  • Roughly 1 million barrels of Russian crude could be redirected come 2023 as Europe's new sanctions kick in.
  • Energy research firm Kpler broke down potential destinations where Russian oil could pivot to as Moscow seeks new markets.
  • Those nations include Indonesia, Pakistan, and Brazil, among others.

Once Europe's partial ban on Russian oil kicks in this December, the direction of those crude flows could change dramatically as Moscow seeks new buyers for its excess barrels.

In a Friday note by Kpler's Viktor Katona, the research firm highlighted seven different nations other than China and India that could see an uptick of Russian oil deliveries in 2023.

Indonesia

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has acknowledged the potential for buying Russian oil, and Kpler sees the country as a top prospect for a surge in imports from Russia.

"Very much alike India, Jakarta is seeing discounted barrels as a way of mitigating inflation – after the government hiked fuel prices by 30% in early September (as the country's $ 34 billion subsidy system was getting untenable), inflation worries have come to the forefront again," according to the note.

The last time an Indonesian refiner purchased a Russian crude cargo was December 2016. In Kpler's view, Indonesia could see a potential influx of 100,000 to 150,000 Russian crude barrels per day.

Pakistan

Pakistan, too, has publicly weighed buying Russian crude, Kpler explained, as the government in Islamabad has reportedly asked the nation's refiners to consider buying discounted supplies from Russia as crude prices soar.

Still, there are some reservations.

"Given that Pakistan is effectively buying crude from two Middle Eastern producers – Saudi Arabia and the UAE – it remains to be seen whether domestic refiners would risk antagonizing their relationship," Kpler said.

Pakistan could see a jump of roughly 50,000 to 100,000 additional barrels per day from Russia.

Brazil

Kpler anticipates that Brazil's October elections will rejuvenate its international ties to so-called BRICS nations, of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Brazil has ramped up its intake of domestic production throughout 2022 and flows to domestic markets are at their highest since 2019. At the same time, its exports have dipped slightly.

"Given that Urals is of very similar quality to Brazil's Tupi or Buzios (same density, higher Sulphur content), refining a discounted crude could free up a substantial portion of Brazilian production to maximize profits," Kpler's Katona wrote.

Brazil could have see an uptick of roughly 100,000 to 200,000 barrels per day from Russia moving forward, according to Kpler.

South Africa

Historically, South Africa has only had one delivery of Russian crude, which came earlier this summer, according to Kpler. But its status as one of Russia's BRICS peers means it stands as a likely candidate for higher volumes.

What's more, the nation's Natref refinery, Kpler noted, is less likely to self-sanction from doing business with Moscow compared to BP- and Shell-owned Sapref.

There could be a potential impact of 50,000 to 100,000 barrels per day flowing from Russian ports to South Africa.

Sri Lanka

Since August, Kpler reports that Sri Lanka has already started buying one cargo per month of Russian crude, and the research firm expects this pace to continue moving forward.

As it deals with massive debt and political turmoil, Sri Lanka's oil imports are set to remain depressed, but that could open it up for a small increase in crude deliveries from Russia.

Kpler said the nation could see a marginal increase of about 20,000 to 30,000 Russian barrels per day.

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

It's unclear whether any Middle Eastern nations will step up as buyers of Russian crude, but Kpler noted that refineries in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in particular will be operating at full tilt once Europe's new sanctions begin.

"Given that these refineries will be effectively reducing exportable volumes, all this in a period of elevated crude prices, the temptation might be to feed Urals into the refineries and let the likes of Arab Light flow freely in Asia," Kpler wrote.

The potential impact for these Middle East countries are both the highest and lowest, with a range of zero to 500,000 barrels per day flowing from Russia.

