Five speech therapists in Hong Kong were found guilty of sedition on Wednesday for publishing three picture books depicting sheep defending their home from wolves.
The therapists may face up to two years in prison under a colonial-era British law against seditious offenses, which the city's authorities have recently revived to use in tandem with a sweeping new national security law.
Prosecutors said the evil wolves in the books were an allusion to the mainland Chinese authorities while the kind sheep represented Hong Kong residents, according to a judgment published by the courts.
The five defended themselves by saying the books are fables meant to teach universally-celebrated virtues and are open to interpretation, per the court judgment.

However, District Judge Wai Kin Kwok ruled that the books were seditious "not merely from the words, but from the words with the proscribed effects intended to result in the mind of children."
In one of the books, a "Wolf-Chairman" directed another wolf to masquerade as a sheep in an attempt to occupy the sheep village and eat those inside, Kwok wrote in a summary, per court records.
Kwok described the disguised wolf as an analogy for the Beijing-backed Chief Executive of Hong Kong, which he wrote would lead children to view the city's real-life leader with contempt.
Another book, titled "12 Warriors of Sheep Village," appears to reference the 12 Hong Kong protestors who were caught trying to flee to Taiwan by sea in 2020. The book tells the story of 12 sheep who fled their village in a boat but were later captured and brought to be imprisoned in a wolf-run fortress.
Kwok wrote that children who read the book would be "led to believe that the 12 fugitives are victims of oppression and unfair prosecution."
The third book involved a story that Kwok said would lead children to believe Beijing had allowed people coming from mainland China to "make their home dirty and spread the pandemic."
The five defendants — Lai Man-Ling, Melody Yeung, Sidney Ng, Samuel Chan, and Fong Tsz-Ho — have been detained since July last year and were denied bail. All five are below the age of 30 and are due to be sentenced on Saturday.

Human Rights Watch on Wednesday called for the sedition convictions to be reversed.
"Hong Kong people used to read about the absurd prosecution of people in mainland China for writing political allegories, but this is now happening in Hong Kong," said Maya Wang, a senior Chinese researcher for the non-profit group.
"Hong Kong authorities should reverse this dramatic decline in freedoms and quash the convictions of the five children's book authors," she added.
"Concerned governments should speak out against Hong Kong's abuse of the sedition law," Human Rights Watch wrote in a release, urging the governments of Australia, the European Union, and the UK to join the US in imposing sanctions on Hong Kong officials stamping out dissent.

Veteran TV actor Robert Conrad has died, at age 84.
“He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts,” family spokesman Jeff Ballard said in a statement to People.com. No other details were immediately available.
Conrad’s long TV career began with one-shots on series such as Bat Masterson, Maverick and Lawman, before he co-starred opposite Anthony Eisley in the ABC detective series Hawaiian Eye, which ran for four seasons (from 1959-63). A few years later, he headed up The Wild Wild West, science fiction/Western series that ran on CBS for four seasons (and a long while later was turned into a big-budget feature flop by Will Smith).
Next up, Conrad played Major Greg “Pappy” Boyington on Baa Baa Black Sheep, while also costarring in NBC’s Centennial miniseries. His other of many TV credits included A Man Called Sloane, High Mountain Rangers, Jesse Hawkes and High Sierra Search and Rescue. Most recently, he guested on a 1999 episode of Just Shoot Me, though it appears (per IMDb) he has in the can a guest spot on the upcoming Nash Bridges reboot.
Conrad was also, quite famously, a fixture on the Battle of the Network Stars internetwork competition series, often serving as a most intimidating team captain, building off of his reputation as a pitchman for Eveready, where in a series of commercials he dared ya to knock the battery off his shoulder.

