that assignment, we meet Kuiil (voiced by Nick Nolte), an Ugnaught who warns the bounty hunter that others before him have only perished in their greedy quest, as well as a trigger-happy IG-11 bounty droid (voiced by MCU director Taika Waititi).

The nature of the high-value target sought by the Mandalorian — revealed in quiet but dramatic fashion at episode’s end, and not to be spoiled here — speaks to a larger Star Wars mythology and thus brings with it some questions we can only hope the series will touch upon.

But even before that, the Easter eggs are aplenty, from spit-roasted Kowakian monkey-lizards (a la Jabba the Hut’s chittering sidekick) to one of those eyeball-on-a-stick gatekeeper droids that guarded Jabba’s palace. Yes, this is very much set in the Star Wars universe, but like, say, Solo: A Star Wars Story, it is a different sort of beast, operating far, far away from the trappings of mystical Jedi mumbo-jumbo and what not. So if you’re hungry for that specific flavor of space saga, this may not entirely sate you.

Visually, The Mandalorian looks simply fantastic, filled edge-to-edge with rich set details and cinematic, otherworldly vistas. The visual effects are top-notch for TV, to be sure, though the animated jog of the Blurrgs and the matting of the first landspeeder offered Mando were jusssssst a bit jittery. But for the most part, the creature effects — and there are many — are a far cry above anything else seen on the regular on the small screen.

Ultimately, as noted above, your level of engagement may ride on how vested you can be in a character who will, reportedly, never remove his helmet (unless you count the harrowing flashes from a childhood that haunts him). Left with mostly just his voice to act with, Pascal gives Mando some hints of snarkiness, if not humor; by and large, he comes off as a business-first ballbuster. (And truth be told, no one wants a quippy Mandalorian.) Weathers and Herzog fit comfortably into this world, in their brief intros, and it’d be great to see more of Nolte’s Kuiil. (The characters to be played by Gina Carano, Emily Swallow, Giancarlo Esposito, Ming-Na Wen and Omid Abtahi did not appear in the first, 40-minute episode.)

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: This may not be the exact Star Wars series you’re looking for, but it may be an E-ticket ride, nonetheless.

Emmerdale spoilers: Viewers spot awkward blunder as Max shoots Jessie dingle https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-viewers-spot-awkward-blunder-as-max-shoots-jessie-dingle/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-viewers-spot-awkward-blunder-as-max-shoots-jessie-dingle/#respond Wed, 26 Jun 2019 00:23:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-viewers-spot-awkward-blunder-as-max-shoots-jessie-dingle/

Max (played by Jordan Reece) held Billy Fletcher’s (Jay Kontzle) family hostage in tonight’s instalment of Emmerdale as the gangster attempted to seek his revenge on Billy, but viewers couldn’t help but notice something odd about the situation.

The villain managed to sneak into Billy’s family home and threatened Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), April (Amelia Flanagan), and Jessie Dingle (Sandra Marvin) with a gun after Billy had tried to set Max up.

Billy agreed to take part in a robbery with Max to get him out of his family’s life for good but secretly he planned to never go through with it and intended on telling the police everything.

However, his plan backfired and Billy ended up putting his family’s life in danger as Max decided to take his revenge on those closest to Billy.

But fans were surprised to see the entire family home considering Max had snuck into the house during the middle of the day.

Marlon explained that he had returned home because he had injured himself at a football match but fans wondered why Jessie wasn’t at school.

One tweeted: “Why was Jessie even home? I thought she was a head mistress in a school? #Emmerdale.”

Another remarked: “#Emmerdale For the first time ever, Jessie wishes she went to work.”

“Was Jessie on a teacher training day or something? #Emmerdale,” questioned a third.

Some fans were quick to point out that it seems Jessie rarely attends her place of work and is often seen during the day on the ITV soap.

One added: “If Jessie dies will the kids at her school even notice seeing as she’s never there? #Emmerdale.”

“Jessie has now got more excuses for taking time off school #emmerdale,” joked a second.

Despite threatening Billy’s family with a gun, some viewers were less than convinced by Max’s attempt to come across as a gangster.

One said: “Max is really not the scariest person is he? #Emmerdale,” and another wrote: “Max has to be the least scary gangster in the world! Those faces he’s pulling are hilarious! #Emmerdale.”

A third remarked: “Max isn’t the sharpest pencil in the box is he #emmerdale.”

Elsewhere, Victoria Sugden’s (Isabel Hodgins) baby could be taken by rapist Lee Posner in a savage custody battle.

Victoria was tragically assaulted by Lee after Emmerdale’s Big Night Out and The Woolpack chef made the brave decision to keep her baby.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Rebecca Calden-Storr a Managing Partner and Laura-Faye Trainor a Solicitor at Stowe Family Law about Victoria’s upcoming struggles.

Discussing whether Lee would try and seek custody of the child, they said: “In a real-life scenario it is extremely unlikely that Lee would have contact with the child.

“By virtue of his actions, he is a significant risk to Victoria and the child.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.