David Attenborough reveals ‘huge shift’ in climate change ‘restoring Earth’s balance’ https://briefnews.eu/david-attenborough-reveals-huge-shift-in-climate-change-restoring-earths-balance/ https://briefnews.eu/david-attenborough-reveals-huge-shift-in-climate-change-restoring-earths-balance/#respond Fri, 15 Nov 2019 19:52:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-attenborough-reveals-huge-shift-in-climate-change-restoring-earths-balance/

The carbon cycle is the key process by which carbon is exhaled among the atmosphere of Earth and is vital to sustaining life along with the nitrogen and water cycle, too. Human activities over the past two centuries have significantly increased the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, mainly in the form of carbon dioxide, both by modifying ecosystems’ ability to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and by emitting it directly through the burning of fossil fuels. One way this is reduced is through whales, these deep-sea giants facilitate carbon absorption through their movements — especially when diving — they tend to push nutrients from the bottom of the ocean to the surface, where they feed the phytoplankton and other marine flora that suck in carbon, as well as fish and other smaller animals.

However, earlier this month Sir David took viewers to the icy continent of Antarctica for the first episode of his new BBC series “Seven Worlds, One Planet” and the 93-year-old revealed the shocking activities of the last two centuries.

He said: “Life here under the ice has remained unchanged for millennia, but in the last 200 years, much of Antarctica’s wildlife has had to face new predators – human beings.

“We devised new hunting techniques and used them so mercilessly that we almost exterminated great whales.“These whaling stations on South Georgia were at the centre of this industry.

“More than one-and-a-half million whales were slaughtered in Antarctic waters, the blubber was stripped from their massive bodies and boiled down in vats to make margarine and soap.

The recovery in life in Antarctic waters may have a significance that extends far beyond the reaches of the continent

David Attenborough

“In just decades, a population of 35,000 whales was so reduced that only 35 of the females survived.”

There is hope though, the legendary presenter revealed.

He added: “But times have changed, a ban on the commercial hunting of whales, introduced in 1986, has stopped all of Japan, Norway and Iceland.

“Our relationship to these remarkable creatures has undergone a huge shift and by putting a stop to commercial hunting, this population has now grown to over 2,000.”

“The recovery in life in Antarctic waters may have a significance that extends far beyond the reaches of the continent and will affect us all.

“Just off the coast of Elephant Island, we have recently witnessed what might be the greatest feeding spectacle on Earth.“On the horizon, over 150 whales have gathered to feast on krill.”

Sir David finalised, by revealing the incredible change that is now thriving in these waters.

He concluded: “This is the largest congregation of great whales ever filmed.

“These are mostly fin whales, up to 26 metres long, Humpback whales are dwarfed in comparison.

“Thousands of animals from all over Antarctica waters are making their way here.

“These seas are, once again, beginning to brim with life and scientists have discovered that the Southern Ocean, and the life within it, soaks up more than twice as much carbon from the atmosphere as the Amazon rainforest.

“By protecting Antarctica, we don’t just protect the life here, we are helping to restore the natural balance of the entire planet.”

Sir David explained why he still gets the same buzz from making documentaries and hopes it will inspire others.

He explained: “It is extraordinary.

“I’m thrilled that we’re about to share this incredible series with the world.

“Seven Worlds, One Planet celebrates the variety of life on our planet while also shining a spotlight on its challenges.”

The third episode of Seven Worlds, One Planet was aired on BBC One on Sunday, November 10, at 6.15pm.

Alabama cops who killed ‘wrong’ suspect in Thanksgiving mall shooting shift blame onto victim https://briefnews.eu/alabama-cops-who-killed-wrong-suspect-in-thanksgiving-mall-shooting-shift-blame-onto-victim/ https://briefnews.eu/alabama-cops-who-killed-wrong-suspect-in-thanksgiving-mall-shooting-shift-blame-onto-victim/#respond Tue, 27 Nov 2018 02:05:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alabama-cops-who-killed-wrong-suspect-in-thanksgiving-mall-shooting-shift-blame-onto-victim/ The family of an Alabama man shot by police on Thanksgiving is demanding justice after cops appeared to blame the victim for his own murder, even going so far as to retract a statement admitting they were wrong to shoot him.

Police have conspicuously avoided taking responsibility for the death of Emantic Bradford Jr. after shooting and killing him during a Thanksgiving night melee at a Birmingham mall. Four press releases later, they have not spoken directly to his family, who have called for the release of body-cam footage of the altercation.

