Jaakko Rissanen scored in the eighth round of a shootout to give Finnish club KalPa Kuopio a 2-1 win over three-time defending champion Canada in the final of the Spengler Cup on Monday.

KalPa goalie Denis Godla led his team to a 3-2 shootout win against Canada netminder Zach Fucale and his squad in Davos, Switzerland.

Rissanen beat Fucale with a high backhand before Godla made a pad save on Canada captain Andrew Ebbett to end it.

The shootout was tied at 2-2 following three shooters each, bringing it to sudden death. Godla — the MVP of the 2015 world junior hockey championship when he lifted Slovakia to a bronze medal — made five straight saves for the win.

Canada fell just shot of matching its run of four consecutive Spengler Cup titles from 1995 to 1998.

Canada outshot KalPa 40-23.

Daniel Winnik opened the scoring for Canada in the third period before Eetu Luostarinen tied it.

It was KalPa's first Spengler Cup title in the history of the annual holiday tournament.

“When you put up your hand and volunteer to take the first penalty, you have to be convincing. You have to go up there and at least make the goalkeeper work hard to make a save,” Schmeichel said of the Russian substitute’s weak, chipped effort that flew straight into the arms of goalkeeper Danijel Subasic. “It was the wrong decision.”

Despite Spain shootout hero Igor Akinfeev saving one penalty and nearly tipping another, Russia, which had equalized late in extra time thanks to Mario Fernandes, lost 3-4 in the penalty series, due Fernandes slicing his effort straight past the post.

“It was a really bad penalty he took,” said Schmeichel, who otherwise praised the naturalized Brazilian-born player. “You have to hit the target.”

Schmeichel said that Russia should be “proud” of their performance, and remember that they themselves inflicted a penalty defeat on Spain in the previous round as they come to terms with their heartbreak.

He also heaped praise on Croatia, who have scrapped past two teams in the knockouts, despite failing to always show the sparkling football expected of them.

“Croatia are a proper team with good players in every position. They have players that will fight to the end, and we’ve seen that today,” said Schmeichel, particularly singling out Subasic, who appeared to have sustained a hamstring injury near the end of normal time, only to make a string of difficult saves in extra time.

Schmeichel now believes that Croatia will overcome England, and if quality of football translates into results, confront Belgium in the World Cup final next Sunday.

  • The United States women’s hockey team beat Canada in the gold medal match on Wednesday night, taking home Olympic gold for the first time since 1998.
  • The game came down to 20 minutes of scoreless overtime, and then finally to a shootout, where it took six attempts for the Americans to finally prevail.
  • With the win, the United States women exorcise some demons of past matches against Canada, who had beaten the Americans in the previous two Winter Olympic gold medal games.

The United States women’s hockey team beat Canada in thrilling fashion on Wednesday night to take gold at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1998.

It was a dramatic back-and-forth match filled with history, with the teams so closely knotted that even the shootout needed an extra round before the dust finally settled.

Drouin saves day in shootout as Habs beat Sabres in opener https://briefnews.eu/drouin-saves-day-in-shootout-as-habs-beat-sabres-in-opener/ https://briefnews.eu/drouin-saves-day-in-shootout-as-habs-beat-sabres-in-opener/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 05:19:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/drouin-saves-day-in-shootout-as-habs-beat-sabres-in-opener/ Jonathan Drouin scored the lone shootout goal in rallying the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

While Canadiens goalie Carey Price looked his familiar formidable self.

Game Wrap: Jonathan Drouin scores shootout winner in Habs debut1:20

Price stopped 43 shots through overtime and denied all three of Buffalo’s shootout attempts following an off-season in which he signed an eight-year, $ 84 million contract extension.

Drouin, the Quebec-born first-round draft pick acquired in an off-season trade from Tampa Bay, then put on a nifty display by scoring the lone shootout goal and adding an assist.

Driving toward the net, Drouin faked left in prompting goalie Robin Lehner to make the first move, and then zagged to his right in backhanding the puck into the open side.

“It shows you the kind of skill level he’s got,” Canadiens coach Claude Julien said about the third player selected in the 2013 draft.

If Drouin proved to be the odd-man out among a talented Lightning group of forwards, he’s quickly finding his niche on a Canadiens team in need of offence.

Montreal traded prospect defenceman Mikhail Sergachev and a conditional 2018 second-round pick to acquire Drouin in June.

