Excavators working in the back gardens of homes up and down the country have uncovered a list of ancient relics, giving a sneak peak into Britain’s colourful history. In the last episode of More4’s ‘The Great British Dig‘, the team uncovered William the Conqueror‘s lost priory at Lenton in Nottingham. With it, archaeologists potentially discovered the exact site where Philip Marc, the infamous Sheriff of Nottingham, was buried in the 13th century. Marc has historically been portrayed as one of the worst Sheriffs Nottingham has ever seen. A more villainous version of him directly fought Robin Hood in the short story, ‘The Walnut-Hued Man of Sutton Passeys’ by Jean Rabe. Marc was appointed Sheriff in 1208 during King John’s reign. Sheriffs were not paid by the monarch, instead relying on making money through extortion. Archaeology: The team found bones that could have once belonged to the Sheriff of Nottingham (Image: More4/GETTY) Robin Hood: An antique illustration from the story of Robin Hood (Image: GETTY) In Lenton, a commemorative structure stands in the rough location of where researchers believed Marc was buried, in the general area of the priory. During the programme, however, one of the team’s lead archaeologists, Natasha Billson, suggested that some of the remains found in the excavations could actually have belonged to Marc. Located within close proximity to where the priory would have once stood, Ms Billson explained the jaw bone she was holding, or perhaps some of the other finds, could well have once belonged to the Sheriff. She said this was because Marc had paid a vast sum to be buried right next to the priory, in the belief that the closer he was to it, “the quicker he would ascend to heaven“. JUST IN: ‘Liar and disgrace’ Dr Shola EXPLODES at Piers Morgan attack on Meghan History news: Tash holding the box full of bones uncovered at the site (Image: More4) High-status and wealthy individuals like Marc would have paid large amounts of money to the priory in order to be entombed and buried close to the place of worship. Yet, as the team worked through the site, a huge number of bones and pottery items started to turn up. It proved, they said, that the site’s social makeup wouldn’t have been exclusively inhabited by the likes of Marc and his high-flying colleagues and religious figures. Instead, commoners would also have once lived in near the priory, and were perhaps even buried there. Almost two metres beneath the surface in one of the gardens outside the priory walls, she said the site was full of “pure Medieval pottery, nothing else”, proving a once thriving commoner population was a stone’s throw away from the church. It took the team a long time to find any trace of the priory. A jumble of stones was first found in Terry and Simon’s garden, whose home sat directly above where the priory was illustrated on old maps. Archaeological discoveries: Some of the most groundbreaking finds in England (Image: Express Newspapers) Archaeologist Richard Taylor came across loose rubble, but was at first unconvinced of it belonging to the structure. Medieval stone specialist James Wright was brought in to examine the debris, similarly sceptical as the rocks were not joined and had no mortar between them. However, as Mr Wright noted: “We have got mortar on some of these stones, and it’s been built into a wall at some point, and then been pulled apart.” Mr Taylor then suggested that the pair were talking about the “dissolution” that would have happened as part of King Henry VIII‘s ‘Dissolution of the Monasteries’. Between 1536 and 1541, Henry VIII disbanded monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland. He expropriated their income and disposed of their assets. While the policy was originally envisaged in order to increase the personal income of the Crown, much of what was taken was later sold off and used to fund Henry’s military campaigns in the 1540s. Medieval: Cobbles hailing from the medieval period were also found just outside the pirory walls (Image: More4) Identifying the rock found in the garden, Mr Wright said much of it appeared to coincide with the types of material Medieval craftsmen would have used. Mr Taylor concluded: “What you’re saying is that we’ve got all the ingredients for a priory structure that has been demolished?” Mr Wright replied: “That’s it, exactly.” The rest of the team chipped in and the foundations of the outer priory wall, and an undiscovered lady chapel, were soon established. Dr Duckworth said: “This is exactly what we’ve been looking for, the actual buildings, a