RELATED STORIES

CBS’ S.W.A.T. team this Wednesday raced to find former unit leader Buck after he fell conspicuously off the grid and they came to realize he planned to harm himself. As that manhunt played out in flashback, we saw each team member discuss with a counselor the mental and emotional difficulties inherent to their line of work, all the while never quite disclosing Buck’s ultimate fate.

Midway through the hour, Buck (played by Louis Ferreira ) was tracked down via telephone — alive, at a diner, but unwilling to hear out Hondo (Shemar Moore) and put off what he intended to do. Deacon (Jay Harrington), luckily, found his longtime friend and colleague seated by a river bed, handgun at his side. And though Buck seemed quite resigned to end his life, Deacon’s words, as well as those from his successor Hondo and protege Jason Street (Alex Russell), eventually convinced him not to — if only because of the immense sense of loss he would leave friends and family with.

S.W.A.T. showrunner Shawn Ryan, of course, broached this topic during his time on The Shield, where — no spoilers, for anyone mid-quarantine binge — suicide ended the lives of at least two characters.

“I don’t know that we did the research on The Shield that we did on S.W.A.T.,” Ryan shares with TVLine. “Those were stories that we sort of approached from a plot standpoint, but in this case, it really stems from the research we did. For example, I was stunned to learn, as we say in the episode, that more officers die by their own hand than in the line of duty. And I’ve always been fascinated, going back to The Unit, by this mental price that first responders — whether they are in the military or in law enforcement — pay, and the anguish they go through, to do the jobs we expect them to do, to keep us safe.”

Ryan says that S.W.A.T. as a rule affords itself extra prep time “to do things like big stunts, or find big locations that are hard to get” — or, this case, to study a topic like police depression and suicide. To that end, he tasked writer Ryan Keleher to “find out who the right people are to talk to, talk to everyone you need to talk to, and then let’s find out the best way to tell the story.”

SWAT Suicide

As for the tactic that Deacon, Hondo and Street employ to eventually save Buck’s life — essentially making it about them, and the deep loss they would have to live with — Ryan says, “A lot of time these people are feeling so alone and isolated they’re not acknowledging the importance they have in other people’s lives.”

Ryan cites The Bridge, a 2006 documentary about people who have leaped off the Golden Gate Bridge. Among the small percentage who wind up surviving the jump, some have said “almost immediately there was instant regret. Like, ‘I don’t really want to die.’ So the officers talking to Buck really put the emphasis on what this act would do to them and their loved ones, because a lot of people who are in crisis are only considering their own pain.”

SWAT Recap Buck Suicide EpisodeThough Buck will live to see another day, the somber episode was not done serving up stark realities. Because at the very end of the hour, during his one-on-one session with the counselor, Deacon confided, and broke down emotionally in the process, that he similarly has thought about ending it all, specifically at the time last season that his family was in dire financial straits. And with the fact that Hondo was given command of S.W.A.T., instead of him, forever on his brain.

“The Hondo stuff from the pilot, I told the writers I’m never going to let that go,” Deacon’s portrayer, Jay Harrington, tells TVLine. “He took my job — I get to have that. So when we had an episode where I was talking a guy out of shooting himself, and I said, ‘I may or may not have once had a gun to my face as well,’ I pushed for that, and I was glad that they did that as a bit of an Easter egg we could get to someday. And sure enough, here we are.”

How did Harrington get himself to such a place of pure vulnerability? “I tapped into some personal stuff that I’ve gone through,” he shares. “Before S.W.A.T., I hadn’t worked really in a couple of years. Things were tough out there. And I was getting married, bringing someone else into the mix for the first time. [As an actor] there are times when it’s feast or famine, and when it’s famine and you’re by yourself, you’re like, ‘I’ll get by.’ But bringing someone else in… there are pressures that come with that.”

“When we were shooting it, I didn’t know I was going to get emotional, because that’s a tough thing to do, especially time after time after time, take after take…,” Harrington continues. “I just wanted to bring the reality of what we worked on for the Deacon character all these years.”

On a far lighter note, Harrington suggests that in talking to the camera for that first-person reveal, “I was tapping into [his two-season comedy] Better Off Ted, where I would speak right to the fourth wall and break it!”

