Dick, 61, and his wife Angel, 42, moved to France with their young children Arthur and Dorothy almost five years ago to begin a restoration project on a medieval castle. Escape to the Chateau viewers have seen the couple transform their new home from rags to riches on the Channel 4 programme and they have recently published a book about how they coped in the first year of their renovation. However, teasing their fans of what was included in the book, the mother-of-two had to warn her husband to stop talking about his undergarments – or lack of.

In a video published on the couple’s website, they are seen unpacking a box which contains one of the first editions of their book.

As Dick is seen opening up the parcel, he notices both his children are wearing t-shirts with the ACDC logo sprawled across the front.

Angel then joined in as she told her husband: “I’ve got it on my knickers,” to which the father-of-two explained he had gone “commando” so it “didn’t matter”.

With the conversation turning intimate in front of their children and fans, the Chateau owner warned her spouse not to reveal any more.

“Stop, stop! No more talking,” the mother-of-two declared, before turning the discussion back to the book.

Since the book was published in October last year, thousands of avid readers have got their hands on the couple’s renovation secrets.

The couple detail how they found their new home infested with flies and bats after moving from their two-bedroom flat in Essex in the midst of winter.

“Along the way, we’ll read glorious descriptions of rural life in France, with charming characters, delicious food and wonderful seasonal produce,” the synopsis reads.

“Together with the extraordinary list of renovations and restorations Dick and Angel completed, many of which were not shown on TV.”

Dick said of his wife Angel: “Angela is an alpha lady. We were introduced in 2010 by our shared agent — she is an entrepreneur and designer — who saw we were both efficient and organised, so well suited.

“Now we work and live together in France at Chateau de la Motte Husson, which we bought five years ago for £280,000.

“Renovation was hard work, but Angela learned fast and always looks gorgeous,” he said in a column for the Daily Mail.

The Chateau owner explained how his wife managed to knock down a wall to make two rooms into one and was climbing the scaffolding to get the job done.

At the end of the day, Dick described what he and Angel get up to once they’ve put their children to bed for the night.

As well as looking at their laptops for one final time, the couple share a glass of wine and talk about their day.

However, the father-of-two admitted his role as an engineer has led him to find a “solution to everything, everything except women.”

Orban, a harsh critic of migration and mandatory migrant quotas, has repeatedly cast doubt on the validity of migrants’ humanitarian plight.

Speaking of illegal migrants, Babis stated that Prague “won’t accept a single refugee,” even if they are Syrian orphans. “Why should we accept [Syrian orphans]? We have orphans in our own country… I went into politics mainly to take care of Czech citizens,” he added.

He also recalled talking to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. “She asked me if we [Czech Republic] could take a few illegal migrants. I said we could not even take one,” he said, adding that his reply was “a symbolic attitude to the inability of the EU” to address the problem of migrants. Babis was apparently referring to his recent meeting with Merkel earlier in September.

In December 2017, the Czech Republic, along with Hungary and Poland, defended their “right” to reject EU-imposed refugee quotas amid pressure from the European Commission. Despite repeated EC warnings, the three countries continue to pursue a course of non-compliance, arguing that migrants pose a direct threat to public security.

Babis, who took the post back then, said that “the quotas divide Europe and they are not effective.” 

The Czech PM has repeatedly criticized existing EU migration policies, and argued that European states must “unite” to come up with a viable solution to the crisis. Referring to the notorious standoffs between anti-migrant protesters and anti-fascists in the German city of Chemnitz, he said that Europe must fight for its culture and values in the face of the migration crisis.

“We don’t want to live in Africa or the Middle East here. We must fight for our values,” he said.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has vetoed a bill that stood to damage peer-to-peer car sharing companies like Turo, GetAround and Maven. The bill was passed by the state legislature in May and would have applied the same state and local taxes big rental companies like Avis or Hertz have to pay to the individuals that rent out their vehicles on the car sharing platforms. Those include a five percent tax as well as local taxes of up to 20 percent. While the bill didn’t initially include such stipulations, Ars Technica reports that industry lobbyists pushed for the changes late in the process.