“It is important for the team, two points, but for me, too,” said Drouin, who’s pass through the crease set up Max Pacioretty’s one-timer that tied it 1-1 late in the first period.

Sabres blow lead

Phillip Danault forced overtime by scoring a short-handed goal on a wraparound with 11:59 left.

The Sabres blew two one-goal leads in spoiling Phil Housley’s debut as head coach and Jason Pominville’s two-goal outing in his first game back with Buffalo since being reacquired in a trade with Minnesota in June.

Housley lamented the loss, while noting he saw positive signs of the up-tempo style he’s introducing to Buffalo after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach in Nashville.

“We outshot the team, we out-chanced the team, we just didn’t beat them on the scoreboard,” said Housley, the Hall of Fame defenceman who broke into the NHL with Buffalo as an 18-year old in 1982. “We don’t like the result obviously, but I think we can take a lot of things from this game as we move forward.”

Buffalo took 45 shots, including 41 through three periods a year after the team topped 40 just four times.

Buffalo’s power play falter

Where Buffalo faltered was on the power play in converting just one of five opportunities. The Sabres managed one shot on goal during a two-man advantage spanning 78 seconds in the second period. And then they gave up the tying goal 42 seconds after Montreal’s Andrew Shaw was penalized for interference.

Canadiens defenceman Shea Weber gained the Sabres zone and briefly lost control of the puck before dumping it behind Buffalo’s net. Danault pounced on it and wrapped it in from the right side.

“We sort of took the foot off the gas there,” Housley said.

Buffalo is coming off a tumultuous off-season in which general manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma were fired after the team missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season. Jason Botterill took over as GM in May and a month later hired Housley.

Pominville opened the scoring with a power-play goal 8:30 into the first period and then converted Jack Eichel’s pass through the middle to put Buffalo up 2-1 in the opening minute of the second period.

The former Sabres captain spent the four-plus seasons in Minnesota before being was acquired along with defenceman Marco Scandella.

Officer escapes Las Vegas shootout unharmed as bullet hits his gun belt (PHOTO, GRAPHIC VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/officer-escapes-las-vegas-shootout-unharmed-as-bullet-hits-his-gun-belt-photo-graphic-video/ https://briefnews.eu/officer-escapes-las-vegas-shootout-unharmed-as-bullet-hits-his-gun-belt-photo-graphic-video/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 17:04:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/officer-escapes-las-vegas-shootout-unharmed-as-bullet-hits-his-gun-belt-photo-graphic-video/

Las Vegas police have released footage of a Tuesday shootout. In a scene worthy of an action movie, a suspect whipped out a gun on the two officers – one of whom escaped unharmed thanks to a sturdy gun belt.

Officers responded to a call about a suspicious-looking vehicle and when they interviewed the occupant, he opened fire, hitting both officers.

The person who made the call to the police claimed that their house had been burgled two days prior and that they had tracked their stolen cell phone to the location, according to an official police statement.

As the two responding officers interviewed the suspect, later identified as Miguel Salas, 25, he began acting suspiciously and attempted to start his vehicle and flee the scene several times. After refusing to comply with multiple requests to exit his vehicle, he opened fire on the officers with a handgun.

Both officers returned fire while taking cover and requested armed backup to deal with the situation.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team arrived on scene and formed a security cordon with their armed vehicles. They attempted to contact Salas via a speaker system but he was non-responsive.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene, having succumb to injuries sustained in the exchange of gunfire.

One of the officers was taken to the UMC Trauma Center for a gunshot wound while his partner was lucky enough to escape without any injuries as Salas’ bullet ricocheted off his gun belt.

This is the 15th officer-involved shooting for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department so far in 2017.

The LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team will conduct an investigation into the officers’ use of force.

Déjà vu: Shootout breaks Canadian hearts yet again https://briefnews.eu/deja-vu-shootout-breaks-canadian-hearts-yet-again/ https://briefnews.eu/deja-vu-shootout-breaks-canadian-hearts-yet-again/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 04:46:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/deja-vu-shootout-breaks-canadian-hearts-yet-again/

For Canadian hockey players, it’s never been easy to deal with a shootout loss.

And for the second time in four-and-a-half months at a major international tournament, there was Canada, once again, on the losing end of a gold-medal final shootout.

This time it was Sweden skating away with a 2-1 shootout victory to claim gold in Cologne, Germany over Ryan O’Reilly, Matt Duchene and Canada to end a bid for a third World championship in a row.