Moving forward, Harrington says that Deacon’s commitment to ongoing therapy will not go without further mention.

“We have an episode coming up where a uniformed officer on a scene loses a partner, and I sort of take her aside, saying, ‘There are people you can talk to.’ The way they had written it was, ‘I’ve talked to her, and she’s helped me,’ but I asked, ‘Can we change the tense? Can it be, ‘I think I’m getting better’? ‘I think it’s helping me’? Because I didn’t want it to be tied up in a bow.”

Deacon taking that step, Ryan says, represented “one of the main goals with this episode — to show that it takes real strength and courage to say, ‘This is how I’m feeling, this is what I’m contemplating, and I need help.’ You wouldn’t have a problem saying, ‘I have cancer and I need a doctor’s help.’ Your brain is part of your body, and it is something that needs attention just the same.”

WWE RAW PREVIEW: Ronda Rousey in action, Shawn Michaels returns, The Shield update https://briefnews.eu/wwe-raw-preview-ronda-rousey-in-action-shawn-michaels-returns-the-shield-update/ https://briefnews.eu/wwe-raw-preview-ronda-rousey-in-action-shawn-michaels-returns-the-shield-update/#respond Mon, 01 Oct 2018 05:48:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wwe-raw-preview-ronda-rousey-in-action-shawn-michaels-returns-the-shield-update/

WWE’s next overseas show will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia and will stage a series of stunning encounters, such as the final ever battle between The Undertaker and Triple H.

Undertaker and The Game’s storied rivalry will come to an end and the two WWE legends are determined to pull out all the stops as they plan to bring backup Down Under.

Taker will have his scripted brother Kane in his corner whereas WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels will be backing his best friend Triple H from ringside.

Michaels will be appearing tonight on RAW at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington and seems set to address this historic bout once more.

Rumours suggest Undertaker and Triple H will also be part of the show and could get embroiled in an intense segment with The Heartbreak Kid.

RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey will team up with The Bella Twins at WWE Super Show-Down where they will take on Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan of The Riott Squad in a Six Woman Tag Team Match.

Rousey will be in action tonight and will face the opposing team’s leader Riott in a non-title match.

It will be interesting to see in what kind of condition Morgan is a week after suffering a concussion at the hands of Brie Bella.

Brie delivered a series of kicks to The Riott Squad member’s chest during a Six Woman Tag Team Match last week.

However, her last two kicks seemed to have gone a little higher and accidentally knocked out Morgan a week before the big match.

Bobby Lashley will team up with the returning John Cena at WWE Super Show-Down where they will face Kevin Owens and Elias.

Lashley will be in action tonight as he will lock horns with Owens one-on-one.

The Dominator will be looking for some revenge a few weeks after KO launched a savage attack on him and powerbombed him on the ring apron.

Elias will probably interfere but there is no word regarding a surprise appearance by Cena.

Universal Champion Roman Reigns, Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose competed together in a Six Man Tag Team Match for the first time since their second reunion last week.

The Shield beat Acting RAW General Manager Baron Corbin as well as The Authors of Pain but didn’t seem to be totally on the same page.

The Hounds of Justice are scheduled to face Braun Strowman and RAW Tag Team Champions Drew McIntyre as well as Dolph Ziggler in Australia.

Their opponents though tried to play some mind games on the stunning trio when they tried to get Ambrose to turn his back to his brothers.

They claimed that his partners are keeping him down and don’t care about his career or ambitions.

The Lunatic Fringe remained loyal to his friends, nevertheless, but seemed to be paying a lot of attention to his rivals’ words last week.

Shawn Barber just wants to 'jump big bars' again https://briefnews.eu/shawn-barber-just-wants-to-jump-big-bars-again/ https://briefnews.eu/shawn-barber-just-wants-to-jump-big-bars-again/#respond Mon, 03 Sep 2018 16:03:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shawn-barber-just-wants-to-jump-big-bars-again/ It's 10 days before the Diamond League final in Brussels and Shawn Barber is rhyming off his to-do list: Increase runway speed, gain more jump on the takeoff and fine tune elsewhere.

"The only constant in pole vaulting is making adjustments as the season goes," he says. "You have to make sure the changes are in the right direction and beneficial."