IDF soldier shoots 2 neighbors, attacks 3 with ax, after confiscated gun given back by ‘accident’ https://briefnews.eu/idf-soldier-shoots-2-neighbors-attacks-3-with-ax-after-confiscated-gun-given-back-by-accident/ https://briefnews.eu/idf-soldier-shoots-2-neighbors-attacks-3-with-ax-after-confiscated-gun-given-back-by-accident/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 00:28:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/idf-soldier-shoots-2-neighbors-attacks-3-with-ax-after-confiscated-gun-given-back-by-accident/ An Israeli soldier, previously investigated and stripped of his weapon for violent behavior, has shot two people in his hometown and attacked three more with an ax, following a social media brawl over municipal elections.

The IDF soldier, whose name was not released but who was on leave after a previous violent incident, engaged in a fight with his neighbors in Fassouta Arab local council, near the Lebanese border. The argument apparently broke out following a heated social media altercation involving his family and members of the community, about the nationwide Israeli municipal elections that were held Friday.

As the conflict heated up, the soldier grabbed an ax, striking three people. He then shot two men in their 20s before leaving the gun and fleeing the scene. “He walked around town and shot people as though there was nothing that could stop him,” Edgar Dakwar, the chief of Fassuta’s council told Haaretz, noting that local elections had caused a heated atmosphere in the town.

Police who rushed to the scene “confiscated the weapon” and detained the attacker’s mother as well as the suspect’s friend, who according to police was also involved in the fight. The victims were brought to hospital but, according to local media reports, had suffered relatively minor injuries and were expected to recover.

Following a widespread but futile manhunt, the serviceman eventually voluntarily surrendered himself to the police the next morning.

It turned out the suspect’s gun was supposed to have been confiscated after a violent incident two weeks ago, when the soldier used the same weapon to break the windows of two vehicles, Haaretz reports. However, following the initial probe into car break-ins, the soldier was allowed to take his weapon home. Police called that decision an “accident” on Saturday and promised to investigate.

The Israeli army is now investigating the attack, noting that the soldier’s punishment will be handled “according to the results of the probe.” The local council chief, however, is puzzled “how someone who deliberately causes damage and threatens people on Facebook was released from custody” in the first place.

Avengers 4 star says GOODBYE: Fans pay tribute as major MCU icon shoots FINAL scene ever https://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-star-says-goodbye-fans-pay-tribute-as-major-mcu-icon-shoots-final-scene-ever/ https://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-star-says-goodbye-fans-pay-tribute-as-major-mcu-icon-shoots-final-scene-ever/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 18:47:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/avengers-4-star-says-goodbye-fans-pay-tribute-as-major-mcu-icon-shoots-final-scene-ever/

Avengers 4 is currently undergoing the final reshoots in Atlanta. Various stars have been posting messages as they fly in and out celebrating their work on the epic saga.

However, Evans’ emotional Twitter post this evening makes it clear he has finished his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This means no more of his Steve Rogers or Captain America in the upcoming Marvel Phase 4.

Fans have been getting equally emotional at the news and also their fears that he will die in the Infinity War sequel.

READ CHRIS EVANS’ FULL STATEMENT NEXT:

Evans wrote: “Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honour.

“To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

This absolutely sounds like the end. His contract has now officially expired and the actor had always indicated he would bow out gracefully at that time. Fans, of course, have responded with a torrent of tearful messages.

Two competing major theories offer equally emotional endings for the Captain – one where he dies on Vormir and one where he goes back in time to a certain lady waiting in the dancehall.

One theory centres on the Avengers trying to assemble all the Infinity Stones at key moments in the past. Iron Man wodul sacrifice Captain America, who represents the ideals he most loves, to obtain teh Soul Stone.

The other theory offers a more heartwarming tearjerker where the Time Stone or Time Vortex are used to send a weary Captain back to the 1940s to make his date with Peggy.

Fan comments on Evans’ post range from pointing out this seems a spoiler that Captain America is leaving to memes and gifs featuring his BFF Bucky Barnes and even Donna’s grandadd Wilfred from Doctor Who.

Some of the best include:

“Our Captain. Always our Captain.”

“When you were originally cast, I had deep doubts you were right for the part. I was wrong. Since then, you’ve not only risen to the character but exceeded expectations. Congratulations, Chris.”

“Thank you for bringing this character to life and proving you can make a true-blue hero come off as compelling and interesting.”

“Dude you cannot just go and tweet this, you cannot just leave?????”

“Thank you for being our Steve Rogers for all these years. Our star spangled man with a plan, the man who always stood up and never backed down, our Captain America, our Nomad.. Steve Rogers will always be a legend and we have you to thank for that. We will miss you!”

It is clear that Evans has become a huge fan favourite and his interpretation of the iconic role has won over hardcore fans and casual filmgoers.