Hoover police have changed their story repeatedly regarding Thursday night’s shooting at the Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham. After initially congratulating themselves on the “heroic” takedown of Bradford, whom they identified as the gunman who wounded a 12-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man when a fight broke out at the mall, officers soon learned through witness interviews and forensic evidence that they’d shot the wrong man – and that the real shooter was still on the loose.

Police took the unusual step of admitting their mistake in a statement released on Friday night. While they stopped short of apologizing to Bradford’s family, they did express “regret that our initial media release was not totally accurate.” The officer who shot Bradford was placed on administrative leave and the investigation was turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

By Monday morning, that statement had also been memory-holed – no longer available on @HooverPD’s Twitter – and the story had changed again, this time emphasizing that Bradford had “brandished a gun during the seconds following the gunshots, which instantly heightened the sense of threat” – implying that Bradford was to blame for his own murder by making the officer fear for his safety in the “chaotic scene.”

Bradford’s father, a veteran correctional officer, told the media his son had a license to carry his weapon. Meanwhile, witnesses’ stories cast the official story in a dim light – some claimed the officer did not verbally warn Bradford before shooting him in the face, while others claim several people were “brandishing” guns during the fight. The fourth and final press release from @HooverPD qualifies the term “brandish” to mean “Mr. Bradford had a gun in his hand.”

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who has been retained by Bradford’s family, decried the shooting as an example of institutionalized police racism. The officer “saw a black man with a gun, and he made his determination that he must be a criminal,” he said at a press conference on Sunday, claiming officers even barred a nurse who witnessed the shooting from trying to save Bradford’s life. Crump represented the family of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old shot by police who claimed to mistake his toy gun for a real weapon, as well as Trayvon Martin, shot by George Zimmerman under Florida’s infamous “stand your ground” laws.

15 Tips to Manage Shift Work and Your Quality of Life https://briefnews.eu/15-tips-to-manage-shift-work-and-your-quality-of-life/ https://briefnews.eu/15-tips-to-manage-shift-work-and-your-quality-of-life/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 00:07:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/15-tips-to-manage-shift-work-and-your-quality-of-life/ It’s no secret that shift work can take a toll on your physical well being, emotional state, and your mental health. In industries that require 24-hour-services or work weeks that operate around 12-hour shift rotations, there can still be some resistance when bouncing from week after week.

Over time, the hobbies you once loved may get pushed to the side and burnouts may come creeping in resulting to emotions of disconnect, isolation, and possibly unfulfillment.

Changing your lifestyle is challenging but achievable. Like most of the other things in life, it’s the act of balance that genuinely affects the quality of your life.

Now it’s time to dive in. Here are 15 tips to enhance your quality of life when shift work may be weighing you down:

1. Discover what’s working for you

Ask yourself – “what is working for me?”

Recently, I have come to realize that I’m much more of a morning person than I am a night owl. I write better, my focus is clear, and I feel as if I’m working at my optimal level. Discovering this was a game-changer and has helped me grasp an understanding of how to show up physically and mentally at work.

A good starting place is taking notice of the small things that work and doesn’t work for you:

  • Does coffee actually make me crash when I start my shift at 11 p.m.?
  • How cluttered is my mind when I go to sleep after work versus running some of my errands first?
  • I’m missing another family function, how am I feeling at work and do I always feel this way?

Noticing these small details can enhance your overall quality of your life.

2. Take a mental health day off

Burnouts happen to the best of us, and even the most successful people face them.

Everyone goes through a period of complete mental and physical exhaustion, but there are always signs leading up to a burn out including lack of motivation, decreased satisfaction, and health problems. Taking a mental healthday can help.

Shift work can be a stressful thing and giving your mind the relaxation and self-care that it deserves will help you make clearer and healthier decisions

3. Spend minimal time on social media

When you’re working odd hours of the day, it may be difficult to stray away from social media – the digital and interactive platforms that keep you connected with the “outside” world.

Engaging in social media is also an act of balance and indulging in ample amounts of blue light and diving into the rabbit hole of scrolling will not only exhaust you mentally but may leave you feeling disconnected from everyone.

The digital world will always be there. Don’t forget to make time to connect with real world too.