The Canadian-born athlete's latest tweaks appear to be paying off as Barber followed up a 5.85-metre clearance in Poland on Aug. 17 — his second-highest of the season — with a jump of 5.83 to finish third at Friday's Diamond League final in Brussels. Barber also set an indoor season-best of 5.86 on Aug. 29 at an exhibition event in Switzerland ahead of the first leg of the Diamond League final at Weltklasse Zürich.

At the main railway station in Zurich, the 24-year-old Barber defeated world No. 1 Sam Kendricks, who finished second at the Diamond League final to Russia's Timur Morgunov, who took home the Diamond Trophy and $ 50,000 US top prize. Barber earned $ 10,000 for his efforts.

Watch Shawn Barber's journey to a 3rd-place finish:

The 2015 IAAF world champion cleared 5.83 metres to finish third in men's pole vault at the IAAF Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium. 0:56

"I've been moving past some problems I had with both my ankles the past couple of months and feel good physically," says Barber, a silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games in April. "In pole vaulting, it's rare when you feel 100 per cent."

Barber attributes part of his inconsistent performances this season — consider his jumps range from 5.40 to a season-best 5.92 — to being forced to borrow poles when his series of Altius carbon fiber models didn't reach flights on time and often arrived after he had competed at multiple events in a short period.

While the 2015 world champion takes pride in his ability to adjust and perform well on borrowed poles, it can test his mental strength.

"I jump on 5.38-metre poles, about 18 centimetres longer than the competition, which uses [a less stiff and heavier] fiberglass pole," says Barber, who will compete at the Continental Cup on Sept. 8-9 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. "The width of the pole always changes, the grip is a little different and that can affect your confidence. Everything adds up to being a little bit cautious when you jump, but if you have the chance to get into a rhythm with your own poles, it'll speak for itself."

New pole

On Wednesday, Barber had his own poles and was the lone member of the nine-man field to clear 5.41, 5.56, 5.71, 5.81 and 5.86 on his first try before attempting 5.91 three times without success.

The recent addition of a significantly stiffer 5.2-metre pole has only fuelled Barber's excitement for what could be achieved in the near future.

"It could put me into a range where I could [envision] some personal bests, performances such as [5.85] and being able to keep up with the people at the top [of the podium]," says Barber, while adding he hasn't gone above and beyond in training to consistently jump above six metres."

Following an international breakthrough in 2012 with a bronze medal at the world junior championships, Barber delivered a series of record-breaking results in 2015 on the NCAA circuit, including a 5.90 jump to win the Texas Relays for the University of Akron in Ohio, where he currently resides.

Barber went on to win gold at the Pan Am Games in Toronto with a vault of 5.80 and on July 25 raised the Canadian mark to 5.93 in London, England. He turned pro with a Nike contract later that year, foregoing his final year of university eligibility, after winning Canada's first world title in track and field in 12 years, in Beijing.

6-metre club

"That's the consistency I want to get back to, being able to jump big bars at all meets," says Barber, who was born in Kincardine, Ont., grew up in New Mexico but calls Toronto his hometown.

In 2016, a 21-year-old Barber broke his own national mark and became the youngest man to join the six-metre club indoors — which doesn't count as a record — at the Pole Vault Summit Reno, Nev.

But later in the year, things began to unravel.

  • In July, Barber tested positive for cocaine at the Canadian championships/2016 Olympic qualifier in Edmonton, where he won and set the Canadian record at 5.71.
  • Barber testified he didn't ingest the cocaine himself, that the drug entered his system as a result of kissing a woman he had met through the "casual encounters" section of Craigslist. Barber's account of the tryst stated the woman, without his knowledge, had taken cocaine before their hotel rendezvous.
  • The Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada sided with Barber, rendering its decision four days before the Olympic men's pole vault final in Rio. Favoured to win a gold medal, the Canadian barely advanced through the qualifying round and finished 10th overall at his Summer Games debut. Barber didn't receive a suspension but was stripped of his 2016 national title.

A favourite to win gold at the Rio Olympics, Shawn Barber struggled mightily in his Summer Games debut two years ago, finishing 10th overall with a clearance of 5.50 metres. (Frank Gunn/Canadian Press/File)

This, after Athletics Canada banned his father, George, from coaching in 2015 after learning of his 2007 criminal conviction on charges of having sex with a student while he was employed at a U.S. high school. Until then, George Barber, who represented Canada as a pole vaulter at the 1983 world championships, acted as his son's coach.