Another heartbreaking shootout loss

Just like the World junior final on Jan. 6, a game the United States won 5-4 thanks to a shootout, this was no way to end a championship tilt. But the International Ice Hockey Federation has settled its tournaments like this for decades and Canadians have felt the pain for decades.

I still maintain the 1998 Canadian Olympic team was as good as any of the Canadian clubs that claimed gold in 2002, 2010 and 2014. But Wayne Gretzky and Co. were simply foiled by the best goaltender in the world at the time, Dominik Hasek, in a shootout.

For those of us old enough, we’ll never forget the 1994 Olympic gold-medal final in Lillehammer, Norway. The Peter Forsberg postage-stamp shootout goal against Canadian goalie Corey Hirsch was the difference. But we all came away from that Winter Games so proud of Todd Hlushko, Brad Schlegel and the rest of that underdog Canadian bunch.

Just like this time. Who’s not a Ryan O’Reilly fan? The bearded Buffalo Sabres forward was so dominant. I hope one day he gets a shot at Olympic gold to go with his two World championship gold medals and his World Cup of hockey title last September.

Take a page from World Cup?

But let’s not get sucked into the vortex of a shootout debate. We all know this is a terrible way to end a hockey game. We’ve grown up with the dramatic overtime games of the Stanley Cup playoffs that end in the wee hours of the morning. It’s a treat.

The European-based IIHF has its soccer influence. If World Cup soccer finals are decided in OT then why not hockey?

Canadian head coach Jon Cooper was spot on with his remarks after the shootout loss.

“We sat in our locker room and don’t feel like we lost a hockey game tonight, we feel like we lost a shootout,” the native of Prince George, B.C. said. “I told our guys, ‘[hold] your head high.’

“We knew the rules going in, it was part of the format, and they bested us. I thought both goalies were exceptional, but in the end, it came down to a skill competition and they were better than us and they are deserving world champs.”

Good for Sweden goalie Henrik Lundqvist, one of the truly solid professionals in the game. Time is ticking for the 35-year-old Swede. He won two Le Mat Cups (Swedish titles) with Frolunda and his brother Joel in 2002-03 and 2004-05, and Olympic gold in 2006. He now has that elusive world title and it will be interesting to see if he can lasso a Stanley Cup championship as his career winds down.

Canadian hockey in good shape

Canada was seeking its third World title in a row, something it has not accomplished since the Edmonton Mercurys, Lethbridge Maple Leafs and Edmonton Mercurys, again, won consecutive championships representing Canada in 1950, 1951 and 1952, respectively.

O’Reilly and Duchene were trying to become the first Canadian players to win three in a row.

But what a run. Canada had an incredible 27-1-2 record in the last three World championship tournaments. The only loss in regulation time was to Finland in the preliminary round in 2016. The other two defeats were a preliminary round overtime loss to Switzerland last week and the shootout loss to Sweden on Sunday.

Hockey in this country continues to be in a good place, judging by the success of Canada at the last two Olympics and the past three World championships. Three different head coaches (Todd McLellan, Bill Peters and Cooper) steered Canada the last three World tournaments and 54 different players suited up to win two gold medals and settle for a silver this time.

From this tournament, fans of the Canadian game likely gained an appreciation for goalie Calvin Pickard of Winnipeg, defencemen Colton Parayko of St. Albert, Alta. and Chris Lee of MacTier, Ont., the only non-NHLer on Canada’s roster.

The 36-year-old Lee plays in Russia for Magnitogorsk Metallurg and Canadian coach Mike Pelino. Maybe Lee will be an anchor for the Canadian Olympic team in Pyeongchang, South Korea in eight months time if NHL commissioner Gary Bettman continues his stubborn stance to prohibit NHLers from participating in the Olympics.

If the NHLers stay home and its this country’s best juniors, AHLers and those playing pro in Europe who will represent Canada at the 2018 Olympics, they will be worth getting to know and Canada will have a shot at gold because of the depth in this country and winning spirit.

Star Wars shock: Han Solo deleted SHOOTOUT revealed by Greedo actor https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-shock-han-solo-deleted-shootout-revealed-by-greedo-actor/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-shock-han-solo-deleted-shootout-revealed-by-greedo-actor/#respond Wed, 26 Apr 2017 12:59:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-shock-han-solo-deleted-shootout-revealed-by-greedo-actor/

Greedo, of course, has become much discussed amongst fans because of the way his scene with Han in Mos Eisley changed in re-edits, altering whether or not it was Harrison Ford’s character who shot first.