4. Invest in an eye pillow

In reality, it’s not the morning caffeine boost that gets your day going – it’s the sleep you received the night before. That is vital. A defective sleep can leave you feeling unfocused and overall affects the way you get your day started.

Eye pillows are great for those who might have a hard time sleeping as the essential oils infused in the silky fabric can help alleviate tension, stress, and help you achieve quality sleep.

5. Designated “me” time every day

As a number, 24 hours may seem at large. Add in your 8-hour work day, everyday tasks, commuting and other life obligations, it might be hard to squeeze in an hour just for yourself.

Spending one hour to by yourself and with yourself can shift the overall quality of your life. Whether it be a designating time to indulge in a book, bake a dish, free-write, or play an instrument, this is a time for you to spend it selfishly.

6. Create goals or things to look forward to

Create goals – not a laundry list of things to do.

Curate a list of local events you want to attend on the weekend or make it a goal to run a 5k. Consider your goals to be things that ignite those emotions of excitement, adventure, and fun.

7. Take a moment to slow down.

Shift-work can drain you physically, which means you must listen to your body. Often times, we tend to get lost when we’re on the go. We take our meals our coffees, and even important conversations while we’re constantly up and running. Take some time to breathe and slow down.

8. Setting expectations with your employer

It’s about communicating with your employer and setting those expectations you can realistically meet. Sometimes employees go the extra mile and stay behind after work or they end up picking up extra shifts when needed.

Realistically, are you going the extra mile or are your employers getting too dependent? If so, it’s time to set those expectations.

If you have a family and you need to be home at the certain time, ask your employer to honor it. If there’s a yoga class you’ve been committed to on a weekly basis that keeps you grounded and recharged, stay committed to it.

Setting those expectations can help bring control back into your life.

9. Create a routine

Establishing a set routine can alleviate unnecessary stress. After a long day at work, the last thing you probably would want to be doing is stressing over what daily tasks need to be completed.

Set a designated day for laundry, grocery shopping, and other tasks that need to get done on a weekly basis.

10. Meal prep for the week

Eating healthy is one crucial factor that affects your quality of life, but taking control of what goes into your body gives you that conscious awareness of what you are really consuming.

It’s no secret that meal prepping is no easy task. Instead, think of the benefits it could provide – freeing up mental capacity for the week, builds a healthy and accountability relationship with yourself, and can end up being cost-effective.

11. Do something creative

Even for those who believe they don’t have a creative bone in their body, every single person in the world has a imagination unique to themselves.

Creativity does not always have to come in the form of art, but also in the mess of baking or the rhythm to body when you dance.

12. Surround yourself with nature

When was the last time you stood barefoot on a damp patch of grass after the morning rain or ran your fingers through the soft grains of sand at the beach?

When was also the last time you closed your eyes and listened to the birds chirp or the leaves rustle against the wind?

There’s another world outside of the physical world we live in when we’re at work and surrounding yourself with nature reminds you of that.

13. Reflect

Although shift work can have you bouncing back and forth during odd hours of the day, there’s that opportunity to sit and reflect during these times.

If you work at night, you have the chance to sit and reflect when the world is sleeping, which can actually be the quietest time to clear your mind.

14. Get active

Physical activity is more vital than some people give credit to. Spending a portion of your day to move your body can help get those endorphins going and have you feeling ready to conquer the day or release the tension in your body.

15. Make time for the important people in your life

With shift work, there may be times that you are missing out on many of life’s events that are going on in your inner circle – dinner parties, happy hours, or hiking trips.

The positive thing about working unconventional working hours is that it gives you the time to reflect on the handful of people who are the most important to you and how you want to spend your time with them.

Maybe it’s not about going to dinner parties with your friends from high school that brings you happiness, but meeting up with your gym buddy for a quick run instead. Use your time the way you want and with the people you want to spend it with.

Final thoughts

Although shift work can be emotionally and physically draining, use it as a learning opportunity to get to know yourself. When was the last time you got to dive deep to get to know the person you are and who you have become?

Not everything has to be goal-oriented, and sometimes regaining the quality of your life means exploring the little things.