"Just because you're stressed out with a situation in life, you have to find a way to put that behind you and continue jumping as well as you can," says Barber, whose parents divorced years ago. "With family situations and different stressful situations in my past, I've learned to see the positives, move forward and still be able to put on a good performance."

He's more appreciative of the opportunities he has and doesn't want to waste them.— Shawn Barber's part-time coach, Jeff Hartwig, on the pole vaulter's shift in attitude

As Barber's part-time coach, Jeff Hartwig has watched him mature and take ownership of more things in life after becoming overly dependent on his university coaches, including retired Olympic sprinter Dennis Mitchell, who still works with the pole vaulter.

"Obviously, there were some other influences over the last couple of years that caused him some distraction," says Hartwig, a former pole vaulter and member of the U.S. Olympic teams in 1996 and 2008. "To see him get back on track has been great.

Shawn Barber discusses travelling as a pro athlete:

"What I've seen with Shawn, probably over the last year, is a shift in attitude. He's more appreciative of the opportunities he has and doesn't want to waste them. He's the kind of guy you want to see do well."

Barber, whose having a "tremendous time jumping" these days, says a pole vaulter must experience some adversity in order to appreciate when they are in top form.

"At some point, you have to deal with a problem or something," says Barber, who announced he is gay in a Facebook post in April 2017. "I think I'm going through a lot of these problems early in my career and I'm gaining great perspective.

"It's going to lead to better performances and being a stronger, total athlete in the later years of my career."

Canada's Shawn Barber cleared 5.60 metres to finish fourth in the pole vault at the Rabat Diamond League meet on Friday.

Barber, who won the world championships in 2015, is coming off a Canadian championship victory last weekend in Ottawa that saw him set a meet record.

American Sam Kendricks cleared 5.86 to win.

Earlier in the event, a scary incident occurred as Russia's Timur Morgunov narrowly avoided a serious injury.

During his second attempt of 5.86, Morgunov not only failed to clear the bar but his pole ripped straight through his shorts on the way down.

Fortunately, the 21-year-old came away unharmed and was able to complete the competition finishing third.

Brittany Crew of Toronto threw 18.25 metres to finish fifth in the women's shot put in her Diamond League debut. Germany's Christina Schwanitz won with a toss of 19.40.

Matt Hughes of Oshawa, Ont., ran eight minutes 13.13 seconds to finish fifth in the men's 3,000-metre steeplechase. His time was less than two seconds off his Canadian record of 8:11.64 he set in 2013.

Canadian Matt Hughes finished 5th in the IAAF Diamond League Steeplechase with a time of 8:13.13 from Rabat, Morocco 11:29

Kenya's Benjamin Kigen ran a world-leading 8:06.19 to win Friday's steeplechase.

Semenya runs fastest time this year

Caster Semenya produced the fastest time in the world this year for the women's 1,000 metres (yards).

The South African athlete opened up a big lead from the start and eventually clocked 2:31.01.

Coleman's USA teammates Ronnie Baker and Noah Lyles finished in second and third place in Rabat, Morocco. 7:30

The previous best time this year was also set by Semenya when she clocked 2:35.43 in Pretoria in March.

Ce'Aira Brown of the U.S. finished second on Friday in 2:35.85, ahead of fellow countrywoman Kaela Edwards (2:36.13).

Coleman wins star-studded men's 100

Rising American sprint star Christian Coleman won a stacked men's 100 in a photo finish. The 22-year-old clocked a time of 9.98, narrowly edging out his compatriots Ronnie Baker and Noah Lyles by 0.006 and 0.01 seconds respectively.

In the women's 200, it was the Bahamas' Shaunae Miller-Uibo taking the victory with a time of 22.29 seconds. Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith was second (22.40) and Jenna Prandini of the United States was third (22.60).

