Maria Sharapova got out of the Melbourne heat as quickly as she could, needing just 63 minutes to beat British qualifier Harriet Dart 6-0, 6-0 in the first match on Rod Laver Arena at this year's Australian Open. Sharapova, who wore an ice collar during breaks to help alleviate the 30 C temperature, was making her 15th appearance at the season-opening major. The only break point Sharapova faced was when she double-faulted in the fifth game of the second set. Dart, who described Sharapova as her idol before the match, lost in the first round at Wimbledon last year after being given a wild card in her only previous Grand Slam singles appearance. The 22-year-old Dart had a game point on her serve in the eighth game of the match, but Sharapova rallied to break the British player and continue the rout. Another British player, Heather Watson, also lost early on day one, beaten 6-1, 6-2 by 31st-seeded Petra Martic. Rafael Nadal wasn't about to let another Australian wild-card entry beat him at a Grand Slam tournament. The Spanish left-hander beat No. 238th-ranked James Duckworth 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, his 15th win in 17 matches against wild cards at Grand Slam tournaments. Nadal's only previous defeats to wildcard entrants at majors were against American James Blake in the third round of the 2005 U.S. Open and Australian Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2014. Nadal advances to Australian Open 2nd round with straight-set win: Nadal, wearing a sleeveless top, did an extended left-arm celebratory pump after breaking Duckworth's serve after two cross-court stunners to lead 4-2 in the third set. His only stumble as he served for the match and was broken by Duckworth, who got back to 5-4. But Nadal returned the favour, breaking the Australian in the final game of the match. Nadal has only lost twice in the first round at Grand Slams — to Steve Darcis at 2013 Wimbledon, and to Fernando Verdasco at Melbourne Park in 2016.
Nadal moves on
The Spaniard’s power exposed Sharapova’s stilted movement in a 6-2 6-1 hammering on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The 2016 Roland Garros winner and reigning Wimbledon champion swatted a modest 10 winners and two aces, while restricting her unforced error count to just 15.
Pressure was the right-hander’s most potent weapon, drawing 27 unforced and 20 forced errors from Sharapova.
The 70-minute defeat was Sharapova’s heaviest in Paris since a 6-0 6-2 flogging at the hands of Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in the 2009 quarter-finals.
The victory leaves Muguruza in the hunt to unseat Simona Halep at No 1.
Muguruza will play either Halep or Angelique Kerber in the semis for a place in Saturday’s final.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was set to take to the court to face arch rival Maria Sharapova on Philippe Chatrier today.
But the American was struggling with injury and she dramatically pulled out less than an hour before the match was due to start.
A press conference was immediately called where Williams revealed all on the problem that was forcing her to quit.
Williams will now have an MRI scan on Tuesday to discover the full extent of the problem with the possibility of her playing Wimbledon on a knife-edge.
An emotional Williams said: “I unfortunately have been having some issues with my pec, my pec muscle, and it has been getting worse to the point where right now I can’t actually serve. It’s kind of hard to play when I can’t physically serve.
“It didn’t start before I got here. The first time I felt it was against Goerges in my last match. That’s when I started to feel it. I was, like, it was really painful and I didn’t know what it was.
“In my doubles yesterday I tried a lot of different tapings, and I tried lots of different types of support to see how it would feel under match circumstance. It didn’t really get a lot better.
“I’m beyond disappointed. I gave up so much, from time with my daughter to time with my family. I put everything on the court, you know. All for this moment.
“So it’s really difficult to be in this situation, but I always, for now in my life, I just always try to think positive and just think of the bigger picture and hopefully the next events and the rest of the year.”
There were signs all was not well during Serena’s doubles clash with sister Venus yesterday where service speeds were noticeably down.
The news has taken everyone around Roland Garros by surprise. Earlier Serena’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou had insisted the America was ‘close to being 100 per cent fit’.
There are now fears Williams, who was playing her first Grand Slam since giving birth daughter Olympia, could be set for an extended time on the sidelines.