part of that building, coming out here and we’ve just caught it in this trench which is fabulous.” You can catch up on all episodes of ‘The Great British Dig’ on All 4. Supernatural baddies beware, there’s a new sheriff in Mystic Falls. Bianca Kajlich (Dawson’s Creek) will recur in Season 2 of The CW’s Legacies as Sheriff Mac, TVLine has learned exclusively. A single mother and career woman, Sheriff Mac stands as “the human line of defense in a town regularly besieged by monsters. Despite a troubled past, she’s willing to open herself up to a new romance when the opportunity arises.” (Executive producer Julie Plec confirms that the sheriff’s name is a nod to Marguerite MacIntyre, who famously portrayed Sheriff Forbes on The Vampire Diaries.) Legacies‘ second season will also introduce us to Leo Howard (Why Women Kill) as Sheriff Mac’s son Ethan, described as a competitive athlete and good-hearted new student at Mystic Falls High School. As previously reported, Ethan’s sister Maya will be played by Bianca Santos (The Fosters). And as Plec told TVLine during our interview at San Diego Comic-Con, both of Sheriff Mac’s children will exhibit feelings for Hope. This law-enforcing family joins a growing list of Season 2 newbies, one that already includes Thomas Doherty (Disney Channel’s Descendants series) as a brooding vampire named Sebastian, and Alexis Denisof (Angel) as an urbane British sorcerer named Professor Vardemus. Legacies returns to The CW with new episodes on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 9/8c. Your thoughts on the show’s newest additions? General hopes for Season 2? Drop ’em all in a comment below. Last week, Cruz shot dead 17 of his former classmates and teachers in his assault rifle rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office published a document on Friday listing all the service calls to Cruz’s home going back to 2008, when he was just nine years-old.
“In the interest of full transparency, we are making available the list of all 23 calls for service at the Cruz home,” the sheriff’s office said. “18 involved Nikolas Cruz. None appeared arrestable under Florida law. However, two of the calls remain under internal investigation.”

The most serious warning came in November 2017, when a caller located in Massachusetts advised that Cruz was collecting knives and was likely to conduct a school shooting. The caller was concerned Cruz would kill himself and “be a school shooter in the making.” They believed that Cruz’s weapons were kept at a friend’s house.
The incident was categorized as ‘suspicious’ by Broward County Police but no report was initiated, according to the document. That call is now under Internal Affairs review and investigation, the document shows.
The first incident, in August 2008, involved a boy throwing a rock at Cruz, who responded in kind. Three years later, in 2011, deputies were called to two incidents of violent or threatening behavior towards his mother. Linda Cruz said the first was perpetrated by Nikolas but did not say if he or his brother Zachary were to blame for the second incident.
In two more reported incidents in 2012, Nikolas fought with Zachary and hit his mother with a plastic vacuum cleaner hose. In 2013, Linda told police Nikolas threw her against a wall because she confiscated his Xbox games console. The following year, he punched the wall after she took away the Xbox again.
Later, in 2014, a neighbor reported Nikolas had shot at his chickens with an airsoft rifle, a replica of a real gun that shoots plastic pellets.
Another ‘suspicious incident’ was recorded in 2016, with third-hand information derived from Instagram that Cruz was going to “shoot up a school.” The Instagram post involved a picture of guns.
On Thursday, Sheriff Scott Israel revealed that the armed deputy assigned to the school had stood outside the building and did not confront the attacker. Deputy Scott Peterson chose to resign over his failure.
Three other Broward County deputies who arrived at the scene also took up positions outside the building, CNN reported on Friday citing sources in the Coral Springs Police Department.
The FBI has separately launched a review of its investigation regarding a tip-off about Cruz based on a YouTube comment. Florida Governor Rick Scott has demanded that FBI Director Christopher Wray resign, after the agency admitted it failed to process a detailed tip-off to its Miami field office.

Betty tracked down a hot lead in the Black Hood case this week in a truly weird and unsettling Riverdale. (And the deeper she dug, the hotter it got.)