Miller-Uibo wins the 200m in Tampere, Finland and now qualifies for the Diamond League final. 4:39

‘There’s Someone Inside Your House’: Shawn Levy and James Wan Team For Netflix Slasher Movie https://briefnews.eu/theres-someone-inside-your-house-shawn-levy-and-james-wan-team-for-netflix-slasher-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/theres-someone-inside-your-house-shawn-levy-and-james-wan-team-for-netflix-slasher-movie/#respond Sat, 17 Mar 2018 08:13:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theres-someone-inside-your-house-shawn-levy-and-james-wan-team-for-netflix-slasher-movie/ there's someone inside your house movie

Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy and horror movie extraordinaire James Wan are teaming for an exciting new Netflix project. Levy and Wan will combine their talents to create the coming-of-age slasher movie There’s Someone Inside Your House, adapted from the novel by author Stephanie Perkins. More on the There’s Someone Inside Your House movie below.

A “coming-of-age slasher movie” sounds exactly like the type of film I want to see, and getting James Wan involved in the project is a big plus. Wan has crafted some excellent horror films – The Conjuring, Insidious, and, my personal favorite, Dead Silence. Now Wan will team with Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy and Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment to develop There’s Someone Inside Your House into a new Netflix movie. The film will be adapted from Stephanie Perkins’ novel.

The story involves a teen girl living in Nebraska. Students in her small town suddenly start falling victim to a serious of gruesome murders. Deadline, who broke the story of the film adaptation, say that the There’s Someone Inside Your House movie “is similar in tone to Netflix’s Stranger Things: think 1980s and ’90s slasher movie meets a John Hughes coming-of-age tale like The Breakfast Club.” I will absolutely watch this.

Here’s the novel’s synopsis, via Amazon:

It’s been almost a year since Makani Young came to live with her grandmother in landlocked Nebraska, and she’s still adjusting to her new life. And still haunted by her past in Hawaii. Then, one by one, the students of her small town high school begin to die in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, Makani will be forced to confront her own dark secrets. Stephanie Perkins, bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss, returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.

Henry Gayden, who wrote the script for the upcoming Shazam, is going to handle screenwriting duties for the film.

One caveat: while James Wan will be involved in the development of There’s Someone Inside Your House, Deadline says he’s not directing. That’s a bit of a disappointment, because I’d very much like Wan to return to the horror genre. He’s since branched off into other types of films, helming Furious 7 and the upcoming Aquaman. But I’ll always hold out hope that Wan will stick with horror, since he handles it so well.

Shawn Levy to Direct ‘Crater’, a Sci-Fi Coming-of-Age Film Set on the Moon https://briefnews.eu/shawn-levy-to-direct-crater-a-sci-fi-coming-of-age-film-set-on-the-moon/ https://briefnews.eu/shawn-levy-to-direct-crater-a-sci-fi-coming-of-age-film-set-on-the-moon/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2017 17:28:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shawn-levy-to-direct-crater-a-sci-fi-coming-of-age-film-set-on-the-moon/ Crater movie

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of director Shawn Levy? For many movie-literate fans, the answer is probably the uber-bankable Night at the Museum film franchise. But lately, Levy has earned some Cool Points™ as a producer of Netflix’s mega-hit series Stranger Things, and now it sounds like he’s found a sci-fi coming-of-age story of his own to direct with Crater.

Variety reports that 20th Century Fox has purchased the script for a sci-fi movie called Crater which Levy intends to direct. Here’s their description of the plot:

Crater is described as a coming-of-age story in the vein of Stand By Me, set on a moon colony. After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.

Levy spent some of his early years in the industry directing episodes of shows like The Secret World of Alex Mack, Animorphs, and The Famous Jett Jackson. Say what you will about the guy’s directorial efforts (and hey, I really dig Real Steel!), but with that early work and his work on Stranger Things, he certainly has a good handle on high concept premises involving child protagonists. (He also produced The Spectacular Now, a terrific coming-of-age indie movie from a few years ago.) Crater sounds like it’s very much in his wheelhouse.

The script comes from writer John J. Griffin, and this will mark his first produced project. Griffin apparently did some work on a screenplay for a movie that hasn’t been made yet called Romeo & Juliet: The War, which, frankly, sounds like a godawful concept; however, the good news is that Crater ended up at #5 on the 2015 Black List – a list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year that’s voted on by industry insiders. The original idea for the movie came from a VFX veteran named Rpin Suwannath (most of the X-Men movies, Superman Returns, 2014’s Godzilla), who will now be one of this film’s executive producers.