But aside from that, it seems another Rodian character was set to appear later on, as Han left Tatooine in the Millennium Falcon.

In the 1997 re-cut of the movie, Han’s discussion with Jabba the Hutt was re-introduced, but it seems this particular, previously unknown moment never saw the light of day.

It involved Han in a shoot-out with another Rodian character before the Stormtroopers came through, prompting him to board the Falcon.

He and the Rodian, it seems, would have forgotten their rivalry and joined forces with each-other when the anonymous killers in white appeared.

Paul Blake, who played Greedo, told Sci Fi Central: “There’s a brilliant little sequence which I loved doing with Harrison [Ford], where we were shooting at each other like cowboys and Indians.

“We had this big gun battle which lasted all morning and then Stormtroopers came out of the big double doors and we started firing at them.

“So we had this fantastic scene and of course that’s all gone. But I’m sure George [Lucas] has got that all at Skywalker Ranch.”

Theo’s terrific double save0:43

A-League: Brisbane goalkeeper Michael Theo has made a terrific double save to start the elimination final against Western Sydney.

Brisbane Roar celebrate winning the A-League Elimination Final.

David WeinerFOX SPORTS

IN the 99th minute, Jamie Young was sitting on the bench watching a goalkeeping masterclass from Michael Theo.

Half an hour later, after a thrilling game was capped by a penalty shootout of extraordinary quality, Young stood tall and thwarted Jumpei Kusukami to prevail 6-5.

The classic elimination final finished 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, after goals in each half from Terry Antonis and Jamie Maclaren.

These two teams only know thrilling, with this clash the sequel – and Roar’s revenge – for last season’s 5-4 Wanderers triumph in the semi-final.

ANALYSIS: Roar’s Broich ‘punt’ that changed the game

REPORT: Roar set up Sunday showdown with Melbourne Victory

MATCH CENTRE: Live video updates, text commentary, stats and line-ups.

WHAAAT? Maclaren has his say on Manchester City rumours

Antonis scored from the spot after Brendon Santalab was felled by Avram Papadopoulos on the cusp of half-time, while Thomas Broich, who was poor in the first-half after a week in the headlines, was masterful in the second, and created the chance on the counter-attack that Golden Boot winner Maclaren finished.

With the game finely balanced, Jaushua Sotirio came on in the 87th minute for the Wanderers and was sent off in the 103rd minute.

It left plenty for Tony Popovic’s side to do, and although they sent the game to the penalty spot, they ran into an inspired Young.

The custodian replaced Michael Theo – who had kept Brisbane in the match in the first-half – and the veteran is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

“We know to be a successful team, you need a good goalkeeper,” John Aloisi said.

“I really believe the goalkeeper is the most important player on the pitch … I’m lucky I’ve got two outstanding goalkeepers who push themselves at training.

“They give me a headache … Youngy deserves it tonight because he worked hard in training and made sure he was ready.”

Young said: “To put that into words, I’ve waited a long time for that.

“I’m just happy to be in the winning team.

“To come on, make an impact, positive, it’s special.”

He added: “Without (Theo), we wouldn’t have been in this position.”

Here’s how the game unfolded, and the moments that mattered.

MICHAEL THEO KEEPS IT 1-0

No one has won more A-League grand finals than Theo, and his big game status was clear with his imperious first-half.

Simply, Wanderers should have been up within the first 10 minutes. But Theo made a phenomenal double save in the sixth minute to thwart both Brendon Santalab and then, within seconds, Nico Martinez.

He was also on duty to get down smartly to his right to deny Martinez with a shot late in the first-half.

It was all Western Sydney in the first-half as they conjured 21 shots to Brisbane’s eight. It took them until the cusp of the half to take the lead, with the Roar stabilising slightly after the washy opening 10 minutes.

In commentary, Robbie Slater remarked: “Tony Popovic will be filthy they didn’t take the lead with those two massive chances”.

In that frenetic few minutes after Theo’s double save, Terry Antonis drove close from distance, and Jade North had to clear a half chance off the line, before Martinez danced towards the box and fired just wide.

Slater assessed: “They’re picking up so much space in the lines and it’s not even been 10 minutes”.

ALOISI’S GAMBLE BACKFIRES EARLY

Aloisi chose Jade North at right back, but for stages in the first period, the Wanderers had a lot of joy by getting in behind the spaces left by Brandon Borrello and Thomas Broich.