Wednesday’s episode was presented in three segments, like an old-school horror anthology, so let’s take ’em one at a time…
YES, FEAR THE REAPER | So the Black Hood has a new demand for the people of Riverdale: He commands them not to sin for the next 48 hours, or he’ll kill again. (It’s kind of like The Purge, but in reverse?) Jughead gets a call from that Serpent attorney, Penny Peabody, who’s calling in a favor: She says the Ghoulies beat up his dad F.P. in the prison shower for that stunt he and Archie pulled at the drag race, and they want payback. Jughead has to pick up a crate — she won’t tell him what’s in it, but it might rhyme with “mingle-mangle” — on the Southside and deliver it to an address in Greendale. He enlists Archie to help him, and they set off in Fred’s truck… and that’s when things get really creepy.
They load up the crate and head towards Greendale, but when their truck blows a tire, an old black guy named Farmer McGinty pulls over to help. (Actually, he demands cash to help, so he’s not exactly a Good Samaritan.) McGinty can only take one passenger, so Jughead volunteers — and he warns Jughead not to look at what’s under the tarp in his truck bed. (Yikes.) On the drive, McGinty listens to talk radio praising the Black Hood, and says the killer is doing “God’s work.” He adds that it reminds him of the Riverdale Reaper. Who’s that now? Riverdale had another serial killer back in the day?
It’s the classic American conundrum: Our First Amendment entitles us to speak our minds, even if others may not agree or appreciate the way we say it. Even if one of those is the sheriff. Or does he have a point?
Karen Fonseca of Houston has a Texas-sized decal in the window of her truck that vividly, if obscenely, expresses her views of President Trump and his supporters. She says she’s received both complaints and praise for it. She also said she’s been stopped a few times by police officers, but they’ve never been able to figure out what to cite her for.
But the whole thing went viral on Wednesday, when Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls posted a photo of the truck on Facebook with a request to speak to the driver. “I have received numerous calls regarding the offensive display on this truck as it is often seen along FM 359. If you know who owns this truck or it is yours, I would like to discuss it with you,” the post read. “Our Prosecutor has informed us she would accept Disorderly Conduct charges regarding it, but I feel we could come to an agreement regarding a modification to it.”
Not clear what the modification would be. Strike the F-word, clearly, but replace it with what? “Fooey on Trump?” “Fork Trump?”
Anyway, Nehls deleted the post after thousands of commenters defending the decal as free speech — though thousands also “liked” the post. A spokesman for Nehls’ office said some commenters had said derogatory things about Nehls’ family.
Nehls later said he supports the First Amendment but simply wanted to talk to the owner.
“The objective of the post was to find the owner/driver of the truck and have a conversation with them in order to prevent a potential altercation between the truck driver and those offended by the message. Since the owner of the truck has been identified, the Sheriff took down the post,” the sheriff’s spokesman for Nehls’ office said.
But Fonseca said she’s been driving with the sticker for almost a year with no concerns for her safety. “I drive it all the time on a daily basis,” Fonseca said. “I’m not fearful. There’s too much positive, and it makes people smile. They honk their horn, they give you a thumbs up.”
A mother herself, Fonseca said she understands why parents might not want their kids to see the foul language, but she points out they see the F-word constantly used elsewhere, such as online. “This is nothing,” she said. “Unless you’re going to put your kids in a bubble, you can’t blame it on your children.”
Ah, but the plot thickened Thursday, or at least it gained a sideshow, when KHOU-TV reported that Fonseca’s husband Mike said she’d been arrested on an outstanding warrant for what court papers said was a fraud charge in Rosenberg, which is in Fort Bend County.
So what’s the legality of all this?
Nehls, in the comments on his post, shared what he said was the legal definition of disorderly conduct in Texas. He said the charge is appropriate for a person who intentionally “uses abusive indecent, profane, or vulgar language in a public place” or “makes an offensive gesture or display in a public place” that “tends to incite an immediate breach of the peace.”
But the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas said Fonseca’s message is protected speech and urged her to reach out to the organization. It pointed to a 1971 U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned the conviction of a man for wearing a jacket with the same expletive protesting the military draft and Vietnam War.