What do you think about the concept for Crater? Do you envision it being a new favorite for the young adult crowd, or do you think it could have the same level of crossover potential as something like Stranger Things?

Animal Kingdom's Shawn Hatosy Breaks Down Pope's 'Last Stand' https://briefnews.eu/animal-kingdoms-shawn-hatosy-breaks-down-popes-last-stand/ https://briefnews.eu/animal-kingdoms-shawn-hatosy-breaks-down-popes-last-stand/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2017 02:14:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/animal-kingdoms-shawn-hatosy-breaks-down-popes-last-stand/ Warning: There are so many spoilers from Tuesday’s Animal Kingdom in the following interview, it ought to be illegal.

Tuesday’s Animal Kingdom thrill ride was full of turning points: Baz got Smurf busted, J reunited with Nicky, and Marco made Craig and Deran accomplices to a kidnapping that revealed a heretofore-unseen ruthless side of Lucy. But no twists hit harder than Pope’s discovery that his mother had had him murder Catherine for no reason — she hadn’t been ratting out the Codys to the cops — and his subsequent confession to/rejection by girlfriend Amy. Here, Shawn Hatosy, who plays the shattered ex-con, breaks down for TVLine his most intense scenes in “The Leopard” and previews his character’s uncertain future.

TVLINE | Let’s start with Pope’s confrontation with Smurf. It was intense, violent, and was it just me, or was it — as so many of their scenes are — weirdly sexual?
Yeah, it does get weirdly sexual. When he puts his hands on her, [the question becomes] what is he going to do? Is he going to kiss her? We were definitely trying to get at the ambiguity of this relationship. And that goes back to the introduction of the Codys and the toxicity of Smurf’s relationships with each of her sons. She uses that sexuality… kinda like commerce. For Pope, it’s created this bizarre and complicated relationship with sex. So often, when you see him have these violent scenes, specifically with Catherine, it happens at a time when he’s having sex. [In this instance] he’s at the breaking point and barely able to live with himself [having killed her], so when he gets that confirmation from Smurf [that he did it without cause], there’s like this snap.

TVLINE | And yet, for a second, even though she’s the one who set him up to do it, it looked like he was going to let her comfort him! What the hell?
When he hugs her, she’s sort of saying to him without really saying anything, “Hey, you’re my son. I know you. You’re awful and violent and f—ed up, but I’m always going to love you.” For so long, she has created this monster, and even though he’s tried to break free, as we’re coming toward the end of the season, he’s coming back to her and, in many ways, learning that she’s the only one that’s gonna love him no matter what.

animal kingdom season 2 episode 11 shawn hatosy interviewTVLINE | Which might be true, given Amy’s reaction to his confession.
Pope goes against everything he’s feeling right now when he runs to her. But she’s shown him that forgiveness is his way out of this prison he’s put himself in, and he needs that hopeful ending. He needs somebody else in his life that can just look at him as a functioning, normal person. So he reveals his darkest secret, because she’s revealed her darkest secret. And, of course, he’s not going to find any salvation.

TVLINE | Does he realize that he’s risking her life by confiding in her?
I think it’s Pope’s last stand. Well, I don’t think, I know. We’ve been toying with this all season — what is his way out? He’s got this guilt, but he’s also said that he’s not going to let Baz go down for [Catherine’s murder]. I think he’s smart enough to know that if he doesn’t get the forgiveness he needs from Amy, the next step is much darker.

TVLINE | I was surprised — relieved but surprised — that he hadn’t committed suicide by the end of this episode. Where does he go from here?
Going immediately beyond Episode 11, he’s gotta organize his affairs. That’s really what it’s about for Pope [at this point]: Can he live with himself?

TVLINE | If only he hadn’t blabbed to Amy! I was ’shipping them big time.
I’m actually quite happy with the way that [the writers have developed] Pope from Season 1 to Season 2. After the awful things he did, I wasn’t sure that the audience would be able to kind of come around on him. But he and Amy both have this quality where they’re both so damn wounded that you just wish that they were in Idaho someplace in a church and that these circumstances weren’t around them. If not for his bad behavior in society, I think they could be, ultimately, a very successful couple.