Marvel Phase 4 has some very large boots to fill…

‘Trigger-happy’ US cop tells suspects he’ll get a ‘ton of money’ if he shoots someone (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/trigger-happy-us-cop-tells-suspects-hell-get-a-ton-of-money-if-he-shoots-someone-video/ https://briefnews.eu/trigger-happy-us-cop-tells-suspects-hell-get-a-ton-of-money-if-he-shoots-someone-video/#respond Sun, 12 Aug 2018 04:41:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trigger-happy-us-cop-tells-suspects-hell-get-a-ton-of-money-if-he-shoots-someone-video/ A Connecticut police officer has been suspended after a video emerged of him warning suspected trespassers not to do anything stupid, because he is “trigger-happy” and will be paid for overtime if someone gets shot.

“If anybody wants to fight or run, I’m a little trigger-happy guys, I’m not gonna lie. And I get paid a ton of money in overtime if I have to shoot somebody. So don’t do anything stupid,” Hartford Police Sergeant Stephen Barone is heard telling a group of young people that he stopped for alleged trespassing on Thursday night.

The three-minute video, which surfaced on Friday, led to Barone’s suspension from the force pending an internal review of his interaction with the public.

“Regardless of the context or the intent, those statements are entirely unacceptable and represent a fundamental disregard for the conduct we expect and the standards we hold ourselves to,” Hartford Police Assistant Chief Rafael Medina said in a statement. “We look at it from the perspective of the person on the other end of the field interview, and to hear those words isn’t just scary, it projects an image of law enforcement officers who take use of force lightly. As I hope you know, we do not take any use of force lightly as a department.”

The 10-year veteran had already been suspended for four days two years ago for his involvement in a car chase incident which ended with him kicking the suspect while he was handcuffed. Despite the episode, Barone was later promoted to sergeant, following a lengthy internal affairs investigation.

Thursday night’s incident began to unfold at around 9:30pm local time, when a group of young people was approached by the officer near an abandoned house that one of the individuals in the group was allegedly considering purchasing. Barone asked the group if any of them had any weapons, drugs or any warrants against them. After searching them and indulging them with the pep talk, he gave all of them tickets for trespassing.

“The behavior in this video is completely unacceptable. It’s inconsistent with the values of our police department and our city, and it is deeply damaging and disappointing,” Mayor Luke Bronin said. “Law enforcement officers have a responsibility to treat the use of force and threats of force seriously at all times.”

  • Amazon says it will not produce its own networking switches, contradicting a recent report.
  • Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy talked it over on the phone directly, says a Cisco spokesperson.
  • Cisco stock shot up about 3% after the denial.

Amazon Web Services, the retailer’s cloud computing business, has officially denied a report that indicated the company was going to produce its own networking equipment that would compete with Cisco.

Cisco shares went up as high as 3.6% in after-hours trading following the news.

Colin Kaepernick’s collusion case against the NFL has reportedly already uncovered evidence that shoots down one of the biggest arguments against him https://briefnews.eu/colin-kaepernicks-collusion-case-against-the-nfl-has-reportedly-already-uncovered-evidence-that-shoots-down-one-of-the-biggest-arguments-against-him/ https://briefnews.eu/colin-kaepernicks-collusion-case-against-the-nfl-has-reportedly-already-uncovered-evidence-that-shoots-down-one-of-the-biggest-arguments-against-him/#respond Mon, 28 May 2018 18:04:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/colin-kaepernicks-collusion-case-against-the-nfl-has-reportedly-already-uncovered-evidence-that-shoots-down-one-of-the-biggest-arguments-against-him/ Colin KaepernickTom Szczerbowski/Getty

  • Colin Kaepernick’s collusion case against the NFL outlines evidence that teams thought he was good enough to be a starting quarterback in the league, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio reported on Monday.
  • While Kaepernick has stayed unsigned since last year, some have argued that it was because he wasn’t a good enough player to warrant a starting job and too style-specific to be a backup.
  • According to the report, the next challenge for Kaepernick’s legal team would be to prove that NFL teams coordinated to not sign Kaepernick once he became a free agent.

Several NFL teams have been deposed in Colin Kaepernick’s collusion grievance against the league, and it has reportedly already uncovered some eyebrow-raising information.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio reported on Monday that the collusion case outlines that when Kaepernick became a free agent in March 2017, several teams viewed him as a starting quarterback.

  • A South Korean news report translated to English quoted a staffer on President Donald Trump’s National Security Council who was said to have mentioned that a limited strike against North Korea “might help in the midterm elections.”
  • The news stoked fears that the US might be more serious about preemptively striking North Korea than previously thought.
  • However, the source of the quote said that the staffer merely said something “to the effect” that a strike might score Trump some political points.

Foreign-policy experts and lawmakers were aghast following a South Korean news report that attributed to a staffer on President Donald Trump’s National Security Council the suggestion that a limited strike against North Korea “might help in the midterm elections.”

The alleged comment, which was sourced from a scathing opinion column published Friday local time in the South Korean newspaper Hankyoreh, intimated that Trump would consider a limited strike against the North Korean regime “as a way out of his domestic political crisis” in midterm elections.
