The German concern Siemens said it couldn’t verify a Reuters report that two more gas turbines have been delivered to Russia’s Crimea. Previously the company said two of its turbines were shipped to the peninsula in violation of international sanctions.
A representative of Siemens told RIA Novosti that he could not confirm the information about the delivery of new turbines.
On Thursday, Reuters posted a photo of the equipment on a ship in Feodosia, Crimea. The machinery is covered with blue tarpaulins and resembles gas turbines.
The agency said it couldn’t confirm the turbines were Siemens-made. However, an unnamed government official in Crimea told Reuters they were.
“Come on; we can’t talk about that. You understand sanctions, Siemens. Of course, this whole story is going to come out, but let it come out without us,” the source said.
Russia needs four turbines for new power stations on the Crimean peninsula, according to the agency’s information. Two of the turbines are for a power plant in Sevastopol, and the other two for a plant under construction in Simferopol, Reuters’ sources said.
Siemens says the turbines were made by Siemens Gas Turbine Technologies LLC, based in Russia’s St Petersburg. It is 65 percent owned by the German company and uses Siemens technology.
The buyer is Technopromexport, which is owned by Rostec. The Russian government wholly owns Rostec. Siemens has filed a lawsuit in a Moscow court. Siemens says the Russian partner informed them the turbines were intended for a power plant in Taman, 10km east of Crimea across the Kerch Strait.
Technopromexport said it bought the equipment on the secondary market and modernized it at Russian facilities.
Crimea broke away from Ukraine and became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in 2014.

You can add one more device to the pile of gadgets vying for your attention, now that Amazon has switched Alexa’s notifications on. The e-commerce titan first revealed that visual notifications were coming to its speakers on its developer site back in May. Now, the feature is live, though in very limited capacity. According to Fast Company and AFTVNews, it can only tell you about packages out for delivery at the moment. It doesn’t seem to be available for other Alexa skills yet, but hey, at least you can take the feature for a spin on Prime Day.
Amazon’s Alexa notifications are available for the Echo, the Echo Dot and the Echo Show. Based on the new help page published on the company’s website, the Echo and the Echo Dot’s light ring will display a pulsing yellow light when there’s a new notification, while the Echo Show will display a banner at the top of its screen. When you see them, just tell Alexa to read your notifications or ask the voice assistant “what did I miss?”
Eventually, your Amazon speakers will also be bugging you about other things, including weather updates from AccuWeather and new happenings from The Washington Post. You don’t have to deal with any of those if you don’t want to, though. The feature is opt in: you’ll have to enable it by going to Settings and toggling on Notifications under Accounts.

A terabyte isn’t cool, you know what’s cool? A petabyte. And companies like DigitalGlobe are creating more of them than they can upload to the cloud. That’s why Jeff Bezos has a service for shipping huge amounts of data via traditional roadways.
DigitalGlobe is a company that sells highly-detailed satellite imagery to clients ranging from journalists to oil companies to the US government. It’s been collecting these images of our world for 17 years and it needs to get 100 petabytes of data into the cloud. On May 9th, Wired had the chance to be in the warehouse when an unmarked 18-wheeler pulled into an Amazon Web Services center carrying 5 million times the bytes of the Library of Alexandria.
Amazon announced its Snowball data transfer devices in late 2015. This what one of them looks like:

