Independent Russian gas producer Novatek has announced the first delivery of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Yamal project in the Arctic to an area near the port of Honningsvag in northern Norway.

“The Arc7 ice-class LNG tanker ‘Vladimir Rusanov’ successfully reloaded an LNG cargo delivered from the Yamal LNG facility at Sabetta to the lower ice-class designated tanker ‘Pskov’, which will deliver the reloaded cargo to customers in North-West Europe,” Novatek said.

“The first ship-to-ship LNG transshipment is a very important commercial milestone for us,” said Novatek’s Deputy Board Chairman Lev Feodosyev. He explained that it allows for the optimization of transport costs “by decreasing the travel distance of the Arc7 ice-class tankers and to ensure timely offloading of LNG from Yamal LNG project.”

Novatek earlier announced future large-scale LNG transshipment projects in Kamchatka and the Murmansk regions.

The $ 27 billion Yamal LNG project began operations last December and has already shipped two million tons of the liquefied fuel. The LNG plant is expected to have three trains with an annual capacity of 16.5 million tons per year when fully operational.

Currently, Novatek ships LNG from two trains with a total capacity of about 11 million tons per annum. The launch of the third stage with a capacity of 5.5 million tons per year is planned for the beginning of 2019.

In September, Novatek announced plans for one additional line able to produce a million tons of LNG per year. Besides Novatek, Yamal LNG’s shareholders also include France’s Total, China’s CNPC and the Silk Road Fund.

Most of the crude exported from Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq passes through the Strait of Hormuz. It is also the route for nearly all the liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the world’s largest exporter, Qatar.

On Thursday, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the Strait Of Hormuz will be “for all or for no one,” according to Tasnim News agency. The US Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, is dedicated to protecting commercial ships in the area.

“The declared nominal throughput capacity of the Strait of Hormuz is about 14 oil tankers per day, or 17 million barrels per day, or about half of the world’s daily crude oil exports. If exports through it stop, the law of supply and demand would double oil prices to $ 160 per barrel,” Vladimir Rojankovski, investment analyst at Global FX, told RT.

The analyst added that if the Strait is blocked for one or two months, oil traders could panic and buy out all available crude futures, sending prices to $ 250 per barrel. However, Rojankovski expressed doubt that Iran would do that since the area is highly militarized.

Artem Avinov, leading analyst with TeleTrade, also predicts that oil prices could jump to $ 250 per barrel if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked by Iran. But he also notes that such a scenario is highly improbable. “I am skeptical about the possibility of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to cut off oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz for several days or weeks. Even if Iran really acts, we are likely to see a quick economic or military retaliation, which will lead to the lifting of restrictions,” he told RT.

Another RT guest, Mikhail Mashchenko, who is an analyst at investors’ social network eToro, doesn’t believe crude will skyrocket even if a blockade takes place, since Brent never topped $ 150 per barrel.

He adds that US President Donald Trump’s rhetoric is propping up oil prices despite his wish to lower them. “If Trump didn’t try isolate Tehran so actively, investors would not have been buying oil so massively because of fears of a deficit. The fate of the oil market depends on the further actions of the top producers: How much the export from the US will decrease, and how much Saudi Arabia and Russia, which have a lot of unused capacities, will increase production,” he said.

“The first cargo delivered to the growing Indian market is an important development step in this direction,” Feodosyev said.

One of Russia’s largest gas producers, Novatek runs the Yamal LNG project. It comprises natural gas production, liquefaction, and shipping. It is a joint venture of Novatek, France’s Total, China’s National Petroleum Corporation, and the Silk Road Fund. The controlling stake in the enterprise belongs to Novatek. Twenty percent each is owned by Total and CNPC, and the remaining 9.9 percent belongs to the Silk Road Fund.

Since the launch of production at the Yamal LNG plant in the Russian Arctic, Novatek has shipped more than 1 million tons of liquefied gas. A total of four brand new and powerful LNG carriers now shuttle to and from the project’s terminal of Sabetta. Eleven more vessels of the kind are currently under construction.

