With the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it’s a wonder that Disney hasn’t forced movie adaptations of every single one of their theme park rides into existence. On the other hand, 2015’s Tomorrowland (not to mention 2003’s The Haunted Mansion) was a sign that not every theme park adaptation is a guaranteed hit, so it’s unsurprising that Disney would tread cautiously.

Enter: Space Mountain, one of Disney’s most popular and long-running rides and the subject of a screenplay by Max Landis. Unfortunately, Landis never got his movie off the ground, and the Max Landis Space Mountain script remains unseen. Well, for the most part — Landis is still pretty chatty about his long-dead project.

In an interview with Screen Junkies, Landis shared the details of his Space Mountain script, which Landis had originally sold to Walt Disney Pictures in 2012. The production was suddenly halted after a few months when it was revealed that Disney had acquired Lucasfilm and were planning on making new Star Wars films — which turned out to be the new series kicked off by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Since Disney now has their own space movie franchise, Landis’ Space Mountain script was grounded. (He’s not hard pressed for work now though, with a potential An American Werewolf in London remake on the way.)

Landis told Screen Junkies that his script was inspired by the old surf music that played on the Space Mountain ride. “I wanted to do a movie where people said ‘gee whiz’ but the stakes were huge,” he said in the video interview:

My Space Mountain movie was cool. It was a ’50s retro future movie. They had rocket ships and ray guns but no cell phones and internet.

He described to the interviewer the rocket ships that traveled “faster than light” on roller coaster tracks, forming the basis for his movie’s conflict:

Another cool thing was the idea that when you come back from light speed, you’re 9 and a half grams lighter but you seem normal. Then slowly over the course of a day, it turns out that the human soul can’t travel at light speed. So whole ships come back with people with no souls who seem normal but then turn into horrible monsters — no wonder this movie didn’t get made.

After the interview was released on YouTube earlier this week, Landis shared some of the concept art from his film.

Like the interviewer mentions, it does sound high-concept — and perhaps a little too ambitious for Disney to turn into a family-friendly film. However, the zombie narrative has only become more popular recently and could have potentially turned into a pulpy and strange space zombies film. My reservations with Landis as a person aside, he’s an adept storyteller and could have created a unique film out of a theme park ride. Plus it’s clear that he has a genuine affection for the ride and Disney theme parks.

It’s the heyday of TV series like Chopped and The Great British Bake Off, so it seems like there’s no better time for a mockumentary film about the lives of quirky small-town cooking competitors.

Ironically, Melissa McCarthy‘s comedy Cook Off! is a movie that has been long in the development oven, originally made a decade ago before being shelved in 2007. Now Lionsgate has picked up the film and re-edited it for 2017 consumption. Hopefully the jokes haven’t expired by now.

McCarthy stars as one of the many hapless contestants of the Van Rookle Farms Cooking Contest, a small-town cooking competition for rookies and amateurs alike. It looks like the competitors are mostly rookies though, as McCarthy struggles to make a meal out of chocolate chips and marshmallows, and one other contestant uses her tears as seasoning.

The film starred McCarthy in her pre-Bridesmaids days as well as Niecy Nash, Diedrich Bader, and McCarthy’s husband Ben Falcone. Other than the aforementioned actors, there aren’t that many huge stars that would date this movie to 2007, but a delay that instantly brings to mind the constantly pushed back Tulip Fever — a film with a production history that ended up being more fascinating than the film itself, even though that one was eventually (finally) released early this month. Hopefully Cook Off! will fare better with both critics and regular audiences, though its scathing portrayal of cooking contestants as nothing more than pageant queens probably won’t play well with the Chopped crowd.

Reality-show shenanigans mix with the true-life fiery-and-fierce world of competitive baking in the deliciously sly mockumentary COOK-OFF! As a buffet of quirky contestants prepare for the renowned Van Rookle Farms Cooking Contest, the heat is on to win a one million-dollar prize. The filmmakers follow them as the foodie media and celebrity judges descend on a hotel convention area to see which contestants rise, which ones fall, who will reveal their true nature, and who will find love with the contest’s costumed Muffin Man mascot. Costarring a cast of improv geniuses including Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone, Stephen Root, Diedrich Bader, Wendy McLendon-Covey, Gary Anthony Williams, and Sam Pancake, the zesty COOK-OFF! is an affectionate nod to ordinary Americans who believe they’re one dollop of spray cheese away from achieving their dreams.
Cook Off is set to hit theaters on November 17, 2017.

Is this week’s The Good Fight picking a fight with a rival network’s hit series?

The CBS All Access legal drama takes aim at Law & Order: SVU this Sunday, basing a case on NBC’s controversial decision not to air an episode of SVU that was modeled on President Donald Trump. In the Good Fight episode, entitled “Stoppable: Requiem for an Airdate,” a TV writer who works for “one of those Chicago shows” leaks an episode he wrote based on Trump after his network refuses to air it, and ends up getting sued by the network. (CBS hasn’t released an official episode description yet, but our sister site Variety has the details.)

The SVU episode in question, starring Gary Cole as a Trump-like politician who’s sued for rape, was originally scheduled to air earlier this season, but was delayed multiple times as NBC executives fretted that they could be painting Trump in a bad light. Then after Trump won the presidential election in November, the episode got shelved and will now probably never see the light of day. (SVU star Ice-T commented this week that the lost episode “wasn’t one of our best.”)

The Good Fight hasn’t been shy about incorporating President Trump into the show: The premiere opened with Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) looking horrified as Trump won the presidency. And this week’s episode title is a sly wink at the lost SVU episode’s title, “Unstoppable.” But the show’s creators insist this isn’t a mean-spirited poke at a competing network. “We didn’t really feel that we were taking shots at NBC,” co-showrunner Michelle King told Variety. “It was very much a generic network, and the fear was that any network or entertainment conglomerate could end up being frightened by this administration.”

To make things even weirder still, Cole is also a cast member on The Good Fight and appears in Sunday’s episode — although not in any scenes connected to the TV writer storyline.
