The economist, who predicted the 2007-2008 crisis, told Yahoo Finance that current data shows “a sign of weakness.”

Housing pivots take more time than those in the stock market, Shiller said, adding that “the housing market does have a momentum component and we’re seeing a clipping of momentum at this time.”

The Nobel Laureate explained: “If the markets go down, it could bring on another recession. The housing market has been an important element of economic activity. If people start to get pessimistic about housing and pull back and don’t want to buy, there will be a drop in construction jobs and that could be a seed for another recession.” He added: “By the way, we’re overdue for another recession.”

When reminded that 2006 predated the greatest financial crisis in a lifetime, Shiller acknowledged that any correction would likely be far less severe.

“The drop in home prices in the financial crisis was the most severe drop in the US market since my data begin in 1890,” the Yale economist said.

“It could be that we’re primed to repeat it because it’s in our memory and we’re thinking about it but still I wouldn’t expect something as severe as the Great Financial Crisis coming on right now. There could be a significant correction or bear market, but I’m waiting and seeing now.”

The infamous US housing bubble in the mid-2000s and the subsequent subprime meltdown were key factors spurring the broader financial crisis of 2008. A speculative frenzy over house prices, mortgages beyond long-term capabilities to finance, and eventually a wave of defaults by borrowers, threatened the solvency of some key financial institutions which in turn led to a stock market crash, and the global financial crisis.

In a post on Project Syndicate Thursday, Shiller said the cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio he helped develop was useful in predicting returns over the next decade. The gauge values stocks based on the past 10 years of earnings to smooth out periods when growth or weakness was abnormal.

In the peak months before bear markets — widely defined as declines of 20% or more —  the CAPE ratio was above its average of 22.1. On Friday, it was slightly above 30.

The market’s inactivity is also a reason to be wary, Shiller said. Stock-price volatility was lower than average in the year leading up to the peak month before all of the last 13 bear markets, Shiller wrote. It’s currently lower than the 3.1% average for the time frame including those bear markets.

Does this mean that a bear market is imminent? Shiller says no.

“Such episodes are difficult to anticipate, and the next one may still be a long way off,” he said.

Still, this “analysis should serve as a warning against complacency,” Shiller said. He continued: “Investors who allow faulty impressions of history to lead them to assume too much stock-market risk today may be inviting considerable losses.”

Uncertainty around when the next bear market could come is partly why most strategists at major Wall Street firms are reluctant to turn bearish even as they continuously warn that stocks are overvalued. The median year-end S&P 500 forecast among strategists tracked by Bloomberg is 2,500, implying a nearly 12% gain for the market in 2017.

They wouldn’t want clients to miss out on the late stages of the bull market, which is typically when returns are the highest. Also, double-digit earnings growth and an economy nudging a 3% growth pace are attractive. 

Screen Shot 2017 09 22 at 10.00.13 AMBank of America Merrill LynchThat doesn’t take away from the fact that stocks are overvalued. But this fact alone is not a reliable buy or sell signal, according to Laszlo Birinyi, the president of Birinyi Associates, who was one of the first to nail the current bull market.

“We can catalog a bunch of articles [on the Shiller CAPE ratio] that show no one’s ever said to buy. It’s always been ‘the market’s overpriced,’ ‘the market’s expensive,’ ‘the market’s high,’ but no one’s ever said buy. In July 2009, there were some articles saying that according to some valuation measures, the market was fully valued. In July 2009! To me, something that’s never told me to buy is not something I’m going to listen to when deciding when to sell.”

Robert Shiller, the Nobel-winning author who predicted the two biggest speculative markets in recent history, is repeating that bitcoin is in a bubble.

The cryptocurrency is “the best example right now,” Shiller told Quartz’s John Detrixhe in an interview published Tuesday. In January 2014 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he called the cryptocurrency “an amazing example of a bubble,” adding that there was “no question about it.”

Bitcoin has exploded in price and popularity since then. Bitcoin was at $ 4,337 on Tuesday, or about 442% over its price in January 2014 of about $ 800 a coin.

For evidence that bitcoin is in a bubble, Shiller pointed to “a fundamental deep angst of our digitization and computers, that people wonder what their place is in this new world.” That fear gives some people a sense that they know the future and can profit from it, he told Quartz.

It’s the same kind of angst that President Donald Trump addressed while he was campaigning, Shiller said.

Shiller’s “Irrational Exuberance” is a seminal book that forecast the tech-stock and housing crashes and outlined the investor behavior that created both bubbles. The speed of bitcoin’s rally has far outpaced most recent bubbles, as the chart below shows:

Shiller also told Quartz that there were “aspects of a housing bubble and a stock-market bubble right now.” The cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio that he popularized shows that stocks are the most expensive since the tech bubble collapsed in 2000.