However, Roar were not without chances of their own. Brett Holman fizzed inches wide from the areas he scored twice from last week, North had a header cleared and Borrello was starting to get to the right byline, fizzing dangerous balls into the box. Holman’s work was crucial – his running off the ball was a threat to Western Sydney, particularly when he ran beyond Maclaren. The best example was in the 26th minute, but his no-look, first time pass from the right just evaded the striker in the box.

WANDERERS DOMINATE, DESERVE THE LEAD

Heading into the half hour mark, Popovic’s side had 75% of the ball for the previous five minutes.

“Rotation in the middle of the park, they’re not dealing with it Brisbane,” Slater said.

At the break, with Western Sydney up 1-0, John Kosmina assessed: “Wanderers dominated possession, penetration, controlled middle of the park: movement off and on the ball has been great.

“Brisbane have been dragged out of shape all over the place.”

Rudan added: “Their midfield trio of Antonis, Baccus, Nichols … is a lot more mobile. All three bodies get into the box, that’s why it’s 21 (shots) to 8.

“The other area – Martinez, who occupies that left hand side, rotated with Mitch Nichols. I thought that worked wonders.”

VAR HAS A LOOK, BUT PEN GIVEN

On the cusp of half-time came the first blow, with Santalab going down under clumsy but slight contact from Papadopoulos.

Again, the opening was carved by Neville getting in behind Broich, but from there, Strebre Delovski took a full minute in the VAR box to confirm the on field decision was correct.

John Aloisi was apoplectic at the break, charging onto the field to complain, but at half-time, Fox Sports pundit Mark Rudan said:

“Was there contact? Yes.

“Did Santalab get to the ball? Yes.

“Did Brendon Santalab make the most of the contact? Yes he did.”

VAR was called upon again in the dyeing stages for a Roar appeal, but the penalty appeals were denied.

NEVER WRITE OFF THE MAESTRO, ROAR EDGE BACK INTO IT

Fox Sports sideline reporter Nick Meredith quipped that Broich mentioned to him “I’m too old for this stuff”.

In the first-half, it looked like it.

In the second, he was imperious yet again, and with his growing influence in the game, the Roar played their part in a pulsating climax.

Kosmina was asked on the Fox Sports half-time show whether he would take Broich off, and he replied: “It’s his last game, you want him to perform, he hasn’t so far”.

Never write off a legend.

With the tables turning at the start of the second period, the German was the catalyst for Roar’s equaliser, threading the decisive pass on the counter attack before Jamie Maclaren prodded home to make it 1-1.

In a perfect symbol of his complete reversal of form, he tracked back industriously to win a ball deep in his own half in the 70th minute, before unleashing Maclaren on the counter. The striker tried to shoot up against two defenders, but was thwarted.

The second half was a breathless affair at times, and then it was Vedran Janjetovic and Scott Neville’s chance to be the heroes with clutch stops on the line to deny Corey Brown and Brett Holman.

Borrello had a golden chance to bury Holman’s shot on the rebound, but could not convert.

Former Sydney FC keeper Janjetovic was the hero at the death, matching Theo earlier, with a top class save to tip a Borrello volley over in the 90th minute.

The supplier?

Broich.

“Now Aloisi’s thinking ‘how am I not 2-1 ahead?’” Slater said, adding: “The great players can pull themselves out of it, and he certainly has in this second-half”.

SOTIRIO’S HORROR SHOW, NERVES RISE IN EXTRA-TIME

You couldn’t take your eye off the action as we went into extra-time. It was tense, end to end finals fair.

Young saved brilliantly off Santalab with his first touch after Theo hobbled.

Then Sotirio, who only came on in the 87th minute and had already missed a gilt-edged chance, got his marching orders for a late challenge on Brown to pick up a second yellow.

Popovic admitted after that the send off was the turning point, with his young sub starting to stretch the game in his brief cameo before his brain snap.

“We lost the momentum, we lost the advantage,” Popovic said.

Aloisi rolled the tactical dice to take advantage of Sotirio’s send off, moving Borrello to fullback, replacing North with Nicholas D’Agostino at the half-time break.

As the Roar started to edge possession, Tommy Oar shot just wide from the edge of the box, D’Agostino thumped a header into Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Oar struck a free-kick at Janjetovic, but despite the extra man, Roar had to go to the spot.
