I used to be categorically opposed to using linen sheets. I thought they were itchy, messy looking, and frankly, antiquated. 

I used to be categorically wrong. I have since seen the light of linen, and I’m here to spread the good word. 

My partner and I both “sleep hot,” meaning we get easily overheated at night — but once I introduced linen sheets into the mix, we both felt their cooling benefits pretty instantly. Neither of us woke up sweaty or uncomfortable after the first time we used them, and we’ve been believers ever since.  

Linen sheets have become our go-to staple for every season — not just when the weather gets warm. In the summer, they stay breathable and cool when I’m otherwise burning hot. In the winter, they keep me from getting sweaty when I’m wrapped up like a burrito in my down comforter. At this point, I don’t know why I ever bothered with sateen or, honestly, anything but linen sheets.

They also wear really well, getting softer with each wash. Linen sheets are basically the Meryl Streep of bedding — a timeless staple that will continue to age gracefully and beautifully over time.

The only thing that took some getting used to was how wrinkled linen gets. It wasn’t so much the sheets that bothered me, it was the linen duvet cover. I was worried our bedroom would look unkempt and uncared-for. But the wrinkles actually created a sort of lived-in aesthetic that I grew to love — one that I now see all over Instagram and Pinterest. This doesn’t matter so much for sheets, assuming you use a blanket over them.

Though linen is notoriously expensive, I can honestly say that it’s worth the cost. These sheets last so much longer than any other kind I’ve used — and I firmly believe in buying fewer, better things. Bedding included.

A viral video is being circulated on the internet of a ghost like presence rustling under a sleeping man’s duvet.

The night vision footage shows the man soundly asleep on his side, as a mysterious object creates a disturbance underneath the sheet.

The video was posted today on video sharing platform Imgur by user MASTINOBIANCO, with the caption: “Paranormal Activity…”.

The rustling of the duvet starts beneath the man’s feet, but quickly moves to the other side of the bed while he remains still.

For a terrifying moment, it looks like paranormal activity is occurring, with the possibility of a ghostly apparition haunting the clueless sleeper.

However, seconds later a cat can be seen at the end of the bed staring at the man, who wakes up and looks at it.

The cat can then be seen crawling around the duvet, before looking straight at the camera, its eyes glowing in the darkness.

the video has been a huge hit among the Imgur community, receiving 426,923 views at last count.

One user saw the funny side of the video, writing: “But if there is a ghost, your cat has your back!”

Another added to the humorous theme in the comments section, writing: “Paranormal Cativity?”

However, others were convinced there was still something spooky going on beneath the covers.

One wrote: “The cat is protecting you from demons or contemplating killing you… Maybe both.”

This isn’t the first animal video to go viral on the Imgur platform. Back in December, a hilarious video showed a dog trying and failing to navigate a snowstorm.

While we are able to brave the cold snow in the correct clothing, it is not the case for all furry four legged creatures.

A chihuahua learned this the hard way as the animal tried to brave the snow despite its legs being too short to reach above the snow’s surface.

The owner playfully drops his dog – who is wearing a green cable knit jumper – into the snow on the ground.

The tiny dog drops right through the surface of the snow, leaving a hole which shows the grass beneath.

Mars clearly had a watery past, and it’s expected that much of the water is still on the planet. Figuring out where the ice is hiding could tell us a lot about the planet’s climate history and something about Mars’ current water cycle. It could also help direct future landers to sample the planet’s water and possibly use it to support human landings.

While we’ve found plenty of ice near the pole during the Phoenix Lander mission, that’s not a very convenient location for future landings (in part because the site ended up frozen over with dry ice during that pole’s Martian winter). In today’s issue of Science, researchers are reporting the likely presence of ice sheets in more temperate regions. The sheets are at least 100 meters thick and appear to preserve layers that may help us reconstruct how the water ended up frozen there.

As with many things Martian, the work relies on data from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It has a variety of instruments that can probe the chemical composition and subsurface structure of Mars, along with the best camera we’ve ever sent to another planet. A recent survey discovered that 36 per cent of people only switched their linen every two to three weeks, while 14 per cent did so even less often.

But doing the laundry infrequently could place you more at risk of illness.

This is because bacteria and fungus can easily spread amongst unwashed sheets, according to a scientist.

If sheets aren’t washed enough, unwelcome life can fester within the folds and wrinkles of our bed linen, according to Philip Tierno, a microbiologist at New York University.

He told Business Insider that sheets should be washed at least once a week because within just seven days the build up of your own microbial life, as well as foreign microbes, can become “significant”.

These include fungi and bacteria that come from your sweat, skin cells, vaginal and anal excretions and sputum.

Additionally, animal dander, pollen, soil, lint and faeces can also accumulate in your sheets.

Recent research showed that feather and synthetic pillows between 1.5 and two decades old can contain up to 17 different species of fungus.

What’s more, the body deposits roughly half a pint of sweat and fluid every night. 

“If you touched dog poo in the street, you’d want to wash your hands,” Tierno told Business Insider.

“Consider that analogous to your bedding.”

Some of the unwanted life that can build up in your bed are dust mites, and a typical mattress was found by Ohio State University to contain between 100,000 and 10 million.

They can increase your risk of getting a cold, as well as suffering from allergies, eczema, hay fever and asthma.

“Even if you don’t have allergies per se, you can have an allergic response,” Tierno said of unwashed bedding. 

This is because you are likely to breathe in the microbes on your sheets which are near your mouth or nose, and this can cause sniffing and sneezing.

In addition to bed sheets, mattresses can harbour bacteria.

A Sleep Council study showed that older mattresses can contain higher instances of staphylococcus, enterococcus, norovirus and MRSA which could lead to serious infections.

These are four ways to keep your mattress protected, according to Fishpools (fishpools.co.uk).

– Flip a mattress, as recommended by the manufacturer, to ensure it maintains its shape and support.

– Try folding the sheets half way down the bed – so it can air – helping to dry out the moisture that dust mites thrive on.

– Vacuum your mattress once a month using the brush attachment paying particular attention to the edges and crevices.

– Replace your mattress every seven years.