She said: “I’m going to get an MRI tomorrow. I’m going to stay here and see some of the doctors here, see as many specialists as I can. And I won’t know that until I get those results.”
This is the first time Serena has every withdrawn from a Grand Slam tournament.
“It’s very difficult, because I love playing Maria,” she added. “It’s just a match I always get up for. You know, it’s just her game matches so well against mine.
“It is difficult, because like I keep saying, I have given up so much to be here. You know, there is times where I’m on the court and I’m practicing, and I look on the monitor and I see my daughter and she’s playing and I want to be there, but I know that these are the sacrifices you have to make to live out your dream.
“And I have made every sacrifice that I could. So it’s extremely disappointing. But also, I made a promise to myself and to my coach and to my team that if I’m not at least 60% or 50%, then I probably shouldn’t play.
“The fact that I physically can’t serve at all is a good indication that maybe I should just go back to the drawing board and stay positive and try to get better and not get it to a point where it could be a lot worse.”

Federer is due to take on one of his “bunnies” on the tour – he has beaten Richard Gasquet 16 out of 18 times and has never lost on the hard court to the Frenchman. Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics awaits the winner in the fourth round.
But they will have to wait for their moment on Rod Laver Arena, with the organisers scheduling a mouth-watering women’s match first with Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova running into each other.
Sharapova is a “dangerous floater” in the draw thanks to her lowly ranking after a 15-month doping ban for a negative test here in Melbourne two years ago. The Russian leads her head-to-head with the former world No 1 4-3 but has not beaten her since 2013.
And Djokovic, also under-represented by his No 14 seed, will likely be given his toughest test since elbow surgery by Albert Ramos-Vinolas in their third-round clash.
9.25am: It’s all happening on Margaret Court. Djokovic spends five minutes on the floor with the trainer apparently trying to loosen up his back but getst back up again – and promptly breaks and holds to take a 4-1 lead in the second set. His movement doesn’t seem perfect but he is hitting the ball so sweetly, it hardly seems to matter.
Back on RLA, Sharapova has been broken again to trail in the second but she’s back immediately and it’s 2-2.
9.10am: A third break and the first set to Kerber. Sensational stuff! 6-1 she takes it.
8.55am: First blood for Djokovic over on Margaret Court. The Serb has looked pretty flawless since his return – but Ramos is going to push him. Djokovic saved break points in his second and third service games but then broke to lead 4-2, converting his seventh opportunity of the set.
And the former world No 1 has broken again to seal the first 6-2.
Sharapova meanwhile is deep trouble. She’s trying to bring the power to counter Kerber, but the German is firing everything back with interest! She now has a double break and leads 4-1 in the first serve.
8.45am: Worst possible start for Maria Sharapova. The Russian is broken in the first game of the match and Kerber consolidates with confidence. After the miserable year she had in 2017, it’s quite nice to see the former world No 1 playing with some swagger again. She is playing off her lowest seeding in six years but looks a far better player than world No 16 right now. Leads 2-0.
8.30am: Over on Hisense (Melbourne Park’s third court), it’s a bad start for Juan Martin del Potro. He’s lost the first set 6-3 and has been broken in the very first game of the second.
Then again, when does Delpo ever do it the easy way?
Djokovic and Ramos are still on serve, three games in.
8am: Right. I think we’re all caught up on Zverev now. That was a spectacular captiulation from the 20-year-old. Not good.
Let’s catch up on overnight. Simona Halep proved why she is world No 1, overcoming Lauren Davis in nearly FOUR HOURS. It took the Romanian, carrying an ankle injury, 227 minutes to beat her American opponent 15-13 in the third.
And Australia lost their last representative in the women’s singles, Ashleigh Barty beaten in straight sets by Naomi Osaka of Japan.
Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, Dominic Thiem conserved plenty of energy, beating Adrian Mannarino in three, while Fabio Fognini went the distance to win against Julian Benneteau.
Finally, Marton Fucsovics could Roger Federer in his first ever Grand Slam fourth round – the Hungarian beat Nicolas Kicker in three sets.