Countryfile fans have certainly seen a number of strange goings-on on the the BBC show.
However this evening gave them another shock as they began watching Adam Henson birthing a lamb.
Venturing into his lambing pens, he announced: “Our first block of lambing is in full swing!”
“All of these are pregnant in the pens, but I’ve got one yew who is giving birth now.”
After claiming one lamb to give to another sheep, he noticed the sheep in question was having some trouble giving birth.
He continued: “She needs a little bit of assistance to get the lamb out.”
However Adam also wanted to help one of the stray lambs get adopted, so he wanted to perform what was called a “wet adoption.”
He continued: “Then I want to do a wet adoption, it’s called, so I need to collect the birth waters as the lamb is born – and I’ll rub the lamb in the waters.”
Viewers than sat through the newborn lamb being pulled out of its mother’s womb by Tom.
He began by pulling one leg out, before reaching for the second.
Once the lamb was out, he proudly announced: “The newly born lamb is breathing!”
However fans of the show were a little perturbed by the process, and quickly began speaking out about it on Twitter.
One viewer complained: “Watching a sheep give birth has put me off my strawberry cheesecake #Countryfile.”
Another agreed: “Really don’t know why they showed a lamb being birthed in prime time – when like everyone is having their food. #countryfile.”
While a third concurred: “So glad I’ve just had my dinner #countryfile.”
Recently Countryfile presenter Anita Rani spoke out about why people still watch the show.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk she explained: “I am surprised at how many people love the programme. It’s 30 years old, it’s been going for a long, long time and it’s most successful at the moment.
“I just think people want to switch off from whatever else is going on in the world and on a Sunday night at seven o’clock.
“It’s just the perfect time to have something which taps into nature.”
Countryfile continues Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.

I live with two cats in the middle of Paris in an apartment that’s smaller than 500 square feet, and with a balcony too small to stand on — the closest thing to an outdoor space. But I want a sheep.
Not just any sheep, mind you. I want a Valais blacknose, a Swiss breed with a shaggy white coat, curled horns and, as its name suggests, a black nose. If you’ve ever seen one, it was probably in a tweet with the hashtag #CutestSheepEver. And now the Valais blacknose, which has been bred in the mountains of Switzerland for centuries and lives in Scotland, the Netherlands and Germany, will be an American sheep as well.

“Every time I show someone a photo of the sheep, it’s like a child at Christmas. Everyone wants one,” says Wendy Artzt, who runs the Alabama-based Teton Valais Blacknose Sheep Co. After seeing the Valais blacknose in 2014, Artzt — retired from a Wall Street job and already in the horse game with a ranch of show jumpers — wanted one.
Its personality is more like that of a dog, inquisitive and friendly, and it can be walked on a leash.
So she got one. Or rather, she’ll have one soon. Longtime restrictions on importing ruminants into the U.S. have kept the sheep out of American markets, but the restrictions have recently been relaxed to allow the importation of frozen semen, and Artzt’s farm is the largest importer of Valais blacknose semen in the U.S.
This coming spring, Artzt will have fourth-generation breeding stock — a flock begun with Valais semen and a similar breed of ewe already allowed in the U.S., which means the ewes can be officially registered as Valais blacknose (rams need to be fifth generation).

Sure, you say, it’s the cutest sheep in the world — but it’s still a sheep. Don’t be fooled! Personality-wise, the Valais blacknose isn’t your average sheep — its personality is more like that of a dog, inquisitive and friendly, and it can be walked on a leash. For breeders like Artzt, that’s a huge selling point, especially because Valais blacknose are too expensive to sell for meat. “That would be very expensive lamb chops,” Artzt says, estimating that half-Valais crossbreeds are already selling for about $ 1,000. By comparison, a market lamb in the U.S. is around $ 200 or $ 300.

In Switzerland, Valais are sheared twice a year — their fleece grows about 12 inches annually — and the coarser wool has traditionally been used for carpets and mattresses, Artzt says, adding that Valais fleece has lots of crimp and not as much lanolin as that of other breeds, which keeps the fleece white. “Work with fibers has just gone off the chart globally,” she says, and people are using the fleece for crafts. “Felting as an activity is huge. There are fiber festivals all over the United States,” Artzt says.
Sheep are the fastest-growing hobby livestock in the U.S. — backyard chickens are so 2016 — and looks and personality are likely to count for a lot when people are shopping for a pet that’s also a lawnmower. Bottle-fed lambs tend to think they’re human, which is useful when you have space for only one sheep in the backyard: Though sheep are herd animals, a sheep that thinks it’s a human will assume its herd is you.