Shawn Barber fails to defend pole vault world title https://briefnews.eu/shawn-barber-fails-to-defend-pole-vault-world-title/ https://briefnews.eu/shawn-barber-fails-to-defend-pole-vault-world-title/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2017 23:44:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shawn-barber-fails-to-defend-pole-vault-world-title/

Consistency, which has plagued Canadian pole vaulter Shawn Barber throughout the season, was a problem again in Tuesday’s men’s final at the track and field world championships.

The 23-year-old Toronto resident failed to defend his 2015 world title (5.90 metres) and finished eighth after missing all three attempts at 5.75 at London Stadium. Barber cleared 5.65 on his third and final try after achieving 5.70 on Sunday to secure his spot in the final.

“There’s pressure to compete and do well and get a medal,” Barber told CBC News. “It just wasn’t my meet, wasn’t meant to be.”

Barber “didn’t look sharp, fast or technically consistent,” compared to his winning performance at worlds two years ago in Beijing, according to CBC Sports analyst Dave Moorcroft.

He flirted with disaster on Tuesday, missing the first attempt at 5.50, 5.65 and 5.75 before rebounding on the second try at 5.50 and third and final attempt at 5.65.

“It is so important to clear the early heights first time,” added Moorcroft, “but the signs weren’t good when Shawn failed [at 5.50].

“He’s still young, has huge talent and is a proven competitor. The next few years will be crucial if he wants to be a medal contender at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”

A month ago, Barber’s agent and co-coach Jeff Hartwig was confident greater success awaited the pole vaulter, whose personal best is 5.93.

Sam Kendricks of the United States was clean through the first five jumps and later was the only one to scale 5.95 to win gold. Piotr Lisek of Poland took silver with a jump of 5.89, edging world-record holder Renaud Lavillenie of France on a countback.

Hughes runs season best in steeplechase

Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya overcame recent ankle soreness, following up his 2016 Olympic title in the men’s 3,000-metre steeplechase with a victory in the world championship final, crossing the line in eight minutes 14.12 seconds.

“I told myself: ‘I am Olympic champion,’ and that others must break me,” Kipruto said. “There are others who are strong but I used my own plans.”

Evan Jager finished third in 8:15.53 in his bid to become the first American to capture a world championship medal.

Matt Hughes of Oshawa, Ont., was sixth in a season-best 8:21.84.

Kipruto put forth an unmatchable kick over the final 300 metres, leaving him enough of a gap to celebrate exuberantly down the final stretch, finishing .37 seconds ahead of bronze medallist Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco.

Kenyan or Kenyan-born runners have won the steeplechase at the world championships and the Olympics every time since 1987.

McBride fades in 800 final, finishes 8th

Fresh off his victory in the men’s 800-metre heats on Sunday, Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ont., led midway through Tuesday’s final before fading and finishing eighth in one minute 47.09 seconds.

The 23-year-old grabbed the lead early and posted a 200 split of 24.15 and 50.76 after 400 metres.

On July 21 in Monaco, McBride ran a season-best 1:44.41 at a Diamond League meet to inch closer to Gary Reed’s Canadian mark of 1:43.68. McBride placed 14th at the Rio Olympics last August.

Frenchman Pierre-Ambroise Bosse won Tuesday’s race in a season-best 1.44.67, followed by Adam Kszctot of Poland in 1:44.95 (season best) and Kipyegon Bett of Kenya in 1:45.21.

Watson into 400 hurdles final

Sage Watson of Medicine Hat, Alta., stopped the clock in 55.05 seconds to qualify sixth for the women’s 400-metre hurdles final on Thursday at 4:35 p.m. ET. She ran 55.06 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals.

Watson, who finished 11th at the Rio Olympics last summer in 55.44, has her sights set on the Canadian record of 54.39, set by Rosey Edeh — now a Canadian television personality — at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

In June, Watson won her first NCAA Division I title running for the Arizona Wildcats by clocking 54.52, nearly a full second ahead of her closest competitor.

Emmanuel through to 200m semifinals

Canadian-record holder Crystal Emmanuel of Toronto placed seventh among the 22 qualifiers for the women’s 200-metre semifinal on Thursday at 4:05 p.m. ET by finishing second Tuesday in her heat in 22.87 seconds.