“There are meaningful and direct benefits to car sharing that Illinoisans will enjoy at every level; it will reduce congestion, lower the strain placed on scarce parking space inventory and it will make it easier for people to afford vehicles while simultaneously lowering the cost of transportation for those who cannot afford full-time car ownership,” Rauner wrote in his recommendations for changes to the bill. “Oversight of this new industry is important to protect consumers; however, we should be careful not to unintentionally smother its growth before it has a chance to get off the ground.” He also noted that the changes were made without allowing for public input or debate.

Critics of the bill have said that an Illinois resident who wants to occasionally rent out their car when it’s not in use shouldn’t be subject to the same taxes as major car rental companies. They’ve also pointed out that those companies receive tax breaks that individuals wouldn’t get and that peer-to-peer rentals aren’t exempt from sales tax like rental car companies are.

“It’s easy for even an active follower of tech and startups to think that the constant marginal progress we see is automatic,” Mischa Fisher, Governor Rauner’s chief economist, told Ars Technica. “But what nearly happened in Illinois is a reminder that the legal rules matter, and if we want to have competitive marketplaces that produce new goods and services in any state, we don’t want incumbent players authoring their competitors’ rules without any oversight or feedback.”

Car sharing companies voiced their support for the veto, but the car rental industry isn’t so pleased. “Why the Governor would veto bipartisan legislation that exempts peer-to-peer car rental providers from basic requirements is beyond comprehension,” Enterprise Rent-A-Car told Ars Technica. “Ensuring vehicle safety, offering transparent pricing and collecting essential state and municipal fees is just common sense. If peer-to-peer doesn’t pay taxes or fees, cities/municipalities will have to find ways to make up for lost revenue. That will only hurt local businesses and citizens while peer-to-peer companies get a free pass. We are confident the legislature will right this wrong.”

The governor added that a number of other regulations put into place by the bill, such as font size requirements, real estate design rules and human inspection of drivers’ licenses, don’t work with the car sharing model. His recommended changes now head back to the state legislature, both chambers of which passed the bill by strong majorities.

Scoot is getting into bicycles. The company known in San Francisco for its red electric scooters populated by riders with lightning bolt-emblazoned black helmets is adding bikes to its lineup. But not in San Francisco. Instead, the company is opening its first international location in Barcelona where it’ll drop 1,000 electric bikes and 500 scooters on the streets of the Spanish city.

During a meeting with Scoot CEO Michael Keating, he made a point to note that the company is working closely with Barcelona for the rollout. It’s done the same in San Francisco over the years, and considering the blowback associated with electric push scooters in the Bay Area, the company is taking what it’s learned from its San Francisco relationship and applied some of it to Spain.

“In Barcelona they are similar to San Francisco in that they are both cities that are very progressive in their values but also very protective in how their streets are used and how their city is preserved,” Keating said. “There’s a cautiousness that exists in both cities and also an aspiration to be greener and offer people more alternatives to driving.”

The people of Barcelona will be able to use the Scoot app to rent either a scooter or electric bike for one way travel. The scooters will be built by Spanish company Silence and because the laws for riding a two-wheeled vehicle in the European nation without a motorcycle license are different to California, the vehicles will be quicker and have a higher top speed than the Genze scooters distributed in San Francisco.

The power difference was immediately noticeable when I took off on the Silence scooter during a test ride. I also had a chance to ride the electric bike. It’s a comfortable, pedal-assisted ride that the company will be dropping in Barcelona, but don’t expect to see these bicycles in San Francisco anytime soon.

San Francisco already has a deal with Ford’s GoBike system and free-floating sharing system, Jump bikes (which was recently acquired by Uber). Basically, no other bike share is allowed to operate in the city besides those two companies. At least for now.

“That was a big disappointment to us. We actually would have brought half of our bicycle fleet to San Francisco and half to Barcelona,” Keating said.

The bikes that will be deployed, while still painted in Scoot’s matte red, but will also have fairings designed by a Spanish muralist. It’s apparently part of the company’s desire to be part of the community.

This is just the start, however, and the company has plans to expand to more cities in Western Europe and in the America’s by next year.

While bikes, scooters and push-scooters seem to everywhere in places like San Francisco, the car is still the number source of transportation. That’s not going to change anytime soon, but Keating wants to make sure Scoot is there to offer alternatives. “There’s just a lot of room to improve the experience of getting around the city.” He added, “it’s a crazy time to be in mobility.”