Not all speech is protected, of course. Not yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater is a commonly cited example. But based on that 1971 case, Cohen v. California, the incitement Nehls refers to has to be highly specific “fighting words.”
Nehls maintained in a press conference, shown in the video clip above, that that’s exactly the case here, because the message is an “F— you” to specific people who voted for Trump.
Lynne Rambo, a law professor at Texas A&M University who specializes in the First Amendment, said Thursday that the 1971 Supreme Court case means the state can’t restrict speech over profanity, and that this speech is too broad. The sheriff, she said, “really ought to know First Amendment law better than that.”
Some have accused Nehls of launching a politically motivated attack — or least a publicity stunt. A Republican, he’s considering a run for Congress in 2018.

Bossier Parish, La., Sheriff Julian C. Whittington (above left) isn’t happy with Ford Motor Company’s position on NFL players protesting during the national anthem. Sheriff Whittington wrote a letter to Hixson Ford in Alexandria, La., to inform them that “recent events surrounding the NFL, its players and their audacity to thumb their collective noses at the American flag, the American military, as well as their obvious disdain for the profession of law enforcement in general, forces me to take a stand.” That “stand” means the refusal to purchase any more Ford vehicles after FoMoCo issued a statement on the matter that didn’t condemn the protests.
Last month, President Trump said the NFL should fire players that don’t stand for the anthem. Ford issued two statements in response, the second one saying, “We respect individuals’ rights to express their views, even if they are not ones we share. That’s part of what makes America great.”
In response, Whittington’s letter to local dealer Hixson Ford says, “The Bossier Sheriff’s Office will no longer purchase Ford vehicles as long as Ford sides with those who have no regard for the men and women who protect and serve this great nation.” (One ex-Green Beret and NFL player has a slightly different take.) According to reports, the Bossier Sheriff’s Department purchased 29 Fords from Hixson Auto Group through 2016 and 2017, spending $ 747,132. After posting the letter on the department’s Facebook page, a subsequent post said Dallas L. Hixson replied that “such a stance concerns him as well, and he will be taking the Sheriff’s letter with him to Detroit to present to Ford Motor Co. leadership in the near future.”
Ford hasn’t responded publicly to the matter yet, but the automaker’s in a tough position: The Ford family owns the Detroit Lions, Ford Trucks signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the NFL last year, and Ford Motor Company signed on as an official partner of the NFL.
Whittington addressed his letter to the other 63 sheriff’s departments in Louisiana, as well as to the state, national, and international sheriff’s associations. As for their responses, as of writing, only Sheriff John Ballance of Bienville Parish had answered a query from KTBS, telling the station, “Let’s put it this way … We have one choice in Bienville Parish, and it’s a Ford dealership, and I’m not riding a horse!”

Sheriff Joe Lombardo of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department choked up at a news conference on Friday as he described instances of heroism from his officers earlier this month during the mass shooting that left 58 dead and hundreds more injured.
One of those officers was Brady Cook, who had been working his second shift at the police department on October 1 when the shooting occurred. Cook suffered four separate gunshot wounds to his shoulder, bicep, chest, and back, Lombardo said. Lombardo and undersheriff Kevin McMahill visited Cook and other injured officers on Thursday to check on their conditions.
“The reason why I bring this up is he asked me if he could go back to work today,” Lombardo said.
Lombardo also said he believes the police response that night saved lives by directing the gunman’s attention away from the concertgoers once officers began arriving in their vehicles.
“It is readily apparent to me that he adjusted his fire and directed it toward the police individuals,” Lombardo said. “So the responses of those individuals, I believe, saved lives.”
Another officer Lombardo named was Samuel Whitworth, who broke his leg while he was attempting to help concertgoers escape the shooting. He remained on the scene, regardless, to provide security for medical personnel still working, Lombardo said.
Lombardo also described a group of police officers who helped other first responders triage at least 50 gunshot victims, at one point even using their own equipment to control bleeding when they ran out of tourniquets.