7.45am: There it is. After a couple of tantrums, Zverev has been beaten in five sets and walks off Rod Laver with a few boos ringing around. He completely went to pieces in that final set. That’s the end of the day session.
We’ve got Sharapova and Djokovic both due on at 8am – or just after. More drama to come, no doubt.
7.40am: Morning! I’ll give you a little round-up of the night’s action in a moment but first there is a big story developing: world No 4 Alexander Zverev is about to crash out to 21-year-old Hyeon Chung, who is serving for the fifth set at 5-0.
More as it happens…
Sharapova earned a hard-fought 7-5 7-6 victory over her 19-year-old Belarusian opponent to win her first title since her return in April of this year, and her first WTA tour victory since May 2015.
The Russian five-time Grand Slam champion was made to battle hard for the victory, fighting back from 4-1 down in both sets before overcoming the young Belarusian.
After the win, Sharapova said it was a “special” moment considering it had been such a long wait since her last title.
“It is a special title, a special victory,” Sharapova said, wtatennis.com reported.
“It has been a couple of years since I have held the winner’s trophy. It is a great feeling, a team effort,” she added.“You have to appreciate those moments, never take them for granted.”
Sharapova went into the tournament – for which she was given a wildcard entry – ranked 86th in the world, but now climbs to number 57.
It was the 30-year-old Russian’s 36th WTA tour victory.
Sharapova returned from a doping ban in April of this year, having been suspended after testing positive for banned substance meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.
The Russian said she had been taking the drug for 10 years on the advice of a family doctor, and had overlooked the fact that it had recently been added to the list of banned substances.
Her initial ban was shortened from two years to 15 months on appeal.
She missed the French Open earlier this year after being refused a wildcard by tournament organizers, and was forced to miss Wimbledon through injury. She was granted a wildcard to the US Open in late August-early September, but went out in the fourth round at the hands of 16th-seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Sharapova will be boosted by her win in China, and will next turn her sights on her home Kremlin Cup tournament in Moscow, which begins next week.
“I am really looking forward to playing in my home country as the last event of the year,” Sharapova said, according to wtatennis.com
“Obviously coming there with the title already means a lot, but I do really want to finish strong, even though it is a very fast turnaround, and I don’t remember the last time that I played three events in a row. But I will give it everything I have got and I know I have so many amazing fans there.”

MARIA Sharapova’s grand slam return after a 15-month doping ban has ended in the US Open fourth round with the former world No.1 losing to Latvian 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova.
The 30-year-old Russian star, whose five Grand Slam titles include the 2006 US Open, fell 5-7 6-4 6-2 to Sevastova, who booked a Tuesday quarter-final matchup against American Sloane Stephens.
Sharapova, who returned to the tour in April after her suspension ended, had defeated world No.2 Simona Halep in the first round and was being spoken about as a potential title contender.
But despite pocketing the first set, her challenge fizzled out when she needed a medical timeout to treat a blister on her right hand.
She finished with 42 winners but 51 unforced errors against Sevastova, who also made the quarter-finals in 2016.

“Playing on Ashe stadium is an amazing atmosphere, every time. It’s fun to play here,” said 27-year-old Sevastova, who took victory on a fourth match point when Sharapova pushed a service return wide.
“The first set was very close. It could have gone either way. She played unbelievable throughout the first and second set and I just kept fighting, running for every ball.
“The emotions were high when I was 5-2 up in the final set. I wanted to close it so much.”

]]>Maria Sharapova battled back from a set down to claim victory in her second round US Open match against Hungary’s Timea Babos.
Following her stunning win over world number two Simona Halep in her first Grand Slam appearance after her return from a doping ban, Sharapova was also made to work hard to overcome Babos in Wednesday’s second round encounter at Flushing Meadows.
The Russian eventually prevailed 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1, recovering from losing the first set by battling hard in the second before hitting her stride and easing through the third set.
“I knew I wanted to get it done and I did,” Sharapova said after the victory over the world number 59.