The ships have powerful icebreaking capacities and are able to ship along the Northern Sea Route in Russia’s Arctic waters, mostly year-round.

Novatek plans another large-scale LNG project, called Arctic LNG-2. The project’s capacity will be over 18 million tons of LNG per year. The company also wants to begin construction of the first LNG train in 2022 or 2023.

Another tanker is reportedly on its way, despite Washington’s sanctions against Moscow and amid grand plans of conquering Europe’s gas market.

The tanker named Gaselys, owned by French energy company Engie, arrived in Boston on Sunday morning, the US Coast Guard confirmed to Sputnik. “As far as I know, there are no problems,” a spokesman said. The vessel is loaded with gas originating from Russia’s Yamal LNG plant at the British port of Isle of Grain from which it headed to Everett, an American terminal near Boston.

The US sanctions, imposed in particular against Russia’s largest non-state gas producer Novatek – which happens to be Yamal LNG’s main shareholder – does not seem to hinder business this time. France’s Total, China National Petroleum Corporation and the Silk Road Fund hold the remaining 49.9 percent of shares in the project, located in the Russian Arctic.

Technically, the cargo is not subject to sanctions imposed by the US on key stakeholders in the Russian energy sector since the gas was bought by the French company and delivered on a French vessel.

The delivery was however bogged down with delays, arriving eight days past the original schedule due to unfavorable sailing conditions. A day before its scheduled arrival on January 20, the tanker briefly turned east towards the Portuguese port of Algeciras, sparking speculations of a last-minute route change. However, the spokesman for Engie explained the deviation from the original route was caused by bad weather, noting that the delivery time will be adjusted.

Meanwhile, it was reported that a second tanker named Provalys will deliver another shipment of Russian gas from the French port of Dunkirk to New England. The tanker is due to arrive on February, 15, according to Bloomberg.

Washington has long been eyeing the lucrative European energy market, offering its shale LNG as an alternative to Russian natural gas supplies through pipelines, and persuading its allies that Europe’s future depends on it.

Moscow in turn has been accusing Washington of stamping out competition by strangling major Russian energy projects with sanctions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in January that the US “clearly forced Europeans to abandon Nord Stream 2” pipeline that would provide Germany with cheaper Russian gas.

“The United States opposes the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. We see it as undermining Europe’s overall energy security and stability,” US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reiterated on a visit to Poland on Saturday.

Tillerson’s statement reflects President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy and makes perfect sense “in the context of the US sanctions against Russia,” Matthias Dornfeldt, a German expert on energy issues, told RT.

“The pure interest of the US is to sell their gas in order to bring up its own gas industry with a lot of employment,” Dornfeldt said. “That is why they try to play it in some kind of political way, but it is in the economic interests of the US.”

“We already reached energy security,” the German energy expert said, arguing that Europeans have many options for where to buy their gas, including Norway, Algeria and other OPEC and Central Asian countries. “It is only the question: Who has the biggest share in the market?”

In the meantime the US doesn’t mind undermining its own energy security, since business is business, and the severe cold snap that hit the US East Coast caused demand to soar and drove gas prices to a staggering $ 6,300 per a thousand cubic meters, making foreign gas deliveries a feasible option.

The first cargo of Pennsylvanian coal is on its way to Ukraine under a deal sealed between US Xcoal Energy & Resources and Ukrainian state-run Centrenergo earlier this year, the Ukrainian Embassy said on its Facebook page.

According to the contract, Ukraine will get 700,000 tons of coal from the US State of Pennsylvania this year.

“US coal will be a secure and reliable energy source for Centrenergo and its electricity customers. This shipment will boost both of our country’s economies by supporting jobs in the coal and transportation industries,” said US Energy Secretary Rick Perry in a statement.

Ukraine holds the third largest anthracite coal reserves in the world, according to the Ukrainian coal miner and trader Sadovaya Group.

However, over half of its coal resources are in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. The country faced massive disruption at power plants using anthracite coal after the railways leading to the territories were blocked by Kiev-backed militant groups.