It’s basically just a desktop-sized hard drive that can withstand heavy damage and automatically encrypts/stores up to 80 terabytes of information. The client uploads their data to the Snowball and then it gets physically shipped to an Amazon data center. A few months ago, the program was supersized and a truck that’s basically a hard drive was introduced. It would take around 1,250 Snowballs to handle DigitalGlobe’s archives but just a single snowball. And since that archive increases in size by 100 terabytes a day, many more Snowball-sized transactions will be needed in the near future.
Last year, Amazon Web Services made up just nine percent of its total revenue, but it accounted for 56 percent of its total operating income. It’s safe to say that the cloud computing arm of the company has been a big success. And with the Snowball program, Bezos recognized that there was a niche but lucrative market available. To upload all of DigitalGlobe’s data from your home computer, it would take 3oo years. A Snowmobile transfer takes about ten days. And with various companies trying to store more and more data for the purposes of machine learning, this market will only get bigger. Storage costs $ 0.005/GB per month and downloading the data back from the cloud costs $ 0.03/GB in the US. For storage alone, Amazon will rake in $ 500k a month from DigitalGlobal, and every time the company needs one of its images, the cash register will ring.
It’s a testament to the cyclical nature of technological innovation that we’ve hit a point in which we have to do things the old-fashioned way if we ever want to get to the future.

Typically, Nintendo ships hardware around the globe by sea. But to quickly meet the high demand at launch, it put a number of Switch consoles on airplanes.
A Nintendo spokesperson tells The Wall Street Journal, “We carried some of the Switches by plane in March to serve our customers more promptly.” Nintendo originally planned to ship 2 million Switch units at launch, but ended up getting 2.74 million in stores.
“Air is a big profit-squeezer because it could cost additional ¥5,000 (US$ 45) per unit,” said Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda
Nintendo has not disclosed to which locations Switch consoles were sent via air, but according to WSJ, analysts believe the flights moved the hardware from factories in China to the US and Europe.
In April, Nintendo says it switched, heh, to moving the hardware via boat, which is cheaper, but obviously takes longer.

GUEST:
Stephen Hawking famously said, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Before that happens, however, the emergence of AI-driven sales technology will almost certainly spell the end of selling as we know it now — and could spell the end of the line for businesses who don’t appreciate the power in the next wave of technology.
Imagine a digital sales assistant that responds to verbal commands. Those commands could be simple — “call the next most qualified lead in my queue,” for example. Or they could be complex — “provide an analysis of which up-sell offers have worked best for prospects like the one I’m working on.” Such assistants — when connected to large data sets of sales and marketing automation data — will allow salespeople to work at the speed of their thoughts, rather than at the speed their systems allow them to work.
Already, the consumer space is seeing an influx of products like Amazon Echo, Cortana and Siri. Almost 88 million devices with voice-activated functionality will be shipped this year, according to Strategy Analytics. That will rise to 347 million shipping in 2020, at which time some 970 million will be in use around the world.
Except within a few trailblazing companies, the revolution will start with individual salespeople. That’s how smartphones, social media and even CRM (in the form of contact management software) became part of the sales landscape: salespeople experienced the power of the technology, and then began to notice a gap between the technology-enabled experiences they had at home and the lagging experiences they had at work. That creates an “experience gap” — the wider that gap becomes, the more rapidly (and disruptively) it will be filled when conditions are right.
As the interface for the fast transmission of some types of data changes from a display to the spoken word, it is not hard to imagine what that could mean for a salesperson: a spoken-word guided selling system or a guided configuration function in configure price quote (CPQ) solutions; the ability to interact with sales management systems while in the car; the rapid generation of new types of reports based on criteria spoken to the assistant by a manager, then viewed on a screen.
The next level would be the assistant as a partner: suggesting sales tactics, prompting the salesman about content the prospect should receive, or prioritizing sales calls based on deal stage, deal value, and factors in marketing data that suggest likelihood to buy.
This can all be enabled through machine learning, which discovers patterns associated with outcomes automatically. The next stage is to alter the patterns based on context; when the framework the data exists in shifts – including new competitive products, customer behaviors, economic conditions, and more — the patterns must shift as well.
All of this requires access to data, and not a single data set. Applying machine learning to one set of data relating to the sales and marketing process is somewhat useful, but it will be limited in its impact. Machine learning must be connected to a comprehensive collection of data covering all aspects of the buying and selling process. To provide answers that are current and correct, AI must draw from customer data from marketing automation, performance data from the sales organization (including data about commissions, quote generation, sales content performance and other data), external data about the market, and even predictive data (such as the projected effects of changes to the sales process or product mix).
When this is done successfully, the results will be ground-breaking. It will be as if every salesperson has an assistant at their side to help them make decisions and to arm them with planning advice, upselling and cross-selling suggestions and access to content virtually instantaneously.
But the interface will be the most visible and, paradoxically, the least important aspect of an assistive sales solution. The data makes the interface a powerful tool instead of a novelty. Success depends on having complete data, up-to-date data, with the most important and accurate data given priority, and in a format that makes it compatible with whatever machine learning-enabled system sales is using. Having data accessible in an assortment of disconnected repositories will deprive the assistive intelligence solution of the ability to make the best decisions and will cause real adoption problems by making it harder to close deals rather than easier.
We may well see a new sales technology arms race as machine learning is combined with sales data. But it would be unwise to place the initial emphasis on the assistive technology. That new interface – with all the benefits of ease of use, speed and flexibility – depends on a sound foundation of data. Success will come far faster for companies that prepare their sales data sources for the AI future.