“I felt like it was a scrappy match but sometimes those days are the best, because you get through and give yourself another chance.
“In the second set I felt like I was physically fresh,” Sharapova added.
“That gave me a lot of confidence. I just wanted to be the fittest player out there in the end, and I was.”
Sharapova, currently ranked world number 146, came back from a 15-month doping ban in April, but is getting her first taste of Grand Slam tennis at the US Open since her return, having missed Wimbledon through injury and been denied a wildcard to the French Open.
The Russian, 30, was given a wildcard for the main draw in New York, and has generally received a warm welcome from fans – which she remarked on after Wednesday’s win.
“I’ve had an amazing reaction from fans since I’ve been back, and that’s been very special,” said Sharapova, who won the US Open title in 2006 – one of her five Grand Slam triumphs.
She now faces 18-year-old wildcard Sofia Kenin in the third round, after the American beat compatriot Sachia Vickery in three sets in their second round encounter.
Elsewhere in the women’s singles draw, Russia’s Elena Makarova shocked fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki in three sets to set up a third round clash against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.
Fellow Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova, Evgeniya Rodina, Elena Vesnina and Daria Kasatkina will all be bidding to make the women’s singles third round when they play later on Thursday.

Sharapova, ranked 146 in the world after coming back from a 15-month doping ban in April this year, faced a tough challenge in the form of Romanian number two seed Halep at Flushing Meadows.
The Russian, however, managed her emotions well on her return to Grand Slam tennis, recording a dramatic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 45 minutes.
“How can I sleep after this!” Sharapova, 30, tweeted after the match, captioning a picture of herself celebrating the victory.
She talked at greater length about her feelings in the post-match interview on the court.
“I just thought this was another day, another opportunity, another match,” Sharapova said, battling her emotions.
“But this was so much more. You can’t control your emotions. Everything you go through is worth it just for this moment.
“You sometimes wonder why you put in all the work and this is exactly why,” she added.
The Russian five-time Grand Slam winner shocked the sports world at a quickly organized press-conference in Los Angeles at the beginning of March 2016, when she announced that she had failed a drug test.
The drug in question was Meldonium, a substance which in Sharapova’s words she had been taking for around 10 years on the advice of a family doctor, and which had been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) banned list just two months before the news, starting January 2016.
She was initially banned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for two years, which was reduced to 15 months on appeal.
Sharapova was granted a wildcard to the main draw at the US Open, having missed Wimbledon due to injury and being denied entry to the French Open.
She now faces another tough task to work her way up the rankings, but the Monday victory showed that she is in strong shape and is mentally ready for further challenges at the US Open.
“This girl has a lot of grit,” Sharapova said of herself in the same interview. “And she’s not going anywhere.”
The Russian, who won the US Open title in 2006, now faces Hungary’s Timea Babos in the second round on Wednesday.

The first-round blockbuster certainly lived up to the hype under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Sharapova ultimately overpowering Halep to win 6-4 4-6 6-3.
The 2006 champion had looked set to win in straight sets when she led 4-1 in the second only to let it slip but recovered to clinch a dramatic victory after two hours and 44 minutes.
Sharapova dropped to her knees after clinching victory and then sat and sobbed on her chair, her face a picture of disbelief.
“I thought this was another day, another match, but this was so much more, you never know what you will feel until you win match point,” Sharapova said.
“You sometimes wonder why you put in all the work and this is why.
“We respect each other so much, the hype was because of the quality of the matches we have played before.
“These are the opportunities you play for. Behind all these Swarovski crystal and dresses, this girl has a lot of grit and she is not going anywhere.”
If there were dissenters among the crowd, they kept their thoughts to themselves as Sharapova strode onto court in a black sequined dress with cheers ringing in her ears.
She had beaten Halep in all six of their previous meetings but this time came in as the firm underdog having played just four tournaments since the end of her 15-month doping ban in April.
Injuries have been her nemesis and she had managed only one match in more than three months.
But from the start it was clear Sharapova was fit and in the mood to write headlines on the court at last.