In an attempt to maintain coal supplies, Kiev has turned to foreign producers and opted for anthracite coal from the US.

Earlier this year, US Energy Information Administration reported the price for coal shipped to Ukraine in the first quarter of the current year has almost tripled compared to the same period in 2016. At the same time, sales of American coal to Ukraine have more than doubled.

Spanish authorities say they worked with Ecuadorean police to stop a freighter off the South American country’s coast carrying more than 5.5 metric tons of cocaine headed to Spain.

Spanish national police also said another boat, a Venezuelan fishing vessel, was intercepted with 2.4 metric tons of cocaine.

The Interior Ministry said Ecuadorean agents boarded the ship nearly 3 nautical miles off the coast of Santa Elena province, according to the Associated Press.

A statement issued on Monday said the ship was loaded with Colombian cocaine in the Pacific and was to travel through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic to Europe. The statement, seen by the AP, said the shipment was organized by a drug-trafficking ring based in northeastern Galicia.

Police found 176 bags of cocaine concealed in the cargo and arrested the 20 men on the ship. One of them was a Spaniard allegedly belonging to the Galician trafficking ring. Four other people were arrested in Spain.

News site El Comercio called the seizure the largest in Ecuador’s history.

The seizure of nearly 8 metric tons of cocaine comes after a week in which Ecuadorean authorities intercepted 3.5 metric tons of the drug in four operations, according to El Universo.

The first bust was May 4, when a coast guard patrol stopped a boat near the Galapagos Islands with two Ecuadoreans and a Colombian aboard, finding 964 kilograms of cocaine reportedly destined for Central American.

A day later, in the small fishing town of Anconcito on Ecuador’s central coast, police seized more than 500 kilograms of cocaine and arrested 23 of Ecuadoreans allegedly involved in trafficking drugs to the US.

On Saturday, police aided by dogs discovered more than a metric ton of cocaine hidden in a container with a commercial banana shipment (a popular smuggling method for traffickers) destined for Belgium.

On Sunday, police in a fishing town about 100 miles northeast of Quito found another metric ton of cocaine that was about to shipped by sea.

The latter two seizures yielded no arrests.

Ecuador, perched between major cocaine producers in Peru and Colombia, has long been a transshipment point for the drug.

Recent years appear to underscore how the country has quickly become a major transit point for drug traffickers.

“One of the largest increases in cocaine seizures in the past five years has been observed in Ecuador, where the amount of cocaine seized rose by over 242 per cent, amounting to 50 metric tons in 2014,” the UN’s International Narcotics Control Board wrote in its 2015 report.

In the first two months of 2015 alone, Ecuador saw a fivefold increase in illegal-drug seizures compared to 2014.

At the beginning of March 2016, US officials in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, intercepted 154 pounds of cocaine valued at $ 2 million that had come from the Ecuador. That bust was preceded by two operations off Ecuador’s coast that netted about 3,200 pounds of cocaine.

2016 saw Ecuadorean authorities seize 110 metric tons of drugs, particularly cocaine.

Through November 2016, the country had intercepted 61 metric tons of that drug, exceeding the 59 metric tons of it captured throughout 2015.

In one incident already this year, authorities in Ecuador seized 2.3 metric tons of liquid cocaine mixed with oil and set to be shipped to Mexico.

Ecuador’s rising prominence in the drug trade is likely the result of a number of factors — not all of them domestic.

In Colombia, the ongoing peace process with the left-wing FARC rebels has pulled some of those rebels out of the drug trade, allowing criminal groups to move in, especially in the production hotspot of Nariño, which borders Ecuador.

Cultivation of coca, cocaine’s base ingredient, is also booming in Colombia for a variety of reasons, including decreased eradication efforts and increased economic incentives.

Inside Ecuador, smuggling efforts have been facilitated by powerful criminal networks — Colombian and Mexican groups among them. Maritime routes also appear to have grown in popularity as the country’s fishermen struggle to find work.