]]>But circa 1994, he was fresh out of school and serving as a cofounder at pioneering web software company Netscape Communications, which had just signed a $ 7 million deal with telecom giant MCI to help build MCI Marketplace, an early take on an Amazon-style online store.
On stage at this week’s Google Cloud Next conference, Andreessen says the MCI Marketplace was “a big day for a startup company,” and required them to work around the clock for six months to get it done and ready. Once it was done, he told one of their engineers to get it out to MCI.
“The next day, I get to work, I get the angriest phone call I think I’ve ever received,” says Andreessen.
Netscape “did not have a process for shipping software,” Andreessen says — so the engineer burned the software to a CD and “put it in a Ziploc baggie” he had gotten from the kitchen, and put it in the mail.
“It was literally ‘We paid you $ 7 million and you sent us a CD-ROM in a baggie,'” Andreessen recalls being told by his MCI contact. Andreessen does note, however, that it was a fresh bag, not used for a sandwich, so at least there’s that.

A 2000 profile of Andreessen from Wired sheds more light on the MCI/Netscape relationship: When the $ 7 million check first arrived, Andreessen was so excited that he went around showing it to each employee personally. Circa 2000, at least, he told Wired he regretted the deal: “[What] we didn’t realize is that we were selling our soul.”
Committing to MCI as a customer meant Netscape, with its limited resources, had to prioritize their needs over a wider customer base. “A big early customer owns you,” Andreessen told Wired. In 1999, AOL purchased Netscape for about $ 10 billion, while Andreessen went on to other ventures.

“…two months before we shipped Half-Life 1, we lost the whole history; our VSS exploded”, Valve’s Erik Johnson told Gamasutra last week. “And so we had to put that all together off people’s machines. So yeah, we don’t have the history going back to the very start. We have the snapshot from that month.”

Grand Theft Auto V launched over three years ago, yet it’s still a big money-maker, proving that — at least in some small way — crime does pay. The popular open-world action game has now shipped 75 million copies, publisher Take-Two Interactive revealed today during an earnings call.
That’s a number Take-Two’s other high-grossing titles can’t begin to touch. Mafia III shipped 5 million copies (4.5 million of those were during launch week), while NBA 2K17 shipped nearly 7 million and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI passed 1.5 million. GTA V’s numbers place it in the same league of blockbusters as Minecraft (over 100 million copies sold) and Wii Sports (82.79 million sold). While the number of copies shipped to stores doesn’t equal the amount sold-through to customers, it’s an indicator of how well the game is performing.
Grand Theft Auto V and its online mode, GTA Online, were great for Take-Two’s bottom line last year. The publisher’s net revenue grew 15 percent to $ 476.5 million, but not all of that was from game sales. Almost a quarter of it came from virtual currency, microtransactions and downloadable add-on content. Developer Rockstar has steadily supported both GTA V and GTA Online with free content since launch. Recent updates included underground motorcycle clubs, holiday-themed items and a new Tron-inspired mode called Deadline.