On September 22, 1979, US satellite Vela 6911 detected a ‘double flash’ near the Marion and Prince Edward islands in the southern Indian Ocean. Ever since, there have been speculations that it was actually a nuclear weapon test carried out by Israel. According to the memoirs of then-US President Jimmy Carter, this was also the assumption of American generals who briefed him on the incident. The official position of the Israeli state is to neither confirm nor deny having a homegrown military nuclear program.
Now a new paper, published in the Science & Global Security journal, says radioactive isotope iodine-131 had been discovered in the thyroids of Australian sheep in the month following the so-called ‘Vela incident.’
Christopher Wright of the Australian Defense Force Academy and nuclear physicist Lars-Erik De Geer, who used to work for Swedish Defense Research Agency, have analyzed thyroid samples that were sent monthly to the US in 1979. The information on test results was only recently made available to the public under the Freedom of Information Act.
The isotope levels found in the sheep affected by rain four days after the incident, “would be consistent with them having grazed in the path of a potential radioactive fallout plume from a 22 September low-yield nuclear test in the Southern Indian Ocean,” the paper states.
The researchers said that the analysis of weather patterns suggest the fallout plume from a nuclear explosion would have carried over from the test site in the Indian Ocean to parts of Australian territory.
The assumption that a nuclear test took place in 1979 is also backed by the analysis of the declassified “hydroacoustic signal” from US underwater listening devices, the study added.
The research “removes virtually all doubt that the ‘flash’ was a nuclear explosion,” Leonard Weiss, nuclear weapons expert from the Stanford University, wrote in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
He pinpointed Israel as the responsible party because it was “the only country that had the technical ability and policy motivation to carry out such a clandestine test.” According to Weiss, it was just one of several aerial nuclear explosions performed by the Jewish state, which was detected by the US satellite due to an unexpected change in the cloud cover.
Researchers say the Israeli test was carried out in violation of the Limited Test Ban Treaty from 1963, and urge a large-scale international probe of the incident.
Israeli Ambassador to New Zealand Itzhak Gerberg has denied the findings of the research in a comment to the New Zealand Herald, calling them “simply a ridiculous assumption that does not hold water.”

The question – posed to grade five pupils at a school in Nanchong, Sichuan province – asked the students to determine the age of a ship’s captain if there were 26 sheep and 10 goats on his vessel, the South China Morning Post reported. Photos of the test were published by Chinese news portal The Paper.
Anyone with half a brain cell could tell there was no feasible way to answer the problem. But that didn’t stop the students having a crack at it.
Some chose to make a joke of it. “The captain is 36 years old. He is quite narcissistic, so the number of animals corresponds to his age,” one pupil wrote.
Others tried to use at least a little bit of logic. “The captain should be at least 18 years old because a minor is not allowed by law to operate a vessel,” another student wrote.
Then there were those who got straight to the point: “We cannot be sure of the captain’s age. The number of the sheep and goats is irrelevant to the captain’s age,” one said.
The primary school faced understandable questions about what on earth the bizarre question was meant to show. The school said the math problem was aimed at testing students’ critical thinking – adding that there was no right or wrong answer.
“The role of education is not to produce standardized spare parts … Each answer can reflect a different personality. A question that can have different answers is a good question,” it said. The school added that it would continue to use such questions in its curriculum.
It did, however, say it welcomes feedback from the public, even negative. One online commenter wrote: “The question has nothing to do with mathematics … It doesn’t test the pupils’ ability to understand maths.”

From nose to tail, the XT5’s styling is pure Cadillac, sharing the same edgy design theme and 3.6-liter V-6 with the brand’s sedan lineup and more than a few design elements with Caddy’s full-size SUV. But its lackluster driving dynamics don’t match up with the athletic ATS, CTS, and CT6 sedans, and its cabin doesn’t pamper occupants quite like the Escalade’s does, making the XT5 a sort of black sheep in the Cadillac family. While the XT5’s interior design might be considered fussy, it is highly practical and spacious, and it’s filled with plenty of standard high-end infotainment features. While there are more luxurious and better-driving luxury crossovers available from Europe and Japan, the XT5’s unique styling and well-packaged interior might be enough to keep it in the running for some buyers. Welcome to Ars Cardboard, our weekend look at tabletop games! Check out our complete board gaming coverage at cardboard.arstechnica.com.
I admit to a fair amount of skepticism when it comes to most virtual reality applications; I remember hearing how VR was the Next Big Thing back when I was in graduate school—and that was 20 years ago. Even if the technology was further along than it is now, a VR application needs to benefit substantially from a port to the VR setting and the additional features (especially the 360-degree perspective) this allows.
Boardgames do not appear, at first glance, to meet that criterion. If the play’s the thing, then why would it be better to play something in a virtual cabin than through a regular app or at my kitchen table? (I have a good table.)