The officers “calmly took care of the wounded and the dying” while they waited for ambulances, even placing people with more serious injuries on the backs of trucks to move them to hospitals more quickly, Lombardo said.
“Not all the victims made it out as the night wore on,” he said. “Those same officers were assigned to guard those deceased victims, not allowing any of them to be alone.”

At a Monday press conference, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo told reporters there were “minute” changes to the original series of events that were given to reporters.
Originally, police said that Jesus Campos, a security guard at the Mandalay Bay, was shot by Paddock as he was opening fire on the concertgoers. However, Lombardo said that investigators have since learned that Campos “was encountered by the suspect prior to his shooting to the outside world.”
Lombardo also corrected earlier accounts that Campos was responding to an alarm from Paddock’s room being open. He said that the alarm was another open door on that same floor.
When Campos reached the 32nd floor, Lombardo said that he heard drilling coming from Paddock’s room. He added that Paddock had not finished drilling, but said that he was probably drilling a hole in the wall to place a camera or a rifle.
When asked about reports of a note found in Paddock’s room, Lombardo said that those were incorrect.
“There was not a note in the suspect’s room. We recovered a document that had numbers associated to it,” Lombardo said, adding that he was not able to make a guess as to why it was found in his room.
Lombardo also stated that Paddock checked into the hotel on September 25, three days earlier than the police previously reported. However, Lombardo said that investigators believe that Paddock was “not occupying the room between those days.”
“We’re trying to confirm his actions between the 25th and the 28th,” Lombardo said.
Police also said that the shooting only lasted 10 minutes, when they previously said it lasted for 11 minutes.
Lombardo said that he believed Paddock was planning an escape route and was going to shoot at fuel tanks below to cause a distraction.
“We know that he attempted to shoot at the fuel tanks. We know that he had some personal protection equipment in the room. We know that the car that was down in the parking garage still contained binary explosives,” Lombardo said. “Depending on the ‘splash’ he made during the shooting, would it enable the first responders to be directing their attention to other locations, which would enable Mr. Paddock to just leave the hotel.”
Lombardo said that the explosives were not set up to detonate with a trigger, but added that police do not know “whether he had planned to cause additional harm outside of what occurred at Mandalay Bay.”
Lombardo said that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has been working on the case with the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (ATF) “around the clock” to uncover the motive behind the shooting, but they are still coming up short.
“This individual purposefully hid his actions leading up to this event and it is difficult for us to find the answers to those actions,” Lombardo said.
Lombardo said that police have found “some evidence” Paddock was taking medication, however, he added that it has not led to a motive.
“A comprehensive picture is being drawn as to the suspect’s mental state, and currently, we do not believe that there is one particular event in the suspect’s life for us to key on,” Lombardo said.
Lombardo reiterated that police have found no evidence to show that there was a second shooter or any evidence that he was “linked or had any affiliation with any known terrorist groups or ideologies.”
“We have uncovered over 200 instances of the suspects’ traveling throughout Las Vegas and he has never been seen with anyone else,” Lombardo said.
There is no evidence to show there was a second shooter. #LVMPD is in contact with the brother of the suspect.#1October
— LVMPD (@LVMPD) October 9, 2017
Investigators are also unsure why Paddock decided to stop shooting.
Lombardo said that authorities are interviewing Paddock’s brother, Stephen Paddock, who was in Las Vegas on Monday. Police are also talking with other family members and his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, about who he came into contact with before the shooting, his movements, gun purchases and “anything else we need to know about him and how he planned his assault.”
“Every piece of information we get is one more piece to the puzzle in this case,” Lombardo said.
The sheriff said that investigators plan to continue working at the Route 91 site and at Paddock’s room in the Mandalay Bay for at least another week, evaluating all the electronic equipment associated with Paddock and other evidence from the scene.
On Monday, the LVMPD announced that the FBI has started to return personal effects that were left behind at the scene of the crime.

“You really don’t understand the magnitude until you see the rows and tables of personal belongings left behind as the people fled,” Lombardo said.