Emmanuel, 25, shattered Marita Payne-Wiggins’ 34-year-old record in the 200 (22.62) last month in Ireland.

Earlier this week, she matched her personal best in the 100 (11.14) but finished fourth and didn’t qualify for the final.

Emmanuel repeated as a double gold medallist at the Canadian championships in early July, clocking 11.20 and 22.55, respectively, in the 100 and 200 at Ottawa.

Defending champion Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands set the early standard in the 200 heats, jogging across the line and still winning in the best qualifying time of 22.63. Olympic champion Elaine Thompson of Jamaica is not competing in the 200 this week.

Crew cements spot in shot put final

Brittany Crew of Mississauga, Ont., has advanced to the women’s shot put final on Wednesday at 3:25 p.m. ET after her throw of 18.01 metres qualified her eighth among 12 competitors on Tuesday.

“An excellent performance, in particular having to pull out the 18.01 result on her third throw with pressure on her,” said Moorcroft.

The 23-year-old entered the world championships having met the world qualifying standard of 17.75 six times, including her throw of 18.32 to win at the Canadian championships in July.

On May 20, Crew improved on her national record with a throw of 18.58 in Tucson, Ariz. Two days earlier, she broke Julie Labonte’s mark of 18:31 that stood since 2011. Crew finished 9th in her qualifying group at the Rio Olympics.

“She could realistically hope to get close to her Canadian record,” Moorcroft said.

Liz Gleadle 12th in javelin

Two days after saying “anything can happen in a final,” Vancouver’s Liz Gleadle finished last in Tuesday’s 12-women javelin final — her result in the 2012 Olympic final in London — with a best throw of 60.12 metres after throwing 62.97 in Sunday’s semifinals.

A poor third attempt measuring 58.36 wasn’t enough to keep the 28-year-old in the top eight after three rounds to continue.

Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic won the gold medal Tuesday with a throw of 66.76. The Chinese pair of Ling Wei Li (66.25, personal best) and Huihui Lyu (65.26) took home silver and bronze, respectively.

In July, Gleadle shone at London Stadium with a throw of 64.47 to threaten her Canadian women’s record of 64.83, set May 10, 2015 in Kawasaki, Japan.

“She will know that it is an opportunity lost as 65 metres is within her grasp and the bronze was won [by Lyu] with 65.26,” said Moorcroft of Gleadle, the 2015 Pan Am champion. “But at 28, time is on Liz’s side to bounce back and challenge for top-six at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”

A two-time Olympian, Gleadle’s best of 60.28 was good for 16th at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Van Niekerk breezes to 400m title

Wayde van Niekerk successfully defended his world title in the 400 metres, adding to his Olympic gold and world record. The South African, running in Lane 6, paced his race perfectly and even eased up at the end to cross in 43.98 seconds.

Silver medallist Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas was .43 seconds behind and Abdalelah Haroun of Qatar finished in 44.48 for bronze. Medal favourite Isaac Makwala of Botswana was kept out of the race because of a stomach virus even though he insisted he had fully recovered.

Canada’s Shawn Barber will get the chance to defend his world pole vault title after advancing to the final on Sunday at the IAAF track and field world championships in London.

Barber’s successful attempt at 5.70 metres sealed his spot in the final.

Joining Barber in the final are 11 other competitors, including Renaud Lavillenie of France, American Sam Kendricks, and the youngest pole vaulter to appear in a world championship fina, 17-year-old Swede Armand Duplantis.

Hughes moves on

Canada’s Matt Hughes is through to the steeplechase final, finishing in 8:24.79.

Evan Jager of the United States was the top qualifier and is trying to break the 30-year stranglehold of Kenyan and Kenyan-born runners on the event.

Jager was in control all through and finished in 8:20.36 seconds. The top Kenyan in Jager’s heat was fourth and Ezekiel Kemboi, a four-time world champion and two-time Olympic champion, qualified only as one of the fastest finishers outside the three automatic qualifying spots.

The last runner who was born outside Kenya to win was Francesco Panetta of Italy at the 1987 world championships in Rome.

Cabral continues

Canadian hurdler Johnathan Cabral advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 110m hurdles, scoring a qualifying time of 13.53. American Aries Merrit led all qualifiers with a time of 13.16.
